You could always dirty flash and see what happens. Usually when just updating the same rom you will be OK. But if anything goes wrong you know why.

update.
finally decided to dirty flash (been busy with projects at my shop) and worked out perfectly. just had to flash elementalx again and xposed with no issues. just sad that DPI and some other settings are gone. I changed it in build.prop and not everything changes resolution like it did before. the icons on my homescreen and my lockscreen don't seem to have change in size. pretty much the only thing that didn't change so I can live with it till I decide to not be lazy and mess around a little more. I've been building a jeep and a bumper for my truck for the tech side has scaled back a bit.

Flashed my 1st ROM today (Very Exciting:) Have a ?

Today I flashed my 1st ROM (MYN's Warm 2.2) very exciting and exhilirating. I also downloaded HTC Kernel #17. I used Unrevoked 3 to get superuser and used My Backup Pro to backup. I used this guys instructions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvWcIBcZvxw
Everything seem to go fine. I did what he said and wiped Dalvik and Cache after I installed Myn's ROM. Will that automatically install the HTC Kernel #17 after a reboot or do I have to manually do that like I installed the ROM in Recovery. Also what does the Kernel do? I follow you guys alot on XDA and you guys are VERY HELPFUL. Thanks for any help
Also, what are some other cool ROM's. I can see this becoming an addiction
Myn's ROM comes with the HTC #17 kernel already, so you don't have to flash it. If you'd like to install a kernel though, it would be flashed the same way as the ROM.
The kernel is the primary system components of the OS.
Thanks for your quick reply. After I installed Myn's ROM I wiped Cache and Dalvik again, will this hurt me and will I need to install MYN's ROM again. Everything seems to be working fine.

Everything is fine. The Dalvik cache is built upon first boot of a new system. You wipe it after installing a new rom to remove the remnants from the old one. You can wipe the dalvik as much as you want honestly, it's just going to make your next reboot take longer because of having to build the dalvik up again
Cool. Thanks. This whole flashing ROM's is pretty darn cool.
Welcome to the club!
Myn is a very popular ROM for good reason. Another popular ROM is CyanogenMod 6.1. It is missing 4G and HDMI at the moment, but the team is working on getting those included. A lot of people swear by it!
I have heard about CyanogenMod 6.1, but keep reading good things about MYN's Warm 2.2. So far so good
No need to change if you are happy with what ya' got!
I know a dude who has the Fresh ROM and when he turns his EVO to landscape and if he is ion Apps, they will turn landscape as well. That's really nice

I just flashed my first last week, I think I flashed my 4th ROM this past w/e but I wound up going back to the 2nd one. I've tried the following ROM's if you're interested??:
- MIUI (12.3) Awesome ROM, imho, but it was somewhat buggy still related to MMS, receiving voicemails and 4G no worky. It DOES have some really cool features built into it that most other ROM's you'd have to download the app for it's features.
- Evo NonSense (3.3) I really like this ROM too, somewhat similar to the stock but has a cooler look and like the way it navigates via ADW.
- Myn (RLS4) I liked this ROM but, honestly, was a little let down by it's simple layout, I think the hype I've been reading about Myn ROM's got me a little over anxious........lol.
- CyanogenMod (6.1) I think I had this one up and running the shortest, it didnt really do much for me but I will admit that I think I was in too grumpy of a mood possibly so I might try it again. The biggest reason for it's short lived existence is the lack of 4G, like a few others above.
I wound up going back to Evo NonSense just cuz I like the way it navigates around, the slide lock screen and overall look/appeal of it. I'm about to upload it's latest version.....

