I missed out on buying from Staples for $74 the other day (they were out of stock when I went to order), so I bit the bullet and ordered from Amazon directly, while the price is still $84. It arrived today, shipped out of Tennessee.
Being the optimist, I took the precautions to block software updates, and I'm thrilled to say that the FireTV I received has 5.1.1.0.1_user_510055620 installed on it.
So, if you think you've missed the boat on getting a rootable FireTV, as of yesterday, Amazon was still shipping units with the old firmware, so you might still be in luck.
Pardon me, I've got a FireTV to root... :victory:

Unfortunately as the whole support for german language and region was introduced in the new so far "unrootable" firmware i guess german customers won't be that lucky...
I'm getting my FTV from Amazon's $84 deal tomorrow, so hopefully it's still the rootable variety. I'm setting up OpenDNS with the assumption that it is, or that some smart person figures out how to root the version that I get...
Hey guys the new one I got today is also x. 620
I've looked thorough the guides but I am not sure what the next steps to root are. Would anyone want to tell me quickly what steps I need to do to root this baby?
In one of the guides it mentions that from this firmware I should let it update... I'm sure you can understand why that step makes me nervous.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Premium HD app
I don't suggest you let it update... Have you followed the guide to block OTA updates? Do that first, if you haven't already.
I started at the level you are on. I just rooted it following the guide here:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-root-the-amazon-fire-tv/
After you are done with that, install ClockWork Recovery by following this guide:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-install-clockworkmod-custom-recovery-on-the-amazon-fire-tv/
After that, you can update to a pre-rooted image, by following this guide:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-install-a-custom-rom-image-on-the-amazon-fire-tv/
That's the path I followed, and it worked out great.
Consider trying adbFire.
Windows, OS X & Linux
Root Amazon Fire TV
Extensive log produced after each run
Install ClockworkMod
Mount USB drives and sticks
Samba file sharing for /usb & /sdcard
Upgrade/Downgrade AFTV firmware
Install/Uninstall Apps
Busybox included
World-wide Llama functionality for XBMC
Checks online for program updates
Backup/Restore XBMC (and forks) data
File Management on Fire TV
Mount AFTV filesystem R/W
and more ...

I think its a cr***shoot. to be honest. I was able to pick up two units with that exact firmware, both routable, then got a third and it must have had a newer firmware on it because with the two addresses blocked it did not allow root. These boxes came from the same staples store by the way, so it just depends on stock available. You got lucky.
Thanks for the replies guys. I was using the initial setup guide and there is a step where it asks you to look at the update that it was trying to install on first boot. I read that piece wrong and thought it said if I was on the 6xxx update I should let it update when in fact it was showing an example of where someone on the 6xxx was being pushed the last rootable update.
Anyway long story short, I downloaded all of the apks to root, rooted and installed Xbox and xposed. Is there any real reason to install a custom recovery at the moment?

So you can back up your system also. I ended up messing one of mine up before I had a chance to install a recovery trying to get Link2SD to work properly. I learned the hard way that if you factory reset it doesn't matter if you have updates disabled and both update links blocked in your router it will still update to the newest version. Now one of my Fire TV's is unrootable and its on the newest software. Lesson learned on that. The other one is running a rooted version of the newest software thanks to rbox's awesome recovery program.

Amazon has updated their Fire TV Source Code page with a new software package: version 51.1.3.0_user_513011520
I haven't heard of anyone receiving this version in an OTA update yet, but I figured I'd let everyone know to keep an eye out and get the discussion going for the inevitable rollout.
Anyone already stuck without root would probably get that update since they are stuck.
They have no choice anyway unless they still use one of blocking methods.
We might need at least one person to stay on the first unrootable version in case rbox or anyone else could find a new exploit or something.
I wonder, what has changed in this new update anyway?
Edit:Amazon, listen to the users of Fire TV and add support for USB Media Storage.
It probably had a negative effect on sales, especially since the blocked root access which was the only way they could access USB media storage using stickmount.

so native enabled usb storage with the update? we need to get that aspect without updating for us rooted users. im kinda tired of the stick mount method. it would be nice to not need it
So this tarball is smaller than the previous, but I can see no difference in it. Quite strange...

