Camera quality - ONE General

Hello everyone.
I've decided to open this post on JIRA : https://jira.cyanogenmod.org/browse/BACON-4582
It happens that this is problably one of the last updates CM is going to offer for us. Which means newer blobs won't be developed after it. Camera from Cyanogen OS and also CyanogenMod have a very bad picture quality. Creates artifacts as also do not record properly.
We have very poor picture on low light, and a very poor performer on camera quality.
This is related to bad blobs, not only to say that they are almost 2 years old, but also we have this problem since 2014.
So if you do not agree with this Camera quality and want to show CM that you are not happy with this performance. Make a vote, and leave a comment in that link stating your unhappiness with camera.
I believe if we all do this together, we actually will change.
Thanks

There is already a report of that. I think yours will be closed soon. Amd this bug is already exists for a very long time. Maybe you have more success with that. I hope with snapdragon camera many things will be changed and hopefully fixed.
Thats why is switched to sultans rom. He uses a camera hal without that bug.

AFAIK his hal doesnt fix this issues but oxygen blobs, which have other limitations.. Btw his hal perfectly uses all features available even if oxygen didnt implement these..

From what I observed while testing sultans rom, the auto white balance is broken.
Too much blue in daylight when shooting gras, too much red in lowlight situations.
I was annoyed constantly changing the white balance and went back to stock cm.

Maybe a strange question but since I notice you have a knowledge of white balance etc have you ever tried ColorOS ?
I've used it for a long time and I found the camera, and image quality, a lot better than CM. Well it is extremely difficult to check if you can't really compare side to side.
They were able to make the ColorOS camera to work on CM but to be honest I don't think that the result were the same.

Can anyone review Sultan's Camera (CAF Roms) vs CM13/COS13 camera blobs vs Color OS camera blobs?

I've taken some photos mate but for my own use so its stupid things like a photo of my keyboard, and a photo of my face (selfy) the back camera doesnt change too much (for me) but the front camera has a big difference to say its the same camera, still not perfect but much better especially on snapchat. However on snapchat on sultans, the exposer doesnt change where as on cm it does. It removed those weird purple green lines too for when u take a video. :good:

Hey guys, can we make a quick comparison between OOS / CM (stock) / ColorOS HAL/Blobs?
OxygenOS blobs:
+ good image quality
+ best video performance (1080p 60fps with audio; QHD&FHD video on front camera, slow-motion, etc.)
+ manual focus works (with ColorOS app)
- no slow shutter >2sec.
- most ColorOS plugins don't work (e.g. clear image 50mp)
ColorOS blobs:
+ very good image quality
+ fully compatible with ColorOS camera
+ 50MP
+ long exposure up to 64sec.
+ good video performance
- no slow motion (120fps @720p)
- no 1080p 60fps with audio
- only 720p front camera
CM / Stock blobs:
+ long exposure up to 64sec.
+ 50MP clear image
+ slow motion up to 120fps @720p
- worst image quality
- no 1080p @60fps with audio
- only 720p front camera
- bad overall video performance (artefacts, lines, etc.)
Roms:
OOS blobs: cm13 by SultanXDA
ColorOS blobs: cm13 by jpcaap / Darkobas
Stock: Stock Rom / Exodus
If something is wrong or you want to add something, please feel free to comment

This is something I want to know too. I think its the cm one pal. If your on the rom, go to snapchat and check if exposure is working. If not then its caf, if it is then cm

Now I've been wondering about this for a while! Can't really do scientific comparison on my end, but since now Darkobas uses ColorOS blob, I'm def gonna try it out.
Either way, I wouldn't hope CM develops our camera further...and so far, best over-all camera experience is with Sultan's.

Jumped from Sultan's CM13 rom to CM13 Nightly because of battery issues on Sultan's. All I can say right now picture quality from stock CM13 nightly is decent enough when you turned off Zero Shutter Lag.

