About a month ago my Tab 4 started to act a bit funny. Every time I turn the screen back on after it has auto-dimmed, I get this message in the status bar "SD card has been unexpectedly removed". Two seconds later I get another status bar message saying "Mounting SD card". I then get a popup message saying "An SD card has been inserted. Would you like to go to your files?" Clicking 'OK' takes me to the built-in files app.
Probably related -- Two days ago the device was telling me that no SD card is inserted. The built-in files app and also Solid Explorer were both telling that there was no SD card inserted. A reboot fixed the card not showing, but I still get the annoying "SD card has been unexpectedly removed" message.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how to stop it?
Edit -- 100% stock these days. Not even rooted

I'll probably just do a factory reset. If that doesn't work, I'll have to dust off Odin. I've been really enjoying not installing ROMs and flashing stuff. That's why I decided to just stick with stock

After trying to do a root, following all the instructions on this site to a T, my phone booted up and presented me with a "SD card damaged, you may have to reformat" message.
I can click on it and hit reformat, but nothing happens.
I've tried doing the Odin recovery back to the stock /system, but that didn't seem to do anything. I've also booted into android recovery mode and tried wiping the cache partition, as well as doing factory reset.
HELP PLEASE!!!
UPDATE: the SD card is recognized when plugged into my computer via microSD adapter. Re-formatting on computer to the standard FAT32. will let you know how that goes, but still open to suggestions on assumption of failure.
Update 2: format failed. Popped it back into phone to try a last-ditch attempt at SOMETHING working.
It's still giving me an error message, though it's a different one;
Blank External SD card
SD card blank or has unsupported file system
Tried to format it on my phone, and it does nothing yet again.
how to proceed?

1. Post your questions in the GENERAL section.
2. Take what appears to be a faulty SD card back to VZW and get a new one.
3. ????????

I have the same problem and did the same thing with my computer I think the sd is no longer good. I am using my sd card from my droid now and I now have a dead card too.

My Wildfire has now killed 4 SD cards. I think there is something seriously wrong with this phone.
This EXACT thing happened to my SD card, and while rooting, EXACTLY according to instructions.
I wound up just opening the automated Root batch file
and running the commands and pushing the files without the stupid automatic thing.
Something about the SD card mounting to the computer, and the computer rebooting while hanging onto a file for read/write.
I took it to Verizon and they replaced my SD card. It was even rooted, with Wireless Tether right on the home screen, LOL. Oh well.
Don't feel bad. The Samsung cards that came with the device are crap. Mine crapped out on day 2.
Call customer service and have them replace it.There's nothing you can do to fix it. Trust me, I tried...
"Sorry but this is a translation"
I have a galaxy s free i9000 yoigo Spain with 3 weeks.
for that, I get on the notification bar "internal sd card is removed unexpectedly. "
I know that the internal sd can not be removed, is moviNAND. But that's what it says.
Began to crash and thought it was cooked with the rom and install the JPU lagfix clean installs fine and works well but when you leave half an hour without the use of standby when you want to use you give to the power button stays lit I black screen and the lights on or get "internal sd card is removed unexpectedly" and not let you enter into any application and when you restart the home screen as corecien installed this rom, eg an icon on the left Home screen and then are all over, but if you've installed any application icon leaves the screen (which remains as newly installed) but remains in applications.
I tried many roms com JPU, jpy, JS3, JS5, darky simpre `s etc and do even more.
I tried to lagfix ext4 JPU and the same.
I changed the kernel speedmod and the same.
I entered the recovery when this happens and if I try to run the update.zip out "E: Can not mount / dev/block/mmcblk0p1. "
Anyone have any idea that can be and how to fix it.
Thank you very much
help please
It seems like the internal "sd" is defective or something.
thanks, it is not software? is there any way to check the internal sd?
anyone can help me, any application to check android internal sd
Try checking if the sdcard is busted, plug it in another phone if you still have problems then it's the card.

