Absolutely brilliant news (as far as I'm concerned).
Thanks to fellow member wu5262 for looking after his software so well and keeping it, he e-mailed anyone needing the file in question 'WM5torage'.
See attachment for upload.
This bit of software literally turns the Athena (as well as most other WM5 devices) into a mass storage device allowing one to transfer files directly to your SD card or Micro drive, as it will be recognized as a Drive on your PC.
It simply works wonderfully and completely eliminates the need to use the slow and unreliable ActiveSync application to simply move files from the PC to the device.
I was having problems moving large files in this manner via Activesync (AS) to the Micro Drive (MD) and AS would not cope with it on my Ameo but it works fine on the Dopod U1000, implying that the ROM on the Dopod variant is considerably better put together than others. Wu has had no major problems with his device since he got it.
I can now report that I have no issues with the UK version of the Ameo whatsoever!!
Using WM5torage, one can very easily transfer huge files directly to the MD. I just moved 2.4 GB of movies (3 DVD rips - my own legal copies ) in about 12 minutes!!
So no problems with the MD speed in this regard. I've also tested the movies and there is no corruption..everything works flawlessly!
Instructions on how to do it:
1) Download the attached WM5torage.cab...either directly to your device or any other way you want.
2) Install the cab to 'Device' and softe reset straight after.
3) Now to find the file;
Go to...My Device\Program Files\WM5torage.....there it is!
Good time to make a shortcut and place it somewhere more logical!
4) Copy the file from the folder and go to....My Device\Windows\Start Menu\....
Now click the menu button...bottom right corner of the screen...and select 'edit' ...then paste shortcut...rename the file 'WM5torage' (otherwise it will always say "shrtcut to WM5torage") that's it...we're good to go!
5) Finally return to the start menu and you should see it there...WM5torage!!
Connect your USB lead to PC & Ameo/Athena. Don't worry if Active sync says error or even connects...just shut down any pop-up messages or Active sync.
6) On your device under your start menu, Simply click WM5torage (it will say 'Inactive' - hence the reason why nothing happens when you plug your USB lead into the device and PC)...and select Activate.
Immediately your PC should start to recognize your USB mass storage device....be patient and then a window will show up as if you had plugged in a USB device or inserted a memory card into your PC.
You can check what device has now been recognized as a drive under 'My Computer' on your PC.....it'll say something like L:drive or similar depending on your PC's configuration.
Happy fast transferring.
Don't forget to 'Deactivate' WM5torage when your finished otherwise Active Sync might not recognize your device the next time you want to sync with your PC.
Let us know how you got on.
All thanks to wu5262...Cheers mate.

woah another long post mostly 99% garbage. Anyways all laptops come with built in card readers. my laptop has all mini-sd micro-sd sd every card reading capability. And thats much faster than athena's and activesync. lol this is so unneccessary because i never transfer files via USB... slow as hell. Always use internal ^^
Go and find something productive to do.

Glad it's all working out for you....I cannot be bothered to get into another argument with the likes of you.
This post was for those who recognise the problems mentioned above. I have now played with 3 brand new UK version Ameos and all suffer the same problem...so this was a solution for me and those who have the same experience...not twats like you.

Look, Nuclear, what is your problem? why you are saying his post is garbage? are you just unhappy because you haven't got your HTC Advantage? Well, mate you have to wait more so cool down.
So you are going to use card reader to transfer file? I would love to see how you can plug the Micro Drive in the Card Reader !!
Goodness me..I just realized you haven't even got your Athena yet...so you couldn't possibly understand why I posted this 99% garbage post.
Apply that remaining 1% to your existing 1% of intelligence...you'll need it for the Athena. Sorry for calling you names just now..din't know at the time that you were retarded.

you need to enable remote control on your pc, you need the IP as well. i personally have a static IP, so it's quite easy to set up. user name and password is the same on your pc.
I have to say this, if you haven't done remote control before, it might be quite hard to set it up.
I will try to post some screen shot later on.

