Amazon now recognizes there's a bricking problem when updating OS 4.5.5.1 to developers preview. If you got bricked by this and Amazon refused refund/replacement of non-warrantied device, try again.
I got an Amazon Warehouse HD7 yesterday (no warranty) and updated OS 4.5.5.1 to developers preview to make sure it would brick. It did. Today I got a refund with free return shipping, no questions asked.
FWIW, I first reported the dead device at Amazon's developer portal, so I had a ticket# to give Amazon CS, but I really don't think that was necessary. Here's a snippet of the chat:
Initial Question: I got a Fire HD 7 running OS 4.5.5.1 and updated to the developers preview and the tablet immediately died. This is a known problem: https://forums.developer.amazon.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=28320溠
. . .
03:23 PM DoLooper: I reported at developers portal: Case# 1627800631, but i want a refund and will buy another one.
03:24 PM Jason: Certainly!
Allow me a moment to get that refund issued to you
03:27 PM Jason: Would you like the refund to be issued back onto your Visa card Looper?
03:27 PM DoLooper: Yes please
03:27 PM Jason: Alright, done!
. . .
thank you for the info. amazon really screwed up

LOL, I did the same with a Fire HD 6 that I hard bricked, and they replaced it, But with a kids edition, Then I had them replace it again and got another kid's edition but eh, what ever I kept it and waited for it to update to 5.0.1

Hey Guys,
If anyone can lead me in the right direction for root once I receive my phone tomorrow I'd appreciate it. If I receive the MI9 build it would be easy but I was wondering if there is a root (and if so please supply the link) for the MJ7 build that recently came out?
Thank you in advance! Appreciate it!
There is an app out there that at the moment is taboo on XDA, as people are nervous about it collecting your phone's IMEI. Plenty of info in the general section along with a thread on their response. Plus the app has a Facebook page. Read up, see what you think, and make a decision
I'm personally waiting it out for now until I see more info. I took the MJ7 OTA to see if it'd help, and it seems to have at least some. I'd like to at least clean up the stock rom but i can live with it a bit longer.

This can root and unroot your device flawlessly.

(N9006 works for Verizon as well)
Download the sketchy software.
While downloading this one click root method. And it installs drivers.
Take a look at these two threads.
Realize there is nothing to worry about. And join the thousands of us who are rooted with out any problems on mj7. (Or whatever the ota was. )

So you're saying upgrade to the latest OTA even if phone doesn't come with it and then do this method to root? Do you have this done on yours if you don't mind me asking?
I missed out on buying from Staples for $74 the other day (they were out of stock when I went to order), so I bit the bullet and ordered from Amazon directly, while the price is still $84. It arrived today, shipped out of Tennessee.
Being the optimist, I took the precautions to block software updates, and I'm thrilled to say that the FireTV I received has 5.1.1.0.1_user_510055620 installed on it.
So, if you think you've missed the boat on getting a rootable FireTV, as of yesterday, Amazon was still shipping units with the old firmware, so you might still be in luck.
Pardon me, I've got a FireTV to root... :victory:

Unfortunately as the whole support for german language and region was introduced in the new so far "unrootable" firmware i guess german customers won't be that lucky...
I'm getting my FTV from Amazon's $84 deal tomorrow, so hopefully it's still the rootable variety. I'm setting up OpenDNS with the assumption that it is, or that some smart person figures out how to root the version that I get...
Hey guys the new one I got today is also x. 620
I've looked thorough the guides but I am not sure what the next steps to root are. Would anyone want to tell me quickly what steps I need to do to root this baby?
In one of the guides it mentions that from this firmware I should let it update... I'm sure you can understand why that step makes me nervous.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Premium HD app
I don't suggest you let it update... Have you followed the guide to block OTA updates? Do that first, if you haven't already.
I started at the level you are on. I just rooted it following the guide here:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-root-the-amazon-fire-tv/
After you are done with that, install ClockWork Recovery by following this guide:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-install-clockworkmod-custom-recovery-on-the-amazon-fire-tv/
After that, you can update to a pre-rooted image, by following this guide:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-install-a-custom-rom-image-on-the-amazon-fire-tv/
That's the path I followed, and it worked out great.
Consider trying adbFire.
Windows, OS X & Linux
Root Amazon Fire TV
Extensive log produced after each run
Install ClockworkMod
Mount USB drives and sticks
Samba file sharing for /usb & /sdcard
Upgrade/Downgrade AFTV firmware
Install/Uninstall Apps
Busybox included
World-wide Llama functionality for XBMC
Checks online for program updates
Backup/Restore XBMC (and forks) data
File Management on Fire TV
Mount AFTV filesystem R/W
and more ...

