In recent months my Nexus 6p is really lagging a lot I usually have to restart the phone a lot, I thought maybe it's chrome but not sure keyboard been lagging quite a bit at times too. Anybody find a fix for this problem? When I first got the phone it was very smooth now it's been pretty bad.
Mine is doing exactly the same. I'm using pure nexus. In games particularly.
It's Thermal Throttling and not much you could do about without ripping the device apart and replacing the thermal paste. This is not something everybody would want to do since opening this device is a pure nightmare.
If you´ve already performed a full wipe before and flashed a Stock Factory Image and still have this issue, it might be indeed a case for Google to replace the device.
Yup, have this issue too.
Anybody had any success fixing this problem?
The only solution I can think of is to get a new CPU. Which is impossible of course.
You are most likely experiencing CPU/GPU throttling. It plagues the Snapdragon 810. I know the Snapdragon 810 in the 6P is a revised version, but overheating still exists.
I've fixed my device myself. Sooner or later it will throttle too but it takes a longer time for the device to heat up that bad.
Yup, sometimes it is veery laggy, more laggy than snapdragon 800 phones..

How did you fix it?
I literally opened the device and replaced the cheap and rubbery thermal paste. I've linked the thread in my signature. You can also spot it in the general section

What thermal paste you used?
I used a premium thermal paste with a thermal conductivity of 16W/mK and a 17W/mK thermal pad. You can use paste only instead of a thermal pad too but it will look a little messier on the inside.
Yeah, it's the 810 overheating. The S7 in comparison is super-smooth and fast. At least Qualcomm have sorted their flagship processor out.
I've never experienced any lag in the 3 months I've owned this device. I've been using pure nexus along with lean kernel and elementalx. I have found stock kernel runs smoother. If you go back to factory images and still experience lag, warrenty return the device.

No lag ever but I recently had weird thing happen where my phone would give the red message upon boot as if I wasn't using matching vendor image and I would flash it and it wouldn't quit displaying the red message on boot so I wiped everything using fastboot and manually flashed mmb29q factory image and used it for 3-4 days then installed Tesla and all is good now. Probably from flashing MaNy many times in the last few months. I suggest wiping your phone using fastboot and starting over if you experience anything weird. Worked for me but I've never had any lag. I have however had lag on other phones in my past and I no longer used whatever rom I was as that seemed to be the culprit. No lag here. ?

Hi Guys,
Just recently got my shiny new S4 in arctic blue great, I know a bit about rooting and installing custom roms as I've done it to a fair few phones in the past but with my S3 I know there were a few issues with the bug and the older phones dying also with the samsungs there is the flash counter and modified issue so here's my question/s.
Currently what is the easiest method of rooting and installing philz recovery, I'm looking at installing the omega or foxhound rom/s.
Once done will this increase my flash counter and also place my phone in modified?, if so can I set this back after doing the above, so if I do have a problem its just basically installing a stock rom again.
Thanks guys
BTW I did first purchase the black mist and noticed that it had a heating problem I even sent it back to samsung but they said that it was fine, then sold and bought the blue version this is exactly the same if not worse and on antutu stability test the phone went upto almost 40 degrees, is this normal?.

Do you have the I9500? That has an issue with overheating. However 40 degrees is not an unreasonable for a processor / GPU being pushed hard. It may seem hot, and it's not great for the battery but it is not out of any reasonable bounds. Mine is I9505 and playing vice city etc. it gets damn warm!
Flash counter can be countered with Triangle Away.
Easiest: just search.
Actually all of your questions are answered several times on here, use the search function!

Hi,
I have the UK i9505 version, had it in black mist thought there was an overheating problem, also had battery drain and it seemed laggy, so I sent off to Samsung, they basically said it was fine and the S4 gets warm from time to time which is normal. I ended up selling it and buying an Arctic Blue i9505 but it basically is the same. I cant believe a flagship phone with a 2gb ram and quadcore is laggy at times and I would honestly say slower than some dualcore phones i've had.
I love the S4's screen the camera is good quality but again takes an age to open and shoot, hence I'm hoping that a custom rom may fix a lot of these problems?.
I've had S3 & S4, HTC one and Iphone 5, all have their good and bad points shame there isnt a phone out there with, S4's camera quality (iphones speed), Iphone's speed and fluidity UI, HTC's speakers and style (superb) and S4's screen with iphones brightness, and S4's removable back with SD slot.
Someone please bring out .
With triangle away, if I root and install a recovery does this increase the flash counter and change the phone to modified?.
I will use search I always do just find asking the question easier, things like one click rooting and recovery are sometimes hard to find and you end up rooting manually and installing recovery etc when there are newer and easier tools out.
Thanks

