I know that the issue of "vanishing" SD memory cards has been discussed in the XDA Forum before, and from those threads I also figured that there is a Hotfix patch available for this problem from Microsoft:

But Microsoft does not offer a download link for that fix
Instead they direct you to their "beg me for it" support site, where they state that owners of pre-installed Vista systems are only offered support on a "pay per support request" basis at the tune of >$60 per ticket :-(
All others are directed to go the website of their device's manufacturer.
But HTC doesn't offer any patches or fixes for the Shift, heck they don't even have an "updated driverrs" section there
But things have gotten that bad on my Shift by now that every time I switch SD cards (even w/o hibernation), I get the exact error the MS note describes and have to reboot Vista to get my SD card back
Can anyone here please(!!) send me that MS Hotfix.
Why do I have to pay to get a buggy SW fixed, simply because I am the legit owner of a Window's Vista version?
Whoever was so screwed up in the head to put Vista on that box in the first place?
If not for the missing drivers for XP (resolution changer and the like), I would have already kicked Vista of that darn thing myself.
Best would of course have been Linux, but the driver sittuation there is even worse (no touchpad, no SNAPVuE, ...)
Please, somebody help me here.

I have the same problem too!
I am using a 16G SD card from A data. In order to use it, I have to reboot the shift. Now I have purchased an external SD card reader, it then works better!
you said you have read all the thread concerning that fix. In one of them, you can download it.
BTW, the fix actually doesn't fix much, but you can still hope.

What are you talking about? We have 100% hardware support for the shift in Linux, everything is working, check my blog.

I've tried to install this hotfix and it prompts "This hotfix is not meant for your system". I have Vista Bussiness SP1.

Pleeeeaaase, I'm not a fool.
I've read through the posts of the guy who wrote most of the drivers for Linux and by his own admission things like touchscreen only work under Linux if Windoze initialized the device first (dual boot option).
Such clumsy work arounds might be fine for you, but I need this box for WORK, not play.
So I can't afford to have to mess around first to get certain functions running, and I need every single item on that box - be it touchpad, phone or screen rez change...
And anything that requires Dual Boot is unacceptable for work from the get go.
Imagine my project leaders wants me to perform a certain task on the fly and my reply is "OK Boss, just give me 5-10 minutes, I'll have for boot into Windoze for that first" :-(
Either it *all* works under Linux or otherwise I wasted a lot of money on an oversized paper weight.

Maybe they build that page for each location differently, but for my current locale (German province), I was exactly looking for that link (even using the "search" function), but could not find it.
If you could post that URL I would appreciate it.
Or maybe that page only works correctly if used with IE ???

You are in front of that guy... and yes, that was one of the caveats from the first versions of the touchscreen driver (looks like you haven't been updated since a looong time), now the initialization works correctly and dualboot is not needed anymore.

OK, I just tried again with another browser.
Now it seems to work OK and I'll wait for MS response.
The thing that worries me is that the web page said "for Vista Business SP2".
But I only got Service Pack 1 and I don't even think that there is an SP2 out yet for Vista.
I checked on the MS website just this weekend and they only listed SP1.
Am I wrong here about the MS Service Packs for Vista???

So you are telling me that SnapVuE, Touchscreen, Fingerprint Reader, Rez Change, Touchpad, Modem, WebCam, Audio and WM6 connectivity *all* work under Linux?
Be carefull what you claim here, because I am a Linux user & admin and have a "ready2install" SuSE 11.x distro right in front of me!

I suggest you to tone down, because pof is actually the only guy I know working on linux drivers for the shift. Talking about clumsy workaround is not the best way to thank him. Maybe you can use some smiley here.
May I also remind you that there are some heavyweight professionals on this forum, so claiming your professional problems as a bragging right might be a bit moot for most of us.

The fix is for pre-SP1. So it cannot install on SP1
ANd there is no SP2 for vista. You're reading probably something for XP

Well, I haven't tried it myself, but there are some guys in the comments of your "linux on shift" blog, that claim that there are severe problems with WiFi.
They say it won't work with WEP enabled networks.
Can you confirm this or is there a fix available?

