[Urgent Please] Screen cracked, completely unusable, what do? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Please don't take the mick I'm absolutely fuming, dropped my phone this morning and part of the screen has shattered. Now it's completely black and nothing I can do to make it work, the phone is on because it's still receiving messages. How screwed am I? I'm going abroad tonight and I desperately need some sort of phone I don't even care about the screen being cracked. I don't have Nexus Protect either. Thanks in advance

damn, where'd it hit?
aside from getting the screen repaired, no clue what to suggest. mustve dislodged something causing the entire screen to go black

Just over the bottom speaker. This is awful the crack isn't even that big, less than a quarter of the screen! I'm close to the edge right now I can't believe a phone I've had for just over a month does this the first time I drop it. WHY TODAY FFS

At this point you probably have to send it in for repairs. You want someone here to tell you something that doesn't exist.

I can't post links yet so I can't post a photo, but for a phone to be a paperweight after a fall and crack this small is frankly ridiculous, an iPhone will still work flawlessly even if the screen is utterly destroyed. And without Nexus Protect I'm now placed in a position where I can't even get it fixed, even for money? You can't even get Nexus Protect in the UK, does this mean that any UK Nexus user should just throw away their phone when it breaks?
I love this phone to bits but build quality like this is appalling

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, but you are looking to blame everything except the one place it lives, yourself, you dropped it (not deliberately), you have no insurance etc.
There is as much chance of an iPhone having an inoperable screen after being dropped as any other. Seen plenty of iPhones that work but nothing on the screen over the years, same as with other phones, so this is not unique to the 6P at all. As for Nexus protect, no it isn't available in the UK, but there are lots of alternatives, Bank's often provide cover for a fee, you can extend your house insurance to cover it, there are also 3rd party polices specifically for phones like Protect your Bubble.
I know you are emotional at the moment, but the phone isn't to blame for you not being properly covered if you should have been. Some consciously decide to take the risk, others get themselves covered. Some unfortunately choose to not make a decision, they can't blame others for that. Even having cover would not solve the problem of having it repaired in no time before you go away. If you need data off of it, have you rooted and installed TWRP?
Do you not have the old phone the Nexus replaced?

I know two people whose iPhone 5s and 6 suffered a 4 and 6(maybe) foot fall and it's display behaved the same way as it's doing on your 6P.

Yes it's my fault and yes I'm an idiot. This is my 10th post so I can actually show you the extent of the damage. I've never seen any other phone rendered useless from something as small as this

In all fairness I would expect any phone to crack the way I dropped it. It was only from around 2.5 feet and bounced off the carpet but hit the edge of a tile face-first. However I would also expect the phone to still work as it wasn't a huge impact. If every phone ceased to work entirely after the first drop people wouldn't pay £500 for it

Yeah, I have backups on the phone but I can't get my laptop to connect to the Nexus as I can't put my passcode in. And I sold my OPO as soon as the 6P arrived. Sod's law

Instead of trying to disparage the phone, deal with your problem at hand. Send it in for repair. That's your solution.

Furthering the point. Does anybody know of any decent UK-based repair centres that deal with the 6P?

Doesn't help you now bit once you have it repaired you could insure it for £7 pm, well worth it in my opinion.
Not aware of any repair stores that deal with the Nexus, apparently it's a hard phone to repair also so don't think it will be cheap [emoji19] [emoji19]

It is what it is. Your statements lead me to believe that you are very immature and demanding. You dropped your phone, you chose not to insure it and now you are upset about it when in fact you botched by breaking it and not having insurance. Hopefully it's a lesson learned but after reading your posts I doubt it.

Also depends what damage has been done in the inside too pal, I'll be honest I've dropped mine a couple of times and taken chunks out of the bezel I was really lucky not too smash the screen... Just luck of the draw I suppose

You made your decision already. Get an iphone next time since it is impervious to destruction.

