To All Windows 7 and Vista Users:
We have found a serious bug in Windows 7 and Vista that can effect system function and
performance. The Bug appeared when running Root MANY ANDROID! and Qemu but can
cause a number of programs to fail. Please perform these steps to fix the problem. If you
are currently Rooted, do not worry about Re-Rooting, just perform the fix.
Here is the Fix:
1. Go into System, here is how. If you have My Computer or Computer, Right Hand mouse
click choose Properties. If you can not find it here, click on Start Menu, do you see
Computer, Right Hand mouse click choose Properties. If not here, choose Control Panel,
select Small Icons at the top Right. Then select (click) on the System Icon.
2. Once you are in the System Properties, choose "Advanced System Settings"
3. Next Select "Environment Variables"
4. Under "System Variables" find "Path"
5. With the Mouse, select "Path" Choose Edit
6. Be Careful. Scroll to the end of the Path Statement and add: C:\Windows\System32 so the path statement looks like (example only, yours will be different):
C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem;C:\WINDOWS\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Users\Gerry Bryant\AppData\Local\Smartbar\Application\;C:\Users\Gerry Bryant\AppData\Local\Smartbar\Application\;c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\;c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DTS\Binn\;c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\ManagementStudio\;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\WINDOWS\system32
Note: No Space between the ; and the statement C:\WINDOWS\system32 - the statement
is not case sensitive, can be upper case or lower case or a mix of the two.
7. Click on OK, OK and OK until the System Properties is closed.
8. Let's test to see if the Path statement was set properly. Open a Command Window
by clicking on Start > Run > cmd OK or however you know how to open a Command
Window.
9. Once a Command Window is open type:
Code:
ping 4.2.2.2
You should see replies, your output ms= time will vary, just make sure you see a response
and nothing like "not recognized as an internal or external command in Windows". The
output will appear something like:
Code:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.8250]
(c) 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:\Windows\System32>ping 4.2.2.2
Pinging 4.2.2.2 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 4.2.2.2: bytes=32 time=22ms TTL=51
Reply from 4.2.2.2: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=51
Reply from 4.2.2.2: bytes=32 time=23ms TTL=51
Ping statistics for 4.2.2.2:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 21ms, Maximum = 23ms, Average = 21ms
C:\Windows\System32>
That is it! Run Root MANY ANDROID!

meddle70,
No, just fix the issue if it is present on your system. If you never performed Windows Updates:crying:,
then you may not have the problem. When Service Pack 1 was released, the had a Bug in the service
pack that removed the Path Statement. It was fixed in prior service packs but we are finding a high
number of people did not keep there PC Patched. Just go into the Path Statement, see if you find
C:\Windows\System32 in the path. Or drop to command and type:
Code:
path
Do you see C:\Windows\System32 somewhere in the Path Statement?
Current Kindle Fire HD and 2 - Root Sucess
To All-
Everyone who is already Rooted needs to perform the fix although you will not have to perform the Root
Steps againn. This fix is designed to repair a Post Service Pack Bug, that has caused many people
headaches when running ADB. Some people believe that upgrading Java is the solution, indirectly it
is a solution, since the latest version of Java detects the missing Path Statement. Then the Java
installer adds the missing Path Statement of C:\Windows\System32.
Either way, it is important to make sure the Path Statement exists, if it does not, add it per the
instructions.
Well i do remember having ADB issues when rooting the fire even though i had drivers installed.
Thanks for the clarification on that and will do the fix. Thanks for all your hard work!

Meddle70,
That was one of the bugs when adb called to some internal programs like find, ping, etc.
This Bug triggered many failures with Root MANY ANDROID! We just caught it when we took
a close look at a customer PC and noticed a reoccurring error that was not normal. As
soon as I saw the error, I said "of course....why we did not see this a few months ago....is
beyond me!" Anyway, I am glad we were able to help you.