Man, thanks for that explanation, I was unaware of it's importance since I didnt know what it really did.
Not to raid the O/P thread but I think the answer might benefit him as well. One thing that I've noticed jumping around different ROM's is that I lose important information cached in my Apps. Is there anyway to recover that information from the back up and reinstall on a freshly installed ROM?
For an ex. I use PasswordSafe Lite to store all my important pw's and account info......I just noticed when I sync'ed up to AppBrain the information is gonzo.......is there anyway to avoid this from happening or backing it up or actually getting into a backed up copy to copy n paste that data in???
TIA!

that's pretty normal. I don't think the early Sprint roms did that, but I think the later ones do. Also pretty much any other launcher you install will do the same thing.
I keep hearing about launchers (like launcher pro). What do they do and do you install them like a ROM? What is a good Launcher?

They allow you to use a different launcher other than sense, which means you can customize it to your hearts content also you can do landscape mode which is what you are after. Launcher pro and adw are the most popular I prefer launcher pro but try them both out for yourself also they are both found in the android market which means you dont have to flash them like roms or kernels GL man if you need anymore help pm me bro
Thanks bro. I just dl'ed Launcher Pro. Will try it out. I do LOVE that loop scrolling. That's really cool
Edit: Quick question. One of the main things I like about HTC Sense is the Flip Clock with My Location and Temp. I don't see a Clock Widget for Launcher Pro. Is there a clock like this for launcher pro? thx
You want fancy widget my friend. Sense style clicks for launcher pro. You can get it in the market.

I used My Backup Pro and it backs up Apps and Data as well. It will backup to your SD Card OR their Servers
This ROM is eating battery quickly I have the 3500mah battery and as soon as I take it off of AC Charge it drops 5% in a matter of a couple of minutes and drops 10% in about 10 minutes. On stock it would take about an hour to drop 10% (this is all without doing anything). I am doing the same as before, nothing has changed other than I put on this ROM. Anyone have any suggestions?

[Q] Is Nexus 7 supposed to be this way? (laggy)

Nexus 7 32GB is my first android device. Before I bought it, most people were saying that android is finally smooth, project butter and so on. But that's not the case here. I'm on 4.2.2 stock, have currents sync disabled, my storage is only half full, and my Nexus is starting to get on my nerves.
- screen rotation takes exactly 4 seconds, no exception.
- apps sometimes freeze, forcing me to force close them or even reboot occasionally.
- even some simple games, like Dragonvale, run like stop motion in certain segments.
- when I install ANY app, it seems that android service responsible to put icon on my home screen takes 100% CPU time for 10-15 seconds or so.
- when there are app updates, my nexus is unusable. Takes 10+ seconds for any action.
Say what you want about windows phone, but that thing flies. Am I maybe spoiled by it's buttery smoothness so android by comparison irritates me, or is there really something wrong with my Nexus? I already did hard reset once, early on. It did not help. Should I try again? If so, what backup solution is the easiest?
I know I might be asking a lot and that there are threads about this already, but info is scattered, and there are numerous contradicting opinions and advices. Basically I am just not sure if this is how it's supposed to be, or should I try something.
The lag after installing app is there because of R/W being made to internal memory. App's icons on homescreen are being placed by Play. You can disable it in it's settings. But the rest sounds like a rouge app. Are you sure this lag is there even after fresh system installation?

How do I detect a rouge app? Task manager? Can you recommend one?
It was slow to start with. Disabling currents sync did not help. And I did do reset in the first few days. Did not help.
Now, it's just even more slower. Perhaps by as much as 50% in some actions, if I can put a number on a subjective impression.

