Hey guys!
Title says it all. Got brand a new device last month (build date 11/1/2017), which started to decrease in overall performance after some weeks, meaning snappiness is gone, ui experience doesnt feel as smooth as it used to.
Nothing helps, already full wiped. Clean flashed android 9.0. Apps arent the source, since it's right there after a full wipe with just the standard apps.
Only factor seems to be "time". Since I am not the only one with that problem (see marques here://youtu.be/5_5zZnuB71w), I wonder who can relate and found the culprit.
Thanks!
I will not say I did not notice performance issues. But clearing of apps definitely did help. Also with the latest Android pie update it is back to its original smooth performance.

already did that, before full wiping. since the latter didnt help, it didnt help either.
I can't say I've ever experienced lag on my pixel 2 xl. It's been going so strong since a few months ago when I got it. With pie it feels like it just got smoother and looks like it's actually holding animations at 60fps no frame drops it's very nice
I can count on one hand the number of times I've observed noticeable lag/jankiness on my P2XL, and it almost always happens when I try to do too much after rebooting, before the system has settled. On prior Android devices, I would routinely clear the background apps, but my P2XL doesn't seem to require that. It runs just fine without me micromanaging it. I *do* use SD Maid (in Google Play) about once a week, so that probably helps. I also use Nova Launcher because I can't get used to the stock launcher. And I reduce all animations to 0.5x (Settings > Dev options).
Mine is definitely not sluggish at all. Snappy as ever, and nicer now with Pie.
yea first pixel 2 xl i got (this one is a replacement) seemed to get a little less snappier from time to time, but always got back on track. so i know the real fluid and lagfree pixel experience.
but as this case (and the yt video) shows, it can go another route, too. question is, is it just a hardware thing?

Highly doubt it's a "hardware thing" Snapdragon 835 is s great SoC, your lag could be due to a few things, number of apps installed, modifications to the system (ie magisk, Xposed, kernel, etc) rogue apps. I've had no issues with slowdowns or lag, no sure if you're stock or not but I run AquriOS with Flash kernel and magisk root, and everything runs flawlessly.

Re reading your original post, it's either a hardware malfunction or you are getting used to the"snappiness" of the device and you are feeling it's not fast enough. TBH my device runs as nicely as it did they say I got it.

could it be a hardware malfunction if the benchmarks all perform as expected?
i sure didn't get used to it, since i had my original pixel 2 xl (this one is a replacement) for more like half a year without feeling less snappiness

you mean i watched a yt video and then got the idea that my phone is slow? oh boi..
There's plenty of people complaining on the same issue in the comments. Makes me concerned. So far i didn't experience any sluggishness on my device. Today i feel very happy about my choice for phone, because i got an opportunity to spend minutes with Note 9 and oh boy, do i not miss Samsung... That's like getting back to Nexus 6... Crazy.
Official Pie has been running smoother than DP2 through DP5 for me. No complaints here. Still wish RAM management was better but that's been on the aggressive side since day 1.

MKBHD is not lying when he said the oneplus 6 is smoother. Anandtech which is a reputable source confirms that the OnePlus 6 is smoother and faster than any phone on the market. The 2nd fastest phone is not the pixel, it's the xiaomi mi mix 2s.
The issue I have is my phone works prefect and then will just stutter...like lag and almost freeze up for a moment. Resetting doesn't fix.
Been having issues as well last month. Started fresh and wiped with pie and still lags. Not sure what's happening. Cannot figure it out. No rogue apps. Haven't installed a new app in weeks.
The phone just hangs more often now. Never had this issue since I got the phone around December.

So I bought my G4 from T-mobile yesterday as I did the initial install it feels choppy and laggy. After all the google play updates and restart the phone was still laggy when I move from app to app, home screen to setting and back. What I found out that help was changing the layout in Setting from Tab View to List View as you navigate around the phone like what I did previously everything became smooth and no longer laggy. Havent run into any issue with battery drain, wifi, touch screen, heat as most users describe yet will update if I find alternative solution.
After a fresh start (after factory reset, ROM flash, OS upgrade), the system does lots of indexing and set up, leading to a laggy phone and high battery drain. Give it a couple of days to settle down.
Yeah mine was same first startup is slow feels so laggy. But now feels great and battery life is also improved. I disabled most of google apps only have gmail.