May I suggest you tone it down yourself?
It was pof who jumped into this thread proclaiming very loudly that his drivers would make *all* under Linux work.
Emphasis on all on his own part.
So if he makes a claim which proofs to be false, then I would call that very unprofessional indeed (not that I allege such at this point, but that is why I listed all the [many] devices his claim would include).
I don't know about the environment in which the "heavyweights" you mention in this forum work, but in my world making a claim like that would get me fired if it proofed to be untrue.
And I'm talking about the kind of projects here where such news travels very fast - and I did mention that I use my Shift for work.
Thus my livelyhood depends on my systems functioning 100% (not 95% or 99%).
And despite me being an avert Linux user myself, I'm not one of those folks who believe I have to get all my stuff for free, thus if I do not find that someone willing to write drivers for free obliges me to be gratefull beyond agony (should they still not work as advertised).
Quite the opposite. I'm among the first willing to pay for my SW as long as it works. I did not choose Linux (for my PC) because it is "free", as screwing up on the job because of a failing System would cost me a lot more than simply paying for a professional operating system.
So if something does not work right (like having to boot into Windows first before I can start working under Linux), I do call it "clumsy" - because that is what it is!
If pof wants to be paid for his drivers, he can PM me about that proposal.
But in any case I'll demand for that stuff to work 100% or else I call it what it is.
Because my boss would call me far worse if I'd screw up because I e.g. couldn't access my info because my HTC Shift went bye bye on the job.

PS thaihugo, the tone of your reply already convinced me to stick with Windoze on the Shift.
Because as lousy as Vista works on the HTC, at least there I do have "bragging rights" (as you call it) to demand working SW - because I paid for it.
That's a lot better than trying to get some freebie working and if it ain't working to be told "hey, what do you want? You got it for free!"

I'm absolutely new to the PDA thing, I never had one, I never held one, and according to that, I never used one.
I think about buying one, but I still have too many unasked questions no one yet answered.
I definately don't want to use Windows on this one. So if there is a, let's say, chance higher than 50% that I won't be able to get Linux working on it, I simply won't buy it.
What I searched for and what I still need is an elaborated progress report, of how stable, fast and reasonable a HTC Universal can be used along with Linux. I'm so newbie that I don't even know if it will be able to do phone calls with Linux installed...
My provider is T-Mobile germany, and I could get one (called "MDA Pro" or "MDA IV") for 133€ (about 1:1 dollar, correct me if I am wrong)
I would get the "MDA Vario" for about 1€, but I cannot figure out the real model name, here is a picture:

But back to my question: Who can offer a progress report? It would be perfect if the author would be at the same provider as me, but it's not really important. I also accept any provider proposals, as well as PDA proposals. I just thought of the Universal because I like the feature list and keyboard, but it won't be a problem to use a touchscreen exclusively.
So how usable is the HTC Universal with Linux? What can I do and what can't I?
You don't have to answer me myself if my questions are, at least partially, covered by a website. If you have any beginner information about installing, using and developing Linux on and for PDAs, I would love to see them.

I never used assembler on a PPC, and though I wanted, I never wrote a Linux kernel module.

Also great would be an universal emulator to try out ROMs and work on them a little. Is anything available/in progress/planned?

First of all, you should go around the corner, find the next T-Mobile shop and by your MDA Pro device :`)
After that, you can follow the instructions installing Linux on a SD Card from the wiki page. The first link, i gave you.
After that, you can ask more questions in the "Linux on Universal" Thread :`)
Maybe if you are familar with Linux, you can help building a rootfs image.

You don't need to. The main problems are in the hardware
area, wince driver operation, nice wince GUI installer,
nice windows GUI installer, fixing bugs in Qt programs.
Also great would be an universal emulator to try out ROMs and work on them a little.

We are testing everything on the real hardware.
Creating a device "emulator" is even more complicated
than fully porting Linux.

The root filesystem HAS to be on SD/MMC Cards <= 1024MB.
How do you guys exchange music etc.? Can I really not install the root filesystem on the internal memory of that device? Would 128 MB be enough?
I'm warned that my device could be damaged. If so, would the providers warranty apply? Or does it expire if I change the operating system?
The mini-howto tells me to do a backup, but I cannot find an explanation of how to do this.
I think it should just be a dd of the device when mounted on my workstation, but I prefer to have an explanation anyway.

