Custom Kernel - Combination Battery/Wake Gestures - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking for new custom kernels. The perfect one for me would be one that combines great battery optimization (like maybe franco) and great wake gestures (like ElementalX). Do you know one that could provide this combination?
Thank you very much in advance for your input!

ElementalX does a great job on battery for me.

To my knowledge ElementalX is pretty much stock when it comes to that. In franco's thread people are claiming up to 30% better battery life with no performance drawbacks. So that would be what I'm looking for . Less charging - longer battery lifetime.

FK has dt2w, does ElementalX have something fancier? Now I gotta go see lol.
However, I disabled my dt2w because I prefer to unlock it with fingerprint and generally don't care about my lockscreen enough to do fancy gestures to wake it.

Yeah, you can choose which wake gestures you wanna activate, swipe up, down, left, right, dt2w. And a slide down gesture to activate the camera. The swipe gestures are much better than dt2w - they are more reliable and pretty much don't have any accidental wakes.

Which features do I lose with CM Rom?

I just bought a G2 and I really love it. I want to know which features i lose if I flash CM11? Can i have stock LG camera? Can i have IR features, like quickremote? Does the knock-on works as in the stock rom?
Which kernel do you suggest for a better battery life?

I've been on stock + xposed since day one and absolutely love it. But all the above you mentioned are lost if you flash CM, which is a big part of why I'd probably never flash an AOSP ROM on this phone. Now, I do believe there are zip files for quick remote and stock LG camera for AOSP. to restore those features. And Knock on/off depends on the kernel being used I believe. But the gain/loss of flashing AOSP over what stock+Xposed offers....just doesnt even begin to be worth it, for me at least.
Knock on works better on cm than stock but knock off doesent work its worth it to me but I love stock android and no bloatware just a matter of what you like

I am currently running omni.

Knock on works. Knock off status bar works and is in settings.
Paek 5.2 kernel is built in and is excellent. BT can cause a crash or freeze while turning on and off.
If you want knock off on the launcher use xblast or g2 setting exposed and nova launcher and you can set it as the double tap settings.
You can also have themes, navbar resize and changes dynamic status bar tiles, active display, immersive mode.
Battery lasts about 12 hours on hard use. Today was 3 hrs of BT and streaming music 15 phone calls. A couple ROM downloads and I was at 60% before I tried paek 5.3 kernel and burned down to 15% in an hour.
Easily a day and is comparable to stock.
Hope that helps

So you suggest Omni over CM?
I thought that with a custom kernel, battery life would be better than stock, maybe with a bit of unvervolt
I suggest Paranoid Android, Omni, Nameless and Mahdi. Those are the most stable.. At least to me.

Unfortunately though, you won't be able to use certain games with cm11. Touch doesn't seem to be working well.

Undervolt has been causing a lot of SOD's, so careful. I can't in good conscience tell you which ROM to use. I just switched over to gr33nd3vils cm for today. I'm trying to test out that PAEK 5.3 with no luck on battery life. OMNI has been pretty solid. Just bluetooth issues locking her down every now and then on my end.
So a good compromise is root+xposed+kernel. I'm just looking for a better battery life, so maybe a good kernel and greenify/titanium can help me

I'd go with that.
Kernels have been interesting with stock.
Dorimax Kernel and Furnace I think our our only stock kernels but seriously the stock kernel is pretty clean. Good battery life. I usually run it on interactive but that's just my preference with a 2048 buffer size and noop.
I just installed stock cause I'm going out of town for work this week.
Found the most debloated thing I could and threw down bsleds g2 xposed from the market, xblast from xposed, and google launcher so everything is nice and smooth.
A little bit of everything here.

Some help needed :/ Anyone ?

So I recently brought up a old nexus 4, the only problem in it is that it has some digitizer issues because of which the below 55px are dead that is the nav keys are dead.
.
So there are many alternatives for it like Pie controls but the one I liked The most is Mipop(you can google it up)
.
So the problem is that it is a MiUi Rom feature, is there any way I can use it up on other roms
Any help?
Also as I am new can someone suggest me some light roms and a Good Kernel for better BATTERY LIFE.
Your help would be appreciated.
Thanks
MiPop for Nexus 4. Just install the apk. Your welcome

As for your second question: it is common knowledge that a kernel, a rom, a theme doesnt affect your batterie life much. Of course if you overclock your CPU/GPU it will drain your batterie much more than stock frequencies. It is your usage bahavior, your apps running in the background, your widget that needs hourly updates, your signal strengths...
But I can recommend you matr1x kernel though. I have tested many, many kernels and I am most satisfied with this one. It has not too much features, but also you dont need them. Try it out
And maybe you should do a factory reset. Your problem may be solved then

I just tested this .apk and it is shewt. It isnt up to date anymore and probably doesnt work with the latest android version, so I dont recommend this. I am sorry, I should have tested it before posting it to you. My bad. Why dont you use something like PIE control? I know, you dont like it, but there isnt much alternative for you.
And what about this one? Try this out and report back.