The FAQ at the top has root instructions, probably the easiest way to do it. The i9505 shouldn't overheat, but defects do happen.
What exactly is slow, I've found this blazingly fast compared to my nexus 4 and comparable to HTC one? iOS is optimised and always looks and feels smoother to me.
A few things I found speeded things up:
1) Turn off the unlock animation. That is just laggy.
2) Enable developer options and change all windows animations to 0.5. Feels snappier to me.
3) Do not use task killers at all.
4) Factory reset after update
5) Turn off smart stay etc if not in use, same for multi window.
Triangle away should set you back on the counter and there is a post on how to unroot and return to 'original' status. I just don't have the link to hand (in work and BUSY!)
Best of luck!
Thanks Ross,
Well i've had 2 now both from phones4u new and its definitely hot at times both got warm with things like using camera and youtube, running videos etc. Surely I cant be unlucky enough to have had 2 defective units?.
I've also had the nexus 4 and that was fluid compared to this, i've tried using nova launcher but still not smooth, I don't use any samsung gimmicks and have heard about the animation will try that now, my wifes GS3 is smoother in my opinion.
I really didnt want to root and custom flash tbh just because if it is faulty and was to die on me and don't want to have the problem with possibly not being able to reset counter, hence the reason for asking peps out there to make double sure that its pretty easy to do. Samsung were absolutely crap when I contacted them about my first black mist S4, I used it on GPS satnav for 3 hours to get to airport for hols I had it charging in car also at the end it was boiling, as such the metal surround slightly moved and the phone had gaps on the side Samsung said this was fine and the heating was fine!!, the phone was only 5 weeks old, and it even had intermittent restarting problems and battery drain which I mentioned I couldnt believe their CS.

I think it may be 'technically' ok, but if you are getting a poor user experience you are completely right to return it. I do find it very warm but not overly so compared to other devices.
Where are you getting the slowdown / lag on the device? It's possible I'm just accustomed to it, but after the last update I found things a lot better. (I'm in Ireland so I'd say were using the same device, mine's black too!) There's a difference between lag/choppy frame rate/ slow down and it's not clear where your issue is. I've seen a lot of mention of lag but compared to my other devices I find this pretty nippy. Perception of it is what it comes down to. Some iPhones are slower but appear far faster due to smooth animations etc. The 0.5x did help me and it 'feels' faster loading apps etc. I do agree the HTC One feels smoother and more fluid, that seems to be down to Sense 5 more than anything, rather than actual loading times in milliseconds as it were.
I found nove VERY slow upon boot up but it 'settled' after a few minutes running.
I basically found tw to be jerky especially when you first put the screen on, things like widgets take a bit to load app drawer sometimes also lags a bit. Also internet browsing and scrolling is def jerky.
Ive got the arctic blue version now and love the look and feel of the phone. Just ran antutu benchmark again and its weird I keep getting different benchmark scores last one was 21500 prior to that almost 26000 why? My other s4 was the same inconsistent benchmarks. Also stability test showed heat started at 30 degrees and again just kept on rising to almost 40, plus worryingly it dipped from 140 to 70 in stability a few times.
Could you do me a massive favour and run antutu on your s4 and let me know what results you get out of curiosity. Im running latest stock firmware.
Thanks

2425 but it varies. The benchmarks are not reliable at all. And there's the whole Samsung benchmark debacle, it gets very hot as there's no thermal limiting. 48 Celsius!!
That doesn't sound right at all with the lag and widgets. Sounds like task manager is killing everything out something is pulling resources.
Factory reset? Are you running a rom or stock? Rooted?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
Many thanks for doing that ross, 48 degrees! mine is cool then at 40, im running latest stock, I have factory reset although the animation at 0.5 has made it a bit smoother, thanks for the tip.
I havent installed any task killer or anything like that and just a few apps that dont run in background.
Hence was really hoping a custom rom would help with heating and speed, weird thing is with my black one it ran more smoothly in power saving mode almost like when on full power the processor gets hot and throttles??.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
I'm a bit out of ideas. I'll have a think. Have a look at how you use it, in direct sunlight all day, in a case that traps heat etc. Weird to get two that are like that, but not unheard of.
Get a battery app or widget and screen shot every now and then as proof if you need to return it.
Sorry can't do more.

