Trapster - report speed trap, red light camera, POLICE TRAP/presence in real time

Hi guys.
I saw this program on the news a minute ago and the concept is really cool. With the builtin GPS or WiFi (how can WiFi be accurate!!!!), a user presses an auto/self configured button to report each of the 4 kinds of trap. When a user is at the vicinity of a trap, a shrill voice (builtin/self recorded) will announce the type of trap to the user. The web site is at http://www.trapster.com. Every body must have thought of this concept before (me included) but thank Jebus finally some body did it!!!
I just sent my X7500 back to get the MicroDrive fixed so don't have anything to test it with. Would some body with an Athena please try this program and report any problems using it on this particular device?
It's still in beta and free right now. However, if it becomes a subscription service, I wouldn'd mind paying for it. Provided that the fee is reasonable like the $20/year subscription fee of www.schedulesdirect.org If it is more than $20/year, I will have second thoughts.
How much would you pay for it?

Woah, who got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning?...

In the US it's a good idea - very sketchy in the UK at the moment and not as good as the PocketGPS ones or those available in Cameraware. But then they are free! Again, critical mass needs to be reached - in the US with very little alternative, it might be, in the UK I'm not so sure.

I'm going to DL it and test it for ya bud. Thanks for the heads up with this s/w. And as "Con" said they're in the UK so they have other options we don't. I'll give feedbacks later on after I test it.

yea i just found this today. and did a search on here. jw if anyone has done this with the tmobile wing. i tried it but my phone said unsuccessful download. so i tried to download from my phone and it said its not pocket pc compatible. am i doing something wrong? sorry, kinda new to this forum.

Well after reading the how to on the website today, you have to actually dl it to the pc first and install it through active sync. I wasn't able to do it from work plus I didn't have my data cable with me in the office. I'll get around to it tonight tho and let you know how it goes.

i downloaded it to my pc, active syncd it, my phone screen popped up w/ a "yes" or "no". clicked yes. save to storage card. failed twice then said unsuccessful.

What a big disappointment!!! The concept is great but the Windows Mobile version of this program is still in *JUNK* status. It lacks many of most basic functions such as GPS configuration (port, baud, etc...) It installed alright on my Athena. However, when I ran it, it kept telling me "Can't get GPS location (87)..." while all of my other GPS apps (Google Maps, Live Search, CoPilot Live) that were running at the same time had no GPS problem at all. I'll wait for the next version before using it.
Edited: The GPS problem is most likely due to AP4...

I have downgraded my athena to ap3 and the gps problem is fixed. so the previous gps problem is because of ap4. with the athena, there's no good way to report redlight, etc... by key press as the athena's key assignment took precedent. However, the announcement is excellent though the volume is pretty low. I will have to re-record the alert messages.

We've now added the capability to connect to GPS directly via the COM port, in addition to the GPS Intermediate Driver (GPSID) method which is supposed to handle all that automatically. The problem with the direct COM port method is that the app (Google Maps, Live Search, CoPilot Live, and Trapster(R)) then "hogs" the GPS. This sort of sharing is what the GPSID was supposed to fix, but unfortunately in an attempt to block all apps that are not paid (like TeleNav etc.) carriers have gimped the config screens etc. I've seen COM port "splitter" programs but have not tested them personally.

I think this fixes your main objection. Please give it another look and let us know what you think.
We also added (some other stuff relevant to Windows):
- a mobile site. Just go to trapster.com/m and you can sign up, sign in, and download right there.
- "Ack" feature for Windows Mobile and "CarPC" (which means just run on your laptop) If you are a regular Trapster user in any US metro area (where trap density is high) you will definitely appreciate the "Ack" feature. No more ears ringing "police often hide here"... you just hit Ack (or mapped voice command) and it mutes until you encounter a new trap.
- support for WiFi location mode in Vista.