Hi wu, I remember using the following Registry Settings on my Terminal Services and this was the only way I could get a reasonable speed on it.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client]
"BitmapPersistCacheSize"=dword:0000000A
"BitmapCacheSize"=dword:000005DC
"Keyboard Layout"="00000409"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default]
"BitmapCachePersistEnable"=dword:00000001
Also I definitely agree with you! Crossbow and WM5 Terminal Services are way too different! Crossbow is awesome for this!I hope this helps!

I have read, but i would know: is it possible obtain Pass-through Internet with an external apk? an simulation of this driver htc?
thanks
Doubt it, it's a HTC specific feature. It's likely the APK will need Sense specific libs that we can't 'port' as much. As for the simulation of the driver, again I doubt it'll be possible.

ok tnx for the help
Hi all. I was asked by a family friend to prepare a tablet for use by a person who is confined to a hospital bed. He has limited mobility, I think only one side of his body. Additionally, he is very old, so I imagine his eyesight is poor. I have not met with him yet, so I don't know all of the details, but I'm trying to prepare myself with some knowledge about what I can do when I meet him.
So, here I am asking for suggestions. I have a plan for mounting the iconia, so I'm good there; what I need is software suggestions for programs that he can use. His interests are:
1) web browsing
2) email
3) writing
The other thing I need help with is finding programs that will make the iconia easier to use generally: larger text, brighter icons, ?
For web browsing, I think Dolphin for Pad will be best, but I'll install opera too, just to see which he likes. Anyone know if there is a browser that would be particularly easy to use? Also, I don't know what news sources will be best, but as far as I can tell, the CNN app is the best for the tablet (even though I detest CNN. The NYtimes app has tiny text and is not fun to navigate...)
For email I think the default email client will work. If he uses gmail, I'll do that, if he has more than one I'll aggregate them in the gmail client. If he's stuck to hotmail (he's old...) I'll use the regular email client unless someone has a better suggestion.
For writing I have Docs to Go full and Quickoffice Pro. I also have the Flex T9 keyboard. Anyone have better suggestions? \
Thanks all in advance! I know this is going to be a challenge: I don't think he's ever even used a tablet, so the learning curve here will be steep. If this doesn't work, we may try an iPad (gasp!) just because it's harder to **** up, but I'd prefer to stick to the android so I can provide remote support (I'm keeping my galaxy 10.1!)
You've got yourself quite a hard task ahead of you. Mostly because there are almost no accessibility functions or applications available for Android devices at all. And you say that he's physically disabled, possibly not being able to use the other side of his body... so, how's he going to hold the tablet up and use it at the same time?
I personally feel a regular laptop would be a better choice. Sure, it's heavier, but there's far far more software for accessibility uses and it can easily be used even one-handed.
you can also try the w500. windows contains a lot of disabled functions.
Thanks for the two suggestions. In my original post I omitted the part about it being mounted above his head (the post was getting pretty long). He will not have to hold it, nor could he. We have already determined that a laptop will not work. I already have the iconia, and I'd like to try to make it work. Again, thanks for the suggestions, but what I'm really looking for is software for android or settings withing android that will make this work.

Android simply was not designed with accessibility in mind.. :/
Bump. I know that some of you have some real ideas, not just naysaying. I didn't mention before that I'm not rooted but would be happy to root if there would be any advantages...
(please - no more discouraging responses. I have some ideas on how to do this, and it will probably work, I'm just looking for other ideas that maybe I hadn't considered yet).

You are sooooooo wrong.
Many Android users have disabilities that require them to interact with their Android devices in different ways. These include users who have visual, physical or age-related disabilities that prevent them from fully using or seeing a touchscreen.
Android provides an accessibility layer that helps these users navigate their Android-powered devices more easily. Android's accessibility services provide things like text-to-speech, haptic feedback, and trackball/d-pad navigation that augment the user experience.
Your application should follow the guidelines in this document to ensure that it provides a good experience for users with disabilities. Following these two basic rules will solve most access-related problems:
Make all of your user interface controls accessible with a trackball or directional controller (d-pad).
Label your ImageButton, EditText, and other input widgets using the android:contentDescription attribute.

