Unlock/root possible after Nougat update? - Verizon HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Hello,
I bought a Verizon HTC 10 off Craigslist that was already updated to Nougat. I've tried to downgrade to 1.85.605.8 using the various threads describing how, but the flashing fails. Is there a way to downgrade after a Nougat update, or is the phone just locked into the new firmware now?
Thanks!

Well I feel like a guy arriving to the party a bit too late... I have been a happy HTC M8 owner for the last couple of years, and decided to jump up to the HTC 10... Googled "how to s-off and root HTC 10" got a plethora of results pointing to sunshine, and or one -click, so I bought the thing only to have it handed over to me with a fresh copy of 7.0 on it, which, I am now told makes my new toy pretty much useless as far as rooting. What a hoot. Those Verizon ppl give me gas.

Well znosko. I am clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed as of late, but if you are unable to downgrade, I think you and I at least, are stuck in the land of s-on. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Our "S" may indeed be stuck "on," but I am holding out hope someone can figure it out. Luckily, the phone itself is pretty cool, even without root. I suppose I can try to be happy with the NFL app being merely disabled instead of fully deleted.

Maybe find a way to get a replacement if you have insurance.... I just got an insurance replacement and it still had MM. I did have to downgrade .1 to root and s-off, but downgrading was extremely easy.

Got it taken care of. Phone that had previously updated OTA to Nougat was sent to jcase, who set it up with s-off and TWRP for a nominal fee. Sent it out Wednesday afternoon, got it back the following Monday afternoon. Installed santod040's Nougat ROM and I am rooted. Looks great, super happy, thanks to jcase!

Would you believe my first VZW Note Pro 12.2 is arriving today? Yes I am late to the party but it's on FedEx truck for delivery now. This is my first Android tablet. You JUST made my day! Wow what timing!
Edit : I hope this is true. Source page gives a not found 404 error
Edit Edit: the URL had an error. Here it is again:

I am simply beside myself on the timing of this upgrade.

Did the upgrade this morning. Bit of a heart stop when it sat at the Verizon screen for about 5 minutes on the reboot, but then it finally brought up the updating apps screen.
Only problem I've found so far is that for some reason, it removed just about every one of my purchased apps. All the free ones were there, but had to go out to the store and re-download all those I had bought. Strange...
Verizon Messenging crashes for me, but if I uninstall the Verizon Messenging app update it will work. Other than that 5.1.1 working thus far.

How in the world did the Verizon version come out before the wifi?!?! Verizon is NEVER first... They are usually dead last! As with my note 4....still on 5.0.2 several months after the release of 5.1

Has anyone been able to root or keep root after updating?
Has anyone found where we can download the update from so I can flash it with Odin?

I too am awaiting confirmation on this before updating
I have the update.zip if it will help any devs with root or bootloader unlocking. It seems the update is a 2-parter, I have the the first update which according to the description "prepares your device for the 5.1.1 update." Please contact me if anyone can use it
Due to some new policies at work, Rooted devices weren't allowed to be connected to our E-mail, so I went ahead and took the plunge to 5.1.1 without worrying about rooting (gasp....did I just say that?). Anyhow, this thing feels like a new device. Much smoother, more responsive and it seems that the battery life is actually improved. IF Root does come along for the 5.1.1 update, I may root it and just use one of my other tablets for work, but I'm pleasantly surprised how well the NP runs at this point. Also...REALLY surprised that Verizon actually had the 5.1.1 update.

Hi - I just got my NP today delivered and got the new OTA update. Can you provide any of the root methods that previously worked for you on the P905v? You stated that your job doesnt allow the rooted device but I am wondering if this one can be rooted still any way? I want to run linux deploy on here to run Fedora or Ubuntu but always end up down a rabbit trail with this setup that I can never get out of
Thanks for any help!

I don't think there's a root yet for the Verizon variant, and I've not actively searched for one at this point. It was needed while the Tablet was on 4.4.2, but 5.1.1 gives me enough control not to worry about it too much right now. Before I used Towelroot, which will NOT work on the new version.