I don't think there was any doubt they would eventually add it. Ouya did the same thing. Originally yhey said it was over security concerns they needed to work out.

Damn it!!! I just lost my root. I totally forgot to disable auto update on my Fire TV cuz was enjoying it all customized to my liking. Totally forgot to hack auto update feature. This sucks!!! :crying: It just happend about 10 min ago. Came back to tv and saw that amazon home screen was on screensaver. Knew that I had left Fire TV on xbmc. Went right to settings to see if box had been updated, and sure enough it was 51.1.3.0_user_513011520. So bummned out ritht now. I have another box that is disabled for auto updates, but this one is back to stock features. XBMC still works, just all root access apps are no longer working. Have to wait for root access to arrive again...Help Geohot!!! We need you!!! Yeah...this sucks.

And I'm assuming you actually tried all the root methods and didn't just assume it wasn't going to work? I know the reports were that 51.1.2.0 didn't allow root, but unless they are lying about their source dump, I see no evidence that they patched the kernel vulnerability.

I've read that v2 of towelroot does not work on the Fire TV. I personally have not tried v2. I've used both v1 and v3 of towelroot successfully root on 51.1.1.0_user_511070220 and older.
One of my Fire TV's just got the update notification. Unfortunately it's my primary device, so I blocked the update. I'll be trying to get the update on a Fire TV that I don't mind losing root on. WIll report back shortly.

Just a bit of clarification as the first mention of USB wasn't clear to me the later posts assumed USB is enabled in this version. Can anyone actually confirm that they have a USB drive working on this latest firmware version?
I just checked for updates and my FireTV is still on 51.1.1.0_user_511070220 with no new updates found. It never updated to the 51.1.2.0 version, was never rooted, updates are not blocked, at least not intentionally.

When you say older, do you mean older as in update 51.1.2.0_user_512073320. Cuz update 51.1.3.0_user_513011520 is not able to root with towelroot v3. Wishful thinking on my part thinking it will work.
I have rooted 3 Fire TV's. All 3 came with software 51.1.0_user_510047320 and I updated all to 51.1.2.0_user_512073320. I rooted all with towelroot v3. Towelroot v3 no longer worked after update 51.1.3.0_user_513011520. That's the first thing I tested after auto update happened. Towelroot v3 state's "This phone isn't currently supported". So no "rain" for me I'll try to find v1 or v2 of towelroot and see what happens.
---------- Post added at 01:38 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:03 AM ----------
Well that was quick...and painful. Towelroot v1, v2, and v3 are now confirmed by me, to not be able to root Amazon Fire TV.
O'well, I tried.
v1 just halts but was able to press back button and get out. v2 and v3 both say "This phone isn't currently supported". Good thing I have a spare Fire TV
In all honesty, as long as XBMC still runs on Amazon Fire TV, this shouldn't be such a total loss.
But when you get your settings and your customization just right, and then its all gone, it really hurts...a lot.
Just got to wait now till further updates on root for this last Fire TV update.
Just a FYI. My first 2 Fire Tv's came from Amazon. 3rd one was from Best Buy. All came with Amazon's 1st firmware put out for this box 51.1.0_user_510047320.
I was expecting latest update when ordered from Amazon for sure. That was weird.
Heads up Everyone. Don't forget to disable OTA update for Amazon Fire TV so you can keep Root Access.
Silly me forgot to follow this big rule.:silly:
I was able to manually install v51.1.3.0_user_513011520 onto a rooted Fire TV that had not received this update.
I can confirm that towelroot v1, v2, and v3 all CAN NOT root the Fire TV running v51.1.3.0_user_513011520. Towelroot v3 reports that the 'phone' is not compatible, while v1 and v2 just sit there frozen when you press "make it rain".
I'm currently going through to determine what has changed with this new update. Please list anything you'd like me to check.
Thanks for checking into this update.