How is M so far and what differentiates the M ROMS?

Hey there
I'm about to flash a 6.0/M Rom on my Nexus 4 but first I'd like to hear from you how it is so far when it comes to battery life etc?
From what I've read everything seems to work?
Also there are quite a few roms already and I don't know what do load: Frank, Minimal OS, "Fake Nexus Rom"(?), Oneofakind?
Would any AOSP based Lollipop Kernel work? Oh and is there a M Rom that supports to use the volume rocker to change music? I guess Xposed isn't working yet?
Thanks in advance!
In this moment i am using Cataclysm ROM with HellsCore. Cataclysm works fine and it is very fast but sometimes there are some lags and whith HellsCore i have very battery life!! In this rom there is volume rocker and a lot of features... Sorry but i didn't try other M rom!
Thanks so far
I think you missed a word there. You have very ..battery life?
I've used Frank, Unofficial Chroma, Pure AOSP (I think this one is already dead) and Cataclysm . They all are based on AOSP with some added features, at this moment the one with more options/features by far is Cataclysm, Chroma have the menu of features but they are not implemented, just like 8 of them or something like that. Performance is good in all of them, most of the time just like lollipop, and yes there is some lag here an there from time to time but is not the end of the world. Battery life is something else, i am amused, im getting like an extra hour of SO and almost flat lines when not using the phone, i also have Greenify 2.7.1 installed, but i had it on Lollipop and Battery was meh, so it has to be Android M new battery management and stuff. Really Good battery life. Be aware, the is a AOSP bug related to the flashlight, if you turn on your torch from quick settings doesnt matter if you turn in off there is a wakelock that will keep your phone awake until your bateery drains or you fire up the flash with your camera or reboot. Is present in all ROMs at this time.
My current setup:
Cataclysm 11 Oct + 17 oct delta + 20Oct delta (In that Order, they are little zips you have to flash on top of the already installed rom, like an OTA of some sort).
HellsCore kernel b84-M (Has double tap to wake, youll need kernel adiutor to enable it and also tweak the kernel if you wish to - My kernel setup has no weird ****, it works out of the box, all stock, ondemand governor).
Extras:
Double Tap on Statusbar to Sleep Enabler for Android M MOD (Only for AOSP Roms)
New Adreno Drivers (October 2015)
I guess both will be added to roms eventually, but at the moment there not. Only Franks rom has the new adreno driver.
Sorry for my english.
Awesome that was detailed thank you! Hm the flashlight bug is bad .. I use it a lot. Maybe I will wait for a fix then
I'm thinking about trying http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/development/fake-nexus-rom-nexus-4-t3230268
It claims that torch bug is fixed and other bonuses like Camera can launch via double tap power key, adreno drivers, and aldy kernel.
That sounds pretty good as well. Btw are there any informations about xposed and Marshmallow? It took some time for Lollipop but maybe the differences now aren't as big?

New N6P Owner, what are some killer features/apps/roms/kernels that I should try?

Hi,
So I just got my Nexus 6p and I've been using it for about a week. I have my bootloader unlocked and rooted but I'm still running stock. I'm coming from a Nexus 5 that was running Pure Nexus 7.1.1. I'm looking to mod the crap out of this phone to see what it can really do.
I would like to have gesture features while the screen is off (I know that double tap to wake is easy to activate), can anyone recommend a rom/kernel that would allow me to setup and customized gesture features similar to the Oneplus 3?
Is there an option to turn the fingerprint sensor into a track pack so that I can scroll up and down by swiping on it?
What rom/kernel are you using and what are some of the features that you love on your Nexus 6P?
What features/apps/roms/kernels would you recommend that I get?
Thanks!!!
UBERSTOCK
i used to follow the "advanced interactive gov page" hoping to achieve great battery life and performance. never got it. but recently ive been using uber rom by chad with his faster kernel. fastest rom ever and battery life is great! check it out. be sure to format to f2fs on data and cache. first boot takes a very very long time so be patient. link to his rom and kernel( theres a new file like everyday so i typically wait a couple days to clean flash again) https://temp.bbqdroid.org/
good luck!
What screen gestures do you want from OP3? Flash kernel supports screen on and off gestures (double tap, sweep) and camera launch gesture.
There are FPS gesture apps that let you assign actions for single tap, double tap and swipe.
Currently using Dirty Unicorns with Flash kernel. DU has some nice features like Fling (gesture navbar replacement) and OmniSwitch. DU is very stable with good battery life and performance. Highly recommend Lone4subs substratum theme if you end up flashing DU. It has DU themed quick settings and settings options.
You should take a look at ARISE if you listen to a lot of music and want to enhance audio quality.