Thank you, have a great 2013.
Thank you so much prokennexusa!
I want to thank you prokennexusa, first of all for being so kind and for replying to nearly every problem I've seen. You must know how much we really appreciate your work and it's nice to have someone be so courteous to others. It's good to know we have good devs here.. :good: Please continue to grace us with your expertise. Are you also working with the other devs, on cm10, for the kindle 8.9? THANKS!
Just a quick note, might be worth editing the first post for clarity, as some users might not be familiar with the concept of %labelGOEShere%
You may also find that %SystemRoot%\system32 is listed in your path. As %SystemRoot% is wherever windows is installed to (c:\windows\ for example), this too is fine, no need to manually specify c:\windows\system32 as well!
Oh also, for the sake of completion/keyboard shortcut lovers, system properties is also accessible by holding down the Windows Flag on your keyboard and tapping the Pause/Break key once.

jmstrat,
We are working on a custom ROM for the Kindle Fire HD 7" and 2. The ROM will easily migrate to the Kindle Fire 8.9", we will just have to work on the Touchscreen mapping. We are testing Ubuntu whicch will be really nice since it supports both Windows Apps and Android Apps.
We will post an update over the next few weeks. Thank you for posting your gratitude jmstrat!

Thank you for posting these comments. we try to keep the thread intuitive and as short as possible. Since there are so many variables, we allow the end users to use options like you prefer to use. I am a shortcut freak - after doing this since 1978, I have learned to use every keyboard shortcut out there! We will add these thoughts to the post and allow user to choose there method, thank you SilentlyScreaming.

Prokennexusa - New Series - The Noob Express Series
To All-
We have listened to all of you, thank you to everyone in XDA Developers for your time and feedback, we are launching a new series for the more advanced and for the people who like quick and dirty tutorials. The new series will be called, The Noob (Simple) Express Series. The idea is to take our core steps and place it into a tutorial, drilling down the steps to 75% of the original tutorial. So, if we have the Root Kindle Fire and it is 10 steps long, we plan to make the new tutorial only 4 steps long.
We will begin to deploy the new series next week. Thank you again!

Hello,
I'm a Visual Basic programmer for some time now.
Made some useful stuff they tell me.
Used C++ (Borland) about 10 years ago, so that’s a bit rusty.
Now I've ordered a Qtek 9090, and I would want to develop some software for it to. So I downloaded and installed the SDK and eMbedded C++ 4.0.
I thought, I start out on the emulator......
I can't even get my own "Hello world" program to work........
I have downloaded a "Hello World" program which I stepped through in debug mode. I have NO idea what they are doing there.
It contains about 20 files, hundreds lines of code, just to put "Hello World" on the screen of the emulator.
And I hoped that:
Code:
#include <stdio.h>
main()
{
printf("Hello, world!\n");
return 0;
}
pleased in a form, would do the trick………
The help in the IDE does not work.
Re-install it tell's me. I have done so, but the help function does not work.
Where is the "visual" part in the embedded Visual C++?
How do I place forms and buttons e.g.?
I have no idea where to start now.
Searched a lot of forum's for starters-help, but I can not find anything that helps me on my way. I just hope I've not become stupid.....
Would somebody please help me on my way?
Can I wholeheartedly recommend the book "Programming Windows CE", by Douglas Boling? It's normally cheap (or the second edition is) on ebay and it really is good.
Failing that, you're writing a console based application for something that uses a windowing environment by default, so you'll either have to change what you're linking to, or have a winmain that makes use of a graphical UI rather than stdout. Call MessageBox perhaps? This is all made *so* much easier with a working help system that you need to get that working.
You can manage resource files visually, so it really is Visual development. Plus, for free, it's an excellent development tool. Well, it isn't bad.
The best advice I can give is to get your machine set up correctly with EVC2002, or EVC 4 with SP4 and the appropriate SDKs, and take it from there.
Good luck starting out.
Cheers,
Nick.

Well, yes. I know. Like I sayed, I usualy work with VB. It was just me, trying to oversimplify things.
What I ment to express is that I'm pretty supprised I still have to write the message-loop and the main-loop and the jsadgkh-loop and....
I just hoped to put up some forms and attach code to it. But maybe I'm missing the clue on this.

And a 'free' tool. Well, that's allways nice. I think it is good for us, AND good for them. The more software there will be on the market, the better the devices sell.

