Wrong Pattern after Android backup restore - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I restored my device from a backup I had and now when I put in my pattern it says wrong pattern... Do I have any options besides restoring (which would suckkk)

I've read around that if you restore your back up with an existing PIN/PW, it will cause your phone to be locked out permanently. So you have to restart all over again. I'm not sure if it's been fixed.

Yeah it seems to be a known issue. You have to remove your PIN/PW before backing up.

It's a stickied thread people http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3245070

If only people would read the stickied OPs these days. There's nothing you can do at this point besides starting over, and taking this as a learning experience.

Thanks everyone, hard lesson to learn but I have no choice.

There could be a work around for this. See step #4 of the rooting guide:

Or that, but its better to just start over sometimes. I made this mistake before it was a stickied OP (right after TWRP was released for the 6P), and I started over just fine.

It was actually a blessing in disguise. The main reason I was restoring was after I messed with some things to fix my battery draining issues. After the restore my battery issues are gone. very annoying and I lost a lot of sleep over it but it was a good thing . Thanks everyone

I'm a noob, so sorry in advance...

I just rooted my phone (thank you xda for making it super easy!) however, now I'm a little freaked out about what I've done.
I basically rooted so that my phone is speedier. I have no idea, in the area of ROMs or customizing, what else rooting can do. I'm not asking for help in doing those things, because like I said, I just want my phone to be speedy.
But now I'm a tad worried (due to a "beware" response I received on another forum) that I've opened up a portal for someone to access my accounts, contacts, etc. through apps on the phone. Sorry if I sound like a complete idiot, but in this arena, I suppose I am!
I just want to make sure that having the Super User permissions that I didn't just open an security threat that I'm not equipped to deal with.
Thanks for any help or suggestions (even if your suggestion is to unroot). Like I said, please go easy on me...I have no idea what I'm doing, lol.
i dont think rooting/superuser give any access to threats that you were not already exposed to.
someone please correct me if im wrong.
as far as what to do now with root, there is a sticky here in general with things to do with root. we are wating for Roms

You are correct.
Ignore the ignorant.
You have root = you have power. You control what your phone does. Don't download apps asking for permissions they should not need... you asked a good question so Im not worried about you being an idiot... just dont be stupid.
That said, take advantage of root. I put my suggestions in the sticky at the top.
Thank you. I will be sure to read the sticky...
I don't think I'm an idiot, just not very savvy with Android. Yet.
I am very diligent as far as doing my research, but this is a tough subject as 1/2 the information I find says one thing, and the other 1/2 contradicts it.
I'm truly not ignorant, or at least I'm attempting not to be, as I have read up on this. I just don't know what to do with the conflicting information.
root does not inherently open you to security threats.
but you said you 'rooted' to make the phone speedier, so did you just root, which has really no effect on speed or did you do a lag fix? the lag fixes won't cause a security problem, but from what i understand, ext2 will corrupt over time so that's not 'safe'. i think some of the lag fixes check for this, but there are so many now, i stopped keeping up on them.
if you just did root and remove some stock bloat, then don't worry. just actually read everything you do from the dev community and apps, and ask questions if you are unsure and you should be fine. definitely check out the sticky, though. lots of great stuff there.

I did do the lag fix too, but I don't think it was the ext2 one. I could be wrong though (and probably am). I found it here, RyanZa's One Click Lag Fix APK.
So you think it's something I should uninstall now, or just be aware of the issues with it for the future? (Sorry, again, if that's a ridiculous question. I honestly just thought that was part of rooting.)

I wasn't calling you ignorant at all. I was calling the people that were telling you that you would be open to your data being compromised. Root just gives you the control over your phone. Not others.

that's what i figured. that's what people were 'warning' about. there are a couple versions of the lag fix.
if it's this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760267
then i think you'll be fine. i think as long as the one you are using runs e2fsck on boot, you should be fine.

Ya rooting(gaining root access) really has nothing much to do with making the phone speedy especially on Vibrant right now. An average user shouldn't even feel the need to root the phone.
The article that you have seen is most likely to clear the misconception of rooting is necessary for all Android phones.
I used the one that the link ends in 760571 (sorry, since I'm a noob I'm not able to post links yet)
I think they are the same, just a different thread?