Yes. I agree with you. Missed the old kitkat days.. Better battery life and camera. Now, I'm on Darkobas that has ColorOS camera hal. The front camera is grainy on Snapchat.. I try to live with that for now. Overall camera quality is decent.. Way better than CM13 camera hal. But still, Sultan's camera hal is the best for our device! I flashed Darkobas because of battery life issues that I faced on Sultan's rom.. If not, Sultan CM13 is the best

Why not install any rom you like and simply install sultans camera Hal in it.? Wouldn't be the same results in camera quality?

Dead Cookies leave no trails...
After using purity, sultans cm13, cm13, DU rom, AOSPA, roms, I have to say that the stock OOS camera is unmatched. Nothing comes close, not even with sultan hal installed, (even if stock OOS suffers from low fps in dark light). In terms of clarity, and image quality is by far the best. Combined with the best possible GSM reception and by far the fastest LTE speeds (in most cases not even close in rom vs OOS speeds tested in the very same spot) is a no brainer for me. At least for now, until some roms incorporate those two major assets. On the other hand every single one custom rom are by a far smoother than OOS, more memory distribution efficient, and of course by a far more customisable. That's my point of view after all those tests. Depending on priorities, each of as makes its choice.

Did you try the OOS camera ported on MM Roms, for example Sultan's CM13?
I only tired OSS abd Sultan CM13.
IMO, OSS.
Ive tried the OOS port into all of the above roms, but although it was a bit better than the roms integrated camera apps, was nowhere near the OOS clarity. I dont know what the stock OOS does with the camera quality, but it's significantly ahead (even fir someone that is no photographer or photo expert) of other roms. Something it's in the coding, or settings, I don't realy know, but the difference is easily noticeable.

CM13 with Google Camera and OOS Camera is pretty good

It's placebo. The same exact HAL is used in custom ROMs. The only thing you could possibly be referring to is the camera app itself and whatever they call it... Clear something or other...
Pics are taken without clear mod or any other special setting. Maybe it's a placebo effect, but the difference was obvious from the first time I installed a custom rom. No matter how good was the rom (in most cases was much better than OOS in terms of smoothess), and still till now that installed the OOS back I have the same opinion. Maybe it's a placebo effect I don't know.

So Stock OOS has better cam quality vs Sultans Cam HAL OOS?
Yes ...stock camera is way bettr or u can say..Cm13 camera sucks
Sent from my ONE E1003 using XDA-Developers mobile app
It really depends...Stock camera app reduces a lot of noise, making the pics seem better. It actually removes detail in the process of removing noise. btw you can just flash OOS camera app on cm13 or other rom and it will be like stock (except clear image wont work, but clear image is really more of a marketing gimmick, it removes a lot of noise from pics, taking away lots of detail)
Do you know you can also remove noise on CM13 camera (snap)?
I have tried OOS camera port in every other rom I have installed, and the result was nowhere near the OOS camera in OOS. I don't know what it's different, may there is something more, but im convinced that its not a placebo effect. I dont know. If you count also the fact that lte speed is wayyyyy faster ( in OOS ookla test maxed at 125 maps, instead of 40 in every other rom in the same spot and time of day. I also don't know what seams to be the problem in custom roms for now ) than every custom rom, for me is a no go for custom roms. At least for now. And I must say that I love their smoothness. But.....

In my experience picture quality depends heavily on the camera app used. Ie i get awful results with snap cam. Using fv-5 and camera zoom which produce nice quality (running aicp, stock hal)

Camera Quality (Comparison of various Rom Cameras)