Rooted, SF VZN - yes but not without a little trix.
2.2.1 dL30
After the recent samsung update I have had to.learn some trix getting around properly ROM'ed. So I found that after I loaded 2.2 I get a memory card mounting error and it times out after 20 seconds, then I find myself in CWM(green) with no way to get into my SD card,
Hmmmm, so I popped out the card(while it was on and in the same CWM boot menu) pop the SD card back in, walla I can install from SD card, well after 2.2 install I can no longer get to my SD card via CWM boot menu.... +its good to note that my sd card works fine any other, ie; data storage, mounting and dismounting within the phone...
SO..... I put the ol detective hat on and found that it has to do with the CWM(green) and with the 2.2 I need CWM(red)
Alright, alright some light, I can dig on.
So with success via odin/ because I could not access my SD card/ I have CWM(red) and holy flying pigs! It mounts my SD card however it gets a different error when I try to backup via CWM, a script error, ugh, if you have stuck with me on this, and have any in sight, I will love you long time...

Weird suggestion you don't have a 64 gb card in the phone do you ?
On the s3 forum some users were getting the custom warning when they had a 64gb card in. They v removed it and rebooted Ashes the warning went back to normal

Same problem
I had the same exact problem. When I rebooted my phone it showed an unlocked symbol under Samsung so I checked the status and it said custom. I have a 64gb card in it so after I read this thread I opened the back pulled the card, and then the battery. I then put the battery back in and rebooted the phone without the sd card in it. The phone showed the unlocked symbol again but when I checked the status it showed official. So I re installed the sd card and rebooted the phone. This time there was no unlocked symbol and when I checked the status it showed offical. Thanks for you help guys.
is there any more permanent solution to this problem?
I have stock rom, never made any mods, even the memory card itself is samsung branded, so it seems a bit crazy that i have to keep removing the card and battery (which is probably not good for the health of either, or the phone itself) just to get the official samsung firmware to recognise that it's never been modified in any way. i've not even so much as rooted it.

Thanx. Been bugging me for months, sometimes ok, sometimes not, Samsung tech support were useless. Because of continual media checking, with phone actually heating up! (150,000+ files, card almost full), I always unmount the card at boot time, only mounting if I need it. Custom b4 unmount, (upon remount I often get "settings isn't responding"), then rarely back to official after unmount, but usually stays custom! If I take card out then boot, obviously it's fine!

Wouldn't let me edit previous reply, this is more complete:
Thanx very, very much. Been bugging me for months, sometimes ok, sometimes not, couldn't see the pattern, Samsung tech support were useless. Because of continual media checking, with phone actually heating up! (150,000+ files, card almost full), I was always unmounting the card after boot, only mounting if I needed it. Device status was custom b4 unmount, (upon remount I often get "settings isn't responding" and/or "unfortunately, settings has stopped"), and stays custom!
Solution after your info above and my experimentation: Boot with card out, after completely booted insert the card, stays official, and then unmounting/mounting/unmounting still stays official! Rebooting with card in causes custom, so I'll just be going into flight mode at night from now on!
BTW, I regularly get this when I remove and check card, clean when I run it a 2nd time:

Hi to all, please i need some help. Last nigth, i put my phone to charge and let it charge all the nigth. When i wake up, i felt the system was unstable, like, random apps crashing and my substratum theme was kinda removing until systemUI stopped and the theme was completly gone. I said "nah, i'll just reboot it". That was the problem. My microSD card, is formatted as F2FS, and my phone, when it rebooted completly, throw me a notificarion that my storage was missing, asking me to reinsert it. When i turn my phone up, it always shows that notification, until it finish starting up and mounts it.But now, that notification, persisted along time. I thinked that the sdcard could be free, so i open the back cover and the sd was ok. I take it out, make an inspection, and put it back in. But nothing happend. Now, i try to insert it on windows, it makes the sound of "New storage" but nothing was shown. I try looking on Disk Manager, but, it even didn't there appeared. Tryed taking a look on ubuntu. Nothing, but in the Disks app, i found something. Ubuntu detected it as a removable storage OF 2.2TB! I didn't knew what was happening, so i decided to write a post. Please someone help me. I have important data in that micro sdcard. I'll put some info, to take a look
DEVICE: SM-J320M
OS: RR 5.8.5 (7.1.2)
MicroSD: MicroSDHC 32GB class 10 (Kingston)
idk what more i can provide
from now, thanks