Thank you for such a cool app. Once I get used to it, it's pretty cool to use. I used it in July while I was visiting Florida and it did saved me from being pulled over while driving through the Alligator Alley. I'm using it every day now. Pretty cool.
For us Athena users, while the key mapping is not working well, I found that we can put the trapster folder on Start menu and have it opened in the background with all command icons showing. I'm using it with CoPilot. When I see an incident I need to report, I simply click on the [OK] button to minimize CoPilot and click on the appropriate icon to report the incident. Then I click on CoPilot again to open it up over the trapster menu. It's workable. Wish Athena has more buttons or Trapster is integrated with Microsoft Voice Command. It would be sooo cool to click a button to activate Microsoft Voice Command and say "Report Live Police" and have everything else done for us.

Hi sumtingwong, thanks for the kind words and glad Trapster saved you a ticket in Alligator Alley (of course the way the enforcement system works, that just means someone else got pulled over instead, but...).

Shift SD Card Vanishes Issue

Hello Folks !
I know that the issue of "vanishing" SD memory cards has been discussed in the XDA Forum before, and from those threads I also figured that there is a Hotfix patch available for this problem from Microsoft:

But Microsoft does not offer a download link for that fix
Instead they direct you to their "beg me for it" support site, where they state that owners of pre-installed Vista systems are only offered support on a "pay per support request" basis at the tune of >$60 per ticket :-(
All others are directed to go the website of their device's manufacturer.
But HTC doesn't offer any patches or fixes for the Shift, heck they don't even have an "updated driverrs" section there
But things have gotten that bad on my Shift by now that every time I switch SD cards (even w/o hibernation), I get the exact error the MS note describes and have to reboot Vista to get my SD card back
Can anyone here please(!!) send me that MS Hotfix.
Why do I have to pay to get a buggy SW fixed, simply because I am the legit owner of a Window's Vista version?
Whoever was so screwed up in the head to put Vista on that box in the first place?
If not for the missing drivers for XP (resolution changer and the like), I would have already kicked Vista of that darn thing myself.
Best would of course have been Linux, but the driver sittuation there is even worse (no touchpad, no SNAPVuE, ...)
Please, somebody help me here.

I have the same problem too!
I am using a 16G SD card from A data. In order to use it, I have to reboot the shift. Now I have purchased an external SD card reader, it then works better!

you said you have read all the thread concerning that fix. In one of them, you can download it.
BTW, the fix actually doesn't fix much, but you can still hope.

What are you talking about? We have 100% hardware support for the shift in Linux, everything is working, check my blog.

I've tried to install this hotfix and it prompts "This hotfix is not meant for your system". I have Vista Bussiness SP1.

Pleeeeaaase, I'm not a fool.
I've read through the posts of the guy who wrote most of the drivers for Linux and by his own admission things like touchscreen only work under Linux if Windoze initialized the device first (dual boot option).
Such clumsy work arounds might be fine for you, but I need this box for WORK, not play.
So I can't afford to have to mess around first to get certain functions running, and I need every single item on that box - be it touchpad, phone or screen rez change...
And anything that requires Dual Boot is unacceptable for work from the get go.
Imagine my project leaders wants me to perform a certain task on the fly and my reply is "OK Boss, just give me 5-10 minutes, I'll have for boot into Windoze for that first" :-(
Either it *all* works under Linux or otherwise I wasted a lot of money on an oversized paper weight.

Maybe they build that page for each location differently, but for my current locale (German province), I was exactly looking for that link (even using the "search" function), but could not find it.
If you could post that URL I would appreciate it.
Or maybe that page only works correctly if used with IE ???

You are in front of that guy... and yes, that was one of the caveats from the first versions of the touchscreen driver (looks like you haven't been updated since a looong time), now the initialization works correctly and dualboot is not needed anymore.