Well if you want better performance... ROMs and kernels are the things to mess with.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
You should probably flash a ROM/kernel for best performance. But if you still don't want to mess with ROMs, reflash the stock rom and reroot it. That's what helped me.
I've had some issues with my phone lagging during/after app update, and i've only recently nailed down the culprit. Turns out it was the Root Uninstaller app that was making backups of older versions of the apps during the update, it ceased after i turned off the option in it's settings (or just uninstall). My guesstimate would be that you have some app that is doing just that. Because my own n7 doesn't noticeably lag even if i try to update many (as much as 10) apps at the same, which usually kills my single-core SGSL into a reboot shortly after trying this.
I think 4.2 is just buggy. It flies for me sometimes and on some devices, and sometimes it crawls horribly. Maybe the next android version will fix this, maybe not
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
This helped me a little (If you don't use Currents then this could help)
1. Go to Settings > Apps > All (swipe right 2 times) > Currents
2. Click "Force Stop"
3. Click "Disable"
It should be now fixed for some of it. Like the earlier posts suggest, maybe reflashing stock ROM or installing a kernel (once you're comfortable) will help for sure.
It seems messing with kernels and roms is the best way to do it.
And even though I'm asking this on XDA, I'm not really comfortable with that, especially considering that I've come across the word "bricked" many a times. Especially since I have almost two years of warranty left.
I'll give it a thought and see if I'll go along. It depends how irritating the lag becomes. But by the looks of it, I'll end up with a windows 8/blue tablet next time around, when the next gen silicone from AMD and Intel is ready. I'm much more comfortable with windows environment.
AW: [Q] Is Nexus 7 supposed to be this way? (laggy)
If you're having a lot of apps installed you can get ram problems. Some apps are running in the background even if they don't need to. If you wanna know which apps those are simply go to apps and swipe to the second panel. There you can see which asps are running in the background .You should delete them. If you don't want to do that simply download the app Greenify
(You should have more than 200mb free)

Get rid of your Nexus and buy a bloody surface then?
In regards to your question, if you've Rooted but cannot install Adaway then it seems you haven't rooted correctly.
This may be the source of your issues.
As explained before, factory reset, re-root and then if you really wanna see it fly take our advice.
A good start is Paranoid Android and Faux123 Kernel (I've been using this combo since I bought my nexus, and yes I've tried other combo's I just can't stay away). Paranoid is an epic ROM, and IMO Faux cannot be beaten. He finds the absolute perfect point between performance and battery !!.
Unless you seriously can't follow directions you won't brick your device. People throw that term around when they are far from bricked. Just make sure you understand the steps of anything you are doing and use good sense. If things go sideways, don't just start doing things blindly. Research the problem you are having, and ask for help if you need it.
But you shouldn't have to run a custom rom to get smooth performance. Like has been suggested I'd go back to stock. Root, and add things back as you need them. See if it runs smooth with only a basic set of apps installed.
Your N7 will be fastest on a custom ROM/kernel. But it should be perfectly usable on a stock setup.

RT is a joke, and PRO is too expensive and has awful battery life. I'll wait and see how temash and baytrail turn out to be. But that's besides the point, since I'll still keep nexus as an ultra-mobile device.
In any case, can I backup all the data, reset, and get EVERYTHING back, or will I need to do something manually? I'll definitely try to reset/re-root.
But I don't see what I did wrong. I mean, I can install every app on the market that requires root

It honestly shouldn't lag like that. Even bone stock.
One thing you can do right away is go into developer settings (click 7 times on Build Number in About Tablet to enable) and change all animation settings to.5 or to none.
DL Root Checker, or just try to use any root app to see if you actually do have root. Even with the wonderful toolkits (which will also save your bacon if you get into a bootloop) getting root to stick can be tricky...you may have to run it a couple of times.
But the best results will come if you flash a custom rom and kernel. if you like a tweaked stock experience, try CleanRom Inheritance. It uses the Aroma installer, so it's very easy and customizable. It can be found under Android Development.

You can use titanium backup. It there others like carbon. But titanium has been around the longest and it's my preferred way. Requires root, and it should warn you at start up if you aren't rooted correctly.
I would do as others suggested and just restore basic apps after factory reboot and re root. Then slowly restore others to see if you notice other problems along the way.
Also, if you didn't know. You can install kernels without wiping tablet and changing the whole Rom. I would definitely try that eventually too.
One more thing to note. Don't judge android on chrome (not that you mentioned it, but I know a lot of newbies have). It's one of the slowest browsers. It has tons of great features which I love, but do slow compared to most others. I wish I wasn't so addicted to its syncing.
Thanks to everyone on advices.
1) root checker says I do not have proper root. Now that I think about it, I did update my Nexus 7 from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2. I guess that also removed root.
2) I will reset. I don't really have any messages or photos or app data that is not already in the cloud that I need to backup.
3) I'll try to gradually install everything app by app to see if it's a rouge app.
4) I'll than revive this thread with my results. Though I doubt I'll get to doing all that in the next few days.
Again, thanks everyone!