Ahhh indexing that sounds quite about right for a moment I thought because UI itself throttle down the cpu of the phone so it seems laggy. Thanks for info hope it gets better in a couple of days as for apps that are not needed which bloatware apps do u guys disable so it doesnt run in the background and such?
Mine almost seems as if the phone doesn't have the resources to handle high usage. I'm waiting patiently for root so we can slim it down and better utilize cpu scaling (on demand, performance, etc)

The G4s (And I guess along with other phones) do have a sizable amount of bloatware installed as well. Just looking at the apps pre-installed from out of the box, there's quite a bit for a brand new phone.
Even though my G4 is broken in now, I found that after I disabled a buttload of these apps, it felt a bit snappier.
And I guess as a recommendation since you just got the phone. Replace the text messaging app ASAP! Stock is garbage, after I imported about 10'000 messages from my old phone, it slowed down as if I had it for a while. After replacing it with Textra. It's smooth as butter. Best decision I've ever made, and I generally hate leaving stock app for another one because I prefer less clutter.
Another one is to replace the stock keyboard with something like SwiftKey. This is a no brainer after using the stock keyboard for a while.
Some choose to replace Chrome as well with Firefox, or nochromo.
Just my top 3 recommendations for our G4s. After doing these 3, everything felt a lot better.

Yeah took your advice and replace with google stock messenger, swiftkey, and have not try out the nochromo yet
My G4 works just amazing and it is very smooth and snappy. My version is H815L.
Exactly one must wait about two days so it all settled down. A factory reset helps if your phone didn't come with the newest update 5.1 or what not. But yeah
Mine didn't come with too much bloat if at all so I never had any lag issues, but using Textra and SwiftKey helped a with speeding it up. The stock messaging app wasn't cutting it

It is getting smoother and snappier but still see that animation lag when you're at home screen and press app drawer..do that multiple time and you will see the jitter. BTW I also disable alot of unnecessary app dont know if this come into play and also an option in Battery Setting where it say to reduce game graphic I turn that off:good:. Hopefully it is running at higher cpu/graphic frequency. Question does anyone know what OEM UNLOCK is in Developer menu?
I can play godfire without any issues
Oh look, it's you!!
Hey all,
I bought a One Plus 2 yesterday (coming from the Galaxy S6) and immediately noticed how unbearably laggy the Oxygen OS was - am I the only one experiencing this? I get a few moments of fluid animations but then things just get choppy, especially compared to the Galaxy S6. I've since put the Chinese Hydrogen version on and it seems a lot more fluid but I just feel like it should be a lot faster? I've been considering just selling it on but this phone is perfect in nearly every other regard.
I was thinking that maybe this is just how things will be until some decent updates come along? Unless I'm the only person experiencing the choppiness.. Then I suppose I should be pretty worried indeed. As a point of reference, I've also used the Moto X 2014 and Z3 Compact which both seemed considerably smoother in operation. Some input from you guys would be great, along with any tips you might have to get the most out of this amazing phone.
Thanks.
Lol coming from an s6 you think its laggy? I switched from an s6 and compared to that this is the fastest phone I've ever had
Sent from my ONE A2001 using Tapatalk
Yes it is laggy as oxygen is still on beta, but you should wait and give time as it is a beast, give some time to one plus and they will fix the issues
You did update it right? The build it comes with is as dog**** as the home button is
Just update to 2.0.2 and u'll be fine.

Yup.. It usually lags when you switch to airplane mode.

Phone is brand new. OxygenOS is in beta.. Let some development happen man, these specs dont lie
I updated and just got mine! Excited but it is slow. Some things up
Seems fast to me. I showed the OPT to my coworker who has an S6 Edge and he was impressed. He said it was faster than his S6. I didn't even ask him that.
Lol you obviously didn't use the fingerprint sensor to turn it on then or try to go to the home screen pressing the sensor home button. Jk
I've had several phones with fingerprint scanners and this one is by far the fastest so far and the phone is quick. Home button works great also. Maybe I just got lucky.
Yeah mine's pretty slow. I went into a phone store today and tried out the Huawei Mate 7, which on paper looks way behind the Oneplus 2, and it KILLED my OPT when opening apps.
I often get lag here and there, but this is less of a problem for me. My mane gripe is how long it takes to open an app. Like, I hit the Phone icon and it literally takes up to a second to launch. That Mate 7 was practically instant.
What gives, Oneplus?
A lot of the issues I initially had with oxygen were fixed after disabling hardware buttons, including excessive battery drain, heating up, and lag similar to what you're seeing. Maybe it has something to do with grounding? Or maybe I just got used to it :S
This phone is just not meant to be a daily driver with the frustration it brings. If you want to be less mad install cm 12.1. Makes things much better than oxygen
Try flashing OxygenOS 2.0.2 again and then factory reset. You may see a bump in speed. I personally have no quirks with the fluidity of the phone. While it does have some bugs all over the place, never once did the phone feel sluggish. But with that said, the OS does need a lot more polish to really make it feel truly complete. Right now despite all the OTAs OxygenOS still feels incomplete, or maybe its because I'm too used to the versatility of a CM based ROM.
It's slow for about a minute after boot but then things are really fast

Actually, the problem is because 2 google apps are using your CPU way too much. Disable the sheets and the slides apps in settings and you should be fine. CPU usage dropped by 40% in cpu-z after disabling these apps.
Update:- actually the CPU now has really less usage after disabling (5% after disabling.).

