I just rooted my phone (thank you xda for making it super easy!) however, now I'm a little freaked out about what I've done.
I basically rooted so that my phone is speedier. I have no idea, in the area of ROMs or customizing, what else rooting can do. I'm not asking for help in doing those things, because like I said, I just want my phone to be speedy.
But now I'm a tad worried (due to a "beware" response I received on another forum) that I've opened up a portal for someone to access my accounts, contacts, etc. through apps on the phone. Sorry if I sound like a complete idiot, but in this arena, I suppose I am!
I just want to make sure that having the Super User permissions that I didn't just open an security threat that I'm not equipped to deal with.
Thanks for any help or suggestions (even if your suggestion is to unroot). Like I said, please go easy on me...I have no idea what I'm doing, lol.
i dont think rooting/superuser give any access to threats that you were not already exposed to.
someone please correct me if im wrong.
as far as what to do now with root, there is a sticky here in general with things to do with root. we are wating for Roms

You are correct.
Ignore the ignorant.
You have root = you have power. You control what your phone does. Don't download apps asking for permissions they should not need... you asked a good question so Im not worried about you being an idiot... just dont be stupid.
That said, take advantage of root. I put my suggestions in the sticky at the top.
Thank you. I will be sure to read the sticky...
I don't think I'm an idiot, just not very savvy with Android. Yet.
I am very diligent as far as doing my research, but this is a tough subject as 1/2 the information I find says one thing, and the other 1/2 contradicts it.
I'm truly not ignorant, or at least I'm attempting not to be, as I have read up on this. I just don't know what to do with the conflicting information.
root does not inherently open you to security threats.
but you said you 'rooted' to make the phone speedier, so did you just root, which has really no effect on speed or did you do a lag fix? the lag fixes won't cause a security problem, but from what i understand, ext2 will corrupt over time so that's not 'safe'. i think some of the lag fixes check for this, but there are so many now, i stopped keeping up on them.
if you just did root and remove some stock bloat, then don't worry. just actually read everything you do from the dev community and apps, and ask questions if you are unsure and you should be fine. definitely check out the sticky, though. lots of great stuff there.

I did do the lag fix too, but I don't think it was the ext2 one. I could be wrong though (and probably am). I found it here, RyanZa's One Click Lag Fix APK.
So you think it's something I should uninstall now, or just be aware of the issues with it for the future? (Sorry, again, if that's a ridiculous question. I honestly just thought that was part of rooting.)

I wasn't calling you ignorant at all. I was calling the people that were telling you that you would be open to your data being compromised. Root just gives you the control over your phone. Not others.

that's what i figured. that's what people were 'warning' about. there are a couple versions of the lag fix.
if it's this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760267
then i think you'll be fine. i think as long as the one you are using runs e2fsck on boot, you should be fine.

Ya rooting(gaining root access) really has nothing much to do with making the phone speedy especially on Vibrant right now. An average user shouldn't even feel the need to root the phone.
The article that you have seen is most likely to clear the misconception of rooting is necessary for all Android phones.
I used the one that the link ends in 760571 (sorry, since I'm a noob I'm not able to post links yet)
I think they are the same, just a different thread?

I'm totally the average user but I knew I had to root to speed things up a bit with the lag fix. I would unroot and undo the lag fix, since I'm obviously in WAY over my head (lol), but I'm just as scared to do that as I was to root in the first place!

Forum rules, please read!
There seems to be a significant amount of animosity of late in the Android related forums. I'm not certain as to why this is, nor do I want to hear any reason for justification; what I do know is that it is unacceptable.
XDA is about bringing together folks who have similar passions about mobile technology. As the forum is accessed worldwide, you will encounter all types of folks from different walks of life; some of these folks will be extremely technical, others not. In all cases, it is the responsibility of all members to remain respectful of one another. We all have different opinions, we do not all have the same level of knowledge, and some folks are looking to feel like they are learning while trying to contribute.
Show maturity and professionalism by responding with helpful and constructive information. There is absolutely no reason to respond in a rude tone or to make someone feel stupid ... it is not constructive and serves no purpose.
I would remind members that the best moderation is self-moderation.