I'm totally the average user but I knew I had to root to speed things up a bit with the lag fix. I would unroot and undo the lag fix, since I'm obviously in WAY over my head (lol), but I'm just as scared to do that as I was to root in the first place!

[GUIDE] How to fix a softbrick

Your phone softbricked, Here is how to fix it!
1. if you are on 1.8.3, download the following file
http://www.mediafire.com/?xm487o3ljjhdmh7 (thank unknown_ for it)
2. creat a folder and put the file in it.
3 download fastboot from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138092
4. put fastboot on the same folder you created on step 2
4.1 enter fastboot on your phone
(reboot your phone while holding volume down, when fastboot appear on screen press up)
4.2 open a console in that folder (windows users hold left shift and right click, the click on the pull up menu on start command right here)
6 then type. fastboot flash boot CG56.img
7 for good messure type fastboot -w (this will whipe your data, sometimes it wont boot your phone unless you wipe data)
8. fastboot reboot
if you are on 2.3.4 you can find the boot.img in the same thread as fastboot.
Thanks for this, I know a few will need it.
Thanks for fixing this kholk, I knew you could do it!

the one person that it worked for was trolling yall, this will not work. this is made iwth an older, way older 3 versions behind 1.8.3 kernel source, this woudnt work if you lit it on fire. [edit] kholks kernel that is.
but yes, no problems, i figure a how to guide on how to fix it would be a nice thing, you see even tho yall hate me, im gonna SHARE!
If kholk really did post a bogus kernel he should be **** kicked. Not to mention, perma banned from XDA-DEV.

Unless there is some mysterious solution none of us have yet discovered, it doesn't work. Shockingly similar to his OC module and kexec module. Fortunately, neither of the first two caused people to softbrick their phones

i dont think he posted a bogus kernel, he just posted a kernel using a really really old kernel source, all you little kholk worshippers (not saying you are) when running get it.

Nope not attempting to Troll at all, I feel his title is though. I don't know kholk at all but he seems to know his stuff especially when it comes to the Tegra2 platform. He does seem to be poor at is full instructions or descriptions but it is also listed as version 0.1, to me thats not even Beta yet. So although it may not work right now for all we know at this point there could be a simple fix.
My point was simply don't attack someone because you rushed in to something without fully understanding or with the idea that it will work 100% when no claim was made to that. Offering to help others who made the same mistake is fine & admirable but does it have to come with sarcasm and veiled insults?

Holy hell guys.... Anyone who's already tried to flash this without a FULL understanding of what it is/does - and HOW to correctly install it deserves the soft-brick they got... You chose to flash something untested and unverified. Live with the consequences! Its funny to sit back and watch people JUMP and claw at this stuff to be the first person to have it and get it working - then piss and moan when something doesnt work. I find it hilarious actually lol. The only person to blame is yourself for flashing blindly

I was probably the 2nd person to flash this... I didn't piss & moan.. I was understandably anxious when my phone soft bricked, but I fully understood the risk. But someone had to be the first, someone had to test it... I didn't go bashing Kholk on his own thread, I asked questions of what to do, and thanked the one who directed me to the CG56.img file. After that I again questioned to see if anyone had successfully flashed the kernel. I have since requested a moderator temporarily close the thread until the Dev can update and/or correct the OP, or answer questions posted on his thread.
How many views does it take for thread to be locked? (Hint: it's over 9000)
The download link is down, Can someone kindly post another.
Cheers
Two questions from a complete idiot (me) if you please.
1. What is Soft Brick? I mean, what is the state of phone called Soft Brick?
I understand the Hard Brick (RIP state) is the phone totally unbootable.
2. The above procedure works only for a unlocked boot loader or with the locked also?

problems doing a factory reset after magldr installed

I took on the project to install wp7 and dual boot android. Installing magldr and wp7 went without any problems but I made the mistake of switching out the sd cards. Now it goes to the sd card not working screen and gives me the option to turn off. I performed a hard reset holding the up and down along with power. The reset took less than a second before it said it was complete and still boots to the sd card not working screen. I would like to do a hard reset through magldr but am not sure how because it just boots to the 123456 go go go screen and boots into wp7. Any insight would be great. I have been searching but have not been able to come up with anything. Thanks
Aaah! What a great new ROM from Stinkybudz called PROBLEMS DOING A FACTORY RESET! Thanks you man, flashing it now!
oops... what is that? Its not a rom? Why is it in a rom section then? Because of some noob is spamming this forum with his stupid questions?