Preliminary examination shows that the main bootloader hasn't changed, but the sbl1/2/3 and the rpm images have changed. The image was built on September 5th. It looks like they added german to the recovery. Not sure how it decides german vs english, probably means there is a difference between the english and german versions.

That's a big NO. XBMC does not detect any external storage. I don't think Amazon will give end users this feature.
Only root access will allow this. Hoped might just work, but only way this would work is with root access.
Wishful thinking Amazon will add this feature.
A "no go" for external storage on latest update 51.1.3.0_user_513011520.
Hate being the one know this first hand.

Is sideloading still working with this firmware? Without XBMC, this box would be useless for most people.

Amazon has posted the source code for version 51.1.3.0_user_513011820 on their US source code page. So far, I've only heard of German Fire TVs receiving this update, so it's a bit odd for it to be posted on the US source code page but not on the German source code page.
I was thinking this version wouldn't get pushed to the US, but I may be wrong. My guess is it's an insignificant update from the previous version, 51.1.3.0_user_513011520, but it's always good to be aware of it and see if anyone gets it.

Yeah, they started pushing it around that time. But it wasn't a widespread deployment.
I've combed through the interface and all the menus and haven't found a single difference between 51.1.3.0_user_513011520 and this new version, 51.1.3.0_user_513011820. Seems like whatever this update brings is completely behind the scenes.

Version 51.1.3.0 added support for UK Amazon acounts so it is very unlikely that UK Fire TVs will arrive with a software version older than 51.1.3.0. In other words, it is very unlikely UK Fire TVs will be rootable at this time. Like rbox said, theres no way to know what the future will bring as far as new roots.

Thank you for the info, I guess I could simply hold on to it and see what the future holds especially since I got it at the disscount price of £49.
I got this version pushed OTA sucks because I had root and didn't know had to disable OTAs but on the other hand I noticed this update lets you enable install apps from unknown sources so can we still get play store if I push the necessary files to the fire and I can install through ES File explorer????
No, play store won't work correctly without xposed. Xposed needs root.
With 5.1.1, many other changes also coming to tablet. Like, Reactivation Lock, Download booster, etc. and Stagefright fix ofc.

Did the upgrade this morning. Bit of a heart stop when it sat at the Verizon screen for about 5 minutes on the reboot, but then it finally brought up the updating apps screen.
Only problem I've found so far is that for some reason, it removed just about every one of my purchased apps. All the free ones were there, but had to go out to the store and re-download all those I had bought. Strange...
Verizon Messenging crashes for me, but if I uninstall the Verizon Messenging app update it will work. Other than that 5.1.1 working thus far.

I too am awaiting confirmation on this before updating
I have the update.zip if it will help any devs with root or bootloader unlocking. It seems the update is a 2-parter, I have the the first update which according to the description "prepares your device for the 5.1.1 update." Please contact me if anyone can use it
Due to some new policies at work, Rooted devices weren't allowed to be connected to our E-mail, so I went ahead and took the plunge to 5.1.1 without worrying about rooting (gasp....did I just say that?). Anyhow, this thing feels like a new device. Much smoother, more responsive and it seems that the battery life is actually improved. IF Root does come along for the 5.1.1 update, I may root it and just use one of my other tablets for work, but I'm pleasantly surprised how well the NP runs at this point. Also...REALLY surprised that Verizon actually had the 5.1.1 update.

I don't think there's a root yet for the Verizon variant, and I've not actively searched for one at this point. It was needed while the Tablet was on 4.4.2, but 5.1.1 gives me enough control not to worry about it too much right now. Before I used Towelroot, which will NOT work on the new version.

I don't think there's a root yet for the Verizon variant, and I've not actively searched for one at this point. It was needed while the Tablet was on 4.4.2, but 5.1.1 gives me enough control not to worry about it too much right now. Before I used Towelroot, which will NOT work on the new version.