Thanks ross, np yes im going to test more ive still got few days left on 28 day return so will make my mind up then unsure how good phones 4u are on replacements though. With regards to the heat if your is 48 then they must all run hot on antutu?.
Thanks again ross

All variants of the S4 run hot ... the gt i9500 a bit more especially with the first firmware ... updates made things considerably better ...
I don't think that u have a defective phone ... it's just the way S4 works since u also return one and they said it's fine, chance is it was actually fine according to the S4 standards ... antutu runs at max freq so it's normal to get hot ... also battery drainage can occur from many different things ... the most common one is apps sync in the background especially when this is done with 3G/LTE ...
If u are a heavy user and u don't like the heat maybe u should consider another phone ... or buy a case ...
Hi
I dont mind it running hot as long as I know that everyones s4 is doing the same. If I know everyones is roughly reaching 40 degrees on antutu stability test then fine, but if others are say 32 degrees then thats a big difference and over time my phone would run the risk of damage.
I will post a thread asking for people to post screens and see.
Thanks fir the reply

Hi everyone, this is my first thread on XDA. Now that we have the pleasantries out of the way ... straight to the point. I just bought a Nexus 7 2nd edition/2013. Being the power user that I am (still haven't rooted it xD ) started trying out some emulators as a test, namely ppsspp and dolphin for android. Both of those are in development and highly unstable.
It's worth to mention that my first day of use was flawless. Here it comes ... BUT ... after messing around with dolphin I managed to well simply crash the OS. The tablet completely shut down, probably to prevent damage (e.g. bluescreen style). When I switched it back on everything seemed fine, until I played a video and I noticed that blacks/browns were pixelated (like artifacts). I installed the video game Magic 2014 and I'm unsure if I noticed it before or if it happened just now but during the intro I get the same issue with blacks - highly pixelated, and one of the images has 3 or 4 lines. In game performance is smooth and absolutely no issues.
The ppsspp and dolphin emulators both have options which push the CPU/GPU and memorry quite a lot. The tablet however hasn't been heating up at all.
What do you think ? Have I damaged my 3 day old nexus baby's GPU ? Or is it a software - driver issue ? Maybe something else
Help me oh great xda crowd

That was the first thing I did sadly same artifacts in Magic 2014. I'm considering sending it back for a replacement.
Looks like the Nexus 9 far surpasses all other tablets in performance.
http://www.androidbenchmark.net/passmark_chart.html
Amazing how much of a difference there is. While the Nexus currently scores an average of 8152, the Samsung Galaxy S line of tablets score around 5500. The Nexus 10 and Nexus 6 both score around 4000. The original Kindle Fire, which was my last device, scores just 1400.
EDIT: The Nexus 9 is also the fastest device on Antutu.
Yet constant reboots and freezing apps like chrome and gmail make it frustrating to use.

This tablet has been factory reset probably 20 times between trying all the kernels and a few of my own, resetting is just a temporary fix. Factory resetting isn't doing anything special. Its just clearing cache and ram giving a temp fix. When the tablet heats back up starts throttling and ram starts filling up, the same issues come back every time. Trust me, I wish it was that easy. I really want to like this thing.
I have no idea what people do on/with their tablets to cause these so called issues but I don't get any of those problems with mine. Perhaps if people stopped effing around with them then they would work as expected. Just saying........

3 tablets 3 times? Doubt it. I don't think this should be news to people. I will say this though- being slow at opening some apps happens all the time. My nexus 5 is always faster than the 9.
The lag OTOH, only gets really bad proportional to heat. While browsing earlier the CPU got to over 140°(F) in a relatively short period, and that is when it turns in to a lagging turtle of a tablet. I have not looked at any of the thermal cut offs in source, but it didn't seem to be going past 1500 MHz.
Add to this not much free ram, which happens all the time on this tablet, it becomes a nightmare.
But, I either get pissed and return , or I get pissed and want to help. So I cloned the source get it compiling now I have a few things I wanna try. One seems to be at forefront as soon as I have so me patches in my treeq may I'll give it a whirl.
Gotta get back accustomed to git its been a while.

No. The bootloop "fix" is a workaround that permanently hobbles your device, allowing you to make backups and remove any photos/data you need from the phone so you can transfer to your next phone. Since your phone has a hardware defect directly related to the motherboard, there is no software update that will help. Take everything you need off the phone asap and start looking for your next phone.

Um...no? I mean, it's not that it hobbles your phone. And it's not that it's just a workaround to make backups. In fact it runs almost the same. Turns out, after some digging in, @XCnathan32 found out that even a normal 6p was throtling it's 4 BIG cores from 2ghz to 800mhz, because of which the phone was heating up and marginally running better as compared to the current fix. Now it doesn't heat up and runs slightly lower (not even noticable) than what it used to.
My phone, for one, works almost identical. No dip in performance for my usual activities - no games. Occasionally I run Drastic DS for some emulated NDS games. Never had a bootloop since.
As for the original question: the bootlooping will still occur. It seems to be a hardware issue as far as what I've followed in XCnathan32's posts.
The same link that OP has, will take him to the fix with the flashable Oreo kernels as well.