You have already offended some. Please note that not all who asks to root Froyo updated their phone from OTA or RUU, some got their phone with the Froyo firmware already in it. So please watch before you speak. Also, not all people knows about how this things works. Most doesn't even care what their phones are and will update should an update is available believing their device will make it super. Then they'll just stumble on a forum unintentionally and started knowing stuffs like these and start loving and craving to try, but may be too late. People asking these questions should only be answered Yes or No, no side comments if it's bad to hear. Anyways, they are not pushing you, as in you to do it for them. If you say NO, then they won't bother you, will they?

I agree that the people that bought the phone with 2.2 are not to blame about no knowing about it, but they are to be blamed about not reading before whining on the forum

There shold be no one to blame in the first place because nobody committed a mistake for asking to root their phone after update. It's not a mistake, it's just that people tend to play with their phone, get more features after root, but it's not a mistake. Mistake here is to insult poor ignorant people.

No, the fact that you do something (like updating 2.2.1) without knowing the implications is a mistake, and you deserve what`s coming to you.
If you go around in life like "hurr durr a buttonz, lets push it" you are eventually gonna get burned. It doesn't take long to go around asking on Google or reading on a forum, or asking a friend what happens when you press that button. Maybe you will not find out exactly what happens when you push the button, maybe you`ll only know that starts a flame, you are responsible for getting burned. And you shouldn`t cry afterward if the injuries hurt. This example can be extended in every aspect of life and can be summarized like this THINK before you act! Some obviously don`t.
I`m not going to argue anymore, this is my final post about this subject.

So when I woke up this morning, I noticed that my Xoom was indicating a new update was available for download and install. I am assuming that this would be a bad thing for me to do, since I am rooted with a Tiamat Moray ROM installed.
Correct, as in I should not install updates as they probably wouldn't be compatible with the custom ROMs?
I have seen several posts in other areas (devices) on how to stop this, but there was a different method for each without any real info on whether it worked or not.
Can anyone tell me how to stop the OTA on a Rooted Xoom? Also, should I be concerned about this update? Would it even install if I let it, and what might it jack up?
I know that is a lot of questions, but anything you can provide help with would be appreciated. Thanks
Update will fail.
No harm should be done.

My friend there are like a dozen threads for this also why dont you try checking the Tiamat thread... That would be the best place for an answer to how to stop something with their rom....
What playya is trying to say it's that he doesn't give a rats ass about what you're asking, but he thought it was worthwhile to spend the time answering your query just to tell you that.
It's really simple to get rid of the update nag. Just download the applicable modified build.prop file ( if you can find the right one...), and be mystified as it stops the annoying update pop-up and ****s up other things, like Swype.
-But don't be a total loser by asking about it.
LOL, I don't mind being told to "do my own search" and yes I did watch tbe noob video, but in this case I did do a search first as I stated in my original post. But the information I saw was all over the place, without any definitive answers. So instead of causing an issue with my device by trying each and every one of them, I figured I would ask the expireinced as to which choice was right.
Thank you for the advice Psychokitty. I had seen several people mention the build.prop suggestion, it just didn't seem like the ones I read were having a lot of success with it. I will relook at that option, and check the "Tiamat" thread again to see if there is a build.prop for my version.
I read this forum twice a day, and I still don't get a clear answer to half the things I'm unsure about. Everyone's setup is different, so if you don't know enough to ask really specific questions about what you have working in the way of mods before adding another one, then you end up screwed. If you ask anything general, people become assholes. Of course, if you knew the specifics to ask, you probably would already know the answer to the question yourself.
That's the part some of these clowns don't seem to get.
Yesterday I updated to 4.4.4 (root still works, SuperSU survival enabled)
The problem is that Xposed Mod doesn't work anymore. It looks like write protection reenabled after update (checked it via PC and adb shell command)
Is there a way to fix that?