Flash original WP6.5 Rom from the HTC website, by Switching the phone off, when it off hold the vol down button + power button.
You will see the tri color screen (bootloader) and from there plug in USB and flash 6.5 rom or use SD card method (format sd to FAT32 and rename to leoimg.nbh).

hey thanks for the good info douch bag. why dont you go jump off a bridge. Sometimes people make mistakes and post in the wrong forum. People like you are useless to the community and worse than a noob trying to get everything figured out.
Don't know if it can help but just after first splash screen you can do the same as for wm6.5 ie VOL- for flash and VOL-/VOL+ at the same time to have a menu checksum/factory reset but this time it will be for WP7 using spl provided by magldr.
happened to me before, I had an sd card I was playing with. Partitioning it for android and so. But then I headed off for my work, took my phone and totally forgot my sd card was still in the pc, lol.
So i thought, just buy a replacement sd card real quick, but wp7 said that the sd card was not compatible. It was a sandisk, so I bought another one, wich also gave the same message. So I couldn't use my phone that day.
In the end, when I came home, i reinserted the sd card i left in my pc and voila, it worked and all the data, games, music and other stuff were still there.
So, just insert your old sd card in it and then boot into wp7 again and do a reset.
i got it figured out. I just needed to get to the magldr boot options by holding down the power button until it showed up. I just reflashed and it is all good now. Thanks for the help

Now it turned out to be chaos with thousands of totally pointles posts, repeated questions from lazy people who are not able to search and read and totally pointless threads like this one.
Developers are leaving, noobs are multiplying. Owners of this forum are aware of this and trying to fight this problem, but it seems, that they are loosing the battle.
Its very hard to find anything within all the thanks, pointless debates and questions from people who think that this is technical support. You just made it worse a little. I have never believed developers ran away, just because of the noobs, but more because of some rivalty. Besides, fresh new developers are here, like yukixda.
You should apply for a moderator function and ban all of the people you dislike. period.

well i'm in big trouble it looks like, i followed this video into a huge mess where now my phone won't load past the white AT&T screen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H_gBP5Dd_8
phone was rooted fine, DLed goomanager, followed the instructions and then in the recovery screen i chose "power off" thinking i could just turn it back on
WRONG
I followed it perfectly up to 3:00, and then i chose the reboot/power off options. And bricked.....not really sure how that happened, but help would be greatly appreciated.

I've done this before... I didn't do anything wrong, stuff just happens. Can you boot into recovery? Try a wipe if you can. If not, you'll just have to restore with Odin.

Simple don't follow a bloody video. Read and learn about what your doing before you do it. Most videos are out dated and don't give you the needed info incase something goes wrong.
Also a heads up. Asking for help fast does no good as this is not a support forum.

That was a little harsh.
Video's are IMO, a good idea. If you don't know what you're doing, then follow instructions. So, the OP did good IMO.
That video is only a couple weeks old and is for the Galaxy S4.
I didn't watch it (no sound card) but it doesn't matter now.
OP, what does happen when you press the volume up + power + home button to get into the recovery?
Did you try pulling the battery for 30+ seconds yet?
You should not be seeing a white AT&T screen at any time. You should be booting into recovery, where you will then flash a new ROM.
Well, I mean it shouldn't have killed your current ROM. But that could be a separate issue.
If you can get into recovery, then just toss a ROM onto your external SD card if you have one.
If not, then use ADB push to push a ROM onto your internal SD where you can then flash it.
Or, Odin back to stock.

If not, then use ADB push to push a ROM onto your internal SD where you can then flash it.
Or, Odin back to stock.