BLOD is a hardware defect plain and simple. No software upgrade (or workaround) will ever change this but not all devices are affected. I think the chances of you finding a NEW 6P are pretty slim... but still possible. We have two 6P's that are approaching 2 years old and no sign of battery degradation or any other issues. I wouldn't touch a refurb at this stage. Probably the best bang for the buck would be a Pixel XL, now the new ones are in the pipeline, prices should be dropping significantly.

If your device is stock there is no concern and yes, you should take the update . If you had the bootloop issue and needed to apply the workaround to your device to get it working, then you will have to wait because the update would overwrite the fix.

Title says it all. Got brand a new device last month (build date 11/1/2017), which started to decrease in overall performance after some weeks, meaning snappiness is gone, ui experience doesnt feel as smooth as it used to.
Nothing helps, already full wiped. Clean flashed android 9.0. Apps arent the source, since it's right there after a full wipe with just the standard apps.
Only factor seems to be "time". Since I am not the only one with that problem (see marques here://youtu.be/5_5zZnuB71w), I wonder who can relate and found the culprit.
Thanks!
I will not say I did not notice performance issues. But clearing of apps definitely did help. Also with the latest Android pie update it is back to its original smooth performance.

already did that, before full wiping. since the latter didnt help, it didnt help either.
I can't say I've ever experienced lag on my pixel 2 xl. It's been going so strong since a few months ago when I got it. With pie it feels like it just got smoother and looks like it's actually holding animations at 60fps no frame drops it's very nice
I can count on one hand the number of times I've observed noticeable lag/jankiness on my P2XL, and it almost always happens when I try to do too much after rebooting, before the system has settled. On prior Android devices, I would routinely clear the background apps, but my P2XL doesn't seem to require that. It runs just fine without me micromanaging it. I *do* use SD Maid (in Google Play) about once a week, so that probably helps. I also use Nova Launcher because I can't get used to the stock launcher. And I reduce all animations to 0.5x (Settings > Dev options).
Mine is definitely not sluggish at all. Snappy as ever, and nicer now with Pie.
yea first pixel 2 xl i got (this one is a replacement) seemed to get a little less snappier from time to time, but always got back on track. so i know the real fluid and lagfree pixel experience.
but as this case (and the yt video) shows, it can go another route, too. question is, is it just a hardware thing?

Highly doubt it's a "hardware thing" Snapdragon 835 is s great SoC, your lag could be due to a few things, number of apps installed, modifications to the system (ie magisk, Xposed, kernel, etc) rogue apps. I've had no issues with slowdowns or lag, no sure if you're stock or not but I run AquriOS with Flash kernel and magisk root, and everything runs flawlessly.

Re reading your original post, it's either a hardware malfunction or you are getting used to the"snappiness" of the device and you are feeling it's not fast enough. TBH my device runs as nicely as it did they say I got it.

could it be a hardware malfunction if the benchmarks all perform as expected?
i sure didn't get used to it, since i had my original pixel 2 xl (this one is a replacement) for more like half a year without feeling less snappiness
Fast just like a day one. Ive judt realized even MKBHD the best tech youtuber cant be trusted anymore. Hes the camera guy. He keeps mentioning he cant go anywhere else because the pixel 2 xl camera is too good and i agreed but recently he jumped to oneplus 6 and it was a lie that it is his daily driver. There is no reasom to
The performance is not hat much different. Check xda analysis. Numbers cant lie. Pixel somehow is smoother. I own S9, OP6, and 2XL and i knew what is what. Stop watching too much youtube videos. They all are hired by oneplus

you mean i watched a yt video and then got the idea that my phone is slow? oh boi..
There's plenty of people complaining on the same issue in the comments. Makes me concerned. So far i didn't experience any sluggishness on my device. Today i feel very happy about my choice for phone, because i got an opportunity to spend minutes with Note 9 and oh boy, do i not miss Samsung... That's like getting back to Nexus 6... Crazy.
Official Pie has been running smoother than DP2 through DP5 for me. No complaints here. Still wish RAM management was better but that's been on the aggressive side since day 1.

MKBHD is not lying when he said the oneplus 6 is smoother. Anandtech which is a reputable source confirms that the OnePlus 6 is smoother and faster than any phone on the market. The 2nd fastest phone is not the pixel, it's the xiaomi mi mix 2s.
The issue I have is my phone works prefect and then will just stutter...like lag and almost freeze up for a moment. Resetting doesn't fix.
Been having issues as well last month. Started fresh and wiped with pie and still lags. Not sure what's happening. Cannot figure it out. No rogue apps. Haven't installed a new app in weeks.
The phone just hangs more often now. Never had this issue since I got the phone around December.