Is stock good enough for you?

I've been playing with this tablet for about a day now and I must say, I don't think I've ever had the feeling that I didn't need to Root for any reason, but this tablet just works so well out of the box that I'm not missing anything in terms of performance or applications.
I was just wondering if anyone decided to forgo the flashing/rooting/roming process because the tablet just works.
Amen brother. So good out of the box... Just tasted Google Play Music as well... Wow! Almost don't even need Nova Launcher with stock JB 4.3 haha I might not bother rooting this time round unless something really uber comes along
Well I do think it is very nice out the box. Smooth and snappy. So, yes stock is good enough for me right now. I have root and recovery, so if some custom rom comes along and it looks interesting, I may try it out. However, until that image is released, everybody is going to be pretty close to stock. The only thing I don't like is the toggles/tiles don't work like they should. I tap the wifi tile and it opens the settings for wifi, not turn it on. Not a big deal tho...
Nope. I need the custom re-boot menu and quiet hours and I can no longer live without Pie.
THe stock worked perfectly tho. I had no issues at all.
Gotta have root for the six axis app so I can game it up with my ps3 c controller

Action Launcher doesn't count in this discussion, personally. It's basically good enough to kick the tar out of launchers on just about any framework you'll ever find (although it does look a tad out of place on my otherwise Sense-running HTC One).
Mostly yes, but I still root because I enjoy using Greenify and there are some other behaviors that require more permissions than stock Android will give us. The inclusion of the app permission manager though is quite wonderful.

Long hold. They reversed the behavior from 4.2. Short tap = settings, Long tap = toggle on/off. Quite honestly, I prefer it in the 4.3 way better. I really don't turn off WiFi or Bluetooth, and having to go settings -> wireless -> bluetooth to get to the bluetooth settings was a bit much.
I root for the couple of apps that need it, but I run stock otherwise. Did on my original N7 as well.

I am happy with my stock setup right now. I am unlocked and rooted though. I also tried a couple of kernels but I am back to stock kernel. Same with ROMs. I will continue trying new ROMs but will keep using stock for now. My ultimate ROM will be a stable/clean ROM with Tablet UI.

Thanks. You are a shining example of conversational excellence.
Stock rom will be good enough until all if not all issues are resolved with the CM. Till then, ijust have my N7 rooted for titanium back up and other misc apps that require root.
Stock is good enough for my needs, but I installed CM anyway just to get that little extra

Running stock + Root + Extra Power Menu
At least right now that is good enough since its so quick. I'd like to try out other roms or have a good kernel but going to wait til more testing is done with what is out there and get some of the bugs worked out as I've tried them but get mixed results for performance and stability. Right now stability is key and performance is very good as is stock, but more is always better, in due time
I find I miss the little things CM had. For example when downloading. In stock the arrow stays there constantly lit, it doesn't do the animation.
Thing is, it might look and feel smooth, but it can always get better. Rooting and custom ROMS just simply allow the further enhancements, customization, smoothness, and potential to save battery life. I really don't see any reason not to Root/use custom ROMS for any case as long as your comfortable with the process. Maybe if the device was used for business i could understand that maybe, but for personal usage why not take advantage of whats out there instead of settling for less? It's not like it voids your warranty anyways when you can always restore it to stock before turning it in.
To be honest I cant see how anyone can live without some of the great things that require root
Linaro/03 optimized kernels
Overclocking
PER APP DPI
Trickstermod
Rom Toolbox
Lux autobrightnes (If you read books on this puppy it's a must)
Fully featured equalizer - seriously this needs to be universal on all devices
SD Maid
Titanium backup
Custom toggles, and AOKP ribbon controls
Custom boot animations
...Stickmount (don't you need root for this?)
And thats just off the top of my head stuff that I personally use all the time. So I guess most of that stuff could be run on a "stock" setup, but where is the fun in that. What is the point in investing in suck an awesome dev device, and not loading up on the fantastic tools that have been made possible through the hard work of XDA's members?