You see, I saw some lag and I went to developer options>show CPU usage and the most of the CPU usage came from the sheets and slides apps.
I see others are having issues with the phone being sluggish and freezing - requiring a forced restart. I've had these issues since day one, but the phone is just so damn beautiful to stop using.
I've tried everything I have seen on this site including factory resets and manually adding apps back in (in lieu of restoring from Google). Still happens.
I've been emailing back and forth with Essential customer service, and while they're responsive, I'm getting frustrated.
They asked me to use it in Safe Mode for a couple days, and I had no issues. So they concluded it's an app causing the problem. So they want me to do another factory reset, and then add apps back one at a time for a few days to see if I can pinpoint which app(s) are causing the issue. I have 100+ apps on the phone - this will take months to do!
My comment to them (that they didn't appreciate) is that if they want to compete with the flagship phones of other OEM's the phone should be able to handle any app you you throw at is, and I have no issues with my ZTE Axon 7 running the exact same apps.
Am I off base here? Any other suggestions?

You are off base.
There are apps that can cause issues and no manufacturer can guarantee the performance of their device with any and all apps in the PlayStore.
There are apps that have memory leaks, wake events, etc. and there is no way for them to contain any/all errant apps, nor should they.
I suggest Greenify to look at app behavior and see what isn't sleeping and taking resources.
You can also look at the battery stats and see what app is burning battery.
Social media apps are typically bad.
Things like Pet Rescue and Candy Crush can also cause issues.
Make sure you limit which apps can do notifications and limit those to SMS and email apps.
Good luck.
I would highly recommend testing the Oreo 8.1 beta. HUGE performance improvement
I've been running N 7.1.1 since I got the phone 2 weeks ago and the performance has been stellar, scrolling is smooth and fast, no freezes at all, after reading the issues with 8.1 beta (battery drain, wifi etc.) I'm in no rush to upgrade....
I am on 7.1.1, came here after searching google seeing if they'll ever do this android Oreo Update. I have some phantom touches on my touchscreen. Thank god this phone was cheap. That S9 keeps looking better and better.

The touchscreen issue is related to hardware from what I can see and have read. Performance issues for me are related to memory management and the fact that I use a lot of memory hogging applications. Don't get me wrong just because your experience has been stellar the. I think it's a cool phone. Just not good enough for me to continue using it for another year. The Samsung...I specifically said the S9 because of extra ram and its top of the line screen. Which you can deny if you want but it's true. Best in class screen. They even make the iPhones screen. This phone was cheap so it was worth it for me because I enjoy tech regardless of the flaws. Just need that official oreo update!

look I had the S8 and it was stellar, but was looking for some cash so sold my S8 for $620 and bought the PH-1 for $450, and I'm really impressed so far, ok sure I dont to rocket science etc on the phone so I'm a pretty light user, but on 7.1.1 its been superb since day 1, smooth, snappy and better battery than the S8.
Agreed with all above. Apps are the issue for any phone. I have a zoo of different makes & models. to compare. Social bs apps are the worst. Even google's own are bad enough. Just do a quick search on ""worst apps for draining battery" and start cleaning your phone.
PH-1 Oreo 8.1 power drain is almost nothing comparing to the rest of the 'stable' world. If you don't like to experiment, stay on stable 7.1 until 8.1 is released.

Started using Greenify, but to work as intended, it requires you to set it as a Device Admin. When doing this, it disables the fingerprint sensor.

I'd say that RAM is not an issue here. The software causes phone performance to degrade. 8.1 works fine for me. Hardware itself in PH-1 is awesome. And price tag beats OnePlus and many others. ??
So far, the Oreo OTA update has been great. No issues like I had on Nougat. Hope this remains.
So when i seen the thumbnail and title i had to watch it and jeez at least from my point of view dude was right! I was running completely stock no Root no kernel just stock at the time and i didn't realize my phone had slowed down at a noticeable rate from when i first bought the phone Back in December until i watched that video! Obviously the simple solution was to scale down animations right? So i did that and bam phone was running at full speed again BUT my issue was that for a phone this expensive, timely updates and patches, made by Google, and a stock Android experience one shouldn't have to go through anything like that to keep their phone running at full speed right? But anyway after watching that i decided to give the final beta a try and oh man I fell deeply in love with it especially the gestures. I do think the recent cards seriously need to be optimized much better because trying to swipe through them to get back to a specific app a few pages back can be really annoying. Then i got the notification for the official pie release so of course i upgraded. The battery life, speed, and fluidity is what stood out to me the most! It was perfect! Now I've been using only one custom kernel while on Oreo and that's Flash's so i decided to give that a try on Android pie and the speed and battery life still improved! From the day i got this phone I've never experienced this type of speed and battery life before. It's just freaking amazing and made me fall in love with my pixel again lol. Shout out to flash and the squad!
Any thoughts on your experiences?
I haven't run into any of the lag issues, but that's probably because I run a custom ROM/kernel. I did watch some videos of the lag and that would drive me insane!
Read an article yesterday that a few P2XL's out there are experiencing this and google is replacing the phones. Apparently it's related to a hardware issue.