I think its a cr***shoot. to be honest. I was able to pick up two units with that exact firmware, both routable, then got a third and it must have had a newer firmware on it because with the two addresses blocked it did not allow root. These boxes came from the same staples store by the way, so it just depends on stock available. You got lucky.
Thanks for the replies guys. I was using the initial setup guide and there is a step where it asks you to look at the update that it was trying to install on first boot. I read that piece wrong and thought it said if I was on the 6xxx update I should let it update when in fact it was showing an example of where someone on the 6xxx was being pushed the last rootable update.
Anyway long story short, I downloaded all of the apks to root, rooted and installed Xbox and xposed. Is there any real reason to install a custom recovery at the moment?

So you can back up your system also. I ended up messing one of mine up before I had a chance to install a recovery trying to get Link2SD to work properly. I learned the hard way that if you factory reset it doesn't matter if you have updates disabled and both update links blocked in your router it will still update to the newest version. Now one of my Fire TV's is unrootable and its on the newest software. Lesson learned on that. The other one is running a rooted version of the newest software thanks to rbox's awesome recovery program.
can someone post the update the sd slot on my phone stopped working after trying at least 3 microsd cards, i decided maybe if i flashed the older firmware it would start working again needless to say it didnt work and now my phone wont boot and everytime i try to flash a firmware i keep getting an error that says "sw rev check fail : {abort}fused 4 < binary 2" can someone help me out on this please
The good news is it is fixable, you just need the exact firmware you were using before (or newer.) It sets a version number in the bootloader and the firmware you downloaded has a lower version.
Unfortunately, I've been trying to find that same new firmware for 3 days now with no luck. (Keep reading though!) I'm trying to switch a tmo over to att, and since its going to be a work phone they insist it have the att firmware in 'official' mode - fortunately, they don't care what the paint on the back says.
If someone with that firmware posts the 'Firmware' page from Phone INFO ★Samsung★ I might be able to get it. (And if I do, I'll send it over - much more reliable than the official recovery method.)
You may have already lost everything on the phone, but I hope you were prepared for that. You might be able to fix the softbrick (resulting in it being 100% stock) with 'samsung smart switch' (win/mac) using 'emergency device recovery'. It will ask for your model number (SM-G935A) and serial # and then it will download and odin-flash the firmware for you.
I say 'might' because I tried that for the tmo phone last night and it eventually just crashed.
Forgive any weird disjointed text, it is early in the morning.. if some part of that didn't make sense let me know.

The firmware is available, but the source is questionable. As you discovered, ATT does not post their ROMs (just one more reason why they are THE Evil Empire).
Most are getting their files from a Persian site:
http://dl.pars-hamrah.com/ (switch to English)
And the G935A PI2 files are here:
http://dl.pars-hamrah.com/index.php...ATT4API2_USA ATT Android 6.0.1_4File Firmware
Premium fee is required for download and I have not looked into the cost. I have read that they are legit, but who knows...
Found it on clangsm.com as well, which is just as sketchy. I'll see what I can do, might have enough info with the filenames (and might not..)
Edit: Might just be too early in the morning (I'll try later tonight) but the info I need is definitely on that page from the phone info app. (I'm not doing anything magic, just trying a couple of apps.)
Alternately if someone wants to PM me an AT&T serial number (not the imei! always think REALLY hard about saying no if anyone asks for that!) I can see about listening in on the smart switch recovery.
It be great if you found it. Be nice to start from Sept firmware.

I'll text it to you later... Mine got buggered after the att update which I stupidly said yes to half asleep at 3am in the morning, the update does not play well with rooted phones, just hangs at the att logo and cooks the phone (got real hot real fast). I bought it last week after I melted my work phone.
Crap, i'll pm it it here, I lost your number with the melted phone.
Lol. Thanks! (Got it.)
I'll horribly abuse my w10 vm tonight and try to capture the info. If not he can get me the other info (and if all of that fails I might be out of ideas but we'll see.)

Missed this the first time through but you should be able to use Odin on the files posted above.