To be honest videos are a bad way to learn to flash a device. This thread is great example as to why. Had he not rushed and learned what he was doing first we would not be here

Telling people to read in this forum is futile. It only gets you called names like do*che and d*ck. Kenny knows, he had to clean up a response to my post telling someone they needed to do some reading. It's sickening how lazy people are these days. But it's the truth. You won't learn anything by being spoon fed the info. Sometimes the best answer to give someone is to just read. This isn't a support center. It's a development forum. People need to learn the basics on their own. Zelendel said it best in his legendary post. And if I could find it right now I would link to it.
And if you're gonna follow a video, try one that was made by someone like AdamOutler, not some rando with a random website.

Write Protection unexpectedly restored after 4.4.4 update. Root survived

Yesterday I updated to 4.4.4 (root still works, SuperSU survival enabled)
The problem is that Xposed Mod doesn't work anymore. It looks like write protection reenabled after update (checked it via PC and adb shell command)
Is there a way to fix that?

The write protection? Not at this time, unless you have an unlocked bootloader. Perhaps someone will come up with an exploit that will turn write protection off on 4.4.4, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I have an unlocked Developer Edition on 4.4.4 with root and WP off, but on my day-to-day Maxx, I'm still at 4.4 with root and WP off and I've frozen MotorolaOTA and Updater to prevent any OTA's from sneaking in.

I'm in the same situation. If you install/update xposed, then cancel the reboot and choose soft reboot, xposed will work. It took several attempts the first time for it to take, but eventually did. The down side is every time your phone shuts off or reboots, you have to reinstall and soft boot. Also, and this may be only me, but about one a day every app crashes at once and forces me to reboot and reinstall xposed. I'm assuming it's because of the framework not being properly written to the system. It's a pain in the butt, but xposed is worth it to me, so I've been dealing with it. Good luck
Wow we really needed a new thread about this. It had been discussed at length already. Did you not read any other posts in this forum.

Search is your friend - discussed over and over in every other thread about 4.4.4.
I keep getting an error when doing the official update.. Anyone had the same issue?

i havent tried again. think SU may be blocking it? or safestrap is interfering? i have no idea. not really concerned about it.

Had similar problem. I reflashed 'boot' or 'recovery' (don't remember) via fastboot and it helped.
You can check update log in order to determine exact reason

Or just ignore it? It's not like this is a highly active device forum that these are getting in the way of something important.
Not you but the general attitude in this device's forums lately are sad. Yes people ask the same questions a lot, yes it's annoying for those of us that read everything, however you can't assume that everyone reads every post in every thread. It's very easy to just chuckle at the repeat offenders and move along. Beating people down because they asked a question that was already answered on page 45 of 79 in another thread is just as lazy as them not looking for the answer to begin with.

No it is not and if you don't like the attitude of the devs in this forum then feel free to step up and make your own exploits.
Rule number 1 of the forum rules sticky is "search before posting". It is very appropriate to call someone out when they blatantly disregard those rules.
Don't get butthurt on someone for knowing the rules and trying to cut clutter.

Could not have proven my point better, thank you.
If anyone is "butthurt" it appears to be you. What exploits have you made by the way? Everyone has their place in the forums whether they be noob end-users or developers who create great things from virtually nothing. Remember the Golden Rule and things will be much better off.

Take a look around this community and then ask me what I've done for it again. It is users like you that have blatant disregard for rules and feel entitled that have made most of us apprehensive about helping anyone anymore.

If you want to flex your dev muscles please look around for what I've done as well. This isn't a contest. Please tell me where I've been entitled and/or shown a "blatant disregard for rules". You sir have some serious anger issues.

Anger? No I'm not angry, i'm simply defending someone that you attacked for pointing out the rules. Just like @NWKENT @Caseyk621 @bigv5150 @Jaocagomez would
Furthermore i don't care what you have done for the galaxy community or the roms you made for their devices. We are talking here.
Anyway your argument is invalid and without basis. Attempting to show this to you is likened to speaking with a brick wall.

What does forum readership numbers have to do with posting integrity? Your crassness we do not need here.

Hey if you would rather have "devs" bashing people for asking questions than people simply answering questions or ignoring duplicate questions, so be it.