Try a different browser, dolphin is awesome, and shows you tons of details when you download files. The notification icon itself is very unobtrusive.
Except that recent versions of dolphin have made it horribad. I found it so slow as to be unusable and have moved to chrome. Dolphin also force quits on my phone all the time for no apparent reason. Used to love it.

I'm installing it today on my 2013 Nexus 7 - I'll post up my results/thoughts later today or early tomorrow.

JESUS CHRISTTTTwe need that operating system. I put it on my cousins n5 and my god dude its constant 60 frames per second, no lag or stutter ANYWHERE its like it puts ios to shame for once because its like 5 times smoother than ios. Its literally the smoothest thing ive ever used.
I might start getting into devving again if things dont start up here idk if sources are released yet but we really need that operating system... First time since i got the g3 that i want stock android again.

Sorry... Not much of a developer. But I'm sure someone has already started working on this!

I have my n7 ready but id have to backuo my carbon rom and all that.. Too much work lmao

N5 on ART was already faster than G3 on ART due to the os being light and without a ton of stuff.
the Lolipop preview isn't that buttery smooth as some might want to make it. put some apps there and you will see it stutters from time to time, though the animations and everything are cool and it looks fast and polished for a preview.
if / when we get lolipop from LG we will see how fast it will be on our hardware (given the screen and so on ...).
Kitkat was lighting fast on the n5 as well
Got it installed yesterday on my N7 2013 and the tablet is much faster than it was on Kit Kat.
I've found so many positives I don't even know where to begin.
Can't wait to get this on my G3!!!

Not sure about that.
I used Wugs Nexus Root Toolkit to root/unlock then ADB to flash the Lollipop 5.0 image.
I really didn't care about my data on the N7 - I had backed up all my files before I started so I just wiped the tablet clean.
Used it earlier today, very impressive.
Would be great if one day we'll get to experience it on the G3!
Yes I used it on the n7 but went back to KitKat. I want it when everything is ready and I want a kernel with faux colors. The display is faded and I'm so used to colors that pop

Best ROM for the Nexus 6P ??

Hey everyone.
In your opinion , what's the best ROM for the Nexus 6P ? Talking about battery life , performance and etc...
I also love the ones who come with the pixel look and features , there are quiet a few.

I have only tried Pure Nexus, Cortex and MegaPixel. Personally I like MegaPixel best and that one was giving me much better battery life than the others. For performance, I didn't notice any difference between them.
PN have a lot of customization options if that's interesting, while MP is more pure pixel feeling.

You can flash it now, I was on nougat 7.1.
A update is on the way, so I would wait for it.
I think it's coming very soon.

Try omnirom, close to AOSP only with the features that are needed, also very good standby time i have ever seen.
Stock.

There are many greats on Nexus. Just flash around until you find one you love then make a backup and flash em all for a few days each and see what you like best. Everyone is different. Don't worry your phone can handle being flashed. I've been going hard for 5-6 years. Lol. Some of my personal favs are:
Dirty Unicorns, SAOSP, ABC ROM, Screw'd, Cortex...
Flash away. ?

Yep, just flash away and enjoy the party...

Haha , thank you very much. I used to do that on my LG G2 , maybe I'll do it again on my 6P. But anytime I flash something , I loose everything , like pictures and stuff ... Does anyone know how to keep all that do the next ROM ?