Dox, drop me a PM, I've got an old copy of the book you can have if it would help
Re the message loop stuff, you've indeed got options. You can either use the message loop approach hitting the API directly, or you can opt for using MFC to abstract the stuff away from you.
Personally, I prefer the straightforwardness of using the API rather than MFC. By the time you've written one application, you've got the bulk of the next . I also write for older machines, and the overhead of MFC is a consideration, but on the XDA it really isn't.
If the application is simple, it can all be handled by a DialogBox. You will need to write a DialogProc to handle the appropriate messages, but the need to register a window class, get messages off the queue etc is removed from you. Similarly, you can have multiple pages on a single dialog box using propertypages.
If you did want to write a console application, you can do this but you need to change the linker options within EVC.
Have a good look at the samples, too, there's some real good stuff in there.
Cheers, and good luck
Nick.
Hello Folks !
I know that the issue of "vanishing" SD memory cards has been discussed in the XDA Forum before, and from those threads I also figured that there is a Hotfix patch available for this problem from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948278/
But Microsoft does not offer a download link for that fix
Instead they direct you to their "beg me for it" support site, where they state that owners of pre-installed Vista systems are only offered support on a "pay per support request" basis at the tune of >$60 per ticket :-(
All others are directed to go the website of their device's manufacturer.
But HTC doesn't offer any patches or fixes for the Shift, heck they don't even have an "updated driverrs" section there
But things have gotten that bad on my Shift by now that every time I switch SD cards (even w/o hibernation), I get the exact error the MS note describes and have to reboot Vista to get my SD card back
Can anyone here please(!!) send me that MS Hotfix.
Why do I have to pay to get a buggy SW fixed, simply because I am the legit owner of a Window's Vista version?
Whoever was so screwed up in the head to put Vista on that box in the first place?
If not for the missing drivers for XP (resolution changer and the like), I would have already kicked Vista of that darn thing myself.
Best would of course have been Linux, but the driver sittuation there is even worse (no touchpad, no SNAPVuE, ...)
Please, somebody help me here.
The HTC Shift, such a powerfull device, and such a lousy implementation

I am using a 16G SD card from A data. In order to use it, I have to reboot the shift. Now I have purchased an external SD card reader, it then works better!

Pleeeeaaase, I'm not a fool.
I've read through the posts of the guy who wrote most of the drivers for Linux and by his own admission things like touchscreen only work under Linux if Windoze initialized the device first (dual boot option).
Such clumsy work arounds might be fine for you, but I need this box for WORK, not play.
So I can't afford to have to mess around first to get certain functions running, and I need every single item on that box - be it touchpad, phone or screen rez change...
And anything that requires Dual Boot is unacceptable for work from the get go.
Imagine my project leaders wants me to perform a certain task on the fly and my reply is "OK Boss, just give me 5-10 minutes, I'll have for boot into Windoze for that first" :-(
Either it *all* works under Linux or otherwise I wasted a lot of money on an oversized paper weight.

Maybe they build that page for each location differently, but for my current locale (German province), I was exactly looking for that link (even using the "search" function), but could not find it.

Or maybe that page only works correctly if used with IE ???

OK, I just tried again with another browser.
Now it seems to work OK and I'll wait for MS response.
The thing that worries me is that the web page said "for Vista Business SP2".
But I only got Service Pack 1 and I don't even think that there is an SP2 out yet for Vista.
I checked on the MS website just this weekend and they only listed SP1.
Am I wrong here about the MS Service Packs for Vista???

It was pof who jumped into this thread proclaiming very loudly that his drivers would make *all* under Linux work.
Emphasis on all on his own part.
So if he makes a claim which proofs to be false, then I would call that very unprofessional indeed (not that I allege such at this point, but that is why I listed all the [many] devices his claim would include).
I don't know about the environment in which the "heavyweights" you mention in this forum work, but in my world making a claim like that would get me fired if it proofed to be untrue.
And I'm talking about the kind of projects here where such news travels very fast - and I did mention that I use my Shift for work.
Thus my livelyhood depends on my systems functioning 100% (not 95% or 99%).
And despite me being an avert Linux user myself, I'm not one of those folks who believe I have to get all my stuff for free, thus if I do not find that someone willing to write drivers for free obliges me to be gratefull beyond agony (should they still not work as advertised).
Quite the opposite. I'm among the first willing to pay for my SW as long as it works. I did not choose Linux (for my PC) because it is "free", as screwing up on the job because of a failing System would cost me a lot more than simply paying for a professional operating system.
So if something does not work right (like having to boot into Windows first before I can start working under Linux), I do call it "clumsy" - because that is what it is!
If pof wants to be paid for his drivers, he can PM me about that proposal.
But in any case I'll demand for that stuff to work 100% or else I call it what it is.
Because my boss would call me far worse if I'd screw up because I e.g. couldn't access my info because my HTC Shift went bye bye on the job.
(enough smileys?)
PS thaihugo, the tone of your reply already convinced me to stick with Windoze on the Shift.
Because as lousy as Vista works on the HTC, at least there I do have "bragging rights" (as you call it) to demand working SW - because I paid for it.
That's a lot better than trying to get some freebie working and if it ain't working to be told "hey, what do you want? You got it for free!"