I'm also pretty much new to the 6P.
I've installed Pure Nexus as well as the ElementalX kernel. I used Magisk 11.1 for root and to pass SafetyNet. Viper4Arise is a must for me.
I'm also looking for some more good apps or tweaks to enhance the experience even more. Post here if you find anything.

Thanks for the info! I saw in a video review of the OP3 the person drew the shape "V" on the turned off screen which activated the flashlight, I thought that it was a cool and useful feature. I'll check out the Flash kernel since it seems to have some double tap to wake which is what I really want. Does the battery life take a hit with DT to wake?
I've found this app called Fingerprint Gestures that allows me to do some really cool things like double tap to go back and fast tap to scroll down.

No problem.
With the 6P you can double press power button to launch camera. Swipe down is another option to launch camera if you use Flash kernel. Double tap to wake doesn't drain that much battery. I still get good idle drain (.2-.4% per hour).

I'll second this.
ElementalX supports overclocking, Franco does not.
I'm running 7.1.1, ElementalX, Magisk 11.1 for root and hiding.
thermal-engine.conf tweaks.
I've installed the SystemUI and framework from a Pixel so I have the animated nav and blue accents.
No other mods.

Rooting

I finally rooted and flashed a good kernel, putting it under test ATM.
I wanted to ask if flashing the XXX NoLimits magisk module worth it and really improves the experience on the OP 8 Pro, since it's not a ROM, it's only a Magisk module (flash type).
I don't mean anything to the team, I heard it was great but I just don't want to mess my phone up with modules and other things, thanks

I used to flash xxx on the OnePlus 5, it was a full ROM back then but it was the best out of them all..
If the module is anything like the ROM then yes it's well well worth it, the developer gets so much right so for me it would be a go to ROM / Magisk ROM
I wouldn't even touch the optimization settings and stuff, no modern device needs them.
Maybe only debloat but that's it.

Id 100% turn off the page file no device with more that 4GB ram needs swap storage certainly not a phone with 12GB, the improvement in regards to gaming is night and day, so yep there is that.

I have a saved config file from my time with the OnePlus 5 with xXx so I'll check on that and whatevers new.

Same, I have the 12gb RAM version so I don't think that any of these tweaks would really help, but I'll try some in the future, you know, we don't have much at the moment, the price of the phone is really high.
I run xXx with my own custom config on a OP8Pro 12GB/256GB with most tweaks emailed and zram disabled completely. Runs noticably faster overall. Snappier and launch times are super low. Also, even tho audio is good, the Viper + Dolby mod from xXx takes the speakers to a whooooole new level lol.
I always ran xXx on my old OP5 as well and it was great even tho I switched to Paranoid after a while just because I really love that UI style and customization. When PA Quartz is a bit more stable on the OP8Pro I will switch anyways but with xXx the stock ROM doesn't really miss anything that EdXposed and Gravitybox + Button Mapper + GCam can't fix like battery circle with percentage in it and flashlight shortcuts.

You know better than me, I'm not much into these things but you know, one that says it's great and the other says it's bad, the only way to know is to test it myself.
I tested the kernel, it's close to stock in terms of performance but the battery in stock is better.
The reason I'm using it is because I'm running xXx module which is best with Smurf kernel but I might get everything back to stock and test another kernel without the xXx module. Any recommendations?
EDIT: I just flashed blu spark kernel, I'll test it and tell you how it performs ?

Haven't flashed it but tbh the 865 is a beast of chip, it can easily run Dreamcast ROMs which is just staggering really. To push the chip any further is just not required.
For me if you can obtain the performance you get from the stock kernel and save battery then go for whatever that kernel is, from experience on all my device save maybe the galaxy S3 the stock kernel usually provides the best balance of performance / stamina, all the more so with current chipsets.
Aim for battery, performance should take care of itself.
If you're pushing for more performance I would ask myself for what?
I personally push my device more than most, not all the time but the emulators I run are probably the most demanding programs you can get on Android, if I'm good with the output of FPS on them at stock then I think you'll be fine too.