Thanks for the feedback!
I have a specific reason to root and thats to use linux deploy so I can have a fully functional Linux OS on my tablet which would be really ideal so I think the root is still required. What control did you gain in upgrading to 5.1.1 ? Linux deploy needs root and SELinux permissive, from what I can tell, to use a loopback device and install the Linux OS there so I think even if I did get root, I'd still need to custom compile a kernel and to that end, I am not too confident in possibly bricking my brand new tablet. For now I seem to be able to settle on a VNC session to a Linux VM I have on DigitalOcean
i'm totally excited that my NP will eventually be updated to 5.1.1 it's just i'm still completely confused on why my stock (no-carrier) branded NP is still on 5.0.1, when Big-Red carrier is rolling out 5.1.1 to their devices.
I think I can smell the money being transferred to Sammy for Bid-Red's propriety rollout.

I've actually noticed less bloatware, and apps that I couldn't disable before (which is why I rooted so I could get rid of them), I can disable now. I have a 128GB card in it loaded with Music, Books, Images, and on 4.4.2-the device would often F/C which it's no longer doing. I've also noticed that the micro-stutters as I call them, are gone. Everything is a lot smoother.

Trust me friend....I was just as surprised when my Verizon Tablet had the update. I read about it while at work and told my Team Lead that I MUST go home right now, work from home or something, but I gotta leave NOW.
Do I have to throw my Verizon SIM to get the update or can I just keep it on WiFi?

Mine came over Wifi but I've always had my Verizon SIM in. Not sure if there was a pre-check before downloading.
I'm upgrading my rooted tablet now using Kies (I figure the upgrade is worth risking losing root--but I'm not sure it'll work anyway since I outright deleted Knox). I'll let you know if TR works to re-root, or if I lose root in the first place.

dot dot dot ... apparently I didn't read the threads above I'm upgrading regardless.
Just got my OTA for the Verizon update. Given the success in the P-605 thread with achieving root post install, I'm taking the update and will report back.
Here's some more info - http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/samsung-galaxy-note-10-2014-update/
Ran into an install error (the infamous error 402), so having to use Verizon's Software Updater to try to get it to install.
Can you root after install?

Can't get installed. It is a 2 step update and I got a 402 error on the 2nd update. Thought from searching that I could use the built in Verizon Software Update utility but getting an incompatible Firmware error from it. The new versions aren't up on Kies yet and trying to Odin back to the previous is erroring out (though trying once more now).
So at this point I'm stuck until they release the latest through Kies or I find a chunk of time to get on the phone with Verizon tech support.
i get an error also. i even factory reset my device to see if itll go through and still a no. "Update failed, 402"

What a useless ***** on the chat. she's so stupid i don't understand how she got a job at support.
Unfortunately I suspect we are stuck until they either update the Verizon Update app to recognize the new firmware versions or Samsung releases it through Kids..... I don't remember what the normal delay is between OTA and Kies but suspect it will be a week or so.

I don't know, my 14 great old can be pretty sharp I even caught that the first time spell check "corrected" it, guess it decided even after two times I still didn't want to spell it Kies....
So here is the latest. After chatting with a helpful Verizon rep, they said that due to the device having been previously rooted (even though I had uninstalled root prior to updating) that might be causing the issue and that I'd have to talk with Samsung. The Samsung rep said that yes, the reported baseband is 5.1.1 so that is likely causing the issue that it took the 1st OTA but not the second. Unfortunately they can't update it through Smart Switch (their Kies replacement) and said I'd have to take it into a Samsung service center in a Best Buy since they'd have the tools to get it on the right firmware. Heading there today or tomorrow so will report back.....
i went to bestbuy and the samsung guy tried to be very helpful but he couldn't, his programs dont show an update for our devices yet. He wouldnt believe me when i told him im suppose to get 5.1.1. Note pro 12 doesnt have 5.1 theres no way note 10.1 is getting it is what he told me.
Then i inserted my phones sim into the note 10.1 and we checked for an update, he saw the error and he saw that there was an update 5.1.1 available for download. We tryed to update it again but it also failed.
So i went home after spending 1 hour at bestbuy without success.
The tech I met with ran a diagnostic and identified that I had a "binary mismatch" which requires 2 hours to fully reflash the device. He unfortunately didn't know how to do it so I have to go back when the more experienced tech is working.
I think we are all in the same boat. I received and installed the first OTA update, then the second one failed with the 402 error. I tried Kies and it states that I have the latest firmware. The 402 error seems common with Verizon OTA updates. I may try a trip to Best Buy also, but I don't think that the update is in full effect yet. One positive for me, the tablet seems a bit better after the first OTA received yesterday.
I was told once they get the update on their computers they can push it to any device. Hopefully thats the case.
I wonder if we can odin back to the previous version we had. If it works it'll be all stock without any root history. Maybe it'll work that way.
Just thinking out loud