As far as I know, we still have the 1GB SD Card limit. Yes, you have to install the rootfs on the SD Card. 128 MB are enough for hosting the basic rootfs image.
Well, I just bought this device. I will get it on the 20. of juni. (It's my birthday, and this is no coincidence ;D)
There is only one thing left of this list I really need to know:
Can I reinstall this windows CE thing?
I will perhaps hit a situation were I need something fully functionaning ASAP, so I'd love to know.
But I allready bought it, this is just important for my decision to install Linux on it. If I can somehow backup or reinstall this windows CE thing, I'll definately follow the guide and help development as good as possible for me.
I got my device, followed the guide, installed opie and gpe on it (first tried opie, didn't like the look and then switched to gpe. Found out that GPE cannot manage the universals monitor-spin and switched back to opie.) and now I have got everything up and running.
Couldn't find anything non-working yet too, though I still need to figure out how to make (at least the keyboard layout) german.
Now I also know that Opie/GPE can coexist with WinCE without problems, which makes me very happy.
But there is one thing that still bothers me:
I cannot go online via GPRS or make/accept phone calls when Linux is booted.
Is this possible at all? Neither Opie nor GPE do seem to have any software for doing a phone call.
Is there a guide on how to set up telephony and GPRS internet?

I finally got the 2.6.16 opie working on my Universal (O2 XDA Exec) . I was using a simplified chinese version WM 5.0 originally.
As I am an experienced Linux PDA user, I owned Sharp Zaurus 5500, 5600, and C1000, ran Qtopid, Cacko, OpenZaurus, and GPE . The current opie port to the Universal is really a fork from the opie about the Sharp Zaurus C-series . In fact, I think it is good. Becaue opie has a large user base and has existed for a long time.
What I think about the current "Linux on Universal" work is rough, but good to see it can already up-and-running, and even IR bluetooth, and wi-fi working . however, there are many things we should do. We should put the branch into the official OPIE development work (create a feed at http://opie.handhelds.org) .
Some easy todos
- Map universal keybroad keys properly . Add virtual ctrl and alt key maps . Cannot do escape, maybe use the hangup key to do so.
- Enable the hot key for wireless configurations, need to write a simple interface and redirect to the desired settings_app
- sound is not working (driver problem?)
- battery charing is not working for me, battery status is not showing anything
- Volume control applet need to hook up with volume up/down key
- USB storage emulation support (can copy from Zaurus feed and cacko rom)
- Keyboard LED auto detection, or on/off swich by hook up the light hotkey
Other todos may depends on other componetns
- Get webcam software or camera software (depends on camera driver)
- Fnid a phone interface software, or write up one (depends on the phone hw driver availability)
- Repartition the internal flash, boot Linux se JFFS directly

My first installation of OPIE doesn't work, the touch screen didn't work. Cannot get through the calibration process. I then reformat the SD Card, and untar again for GPE. Same issue, but GPE can work without a pointer/TS . I then get back to 2.6.12 and findout the files on the website are corrupted. Then I install 2.6.16 OPIE again, then it alll worked (include TS). After a reboot, it still work. I suspect there are some HW status condition bugs in the TS driver. But I cannot do battery charge, LED lights after plug USB .
Hope these comment helps the project. I am happy to get around with this project. And I am experienced Linux user/developer . Hope to hear feedbacks from you guys.

It is allmost done. HTC UNiversal has some support in Opie, i am sitting on some files wich are allmost ready to be commited, but if more comes in your mind, then commit it.

Escape is the green telephone button on the hardware keyboard. A keymap is a plan, you are welcome to do it if you want to.

Sound worked in the .12 kernel, there are profgress here. The CVS got drivers today, i tried it, but it's still buggy.

I have heard others have had the same problem. But i have had it only once, it happend yesterday. I dont know what it is, but it seems like it is a good idea to have .opiestorage.cf in the root of your linux partition the foirst time you boot.
Yes i have heard that the .12 image is broken, i will upload a working one.