I may be wrong, but that photo you posted looks like the screen got smashed by something blunt dead center with quite a bit of force. not the froce of a 2.5ft fall on carpet, then to a hard object.
You have no reason to lie, it's an anonymous forum, but the photo doesnt look to me to match the story. Ive seen multiple drop tests from 6+ feet and not much more than some cracking. That looks like a thin hammer was taken to it.
Really sucks, and repairs don't look as easy as other devices... Good luck, and whatever you end up doing, report back so others know where to go if in the same boat

That was my thought. That is quite a forceful blow shatter pattern. Not hugely surprising it has affected some of the electronics like the digitiser.
Hopefully the damage is limited to the replacement screen part.

I just saw the photo also. you can see the center of the blunt force that hit the screen and it circles outward. That wasn't a fall to the ground and a spiderwebbed screen.

Anyone have HTC Letter(s) fall off back of device? TICKS me off.

One reason I got this was hardware...sturdy..beautiful..then letter falls off some time this morning.
Think you can get these back?
I guess try HTC.. don't wanna go thru Sprint.
Uugh.
just ask them for a new battery cover?
The silver letters under the camera...they fall out...trust me.

.....And.... Id waste my time and energy (like I am with this post) posting this exactly why?
My T in HTC fell out of the device. The C. was very loose...I took it and super glued.
It happened.
No pic.
Don't care if U believe it or not.
Even though I risk sounding like a big advertisement (I recommended another product from this company just 2-3 days ago)
...you might want to check out zagg invisible shields. If the letters are infact prone to falling off (which I can't imagine looking at my own evo..) this will stop it from happening (on top of making it totally awesome/unscratchable/insanely-shiny )
sweet...now you have a perfect reason to customize your back cover!
options include (but not limited to):
1) get the clear back cover (in the xda forums)
2) make a carbon fiber back cover (in the xda forums)
3) get your older sisters silver nail polish and recreate the HTC
4) convince a buddy (or preferable foe) to get an EVO...then swap back covers
on the serious side...i would consider that manufacturer defect. sprint should process that as a hardware warranty issue. if not, call HTC directly.
side note...if this was not caused by something intentional, i would very carefully review where you store/carry your phone. those "stickers" are rather unlikely to simply fall off after a month.
I have like 3 spare battery covers now.
I said that because it is taken out of context. That is something you say when someone claims to get 200 hours off a single charge, not when someones phone breaks. Sorry I did not catch your hidden meaning in the 5 words you posted, it just kinda blends in with the other pointless posts, like the person talking about a dildo
calm down anyway, I didn't see you post setting a higher bar
...and btw "pics or it didn't happen", how does that mean anything but the fact you don't believe it?
Need to see some pics as it just doesn't seem possible LOL Seems like a troll post to me.

sigh... LOOOOL, come on, how many people had a problem with their screens coming unglued? Is it that far fetched that the glue would give on the letters?

Think about it logically, the cover is rubber coated and the lettering is held on with like a two sided stick tape type compound. Does sticky stuff REALLY still well to rubberized surfaces? No, the only reason they normally do not fall off is because they are recessed but as you guys have now been told, a couple of us in fact did have issues with this.
I'm sure if I really wanted to complain, HTC would probably send me a new one.
Damn...looks familiar Kdoggy.

Now OP, who's a moron?
My T and C just fell off...
Sometime between yesterday afternoon and this morning, my T and C both fell off my back cover! Naturally I went Googling for similar situations and I found this post.
So. I realize many people will say "oh, it looks better now!" and whatnot, but I see this a a defect. Has anyone else who's had this problem attempted confronting either Sprint, HTC, or their place of purchase? If so, what were your results?
If I'm not doing much else this afternoon I may swing by both Best Buy and the Sprint store and see what they say.
So far I have no issues with the HTC letters on the back of the phone.
The T on mine just came off yesterday.

Wondering what happens if your note falls from 1 foot?

It shatters the screen!!!! motherf^#*!^#*(. I was getting out of my car and it fell directly on the screen in the garage.

The thing is that it is a big phone and hard to keep in the hand. A good case is a must.....I have a feeling I will not be the last.

If it still works, he should consider himself lucky. Things like is always makes me glad, I'm safe than sorry. I'm going to have to consider SquareTrade after I get my screen protector & case.
So we can assume now that the material used by Samsung is not the same in terms of strength and durability as Gorilla Glass.