Hi... Install TWRP. Flash SuperSU or TWRP won't survive a reboot. In TWRP select wipe>advanced wipe> tick: dalvik/art cache, cache, data and system. Then proceed to install the custom rom of your choice.
Just be sure NOT to wipe "internal storage"
Always backup beforehand...

Yeah, you're right... TWRP offers the option NOT to wipe internal storage selecting only data in advanced wipe option.
Internal storage = your datas.
Data = app datas, etc...
But since issues are likely to happen during ROM flashes, backup everything before you start playing with your phone, just in case...

Rom android 7.X.X with miracast working and 1080p 60fps ??
Inviato dal mio Nexus 6P utilizzando Tapatalk
Really depends on personal preference but my current favorite ROM for 6P is Dirty Unicorns due to stability, frequent updates, features and good battery life and performance. Works great with Flash kernel.
BlackScreenOS, hands down.

#StayBroken
Dude, you need to go Broken. You all need to go Broken.
Once you #GoBroken you'll #StayBroken.
Dysfunctional Developers BrokenOS ROM.
What makes Broken stand out ?? Two things, the level of optimization and the level of custumizability. The BrokenOS ROM for Angler is INSANELY optimized. For instance, in the Google Play store, when scrolling down "your apps" list as fast as you can, the scrolling always stops to wait for the content cache update speed to catch up with the scrolling speed, every few pages downwards.
On a fresh flash of Broken, I can scroll from top to bottom in one long, smooth, fast-as-lightning scroll, while "flipping" frantically downward on the screen with my fingers to scroll as fast as I can. I have never, ever been able to do that on any ROM on any device before. Yes, you can tweak and tune with cache-values and such and get super-fast super-smooth scrolling on any ROM, but this has it right out of the box and it doesn't compromise with resources and other features. Because that level of optimization can be felt in every little feature and function of the ROM. They don't just use a kernel config app like Synapse for optimizing settings, they've made their very own Broken optimized version of Synapse for the Broken ROM.
BrokenOS doesn't feel like a ROM that's made to impress or have more features, whistles or bells than everybody else, or anything like that, it feels like it quite simply is made to be the best possible ROM for the Angler, period.
Reaper doesn't seem quite as solid to me, even if it has that fast and smooth scrolling thing and such going for it too. It just lacks that un-definable X-factor that sets true masterpieces like Broken apart. But it'll get there, I could feel some of the awesomeness from Broken in the last Reaper-release a week ago or so, and now I see there's another new release just 12 hours ago. I also use xposed for some bank and ticket-apps and such to work with root, so I'm still on Broken, but just replace the word "Broken" with "Reaper" in this comment.
Now you're all very confused.
Broken = 6.0.1
Reaper = 7.1.1
Both is a ROM from Dysfunctional ROMs, one of those ultra-hard-core-enthusiast-developers groups who think they are too good for XDA and won't bother with all the "nonsense", and whom I for once grant them every right to think so, hehe.
As a flash-aholic and theme-junkie, it's a bitter sweet awesomeness though, because after you go Broken there's no more places to go, no more ROM's to flash. Once you go Broken everything else quite simply feels like a step back and down, like you're degrading and like rubbish.
You won't find it here on XDA, and you know how it is, so I ain't gonna provide any links, but just #StayBroken and you'll get there.
Another hidden masterpiece out there that I use with this ROM is the Substratum Theme CrystalTronik Dark. A black and Tron-like cyan theme that really shows the awesomeness of AMOLED, with the letters looking like glowing candy floating in pitch black darkness. Or it's really not that hidden, come to think about it, since it's one of the show-case themes shown in the Substratum app, or else you'll find it in the Substratum G+ forum.
Again, CrystalTronik Dark is THE theme I've been looking for all my life, since I've literally been looking for just exactly a black and blue to cyan theme which is just that, and no more, so somewhat bitter-sweet to finally have that too. ^^