I've not tried Linux on my universal yet, bit I've got a couple of questions to people that have tried it and the fantastic people that are developing this:
How fast does it run, faster than WM5?
Will this ever be simple and easy to install for users that have little or no experience with Linux?(The tutorials still look like Japaneses to me)
When(if ever) do you guys think this will be able to be used as a phone?
And finally I ask as a big gamer, How well does/will it play games? Does Linux suffer from the same keyboard driver problem as WM5?(not responding to multiple key presses)

Hi,
I purchased the latest version of AntonTomov's PocketMechanic via Handango and received the registration key immediately after finished purchase procedure.
Installation on my TyTN seemed to work out first (the program accepted the key with a message box and a sound).
But only moments later a message box popped up, telling me I use a pirated version and should turn to the manufacturer, which I did (also mailed Handango).
Meanwhile tried to install PM several times (always removing all traces from both PC and TyTn incl. Registry and rebooted) - to no avail.
Meanwhile received a new serial, but same story again: first accepted and immediately afterwards aborted with Piracy message.
A new complaint mail is on ist way.
Meanwhile I'm asking here if anybody had similar problems in getting the Pocket Mechanics to work on a TyTN.
Appreciating feedback and will let te community know how it worked out for me.
I would not use or buy Tomov's products out of principal.
Found a lot of threads about earlier version doing a hard reset without asking, when inputted a "pirated" serial. So be glad it only shows a box nowdays.
While software piracy is not a good thing, at least for people developing propietary software. Tomov has used a bit too drastic measures to fight
back.

Found a lot of threads about earlier version doing a hard reset without asking, when inputted a "pirated" serial. So be glad it only shows a box nowdays.
While software piracy is not a good thing, at least for people developing propietary software. Tomov has used a bit too drastic measures to fight
back.

I also read a few note about that on the net and a reply by Tomov, complaining that this is not true and only a campaign to cut him off his revenues.
Well, I do not know what to believe, however this uncertainty is also not too comfortable...
Well the Pocket Mechanic way of uses some hardware dependent functions and - if you dare to take use of such - you have to either be very careful and also prepared that they might not work on untested and after all very new (such as the TyTN) devices.
I was prepared for all of that but not that I receive a piracy mail (which somewhat alsmost accuses you of being a software pirate and telling you to mail to [email protected]) when I purchased the software (which I can also prove).
Maybe he uses some hardware related mechanism to check eligibility of the serial and as he hasn't tested yet the TyTN (which he admits) this software won't allow being registered at all. I do not know.
But isn't such a meachanism pure over-kill ?
Actually something like that must be going on as I receive this pop up also after a new install and having purged all remnants from the PC, the PDA and the registry.
If I'd be trying out serials just at random, would anyone think that I'll millions of times do that complete procedure just to find any working key at the end of my life maybe ???
(And if I'd be a professional hacker I'd disassemble the code and be able to work around even these barriers.)
So, applying over-kill measures like that only brings problems to decent users, risking to run into problems when using special configurations or ne devices.

Apart from that I must say that Tomov's applications seem well coded and also graphically very nice (one wonders how graphically nice application you can program for PDAs; shame upon Microsoft for their pre-installed poor applications !!!).
Also I see no real alternatives for some functionality he provided within one software, that's why I purchased the PM.
Finally again my question:
Has anyone encountered the same problems with the PM on a HTC TyTN ?

I'm hopeful someone can crack the stupid dumbed down version of WM that HTC is installing and figure out how to get WM6 on this beauty. The two dumbest things I've read so far are that a.) the PDA side can't access the SD card slot (that's even more idiotic than not being able to access the hard drive IMO), and the SnapVue program itself. I understand their desire to save licensing costs, but the whole decision to isolate the PDA side sounds like a deal they made with the telecoms - forcing the PDA side to only interact with the laptop side only through the telecom's system (where they can charge you with a data plan) is idiotic. Personally, I expect to use this device as a stand-alone laptop and not even use the 3G/HSPDA - I've already got that on my Trinity and paying for two full data plans makes zero sense. If anything, I'd like to do a BT modem lash-up through my phone.
If anyone's looking for some ideas to hack this thing, my personal wish list is:
1.) Get WM6 installed instead of SnapVue (may be a problem given the screen resolution tho)
2.) Unlock the SD card for the PDA side
3.) Unlock the hard drive for the PDA side (this would be HUGE)
Just imagine - you're on a flight, you watch a full movie on the PDA side off an SD card, using low battery consumption, then in the airport you tap into the WiFi and log into your work network to get work done, then later at the hotel you plug in and do some real work on the laptop side. Add in checking your push email on the cab ride to your hotel (PDA side, full keyboard) if you choose the HSPDA activation. That's my dream machine! now if I only knew enough code to make it happen! <grin>