Confirmed worked flawlessly with Odin3 v3.12
My steps for updating and saving data/config:
0) Unfreeze all system apps
1) FlashFire backup to external SD card, make sure to backup /data and /internal storage along with /system in case you need to roll back.
2) Boot to Download, use Odin 3.12 (the unmodified version) to flash the 4 OE FW files
3) Let the phone fully boot, go through the basic setup, go to settings, enable USB/ADB debug and unknown sources
4) Reboot into Download, flash Eng bootloader with the PrinceComsy Odin
5) After phone reboots and starts, run root
6) "Enable SuperSU during boot"
7) Install FlashFire, grant root
8) Flash fixes/debloat, let the phone boot, reboot for good measure (I find that the extra reboot contributes to success)
9) After reboot, flash Xposed, etc.
10) FlashFire restore backup
11) After the phone boots, refreeze system apps
12) Profit.
OMG!
I can't even begin to thank you for sharing these files. I thought I was going to be without a phone for a little while. You are clutch!
Did Sammobile stop carrying USA firmware? It looks like there is no good way to download and manually update the firmware on any USA Samsung devices now.
I was looking for this firmware and had no luck, so I went and check a few other devices I have and NONE of them are on Sammobile anymore... WTF is going on. why would they pull all of the USA firmware off their site and not provide any news release about it.
Hello
Disclaimer - I know very little abourt rooting phones, ROMs, etc. Therefore please be gentle.
A few weeks ago I bought an Axon 7 (4gb - 128gb model) from Ali Express the Chinese ebay store. I took a punt as thew Axon 7 is impossible to get in the UK.
It became clear that is has been rooted in some way. It will not work with banking applications and Sky Q or SKY Go (and I really want these to work as I've just got Sky Q Installed).
Update: The MEGA cloud B13 download is currently on my SD card unzipped. When you do a system update check it flashes off and back to seetings i.e. not recognising the B13. Do you have to unzip first ? Or do I install from recoivery mode ?
Again all this is presuming it is safe !!
It presently stuck on Build no B07 (I understand that its now up to B13).
I'd like to return it to stock form and the latest build.
I've had a go at downloading B13 from MEGA cloud - link somewhere.
I cannot though seem to get this to copy from my Downloads to SD card - it just says A2017 is busy for some reason.
My questions therefore are:
(1) Is it safe to replace the current firmware - (at least partically rooted) with B13 in recovery mode ?
(2) If this is okay and will not risk bricking the phone does anyone have a link to the B013 build. I found a link but it kept failing all the time.
Any tips / help foer the novice phone usser would be appreciated.
Much appreciated.
Go to ROMS and kernels in XDA, then Axon 7 Factory Images/Full OTAs
And click on the link to download from mega. Download b13. Unzip and copy the update.zip file to the root of your sd. Then go to updates on your phone and follow it through.
Just done it on mine and it's a massive improvement. Especially on the camera.
Also, mine updated without wiping anything. Got Evie launcher on mine and it flies. I'm actually not regretting selling my s7 edge for the first time.
(I did the download and unzip on my PC and just copied the update.zip file to the sd)

...with regards to banking, following the update it now allows me to use my fingerprint to log into rbs where it didn't before because it said it was rooted. Paypal too. Don't know about other banking apps.
Hope this helps

One stupid question for this kind of update its necesary to have activated the developer mode activated??
You may need to unzip the B13 download. It may contain a separate zip inside titled 'update.zip' and the instructions. Flashing that update.zip should pass all verification checks during flashing in recovery.
Fantastic everything great, but see my question last night re password prompt. That really shocked me. But thanks to this forum. I'm good to go. Presume now I will receive OTA updates and therefore Android 7?
Will it now receive OTA updates?
Not sure. Waiting on the same thing but ZTE have delayed Nougat till sometime in Q1

Hello,
I bought a Verizon HTC 10 off Craigslist that was already updated to Nougat. I've tried to downgrade to 1.85.605.8 using the various threads describing how, but the flashing fails. Is there a way to downgrade after a Nougat update, or is the phone just locked into the new firmware now?
Thanks!
Well I feel like a guy arriving to the party a bit too late... I have been a happy HTC M8 owner for the last couple of years, and decided to jump up to the HTC 10... Googled "how to s-off and root HTC 10" got a plethora of results pointing to sunshine, and or one -click, so I bought the thing only to have it handed over to me with a fresh copy of 7.0 on it, which, I am now told makes my new toy pretty much useless as far as rooting. What a hoot. Those Verizon ppl give me gas.

Well znosko. I am clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed as of late, but if you are unable to downgrade, I think you and I at least, are stuck in the land of s-on. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Our "S" may indeed be stuck "on," but I am holding out hope someone can figure it out. Luckily, the phone itself is pretty cool, even without root. I suppose I can try to be happy with the NFL app being merely disabled instead of fully deleted.
Maybe find a way to get a replacement if you have insurance.... I just got an insurance replacement and it still had MM. I did have to downgrade .1 to root and s-off, but downgrading was extremely easy.

Got it taken care of. Phone that had previously updated OTA to Nougat was sent to jcase, who set it up with s-off and TWRP for a nominal fee. Sent it out Wednesday afternoon, got it back the following Monday afternoon. Installed santod040's Nougat ROM and I am rooted. Looks great, super happy, thanks to jcase!