Can you be more specific which methods you mean?
i.e., the RPEnabled registry change, renaming shsxs.dll, third party tools, or something else??
i would like to know this as well, ive tried the small program download that does the registry entry for you.
Considering it's still a "preview" I'd assume the RPEnabled method will still work, only issue is because the start orb is gone would the start menu come back, etc.
The register and dll files changed so none of the previous methods I found work.
"RPEnabled" is gone and so is "shsxs.dll".
And also the little tool that does this for you from deviantart which just changes the "RPEnabled" and in Windows 8 consumer preview creates it since it's not there, doesn't work.
Hi everybody,

Try this http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2460-start-menu-toolbar-create-windows-8-taskbar.html
I also replaced developer Preview with consumer preview, what a mistake!
If there will be way to enable the classic start menu or to disable Metro it is time to say goodbye to Windows. Since Unity is unusable too, Linux Mint will be the system of my choice. But especially for corporate use there must be a hidden option since I cannot imagine being productive with metro at all.
gpedit.msc brings hundreds of options, maybe something is hidden there?
maybe there hide link like god mode ?
I hope that in some time, we still have a choice, to use a touchscreen, or a mouse/keyb.
We SHOULD have the choice! (So any luck on finding a hidden start orb?)
Yeah I just installed Windows 8 to a work computer for testing and I don't see it being a productive tool at all. I can already hear the complaints and see the trouble tickets being put in by freaked out and irate end users. WT? is Microsoft thinking? Don't get me wrong, I would use it on a tablet or a home computer but this will just confuse people who have been using a traditional desktop with icons and a start menu since like Windows 1.0.

Hi everybody,
I've started a new Thread with a petition for Microsoft, to let us decide whether or not we want Metro.
Check it out, and sign it, please.

Just signed it because if we don't voice our opinion then they will dictate what we can and can't do on Windows 8 just like they did on Windows Phone by locking it down and make it almost useless.

Try this
I have a couple desktops in my house and both were installed with Retail Windows 8 with keys. They were activated without issue. Now, one of them is constantly asking for activation. Every time I activate it, it says it is activated and then the next time you sit at the PC, it asks again.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

More info would be needed to answer this. Did you buy the promotion for win 8 at the reduced price? Are both computers on the same key, or two different keys? If they are different, are they legit?

As what AlonB said, yes you need to clarify those things first.
1. Are you using same key on both computers?
2. Is it legit?

I would try a manual Product key install. I had the same issue when I went from my Windows 8 Preview to Windows 8 Pro..
I had to put in the key through command prompt..
Step 1:
Run Command Prompt as administrator
Step 2:
slmgr.vbs -ipk 00000-00000-00000-00000-00000
Step 3: go to settings, change pc settings, activate windows.
**optional** step 3: go to desktop, then control panel, then activate windows from control panel.

Did you add Media Center to the two PCs? If so, did you use the same key for both Media Center installs. I accidently did this on one of 4 computers I upgraded and it kept asking for a valid key. I input a new Media Center key and it fixed the problem.
may be that computer already update automatically to microsoft, so there is update on your system and it need to input your key again...
i'm sorry if this can not help you...
be patient and try some other ways...
Sorry for lateness of reply and thank you all for your help and suggestions.

Only one PC has Media Center, but that PC is not having this issue.
I will try some of the other suggestions and see what we can manage. I'll also Phone Activation which I have found on other sites.
Thanks all!