Having been in the postion of carrying around (for several years)
a good data PDA (this means a Psion)
and a phone
and a Windows Mobile PDA (often an XDA so that makes for 2 devices total)
I have been waiting for Mr Shift to arrive since its first showing in early 2007.
In November the PDF manuals were available from FCC ... what a total disappointment. Did somebody from Apple join HTC? Did they close the architecure at every possible moment ... We need at least:
a) Ability to run full WM6
b) Ability to install any WM6 application
c) Ability to use it as a (very large) telephone
d) Ability to let the PDA part of the Shift be able to access the local Vista and a remote Windows machine
Many people (like me) use their Windows mobile PDA to act as a bridge from their work outlook (probably server) and their home Outlook standalone.
Currently my XDA's or equivalent forms that important link from my Work calendar, tasks and contacts, and my home calendar, tasks and contacts.
Any PDA replacement needs to be able to at least do that!
e) If using a 3G SIM and appropriate data plan then access via this to the Interweb from both PDA and PC sides.
The Shift would seem to make a pretty decent UMPC and it includes a keyboard, but as-is it seems the PDA function and the phone function are an insult to ones intelligence.

I think we all feel the same about is.
The choises HTC made make no sence at all and make the PDA side of the shift nothing more than some kind of side-show.
Like everyone else I´d like a FULL pda side. With all normal apps (including office). Doing without phone capabilities might not keep me form buying the shift but if it has not got full pda functionality then it is totaly uninteresting. I would buy a small notebook with longer battery life. (and with XP for that matter).
So it´s time for the guys at HTC to wake up!
Maybe they could make different versions? I would be willing to pay a bit more for a version with full WM6...

I agree with everyone that the droned down version of this device sucks, but don't blame HTC. Blame vaporware maker Dualcor for their once great idea and not can't be found Dualcor PPC. It was suppose to run windows, and windows mobile and be a phone. After some time, they realized they couldn't do the phone thing and eventually the product, to my knowledge, was never fully released. HTC can't put the full version of windows mobile to due copyright infringment. Dualcor even stated it.

Uhm... SnapVue is just a name HTC came up with... what it *actually* is, is just a little DLL they wrote that overlays the WM6 taskbars so that you can't tap on them... I know because I've already gotten my hands on the relevant material and ported SnapVue to the Athena... what's more, I've also patched the DLL so that it doesn't disable the taskbars any more... assuming we can use Activesync to do our dirty business for us in terms of getting new certificates on the damn thing (failing that it'll be SPL hacking time) then it won't be a problem.
the proper Vista OS is interesting too... it's actually deployed in a bastardised sort of Symantec Ghost image type thing, but it weighs in at 8GB so there's not a bloody chance in hell you'll be seeing updates to this in their entirety.
Hey guys I'm new to this forum and everything that you guys do here(so if you could use a little patients with me i would appreciate it), but this forum has helped me to do some cool things with my htc titan, and for that i thank you. Now i ask you what kind of mods do you think will come out for the shift? There are some great developers here that can do some cool things, and from reading this topic do i correctly gather that it is possible to put wm6 on the shift, and it is impossible to put xp on the shift? sorry for the long post, but one last thing. What service provider and plan would be offered for the shift or what would be best for the shift?