Can anyone confirm that this will make the screen icons larger? I don't think he's blind to the point where talkback will be useful, but I do think that larger type/icons would definitely be a positive. I have a few cheap soft-tip styluses; is there a real difference between them? I will get one of the $20 ones if that will really make it easier to use.
Also, looks like I need to root this thing. I'm comfortable with that; I have rooted more than a few gizmos in my life; anyone have a suggestion for a good ROM (or anything else root related specific to my question)?
Wtf?

Hey guys, WereCatf is pretty good as far as helping people out around here. I understand how she sees the current accessibility options. They are pretty weak at this stage. For instance, if someone wanted to change their font size globally, without root and slack04's spiffy trick they would have quite a time. There are no contrast controls that I know of in the accessibility options, or anywhere else. That seems to me that it would be included for the visually impared if much thought had gone into it at all. There looks to be a huge absence of apps for the disabled. Ripe and waiting for some developer to tap into.
Maybe you fellas should consider taking a look around at some of her posts. Perhaps you might rethink the comments.
To All Windows 7 and Vista Users:
We have found a serious bug in Windows 7 and Vista that can effect system function and
performance. The Bug appeared when running Root MANY ANDROID! and Qemu but can
cause a number of programs to fail. Please perform these steps to fix the problem. If you
are currently Rooted, do not worry about Re-Rooting, just perform the fix.
Here is the Fix:
1. Go into System, here is how. If you have My Computer or Computer, Right Hand mouse
click choose Properties. If you can not find it here, click on Start Menu, do you see
Computer, Right Hand mouse click choose Properties. If not here, choose Control Panel,
select Small Icons at the top Right. Then select (click) on the System Icon.
2. Once you are in the System Properties, choose "Advanced System Settings"
3. Next Select "Environment Variables"
4. Under "System Variables" find "Path"
5. With the Mouse, select "Path" Choose Edit
6. Be Careful. Scroll to the end of the Path Statement and add: C:\Windows\System32 so the path statement looks like (example only, yours will be different):
C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem;C:\WINDOWS\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Users\Gerry Bryant\AppData\Local\Smartbar\Application\;C:\Users\Gerry Bryant\AppData\Local\Smartbar\Application\;c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\;c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DTS\Binn\;c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\ManagementStudio\;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\WINDOWS\system32
Note: No Space between the ; and the statement C:\WINDOWS\system32 - the statement
is not case sensitive, can be upper case or lower case or a mix of the two.
7. Click on OK, OK and OK until the System Properties is closed.
8. Let's test to see if the Path statement was set properly. Open a Command Window
by clicking on Start > Run > cmd OK or however you know how to open a Command
Window.
9. Once a Command Window is open type:
Code:
ping 4.2.2.2
You should see replies, your output ms= time will vary, just make sure you see a response
and nothing like "not recognized as an internal or external command in Windows". The
output will appear something like:

meddle70,
No, just fix the issue if it is present on your system. If you never performed Windows Updates:crying:,
then you may not have the problem. When Service Pack 1 was released, the had a Bug in the service
pack that removed the Path Statement. It was fixed in prior service packs but we are finding a high
number of people did not keep there PC Patched. Just go into the Path Statement, see if you find
C:\Windows\System32 in the path. Or drop to command and type:
Code:
path
Do you see C:\Windows\System32 somewhere in the Path Statement?
Current Kindle Fire HD and 2 - Root Sucess
To All-
Everyone who is already Rooted needs to perform the fix although you will not have to perform the Root
Steps againn. This fix is designed to repair a Post Service Pack Bug, that has caused many people
headaches when running ADB. Some people believe that upgrading Java is the solution, indirectly it
is a solution, since the latest version of Java detects the missing Path Statement. Then the Java
installer adds the missing Path Statement of C:\Windows\System32.
Either way, it is important to make sure the Path Statement exists, if it does not, add it per the
instructions.
Well i do remember having ADB issues when rooting the fire even though i had drivers installed.

Meddle70,
That was one of the bugs when adb called to some internal programs like find, ping, etc.
This Bug triggered many failures with Root MANY ANDROID! We just caught it when we took

soon as I saw the error, I said "of course....why we did not see this a few months ago....is

Just a quick note, might be worth editing the first post for clarity, as some users might not be familiar with the concept of %labelGOEShere%
You may also find that %SystemRoot%\system32 is listed in your path. As %SystemRoot% is wherever windows is installed to (c:\windows\ for example), this too is fine, no need to manually specify c:\windows\system32 as well!
Oh also, for the sake of completion/keyboard shortcut lovers, system properties is also accessible by holding down the Windows Flag on your keyboard and tapping the Pause/Break key once.