Thanks for the feedback!
I have a specific reason to root and thats to use linux deploy so I can have a fully functional Linux OS on my tablet which would be really ideal so I think the root is still required. What control did you gain in upgrading to 5.1.1 ? Linux deploy needs root and SELinux permissive, from what I can tell, to use a loopback device and install the Linux OS there so I think even if I did get root, I'd still need to custom compile a kernel and to that end, I am not too confident in possibly bricking my brand new tablet. For now I seem to be able to settle on a VNC session to a Linux VM I have on DigitalOcean
i'm totally excited that my NP will eventually be updated to 5.1.1 it's just i'm still completely confused on why my stock (no-carrier) branded NP is still on 5.0.1, when Big-Red carrier is rolling out 5.1.1 to their devices.
I think I can smell the money being transferred to Sammy for Bid-Red's propriety rollout.

I've actually noticed less bloatware, and apps that I couldn't disable before (which is why I rooted so I could get rid of them), I can disable now. I have a 128GB card in it loaded with Music, Books, Images, and on 4.4.2-the device would often F/C which it's no longer doing. I've also noticed that the micro-stutters as I call them, are gone. Everything is a lot smoother.

Trust me friend....I was just as surprised when my Verizon Tablet had the update. I read about it while at work and told my Team Lead that I MUST go home right now, work from home or something, but I gotta leave NOW.
Do I have to throw my Verizon SIM to get the update or can I just keep it on WiFi?

Mine came over Wifi but I've always had my Verizon SIM in. Not sure if there was a pre-check before downloading.
I'm upgrading my rooted tablet now using Kies (I figure the upgrade is worth risking losing root--but I'm not sure it'll work anyway since I outright deleted Knox). I'll let you know if TR works to re-root, or if I lose root in the first place.

Sprint finally rolling out Lollipop to Moto X owners

So I noticed this today https://community.sprint.com/baw/message/1017547#1017547
Of course, I had given up on this, and finally unlocked and rooted my phone a week ago. I gather than means I can't take an OTA update. Not sure I want it anyway, I'm happy with the stability of the native ROM. AdAway and tethering were the only things I needed and I've got those now.
Any one get this update yet? I just booted up several sprint moto x that I haven't used in a while and got an update to 4.4.4 that I should have gotten a long time ago, but, no 5.1 (the phones no longer have active service) might that be an issue in getting an OTA? Just wanted to upgrade to lollipop before I sold them...
Anyone seen this yet?
Sprint probably started rolling it out before everyone else, it's just that their network is so slow that no one received the notification until after every other carrier had pushed out the update.
Please tell me someone got the OTA
Anything yet? Anyone? 20 days since "release" and nothing?
I'm hard pressed to believe no one has got the update yet. I swear this starting going out on the 5th of Nov. A poster on Reddit said the release window was until the 7th of Dec daaaannnngggg, I'm still impatiently waiting lol
https://community.sprint.com/baw/message/1017547
Shows the 10th of Dec on the update announcement, so after the 10th, when you click system update should def be there? Maybe soon...lol

Just a few days away from December 10th, and I haven't gotten the update yet. Is there any way to force it to show up? Does anyone have the firmware that I could flash myself?
I think by now its safe to say, it won't be all rolled out by the 10th. It has to be a problem with the update.

Sprint will just pass the buck to Motorola and we will go around in circles! Sprint and Motorola need to learn how to communicate with their customers.

Some good news. 2 people on the Sprint Moto X message board just reported getting the update notification this afternoon. So there is hope yet.
Update - just checked and got the update notification! It has arrived! Will install when I get home.
Yes, all my phones are stock, locked bootloader and unrooted. Installing it on one of the three moto x's in the household.

I checked for updates and it was there! Finally official 5.1 lollipop!
Great news: I just got the notification for the update! Now I just need someone to upload the firmware, so I can do a "clean install" using RSD.
First post! Also got the notification, so I came on here to tell everyone! I checked here earlier today and people were being all pessimistic. I can't believe this is finally happening! Sprint just got almost all their points back. Almost... Better late than never. And at least Motorola and Sprint stuck with it till the bitter end.
It's out today!!!! Saw a couple people on Reddit post pics, so it's finally here
updated and it takes forever to finish but it does Enjoy it folks, we're the last of a dying breed
Does the Sprint update Lock the Sim again? Like the sprint 4.4.4 5mb security update did?