OK, I just tried again with another browser.
Now it seems to work OK and I'll wait for MS response.
The thing that worries me is that the web page said "for Vista Business SP2".
But I only got Service Pack 1 and I don't even think that there is an SP2 out yet for Vista.
I checked on the MS website just this weekend and they only listed SP1.
Am I wrong here about the MS Service Packs for Vista???

So you are telling me that SnapVuE, Touchscreen, Fingerprint Reader, Rez Change, Touchpad, Modem, WebCam, Audio and WM6 connectivity *all* work under Linux?
Be carefull what you claim here, because I am a Linux user & admin and have a "ready2install" SuSE 11.x distro right in front of me!

I suggest you to tone down, because pof is actually the only guy I know working on linux drivers for the shift. Talking about clumsy workaround is not the best way to thank him. Maybe you can use some smiley here.
May I also remind you that there are some heavyweight professionals on this forum, so claiming your professional problems as a bragging right might be a bit moot for most of us.

The fix is for pre-SP1. So it cannot install on SP1
ANd there is no SP2 for vista. You're reading probably something for XP

Well, I haven't tried it myself, but there are some guys in the comments of your "linux on shift" blog, that claim that there are severe problems with WiFi.
They say it won't work with WEP enabled networks.
Can you confirm this or is there a fix available?

May I suggest you tone it down yourself?
It was pof who jumped into this thread proclaiming very loudly that his drivers would make *all* under Linux work.
Emphasis on all on his own part.
So if he makes a claim which proofs to be false, then I would call that very unprofessional indeed (not that I allege such at this point, but that is why I listed all the [many] devices his claim would include).
I don't know about the environment in which the "heavyweights" you mention in this forum work, but in my world making a claim like that would get me fired if it proofed to be untrue.
And I'm talking about the kind of projects here where such news travels very fast - and I did mention that I use my Shift for work.
Thus my livelyhood depends on my systems functioning 100% (not 95% or 99%).
And despite me being an avert Linux user myself, I'm not one of those folks who believe I have to get all my stuff for free, thus if I do not find that someone willing to write drivers for free obliges me to be gratefull beyond agony (should they still not work as advertised).
Quite the opposite. I'm among the first willing to pay for my SW as long as it works. I did not choose Linux (for my PC) because it is "free", as screwing up on the job because of a failing System would cost me a lot more than simply paying for a professional operating system.
So if something does not work right (like having to boot into Windows first before I can start working under Linux), I do call it "clumsy" - because that is what it is!
If pof wants to be paid for his drivers, he can PM me about that proposal.
But in any case I'll demand for that stuff to work 100% or else I call it what it is.
Because my boss would call me far worse if I'd screw up because I e.g. couldn't access my info because my HTC Shift went bye bye on the job.

PS thaihugo, the tone of your reply already convinced me to stick with Windoze on the Shift.
Because as lousy as Vista works on the HTC, at least there I do have "bragging rights" (as you call it) to demand working SW - because I paid for it.
That's a lot better than trying to get some freebie working and if it ain't working to be told "hey, what do you want? You got it for free!"

[WARNING] To all CoPilot users

Dear CoPilot users,
Over the last month I have been having a bit of a battle with the makers of CoPilot 8, ALK, with regards to my license which I purchased in early 2010.
Like many of you here, I'm a bit of a compulsive phone updater, be it new windows builds, android or this new android NAND stuff.
Anyway, every time I flashed a ROM, I'd have to reactivate Co-Pilot over the internet. No problem. However, one day, it stopped working, saying that my code was invalid!! Much to my horror, I sent ALK an e-mail asking what had happened. Here was my response.