Tried Odin with 4.4.2 but ran into the same binary mismatch. Assumed it was from a changed bootloader, but not technical enough to know.
Likewise think that might be a path forward once they publish the firmware, but no sign of it yet (I know it normally takes a week or so to see it show up on SamMobile)
How did you root? Has anyone had success with this? Is your tablet still usable?

I got the update. It was available through Kies this morning. Installed without any problems.

Haven't yet. After the headaches of getting it installed may take a breather before rooting. Here's a good summary from the P605 thread (obviously skipping the first couple of flashes and starting with the permissive kernel flashing) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...xy-note-10-t3215876/post63187053#post63187053

My bad...my question was how did you root before the update? With towelroot? Does that make a difference or was it just a bad update from vzw?
Sent from my SM-P605V using Tapatalk
Mine was rooted with towelroot. The first update wiped out root. The OTA error for the second update can happened whether you are rooted or not.
I got my phone today, had to change delivery date because I wasn't home on the 12th. There was a system update that improves call quality or something. So, big question. Did anyone who installed stock Moto firmware without the Amazon bloat still get the update? If so, what was the outcome? Thanks. :good:

I got it (and did it because I know better, but wanted the improved call quality...).
Anyway...

Yeah, U.S. user here. Got it. Wasn't lying Thanks for the screenshot yo.
Thanks...It looks like the build and kernel changed but the baseband remained the same. I'll be curious to see if anyone that flashed over the original Amazon rom gets it.

I haven't been able to receive the update. Tried searching both when my bootloader was locked running Amazon bloat OS, and unlocked running almost-stock OS.
I imagine it's going to trickle out over time. Previous OTA's have done that. Also, I went ahead and signed up for Motorola's feedback program. I was a soak on tester on two previous phones and hopefully I'll get chosen on this one. Being on the odd roms doesn't matter according to the Motorola engineer I talked to. He said they also push the soaks out to the Consumer Cellular, Straight Talk, etc specific roms just like they do for all Moto roms since they need to be tested like any other rom. A buddy of mine actually got a Consumer Cellular soak rom on his AT&T phone while soak testing.

I flashed my to stock oem, no update yet.
Thanks for the responses. I haven't done anything to my phone yet....wanted to be certain of some things first lol. Honestly, the amazon ads aren't bothering me like I thought they would. It's a great phone. I'm liking it. But I've had my nexus 5 for a long time, so almost anything is better haha. The quick charge 3.0 is awesome. I am just wondering if the Amazon bloat or ads do hinder the battery life?

Sorry for the noob question. Does getting an OTA depend on a sim being in the phone or not? My amazon moto g4 is a secondary phone and mostly just on wifi.

Not that noob of a question. I never thought about it that much but I would think no, it doesn't have to be in.

Rootjunky is working on a script to flash back to the Amazon firmware using the oem.img from my Amazon Moto G4

He says that you'll need an unlocked bootloader to flash the oem.img but after you flash it you will be able to take ota updates.

Have you been on the Motorola forums? There's a big thread over there the mods are working on about that. Motorola says they're supposed to work and Verizon says the G4 isn't approved yet. I haven't followed it completely but I thought I saw where some people got their phone activated and some still couldn't.

read post 3 it will be help full http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4/development/moto-g-4th-gen-how-to-remove-amazon-t3416587
Another probably noob question: it says the update cannot be removed. I allowed Samsung to update my note 2 and then couldn't ever get it to go back. I don't want Lenovo/Amazon to pull the same fast one on me.

If I'm reading your question right then no it cant be removed but you can flash the full rom and go back.