Iphones are made out of crap Olephobic glass that they buy from 3rd world countries. It costs ≈200 USD to make a 16gb 4gs. Of course it's gonna get wrecked off 1 drop.

My recommendation get a semi hard rubber case takes a beating. I have never broke a screen in 25 years of having a phone. I did Have a Blackberry old Brick (big square ugly phone) I dropped it off a 40 ft roof and it bounced and the screen never broke......... Luck of the Irish I guess
Either way I have dropped alot of phones and the semi hard case seems to take the shock
Bummer man, probably 145usd for a screen assembly.........
Note hasn't even been out for that long so even if you don't have insure to cover it I'm pretty sure your still applicable to apply.
A device that big and heavy would really break easier than the smaller ones I guess.

It works perfect no body damage just the screen
Its not gorilla glass its just a thin piece of common glass. I am pretty sure it broke because it landed flat on the screen.
The problem with any glass screen isn't that they are "shatter" proof, but they are scratch resistant. Just about any piece of glass tinsel strength will resist a scratch (except for a diamond), but a sudden impact, especially on an edge will pretty much shatter it. The gorilla glass can flex, if you've seen the video, but I bet they never show anyone striking it on the edge. Even though in your event, it fell on the face, from the look of the photo, it landed on the edge first, even if just by a small amount.
I have a Dell Streak and the first thing I do before exiting my vehicle, is to make sure it is in the pouch before I get out of the car. My previous phones (HTC's) got dropped several times getting into/out of my car. I use to keep an otter box case on it, but they are so bulky, not many cases around for belt use.
I feel for you, but, I bet just about any large surface area piece of glass would do the same thing. Head over to the Dell Streak forum and you'll see a few broken glass streaks.

Screen cracked under normal use.

Some how my screen cracked even though I have dropped it. Am I able to claim warranty?

Well if it cracked when you dropped it, it`s your fault, did you have a case on it or a screen protector.
Also where did it break, do you have a pic.

It is pretty much impossible to claim "normal use" for a screen cracking.. and as the case of the Note is not structurally strong enough for it to be the cause, you are most likely out of luck
How can a screen crack under "normal" usage conditions? I put my note through abnormal conditions and it doesn't crack. Glass doesn't just spontaneously break. Are you sure you didn't warp/flex the phone with a case/your hands/pocket?
EDIT: To clarify, normal usage conditions IMHO is classified as:
- Touching/swiping the screen with your finger within reasonable pressure limits
- Touching/swiping the screen with the stylus within reasonable pressure limits
- Depressing the side mounted click buttons and home button with your finger within reasonable pressure limits
Unless OP has a service plan or extended warranty that covers accidental damage, he is SOL.
How exactly does a screen crack under "normal use"? Fingernails honed to an icepick edge?

Yeah, I have had a similar problem with my laptop where the screen broke even without dropping it. Sometimes these things happen, even with the best of hardware. I haven´t heard many people complaining about inexplicably broken screens, so I don´t think there is anything fundamentally wrong with the note. You can´t rule out that your screen had some defect that caused this, but you equally can´t prove it, and without proof of a fault you are on your own, since warranty is not there to replace your phone when you break it. Your best bet is to claim it on your household insurance, unless you have extended cover, since Samsung will almost certainly not fix it for free.
suppose it would be possible for the screen to go from very hot to very cold extremely fast may cause it to crack, but I'm not sure how that would happen. Playing a game on full brightness then running into a freezer? hahahah
Normal usage does not involve something that cracks the screen.

There must be a typo in there somewhere as "even though I have dropped it" would not be considered normal use which is the threads title
Its a rare thing but it does happen, Screens can just break on their own.
There was a guy over on the SGS1 forums a long time ago who was adamant his screen broke by itself, I argues with him for ages saying its impossible, But turns out it isnt
Just google it, you will see lots of results.
A mixture of certain conditions can cause a screen to break so i believe the OP, However, trying to explain this to your provider / samsung is not going to be easy.
I think your best bet would be to claim on some sort of insurance, if you have it.
Otherwise, attempt to replace it yourself, there are a lot of how-to videos online.
My advice to op is: buy a replacement display and replece it yourself.. and remember to buy sealings to for warranty void
I've just had my note back from the official UK service centre after breaking my screen.
Sent it away last Monday, came back today.
Screen replacement cost £73.94 including delivery and is still in full manufacturers warranty.
Why mess around trying to fix it yourself?