Well, I didn't realise I could only activate so many times before the product was no longer mine. So I did some fishing through my T&C's for CoPilot 8 and there is no actual figure to indicate what "the maximum permitted activation limit for a product" is.
So I replied with an e-mail to that effect, saying that there is nothing in black and white for me to have known this. A month later they finally got back to me and said that I can now reactivate my code.
Now - I can understand what's happened. From their server's point of view, lots of people could be using my code on a large number of devices. So how do you get around this?
Well, every time you go to flash a new ROM, **MAKE SURE YOU DEACTIVATE YOUR LICENSE FIRST**!!
In settings (assuming you have show all settings selected), you will see a license button. Select your map in the list of things and press deactivate.
If you do this then you will be okay. But I suspect ALK will be updating their T&C to prevent this from occurring again.
Anyway, I hope that saves some of you from some potential trouble in the future.

why dont you backup & restore using titanium?

as far as im aware the activation code is linked to your phones IMEI, so it doesnt matter how many times you change your build, (with the same os) if restoring from backup

this is common practice with drm'd software.
the solution is just not to use it.

In The windows ver .. there is a file called : licp8.dat
That keeps your lic Info ...
Wonder if there is one for thr Android ???

Requirements:
- A *LEGAL* copy of CoPilot 8 for Windows Mobile and the license key
- The latest version of CoPilot 8 for Android (works in Froyo now) Link to ALK Web Site
I bought it about 8 months ago for my HD2, for Windows Mobile 6.5. Great piece of software. I contacted ALK to ask if I could transfer between OS's and they said no, it wouldn't work! It also clearly states on their web site that transfers don't work:

So being stubborn, I thought I'd take my own license from WinMo and deactivate it, stick it into Android and needless to say - it works and I have a fully legal copy of CoPilot 8 running on my Android Froyo device. Those cheeky beggers at ALK!!!
So how to get it working:
•Make sure you still have CoPilot installed under Windows Mobile and activated;
•Launch CoPilot. Go to the Menu|Settings|Licensing (NOTE: If you can't see this, find "More Settings" and select that first to show Licensing);
•Select your Map Region from the list (Mine was UK and Ireland), then press "Deactivate";
•CoPilot will now shut down;
•Boot into Android and using an installer, install the APK file which is in the requirements section at the top of the page or here;
•Open CoPilot from the Menu and it will ask for your license info. Enter this as you did when you first bought CoPilot (usually a username and password);
•Bada Bing. That should be it, all working!
Just to clarify one further time, this is only for legally purchased licenses. No questions about dodgy software please. Thank you.

Is JDB PocketShield no longer supporting Windows Mobile?

I love this program. It can be configured in so many ways and the options are so easy and clear to understand.
I have Protection Edition Version 3.7.0.8 thats newer then the 3.7.0.7 they are selling on there websight at http://www.pocketshield.net/activate.aspx for a sale price of $5.
I think they stopped supporting it. Its a real bummer for me that I can not activate because I had to hard reset again and pocket shield is not liking my original activation code and email. They have not responded to my many emails I sent using the program itself and the contact page on there websight and my yahoo account too. I see they are selling it for only $5 now. I cant find a crack or keygen so I will soon be forced to buy it again. Kind of makes me mad.
I have tried many many other screen lock programs but none come close to pocket shield. They just dont cover all possible situations like PS does.
Does any one have any info on there current standing with us windows mobile users? Have they totally dropped the ball? It would be nice if they would put out a keygen or free version because it seems like they are abandoning us.

It was months ago that I had the problem of them not responding. Today I tried one last time sending them an email about an activation problem. Purposely leaving out any further data. They responded fast asking what program. I re sent my original text with my email and registration code and they responded fast saying I should re try registration now. I did and it worked. I will never know what happened to cause a no response but now I am happy again they have not abandoned us. Thank you pocket shield.