I hope you solve your issue. If you need to dig further, I'd suggest a Windows hacking site, eg (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/forums/42-Windows-8). There, you can find any amount of detail about MS' "new and improved" DRM, OA 3.0, that you care to. And if you don't want to take the trouble, there are ready-made solutions for the ADDs.
No disrespect, but it's with considerable irony that an MS employee has to seek help with his legitimately licensed Windows, while the warez peeps can skip all of the ballyhoo with a 5-min Goog search, and another minute to run their very own KMS activation server. No hacks, no cracks. The difference in convenience is so stark that even legit users may want to avail of the warez solution. It's akin to buying a BluRay and then grabbing a HD rip off the net than messing with the Digital Copy.
It's been said many times: DRM afflicts the legit users more than the pirates. Win8 is no exception. That MS is resorting to more and more draconian DRM speaks poorly of its understanding of tech. Perhaps Win8's current travails are a consequence of that myopia.
To elaborate on a previous reply, the basic troubleshooting steps are below. When prompted with the activation request, open an elevated command prompt and check on the status of your activation, with
slmgr -dli (display license info)
then uninstall your key, with
slmgr -upk (uninstall product key)
and try installing it again, with
slmgr -ipk <your_key> (install product key)
slmgr -ato (activate Windows)
Check again with
slmgr -dli
As you said, next step would be phone activation. 3rd step: restore from "Change PC settings". Last step: Clean reinstall. In order of work involved.
Thanks for all that and I agree, a shame that I can't get help internally.
I did find a similarity. My dad's computer started doing the same thing.
BOTH of these machines were Upgraded, not a clean install like mine (I tend to shy away from upgrading).
Still working on it.
Thanks again for the suggestions, I am going to poke around the dark side to see what they have come up with.
Win 8.1 new pc asking over and over to activate windows

If you ever figure out why, let me know. I bought a new computer, windows already installed and I've been through the activate windows every day for the last four days.
Weird. Only activated my Win8 key one time here.
Morning all,
I have never created an app, but decided to look into it late last year. I began work on an app around September 2014, did a little work every weekend, and haven't really touched anything since November.
I have experience with HTML, CSS etc (I can write them). I can also have a basic understanding of other codes such as PHP, JavaScript, Java, C etc - basically, enough that I could take some code and edit it to suite.
I was hoping that creating an app would a) help grow my current business and b) give me a new challenge to learn new code.
Anyway, I'm really stuck on what to do. I downloaded Eclipse at home, but my laptop is on it's last legs. I have been creating the app at the office, using Adobe Flash Builder 4.7. I read a few tutorials, and downloaded some sample apps to learn from (as part of some of the tutorials). However, none of them have what I want.
My App Idea
So, enough waffling on, I'll try and explain my app without giving away what I want to do.
Basically, the app will be one where users can enter an error code, and press search. The result would be a page showing the description of the error code, and then what the solution is to fix it. There is then potential to add a "buy this part from" link which will suggest suppliers to visit.
So, as an example, let's say a user got a Blue Screen error code on their PC of "ABC1234". They would enter that code into my app, and the result would say something like:
Code: ABC1234
Description: RAM Error - overheating
Fix/Solution: Replace RAM
What I Have So Far
Other than a couple of test files that I've been learning with, I don't have anything solid in terms of an app. What I do have though is an Excel file with 889 error codes and what each code means.
What I Need
So, I guess what I need is either:
some help/guidance on how to create an app that in it's simplest form is a home page with a search box, and then 889 pages in the background that return depending on the searched error code.
or, someone willing to help me develop such an app
Firstly, download Android Studio - Don't use eclipse anymore
Secondly, here is a tut on using an older version of Android Studio
Have a go, see how you end up. Let us know, if you're really needing help, ask here again
Thanks,
I'll have to try that once I get home as the IT Administrator at work has to vet everything that gets installed.

Thanks sir but do we have a highly compressed Android Studio? 800mb+ is such a big file to download.
Like minooch said, install an IDE, understand how it works and then try some tuts on Internet to learn how Android works. What you want to do isn't really hard, you'll manage quickly to do it but you will be prouder if you do all by yourself.
Some hints : Don't go coding directly, try to organize your project (data structure, classes, methods) before starting to code. On a small project, it's not as important but if you start doing things well now, you'll thank yourself in the future

Hello.. You just cannot make a app like for such kind of work. You have to make make a website server for the same and then make a app for it. I know a technique for such kinda work.Web crawling us your answer. If you could setup a website for that then I can make a app for that easily within two days. Inbox for any further information or quote back

You need the JDK. Please read the instructions on the download page. Under the section 'Requirements'