This thread is solely created to compare the same picture (same exposure setting, ISO, focus, shutter time, etc) captured by the camera of various ROMS. Comparing like this is very effective to assess the quality of the camera and help the developers improve it
Feel free to suggest your favourite roms and I'll be happy to compare them all side by side. (Yes ! I've got a tripod to take steady pictures ). You can also post pictures taken (Sticking to the purpose of the thread can be helpful), they being the same images taken in different ROMs. I will post pictures from every rom weekly or biweekly
Most of the pictures will be indoors, so that the lighting is equal for every rom camera shoot
THE FULL SIZED PICTURES CAN BE FOUND IN MY DRIVE
THE PICTURES PROVIDED ARE CHOSEN AMONG THE MANY PICTURES SHOT FOR BETTER COMPARISON. THIS THREAD ISN'T AIMED TO PROVE WHICH ROM IS BETTER ! EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT TASTES AND CHOICES ! HENCE THE PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD IS TO HELP EACH PERSON TO CHOOSE HIS INTERESTED ROMS BASED ON CAMERA QUALITY !
For every picture taken, the following were the settings
Auto Exposure : Frame Average
Picture Quality : 100%
Zero Shutter Lag : Off
Rest else Auto and same settings
The following are the ROMs to be compared
1.) Cyanogen OS 13
2.) Cyanogen MOD 13 (Not sure if there is gonna be any notable difference between the two)
3.) H2Os 2.0
4.) Oxygen OS 2.1.4
5.) Sultan's CM 13 (8th August Build)
6.) Latest JgCaap's (Color OS Blobs - Darkobas builds also have the same blobs)
7.) Latest Exodus
8.) Latest CandySix
9.) Latest Orion OS
10.) Marsh (20th June Build)
11.) Latest TugaPower (Both MM and N)
I guess a comparison between blobs is going to be more practical than including roms with the same hal!!And afaik we have 3 hals
Sultan:used in candy/RR CAF//Sultan Cm13//
Coloros: Used in Jgcap
And Cm:used in most of cm based roms
You can check this post for the differences

It makes me sad that no one tried implementing the color os hal other than jgcaap from my own experience sultans hal is meh compared to color os hal, and OOS hal isn't much better than sultans (cm hal is horrible, tried it once and never again). Both Sultan and OOS are seriously lacking clarity and low-light performance. All my pictures are fuzzy unless there's a direct light source. Whereas with color os, I've taken pics of beachfires at night and there's little to no fuzzies, and colors are accurate. I even manage to capture the suns light rays. The other hals for whatever reason struggled with that.

[APP] [PORT] MIUI Camera for Mi5 [REQUEST] [POLL]

I have used many ROMs based on Lineage OS here.
Testing camera performance especially front camera for selfie.
MIUI camera delivers exceptionally amazing selfies.
I have tested Open Camera on MIUI and the selfie quality went bad, selfies became dull as same as they are in Lineage cameras.
This means the App is the key to better selfies.
If its possible to Port that app, Many users on internet willing to donate for the same.
Also this will improve overall device feel and experience on LineageOS.
If this thread becomes capable to attract at least one developer who shows interest in this we will be lucky.
Participate with your ideas and try to attract Developers here.If you are willing to Donate for this project kindly do mention.
I've seen this happen on every Xiaomi phone I've owned. On all of them there's a thread of people really wanting a port of the MIUI camera, but on none of them is it possible. The MIUI camera is part of the MIUI framework and won't work without it. So unless someone makes a Magisk module of the MIUI framework that plays nicely with AOSP and ports the camera it won't be possible
Guys please participate in this thread.
Participation is only key to get Dev attention.

I think that is just the app, it doesn't include the low level firmware optimisations. It doesn't work on the MI5,and it's based on MIUI5 which is 4years old. The fact that we haven't made progress post that is testiment to how difficult it is to port the camera firmware. Atm the only solution is dual bootiing, and using a MIUI based ROM if you go out to take pictures (like on a holiday). It's ****ty, but it's what we're stuck with. Google Camera works OK on Lineage for quick snaps anyway.
Wait for next update of the snap camera. I am sure it will rock
I have realized that MIUI has really developed its camera app over the time, even if some other camera app are launched. They will not catchup with this app. Hence if we have a scope to use this existing piece of work we must port it rather than focusing on other means.
I just hope some developer has seen this thread and considering to take on this project.
will a camera port be ever available?
I really like the MIUI camera because the focus peaking option, who else ?
guys I have talked to developers, they are saying that it's not possible to port this camera.
And if it was possible, someone in XDA community would have already ported it like these is Google camera.
So if you want great photos, be on MIUI.
Guys, Sad news is Developers have denied to make any such port.
They say MIUI camera has something to do with Miui framework also this camera is Closed Source.
Sadly in summary If you want to use your phone for camera stay on MIUI only.
Use raw shooting for max quality for both AOSP and MIUI. As it pulls raw data without any touch you can get superrior quality compared to MIUI camera app.