Dude, I was wondering should I buy this software or not, cuz using the full trial verison, got me very high immpresions about PS 3.7.0.7 . If any other simillar program got near PS that was without a doubt S2U2 latest version, but not close enough. The latest S2U2 version (I think its 2.43 if I'm correct) it is not that battery hungry like previous versions, it is much more stable than any other previous versions of S2U2 and it is not eating RAM like previous versions did.
About PocketShield, I did a lots of reading and researching is it good, is it battery friendly, etc. Then I got the trial version of 3.7.0.7 and cuz in those 14 trial period days I didn't have that much time to watch the battery respond to this program. So I will ask you for a little feedback and help with this program:
1. Is it a battery friendly program?
2. Is it a RAM friendly program?
3. What is your personal experiance with using it?
4. Where did you get version 3.7.0.8? When I d/l form their site, it said 3.7.0.7 , but when I install it, it says 3.7.0.6.
If you used S2U2 2.43 you can make a comparassion with that with answering my questions. I have Samsung Omnia i900 with custom light rom WM6.5.3

Yes in fact your battery will last longer with it.

I dont know. I had not noticed any problems here.

Most of the time its fine but every 5 months or so it Slows the phone down at times reinstalling it is the only thing I found to get it back to normal.

S2U2 does not have near as may options and is not as capable. Once you set up PS to do exactly what you want when you want you will be willing to pay any price for it. It truely does cover all situations and will not let you down.

Well, I came across this page as I found myself in the same situation as above. I recently had to re-install PocketShield v3.7.0.8 after flashing my HTC HD2 to the latest CrossbowHD2 Rom, and realised that I could no longer register my purchased software online. I believe that there's either a count on the number of times you are allowed to use the PIN code for activation, or how many times it is used within a time period before it gets deactivated permanently by JDB.
So like travissand, I sent email after email to JDB and got no response. It's very frustrating because this is the only software I've purchased and installed on my Windows Mobile phone that requires online activation. To add insult to injury, I didn't get it at the current discounted price either.
Driven to desperation, I started searching online for hacks or cracks for this program, none of them worked. Fortunately in the process, I learnt enough to finally figured out what the program activation code checks for. Since I have a backup of my previous phone including it's registry, I was able to modify the necessary registry keys to finally get my new reinstalled PocketShield v3.7.0.8 activated and out of trial/bug mode offline, without requiring server authentication.
I know it only costs $5 to get a new license (assuming they are still handing those out) but I don't really feel like paying another dime when I legitimately paid for and did not pirate the software, Several Windows Mobile developers are simply giving away their previously commercial software since WM5/6 is considered a legacy system. I also hate it that when (not if) JDB decides to take their authentication server offline, you not only can't re-install and activate their software anymore, neither can you switch skins. FYI, you MUST be online to download the skins catalog and to install a skin, even if it was one that you had previously downloaded and installed before. As I mentioned, this is the only Windows Mobile program that I own which has this ridiculous requirement.
[Edit] Don't bother asking me for the Windows Mobile registry keys that the program checks or my license key, PIN or email. This is not just because I don't wish to pirate the program, but also because I believe the activation is hardware specific and wouldn't work on another device... a nasty form of copy protection. Urgh!

LOL of course you need to activate it. Windows is not free, you need to pay for it.
I'm not sure how you managed to install Windows 8 without a key, Windows 8 will NOT install if you don't enter a key during installation (unless you use a workaround), which suggests you may be using an illegal copy of Windows, though this is only one possible situations, so I'm not accusing you.
If you don't activate after 30 days:
1 - “Windows is not activated” error text is shown in Computer properties.
2 - Activation Key Watermark will appear on top of everything (all games, apps, videos) just like a screen sticker.
3 - Full screen notification Windows asking you to activate.

First of all windows 8 wnt have 30 days evaluation period.and
Second if u knw some bat coding u can use dism tool for serivicing windows 8 to force insert key during boot installation.

My buddy gave me his iso and installation key. Using the current build I'm on, it said that to many computers were using the key. If I clean install his iso, and use his installation key, will I be activated?

Nope, you can only use the key on one computer. You'll need to buy a new key. It's only $14.99 (until the end of January) so why even bother trying to pirate it?

I think people like this should do readings often. They're used with 'warez' and couldn't identify the paradox and others.
Even if god have the iso and installation key, it's still 1 key 1 consumer.