System Update today. Question!

I got my phone today, had to change delivery date because I wasn't home on the 12th. There was a system update that improves call quality or something. So, big question. Did anyone who installed stock Moto firmware without the Amazon bloat still get the update? If so, what was the outcome? Thanks. :good:

I haven't been able to receive the update. Tried searching both when my bootloader was locked running Amazon bloat OS, and unlocked running almost-stock OS.
I imagine it's going to trickle out over time. Previous OTA's have done that. Also, I went ahead and signed up for Motorola's feedback program. I was a soak on tester on two previous phones and hopefully I'll get chosen on this one. Being on the odd roms doesn't matter according to the Motorola engineer I talked to. He said they also push the soaks out to the Consumer Cellular, Straight Talk, etc specific roms just like they do for all Moto roms since they need to be tested like any other rom. A buddy of mine actually got a Consumer Cellular soak rom on his AT&T phone while soak testing.

I flashed my to stock oem, no update yet.
Thanks for the responses. I haven't done anything to my phone yet....wanted to be certain of some things first lol. Honestly, the amazon ads aren't bothering me like I thought they would. It's a great phone. I'm liking it. But I've had my nexus 5 for a long time, so almost anything is better haha. The quick charge 3.0 is awesome. I am just wondering if the Amazon bloat or ads do hinder the battery life?

Sorry for the noob question. Does getting an OTA depend on a sim being in the phone or not? My amazon moto g4 is a secondary phone and mostly just on wifi.

Have you been on the Motorola forums? There's a big thread over there the mods are working on about that. Motorola says they're supposed to work and Verizon says the G4 isn't approved yet. I haven't followed it completely but I thought I saw where some people got their phone activated and some still couldn't.

G935U Nougat

Hi All,
I'm a little confused as to where us U firmware users stand with Nougat. I've seen differing reports of what the known plan is with this. I believe some are saying we're waiting for Verizon to release it to the 935u, otherwise I'm reading that we're on a quarterly update schedule and won't be seeing anything until April.
I bought my 935V from VZW and flashed over to unrooted U firmware - actually by using the normal flash method and then doing a firmware restore from verizon's utility to get full unroot. Not exactly a typical method, but it gave me peace of mind knowing everything is completely stock U.
Everything is running great so I'm not in urgent need of an update for any reason, but would like to see some new features.
Lemme know if anyone has any clues here as for what to expect. Thanks in advance!
Not exactly sure what you mean by going full "unroot".. unless you ment, you wanted the U firmware for a smoother "root" can you please clarify bubby?

Good to know. Thanks.
I had to root in order to flash U FW, but the root process we have for GS7 is really process heavy and battery draining. I wanted an unrooted version of the U firmware with no bullsh*t and good battery life so I unrooted and restored using the software tool.

Ah Gotcha, sorry I misunderstood the op. Maybe give the T or V carrier FW a spin till U gets released? I haven't upgraded yet but am tempted. Been using stang 5.0 rom and been pretty impressed. I'd say I would recommend it even with the faults of the eng boot.
I also believe I seen a "no root no bull**** playstore Nougat rom" by jkruse, or something to that effect. If that's something your into
Lots of cry babies over in the Samsung forums. I can see why everyone is so upset but Samsung never promised faster updates for unlocked variants over carrier models. I'm content waiting at least until April for the nougat release of the 935u. Screw Verizon bloat. It's not worth putting up with it for Nougat.
There are some articles with Samsung's new commitment for monthly security updates on unlocked devices. This should mean that the 935U will get Nougat this month with March security update.

Yes i have the original UDP and the tethering option works. How ever i cant get the verizon video calling to work??
So from what I'm getting, to install (if I'm on Verizon Nougat), flash Unlocked 6.0 first, then smart switch to 7.0? Also, I read that someone had been having issues with using LTE while in a phone call, can anyone confirm? And what happened to all the other fix files, since I remember the first time flashing the unlocked software required more subsequent flashes as well.

Important question about root Latest update.

I want to switch back from my S7 to the V20. I had the V20 before, rooted.
Question is, is the t mobile v20 still root-able Today? If I went and used my jump on demand. ??? (I keep reading conflicting reports, about being patched recently).