Do we lose camera detail when installing other ROMs than Oxygen OS/Freedom OS?
Or we keep the same because OOS is AOSP?

Camera quality will be slightly worse until we get sultanxda and some others working on it. Oneplus is great with releasing kernel source, but they won't release camera blobs, so getting camera quality up takes some Dev work.

Camera: OOS vs Paranoid vs sultan vs GCam port

Hi,
I'm opening this thread to discuss the several camera options there are available, so that all are informed by the options available.
There is OOS camera with HD and HDR.
There Paranoid camera which claims to be even better than stock OOS
Sultan camera, which sultanxda put a lot of effort improving the camera
GCam port that has HDR+
Share your experience with each, saying which camera you like best. If possible, detail the best camera that:
- provides the most accurate color
- provides the best motion/action picture
- provides the best low light condition
Share your photos indicating the camera app was used.
I personally use gcam to do most of my shooting. It provides the best dynamic range and image "crispness". I also enjoy how quick it shoots too.
The only time I'll switch from it is to shoot raw and manual on the Stock OOS camera.
When I'm shooting video (1080p 60fps) I usually use the OOS camera just because 60fps in gcam stutters for me on occasion.

I'm very curious about PA. Can you share some pics?
I have used paranoid android 7.3 and I have realised that OOS camera is the best in low lighting as PA camera also does well in good lighting condition.
Paranoid camera app is very good. 60 fps on 1080p works very good. It is snappy too. OOS camera on latest beta not that snappy.

What do you think about low light photos in PA? And motion pictures? Can you share some pics?
I have used the OOS camers on OB17 / OB16 / OB15
I have also used the Google camera app.
In my opinion the OOS camera app is better at low-light shooting plus regular shooting is pretty good. I have not tried the latest ported version of the OP5 OOS camera app but I am curious, so will probably try at some point.
I have not used PA. The Sultanxda camera app has a boatload of options which in my opinion is overkill for a regular user like me.

I hasn't used paranoid ever, can't help in this regard, i myself curious about paranoid
Thats my usage:
Low light: Google cam with HDR+
Daylight in raw: OOS
Daylight jpg: Google cam with HDR+
Video: OOS
Personally I'm using Google Camera for quick shots at college, but at parties or something, I'm shooting RAWs with Snap Camera HDR - because it limits max ISO to 799, where OOS can go up to 3200 (and leave you with very much noise).
For videos I'm using OOS camera - recording 1080p60.
Daytime: Stock OOS Cam
Nighttime: Google Cam HDR+ :good:
Is there a version of the updated PA camera from 7.3.1? for me PA Cam so far gave the best results regarding image detail, since it doesnt use noise reduction, or it can at least be setup so.

Even compared with OOS?
Some photos I took solely to note the differences in low light for noise and color reproduction:
17-06-22 - OnePlus 3T - ROM & Camera Image Processing Comparison - Paranoid, Sultan, Oxygen

I currently use the Google Camera port with HDR, though for long exposures I use the OxygenOS camera, and also like that one for full resolution bursts.

Just compare the file sizes of those two camera apps, the details in OOS cam get a disgusting watercolor effect.
the ones from PA cam look nice and are like 10mb bigger than OOS camera ones.

The new PA update should improve the camera app. It is possible to compare with that version? Specially in low light and motion/action shots? I like OOS camera, but in low light and motion/action shots... Could be better. I'm curious about PA in these scenarios

No, as this was all done months ago and I wouldn't be able to set up the exact same scene, and don't wish to re-flash all of the various roms, rename files, etc.
...Though I'd certainly pay for a good photographer to do this with the various ROMs in different conditions.