The write protection? Not at this time, unless you have an unlocked bootloader. Perhaps someone will come up with an exploit that will turn write protection off on 4.4.4, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I have an unlocked Developer Edition on 4.4.4 with root and WP off, but on my day-to-day Maxx, I'm still at 4.4 with root and WP off and I've frozen MotorolaOTA and Updater to prevent any OTA's from sneaking in.

I'm in the same situation. If you install/update xposed, then cancel the reboot and choose soft reboot, xposed will work. It took several attempts the first time for it to take, but eventually did. The down side is every time your phone shuts off or reboots, you have to reinstall and soft boot. Also, and this may be only me, but about one a day every app crashes at once and forces me to reboot and reinstall xposed. I'm assuming it's because of the framework not being properly written to the system. It's a pain in the butt, but xposed is worth it to me, so I've been dealing with it. Good luck

Not you but the general attitude in this device's forums lately are sad. Yes people ask the same questions a lot, yes it's annoying for those of us that read everything, however you can't assume that everyone reads every post in every thread. It's very easy to just chuckle at the repeat offenders and move along. Beating people down because they asked a question that was already answered on page 45 of 79 in another thread is just as lazy as them not looking for the answer to begin with.

No it is not and if you don't like the attitude of the devs in this forum then feel free to step up and make your own exploits.

This video was debunked a long time ago in the bounty thread.

Phfftttt. I was crying the river.
I have it temporarily rooted, it loses root upon reboot, please wait until I can get a script working. I have been granted temporary root via camera. It grants temporary root via USB Debugging turned on with MTP and all that turned off. I have been able to remove VZW Bloatware... no luck on bootloader yet though.

If what you claim is true you should contact jdevs and take his help... I am sure, he can work his magic even with temp root... I doubt it though... Cuz u can't remove bloatware with temp root... So either u don't have it or u have permanent root! But again doubt that! No offence though..

And that he has 4 posts and 3 thanks, no images, no videos, no other information other than "I rooted it temporarily".
Hey guess what, I rooted this phone a month ago. I work for VZW as a system / software security expert and have access to their methods and scripts for bypassing their software security measures. See, anyone can post up anything for attention.

Just because someone has 4 posts, and not known DOES NOT mean they are not capable of rooting a device. You are so quick to shoot someone down, if it is a fake, let it be, we don't need to here this comment every time someone claims to have found something... This forum is a discussion for who those who are interested in experimenting with their devices, no need for trolling just because someone has 4 posts and hasn't posted screenshots. If I were to discover a potential rooting vulnerability, I would not be posting screenshots, and I definitely wouldn't have the posts.

So a few things:
1. You have no way knowing if its true or not yet.
2. Didn't you drop the Turbo? Why are you even here if you don't have the Turbo anymore other than to make such trollish comments?
3. This won't be the first time someone who doesn't live on a forum accomplishes something like this.

So a few replies:
1. Deep down, yes we do. Whether you want to admit to the truth is another story.
2. Maybe get your facts straight on my business - let me enlighten you: Never had the Turbo. I'm smart enough to not buy a phone that is so locked down when I want a phone with root and/or an unlocked bootloader. If (not when) that ever happens I'll consider getting it, but chances are the '15 models are going to be out by then and the Turbo will be considered "an older phone". Right now I'm just following along on the (lack of) progress with rooting and keeping everyone in check with reality (or "trolling", if that's how you want to put it).
3. Unrelated since it isn't happening with this guy. I'd bet money he goes away just like the "VZW security rep" did in the bounty thread. I'd give you the link to his area in that thread if you don't remember him, but I'm not sifting through all the bs posted over there to find the exact location.

Regarding number 2, I posed it as a question so no need to get my "facts" straight.

Now you know the truth, in case it comes up again why I'm still floating through these (ridiculous) root / bounty threads.

Lol, maybe, but seems an appropriate response for someone going on a rant, wanting really hard to believe that this guy ACTUALLY temp rooted this phone after I called the "rooter" out on his bs. Screenshots, images, pics of the whole phone, something would be better than just "Hey guess what, I rooted it."
Don't get me wrong, I'm not voting against the phone being rooted eventually. I'm just less inclined to creme all over my keyboard without some sort of believable hard evidence.