We are working on a custom ROM for the Kindle Fire HD 7" and 2. The ROM will easily migrate to the Kindle Fire 8.9", we will just have to work on the Touchscreen mapping. We are testing Ubuntu whicch will be really nice since it supports both Windows Apps and Android Apps.
We will post an update over the next few weeks. Thank you for posting your gratitude jmstrat!
Keyboard Shortcut Options
SilentlyScreaming said:
Just a quick note, might be worth editing the first post for clarity, as some users might not be familiar with the concept of %labelGOEShere%
You may also find that %SystemRoot%\system32 is listed in your path. As %SystemRoot% is wherever windows is installed to (c:\windows\ for example), this too is fine, no need to manually specify c:\windows\system32 as well!
Oh also, for the sake of completion/keyboard shortcut lovers, system properties is also accessible by holding down the Windows Flag on your keyboard and tapping the Pause/Break key once.

SilentlyScreaming,
Thank you for posting these comments. we try to keep the thread intuitive and as short as possible. Since there are so many variables, we allow the end users to use options like you prefer to use. I am a shortcut freak - after doing this since 1978, I have learned to use every keyboard shortcut out there! We will add these thoughts to the post and allow user to choose there method, thank you SilentlyScreaming.
To All-
We are finding the bug in Windows Vista (All Versions) Service Pack 1 and Media Center, so if you are a Vista user, please apply the patch as noted in this thread.

SilentlyScreaming,
We discussed adding keyboard shortcuts to our posts this morning, and you are correct, we really should give the end user a choice. We will be adding the info to our posts the beginning of next week. Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts.

Prokennexusa - New Series - The Noob Express Series
To All-
We have listened to all of you, thank you to everyone in XDA Developers for your time and feedback, we are launching a new series for the more advanced and for the people who like quick and dirty tutorials. The new series will be called, The Noob (Simple) Express Series. The idea is to take our core steps and place it into a tutorial, drilling down the steps to 75% of the original tutorial. So, if we have the Root Kindle Fire and it is 10 steps long, we plan to make the new tutorial only 4 steps long.
We will begin to deploy the new series next week. Thank you again!
I have fair number of years of programming behind me. But I haven't tried anything for Android, as I dislike Java.
But I want to try. I want to make something that works at low level, say, like a firewall. It acts as a filter between two communicating parties/devices.
To write anything like that, can someone suggest which is the best approach - code in Java (if it can perform such a feast) or code driver in C?
Thanks much!
Regards,
Nayan

The interesting thing in such low level projects is the entry point: So for a firewall you only have to acces iptables because android has linux kernel. So no C-part, no drivers, only plain java. See AFWall, it's an open source firewall.

Excellent! I would certainly study AFWall. Thanks for the reference.
But actually, my quest doesn't stop here. I am exploring Android, and Google's restriction of "UI to be built only via Java". (I am not interested in scripting and widgets for now, unless they are absolutely needed.)
I want to know the answers for same question (driver or app) for the following:
* Network Filter [EmptinessFiller, you already answered this as Java]
* Disk (SD cards) (for many various purposes) - file system should not block the intention, hopefully.
* USB filter
* SMS filter
I am still thinking of other categories. Will write more later.
Please suggest and refer. Thanks again!
General answer: Your app is always built in java. (It's UI components, it's LifeCycle (Activity, Service, Broadcastreceiver))
You may include native code, but that does not have more possibilities. It's only a little bit quicker.
Forgotten: If you have root, you may want to change some binaries, because you can't change things in an app. There you need native code of course.

Shame, isn't it? Too much power in Java's hand

My point exactly! Low level stuff is best written in native code.
But right now, I am learning how to.

Have a look at the Android NDK and this guide about the development of root apps.

Thanks for the link. Good stuff, but won't help in my targets... unless an example is seen.