Many things can happen in your pocket, such as bumping into things. Do you expect that little bit of fabric of your pants to be destruction proof or something lol. I always put my phone with the screen towards me incase I do bump something this will hit the back cover and screen will be better protected.
Obviously dont put it in your back pocket and sit on it, i would think most people would realise thats a bad thing but as some think pockets are indestructable safe zones, thanks to a bit of fabric some may not realize sitting on your phone inside a pocket your still sitting on a phone lol.
As amazing as it may seem I have even heard of people breaking legs while wearing pants, shocking I know but in pants you would think this stuff just cant happen.

Scratched Screen

Hey guys,
So I have my nexus 4, waiting for my (quite expensive) case and screenprotector to arrive - and of course I drop the phone. It lands screen first on ground (the back has the originial protector still on it, but it just has to be the front it lands on..). Luckily nothing is cracked, but it has hairline scratches.. On older phone I wouldn't even care, but I am sure you guys can sympathize how much it hurts on a 13 day device. I have a few questions:
- Any experience with returning it to google? It is within 15 days of purchase, might be worth simply returning it and then buying a new one. Maybe google will be generous and not charge me for the screen (unless you look at it under light, you can't even see the scratches..)
- Any experience with getting the screen replaced - either via official repair center or manually? I have replaced screens before myself, but always on an older phone. On this new device I am kinda afraid to do it.
- Any other ideas? Suggestions?
Thanks, hopefully somebody has some experience with this kind of things! (and hopefully nobody has this experience ever again )
When your screen protector arrives, just put it on. My experience is that the screen protector will make the scratches mostly invisible.

Then why is it a big deal? You really have no right to return it since you dropped it and now it has tiny scratches. Not trying to be an ass or anything but that is petty on your part. Put a screen protector on and you won't see them anymore.

You have no right to return an item YOU damaged. A company can refuse a return of an item if the owner caused the damage. That's no different then me buying the phone and shattering the screen then saying oh well its only been two days so full refund please.

I think that you should deal with it, get the screen replaced if you don't like it with scratches. The fact that people say return it within 15 days after you damage it says that they are cheap and hold no responsibility for their actions. Man up. If you damage it, pay and get it fixed or own it with scratches on it - if it were that important to you, you wouldn't have let it get scratched up in the first place.
Here we go again...I'm pretty sure none of you ever did such things...with anything in life.

Yes. I never returned anything if I broke it.

So I know we have had disagreements in the past, but this is one of the more naive things I have ever seen. He has a right to request a full refund within 15 days for damage that HE caused? That's absurd. I dare you to buy any ~$350 device from Best Buy, damage it, and then demand a refund because you are in the refund period. Please let me know how that works for you.

Google requires a 10% (15%?) restocking fee on items returned within 15 days. Even if you return it, you will have to pay 30 to 35 dollars.

To everybody talking (joshnichols189, VoiD_Dweller, and others) how I shouldn't return it:
The reason I said "Maybe google will be generous and not charge me for the screen" is not meaning "i hope google won't notice muhahahhaha", it means - maybe google will not ask for the restocking because the scratches are small and google very nice. The word "generous" is there for a reason. I didn't say "blind" or "stupid" or "unlucky"...
I have a full right to return the item. If it is damaged, and it is, google has a full right to charge me for the damages. If I decide to return the phone, I will be ready to pay for my fault of dropping the phone (literally, haha). I am simply hoping google won't do that - not because they won't notice, but because they will be nice enough.
To others - thanks for the advice. Does anybody have experience with changing the screen? One option is to use this current screen as a screen protector - I already scratched it, might as well enjoy it, and if it gets too scratched I would just buy a new screen (these guys are not too expensive, do you guys know if that screen is genuine LG?)