I saw this program on the news a minute ago and the concept is really cool. With the builtin GPS or WiFi (how can WiFi be accurate!!!!), a user presses an auto/self configured button to report each of the 4 kinds of trap. When a user is at the vicinity of a trap, a shrill voice (builtin/self recorded) will announce the type of trap to the user. The web site is at http://www.trapster.com. Every body must have thought of this concept before (me included) but thank Jebus finally some body did it!!!
I just sent my X7500 back to get the MicroDrive fixed so don't have anything to test it with. Would some body with an Athena please try this program and report any problems using it on this particular device?
It's still in beta and free right now. However, if it becomes a subscription service, I wouldn'd mind paying for it. Provided that the fee is reasonable like the $20/year subscription fee of www.schedulesdirect.org If it is more than $20/year, I will have second thoughts.
How much would you pay for it?

Woah, who got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning?...
In the US it's a good idea - very sketchy in the UK at the moment and not as good as the PocketGPS ones or those available in Cameraware. But then they are free! Again, critical mass needs to be reached - in the US with very little alternative, it might be, in the UK I'm not so sure.

yea i just found this today. and did a search on here. jw if anyone has done this with the tmobile wing. i tried it but my phone said unsuccessful download. so i tried to download from my phone and it said its not pocket pc compatible. am i doing something wrong? sorry, kinda new to this forum.

Well after reading the how to on the website today, you have to actually dl it to the pc first and install it through active sync. I wasn't able to do it from work plus I didn't have my data cable with me in the office. I'll get around to it tonight tho and let you know how it goes.
i downloaded it to my pc, active syncd it, my phone screen popped up w/ a "yes" or "no". clicked yes. save to storage card. failed twice then said unsuccessful.

What a big disappointment!!! The concept is great but the Windows Mobile version of this program is still in *JUNK* status. It lacks many of most basic functions such as GPS configuration (port, baud, etc...) It installed alright on my Athena. However, when I ran it, it kept telling me "Can't get GPS location (87)..." while all of my other GPS apps (Google Maps, Live Search, CoPilot Live) that were running at the same time had no GPS problem at all. I'll wait for the next version before using it.
Edited: The GPS problem is most likely due to AP4...
I have downgraded my athena to ap3 and the gps problem is fixed. so the previous gps problem is because of ap4. with the athena, there's no good way to report redlight, etc... by key press as the athena's key assignment took precedent. However, the announcement is excellent though the volume is pretty low. I will have to re-record the alert messages.

We've now added the capability to connect to GPS directly via the COM port, in addition to the GPS Intermediate Driver (GPSID) method which is supposed to handle all that automatically. The problem with the direct COM port method is that the app (Google Maps, Live Search, CoPilot Live, and Trapster(R)) then "hogs" the GPS. This sort of sharing is what the GPSID was supposed to fix, but unfortunately in an attempt to block all apps that are not paid (like TeleNav etc.) carriers have gimped the config screens etc. I've seen COM port "splitter" programs but have not tested them personally.

We also added (some other stuff relevant to Windows):
- a mobile site. Just go to trapster.com/m and you can sign up, sign in, and download right there.
- "Ack" feature for Windows Mobile and "CarPC" (which means just run on your laptop) If you are a regular Trapster user in any US metro area (where trap density is high) you will definitely appreciate the "Ack" feature. No more ears ringing "police often hide here"... you just hit Ack (or mapped voice command) and it mutes until you encounter a new trap.
- support for WiFi location mode in Vista.

Thank you for such a cool app. Once I get used to it, it's pretty cool to use. I used it in July while I was visiting Florida and it did saved me from being pulled over while driving through the Alligator Alley. I'm using it every day now. Pretty cool.
For us Athena users, while the key mapping is not working well, I found that we can put the trapster folder on Start menu and have it opened in the background with all command icons showing. I'm using it with CoPilot. When I see an incident I need to report, I simply click on the [OK] button to minimize CoPilot and click on the appropriate icon to report the incident. Then I click on CoPilot again to open it up over the trapster menu. It's workable. Wish Athena has more buttons or Trapster is integrated with Microsoft Voice Command. It would be sooo cool to click a button to activate Microsoft Voice Command and say "Report Live Police" and have everything else done for us.

Hi sumtingwong, thanks for the kind words and glad Trapster saved you a ticket in Alligator Alley (of course the way the enforcement system works, that just means someone else got pulled over instead, but...).