I saw that too. From what I gleaned, the lag must make the phone practically unusable in order to qualify for a replacement.

Just got my OP6T yesterday and I'm getting lots of lag. Mostly scrolling lag when I'm scrolling slow through the app drawer, play store, etc. (fast scrolling is always smooth) I've also experienced lag in general while using the launcher and just doing normal functions. This is my first OnePlus device and I've always heard they are super smooth with no lag and so far this has not been the case for me.
Is my device defective? Is there some known issue I can fix? I don't want to have to return it but I don't want a laggy phone either.
(UPDATE) The cause for the lag seems to be gesture navigation and also immersive mode via a third party app (immersive mode is not a feature within the device but can be accessed by apps even without root). I've been using gesture navigation since I bought the phone and have had scrolling lag the whole time. I switched to the traditional 3 button nav last night and the lag was gone. Another user reported they are having terrible lag issues while using immersive mode but once they disable it the lag is completely gone.
Did you install any apps yet? Note most 3rd party apps are not fully well versed on Android 9.
Try updating to 9.0.5 and see if the problem persist. When I received the phone, I turned animation scale off. You can try that and see if you still notice lag.
You may have a defective one. Mine is extremely smooth. Dare I say it might be the smoothest Android experience I've ever had.

Yes, I've installed my normal apps which is only like 30. I'm not a big app user so don't have tons and all those I use have worked good on pie for some time. I also have a Pixel 2XL and have been on Pie since the second beta last spring.

I updated to 9.0.5 as soon as I got the phone yesterday. I don't want to turn off animations because they are pretty ;'(
Not the lag.. but I definitely see drop frames and jankiness coming from smooth pixel 2 xl

I also have a Pixel 2XL and didn't notice the lags I'm getting on the OP6T. I'm currently troubleshooting to see if I can find a solution.
I have not experienced one time lag as I can remember last days. I updated to latest firmware straight away
I'm on 9.0.4 - not done anything at all with it, and it's as fast as anything. If it's like that out of the box then it sounds like you've got a defective device.
I'm also getting stuttery scrolling on most apps. Came from Pixel 2xl and it was smoother than this. Should I be concerned I have a faulty device? My first one plus phone as well. It's not bad enough to bail on device but is definitely noticable and annoying.
Omg what's goin on in here, i came straight from pixel 2 xl and 6t feeeeels far more smooth than pixel, its blazing fast,
Who is your carrier? Maybe it's something specific to them?

Don't get me wrong. This thing is way faster than the p2xl. Its just when I'm scrolling slowly reading on different apps, it misses here and there. Stuttery scrolling. It seems a little better after the update. I was scrolling on Zedge and it was like it was 10 fps..

I installed ElementalX kernel and so far it seems to have fixed the stutter while scrolling. I'm paying close attention and if it keeps up I'll be returning it for another device. The only reason I'm stressing it so much is one of the main reasons I bought it is because for years the OnePlus devices have been praised for being super smooth, fast, with no UI lag. Lag, frame drops, stutter, and UI faults of any sort bother me greatly. My Pixel2XL has had a bit of lag here and there but overall it's been smooth and pleasant to use so I can't handle anything less.

This is exactly the issue I've experienced. It's only during slow scrolling. I've also had lag in other areas like opening folders and closing apps but it's mostly been while scrolling -- but like I said so far the ElementalX kernel seems to have fixed it.

Just flashed elemental kernal. Will test for a bit and post back.
Did you change any of the settings or all defaults?

I changed all the cpu cores to their max frequency but left the governors default. That is it. Battery life seems the same.
I will say also that I noticed within EX Kernel Manager that the CPU cores were running very low frequencies by default which makes me wonder if for some reason my device had drastically underclocked cores. The max frequency I was seeing on any cores was 1.7GHz.

Yea, I think that's the problem since the cpu is designed to go to 2.8GHz on the main cores. For whatever reason mine were never going above 1.7. I'm hoping some custom ROMs and kernels will resolve this issue.