Naive? No. Within 15 days of purchase as stated by Google you can return the phone for whatever reason you want. You people here are not the judge, jury and executioner. Google will obviously examine the phone when it is returned, and if they feel it is not in satisfactory condition, they will not issue a refund. That is up to Google to decide. And there are many companies, including credit card companies that will refund for a given amount of time for accidental damage caused by the purchaser.

If you don't use a case... Get MotoCare.

I have not broken a phone since my iPhone 4 many years ago...an then it was just a small hairline crack. This morning my phone fell of the couch from about a little more than a foot high and it completely shattered. I have dropped my HTC M8 so many times in this way and not even a scratch or dent. I was shocked. Oh, well, guess I'm glad I kept my M8...back to it until I get get a replacement or get it fixed...only had this moto X pure edition for 5 days! Just hope it I can not break it more than 3 times (motocares limit) until March when new phones come out.

Ouch that must have hurt. I am too without a case. I like the phone without better. I have the Motocare as well.
The glass is a pretty shape, but it definitely gives me durability concerns. I just got mine, and I don't think I'll be able to use this phone without at least a slim tpu case.

I have never had a case...just can't take the extra bulk and love the way the Moto feels (leather back) without one. Guess I'll just have to pay the price a few times or max 3
Iv'e never broken a phone, never used a case, never purchased insurance. Don't intend on starting now
Sorry for your loss.

lol, I did not intend on breaking or dropping it either. I've never put insurance on it either...did not on this one...had it only 5 days...no Motocare. Talked to an agent, he said it has not been 30 days...purchase motocare then make a claim. a little cheaper than the repair fee and i'll be able to use it again if needed. So that is what I did.
Don't you also have to pay a 50 dollar deductible with motocare?

Screenshot for you guys. You have me considering it, though I'm normally very much against paying for stuff like this. Then again, the price really isn't bad... Decisions, decisions.

I bought Motocare for my 2013 Moto X and haven't used it but then I use a case with that one. I didn't get it yet for this one.
I haven't seen a case I really like for the new one (it's in Hong Kong right now) but I keep thinking about what happens if I drop it. Maybe I will go back and get Motocare.
I dropped my first gen x from about 2 and half feet this summer and shattered my screen. It was on cement. I can only imagine the bigger x is even more fragile. Non the less what a great phone I'm on my third x now and have tried others and keep coming back.
Yep I just did the same thing earlier. Got my phone on Monday and just a small 2' fall flat on the screen did the job. My phone cracked at the top left and bottom right. I have cracks across my 5.2" screen now. I'm getting it replaced with MotoCare. I will also be buying a screen protector. I've not broken a screen on any of my phones ever.

"Gorilla Glass" lol

I got the moto care too. The rounded edges of the glass are too much like the nexus 4 and my wife cracked her fair share of nexus 4's, so I figured better be safe than sorry.
I'm sorry for your moto x man, the first day I bought mine I bought a cheap tpu case and now i'm planning to get the unicorn beetle one, that case seems the most protective one for the moto x.
Which credit card did you use? There are some credit card that has 90 days protection. Call and claim if you have one of those. Good luck and sorry about that.
Same thing happened to me OP. The rounded edges of this screen really make it susceptible to drops and cracking. This phone is really slippery when in my pocket and it literally just slipped out while I was sitting down and cracked. Filed a MotoCare claim and got a replacement 4 days later.
The only thing that has me "pausing" on Motocare is the following:
1)I know it extends the "regular" warranty to 2 years, but I think it's unlikely that something will go wrong with the "insides" of the phone in that time.
2) The cost of Motocare+ 1 Deductible is about the same a s 1 screen replacement. So, unless you're going to break the screen more than once, it really won't pay off.
Thoughts?
I dropped my 2nd gen moto x at a retail store the other day without a case. Fell from about 4 foot and landed right on the glasses. Somehow it didn't shatter or even have a scratch on it. I try to always wear a case but kinda rushed out of the house without one this time (I rarely use a case in my house).
Probably depends on the angle it drops for anyone with durability concerns.

FWIW: I'm in the same mindset, for now, at least.
