Is there any way to restore lost data on the Verizon S5 with Lollipop BOG5?
I lost my data to a spontaneous factory reset and I did not have a backup. Talking to Verizon and Samsung, I was left with the impression that there is no way to get my data back. After searching the internet it discovered that there are recovery programs that can indeed restore deleted data and I pursued a few. Unfortunately, they do not work unless the phone is rooted which will void the warrantee. I am ready to give up my warrantee and go for it, but then I found solutions for all operating systems except the one I have (Lollipop with BOG5).
A friend highly recommended this forum and I did some searching and it looks like the answer is the same here. Rooting the phone is something I would like to try but for now, all I want to do is restore the lost data on my phone. Can anyone suggest a solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

im not sure if this app would work on a non rooted phone or what but i heard of an app called disk digger i think it might only recover pictures but hey theres one peice of a puzzle if i can find the link for it ill share it here http://diskdigger.org/ it does work without root apperently so give it a go and i hope that helps ill see if i can find anything else
Thank you very much. I did try Disk Digger with limited success. I was only able to recover a few photos. The full scan option requires root and I suspect it will find a lot more if rooted. That being said, I will see if I can download on PC to recover the SD card which also got wiped (and had most of the photos).

There was an article last week on a new update from Chainfire with the ability to root Lollipop. I have not been able to find any threads on this forum about the Verizon S5. Were we left out or is it perhaps still coming? It seems that this one would make a lot of people happy.

im on sph-l720 had 4.3 mk2 all methods was not working for me either would fail right off the bat or go thru the proccess say it was rooted then when doing root checker i wasnt rooted..... finally after messing with this for about a week i finally found a way to do it i used kingoapp.... this method was very simple and easy to use and i am now rooted..... just thought i would post this if there was those out there that was having the same trouble that i have been having

My Knox was tripped by one of the failed attempts. ... As far as I know the kingo route did not trip Knox unless the counter only stays on 1... If it adds up then no kingo did not trip my Knox that is something I'm not to sure of may be something to ask one of the ppl that know a lil more but I do know that Knox only voids the Samsung warranty. ..If something does happen u can still pay the deductible to replace ur phone... wich is only $150 that's as long as u have the insurance coverage on ur plan... As long as u follow the steps wich is really simple u won't brick... sph-l720 is not on the list for kingo but it does work that's what I used... All the other ways says that the su is out of date so I recommend if u are going to do it use kingo after I did that I downloaded rom manager n installed a CWM my phones working fine

I was trying to go even further and be able to do the free hotspot which QBKing77 had a video for as well. However, I noticed that the download links that he had supplied us folks with did not include baseband version is MK2 - which is what I am currently running (whatever that means.)
So among several other questions, first and foremost; what can I do to get the free hotspot/tether with MK2? Should I simply download one of the other links instead or will this damage my device?

You can find the MK2 hotspot mod in this thread post #337: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256950&page=34
Make sure you download the correct one. If you only rooted the stock rom then you need the odexed version, if you downloaded and installed a custom rom then you need the deodexed one. As you guessed, if you use the wrong one you will brick your phone.
TWRP backup, you need an external sdcard if you want to make backups or your internal memory will max out. If you have an external sdcard, look on the twrp backup page closely and you should see an option to switch to the external sdcard.
Stock apps delete, you can delete stock apps if you are rooted but be careful, if you don't know which ones can safely be removed then search on here to make sure you don't delete one that is required. You will need a file explorer app that has root permissions to access the system partition. I would recommend an app like titanium backup to remove these apps so that you can first back them up so you can replace it if you mess up. Again, you should use an external sdcard or it doesn't make sense to back up if you are doing it to save space.
Hello folks. Unsure weather or not i post this in the correct place. So i rooted my SM-N9005 the other day just because well i"had" to. Ofcourse the next day the 4.4 update got released and i couldn't upgrade since my by now unfriendly phone told me i had tampered with it. I tried to restore it without really knowing what the hell i did and feeling a bit stupid for not getting it. I managed to remove root but it still says it's tampered with. Reckon i triggered the flash counter somehow. I could really use your help removing root and get my little phone back to "original" shape. Talk to me like a 3 year old since i apparently couldn't figure it out on my own. Cheers!
(And yes I have been reading so much about this my head spins now. I tried different ways to recover but i cant get it to work. I intentionally left out all the different apps i used here from the forum since that will probably confuse you guys aswell.)

Ok, it started when i tried to root it by following an online gtuide. However it didnt work so I tried another one and "semi-bricked" it. Using odin. I tried readiing up on it as much as i could but the more i read the more different ways i found. Long story short, i rooted it. It worked fine. But removing root didnt seem to do the trick. I would just like to return it to stock without ruining anything. And be able to upgrade OTA if possible.I love fiddling with these things but since i pay so much for this damn phone I rather not do anything more that can destroy warranty etc. As i understood it rooting it wouldnt leave a trace and should be easy to undo. Now I understand that wasnt the case. I know I am the one to blame but would love if anyone could just try to explain what to do in a simple step by step way. If you need any info on what i did I can try to explain but i ended up with like 12 different webpages open with different solutions and to be honest I am not sure I can explain everything i tried...

Hello XDA, long time no visit. I have had my Note 2 catastrophically fail, can't be recovered, nothing, I was told the motherboard was fried. Upgraded to the Note 4, which I love and am fairly happy with just leaving stock (since I have no choice, it's AT&T's version) but I have an issue. I have data in my old TiBu backups that I really would love to recover, but I can't, because I can't root the phone. Does anyone have a creative way of recovering data from TiBu? Or am I just basically screwed, which is where I think this is headed....any help would be greatly appreciated

For apps to have some folders in the /data partition require root like TiBu and root is not available for Lollipop. You can try to downgrade to Kitkat from here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD50yW8e-EE&feature=youtu.be and use this method to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/paid-software/supersu-please-t3110954 after rooting with the latest version of kingoroot. Beware that if you downgrade to 4.4.4 it will trigger knox to 0x1 which will invalidate your warranty.

I hate to say it but without root, You know where this is headed. To be honest you will save a ton of time just redoing them.
Partially screwed I say...
All apps don't support the sync adapter for sync data feature.
If you can't sync that data,
what you can do is get a really cheap rootable phone/tablet.
Restore with TiBu
And Sync the data.
Any cheap phone is way better than emulators like Genymotion or AVDs.
For apps which don't use sync adapters ,root permissions are required so it's pointless.
I have successfully rooted my Spring LG V20 using DirtySanta and it seems to be working for the most part, but I'm not really impressed with the benefits of rooting at this point. What's even more disappointing was the lack of a method for reverting to stock. My question is--can I bring this in to a Sprint store and ask them to restore it to stock? I checked fastboot for oem status and everything reads false. I don't have SuperSU or any other root apps installed on the phone. The only thing that shows up is the damn red triange every time I boot. Anyone have any experience with this? I don't really want to get in trouble for rooting, but I'd really like to get back to factory stock. Doesn't look like we'll be getting a restore method any time soon either, correct? Thanks in advance...
I don't think there is a revert method (inside or outside the store). I know it's after the fact, but on your next device, you may want to figure out exactly what you'd want to do with root before you go through with it. I typically only do it for TB backup purposes and XPOSED, but I've found that I can back up in other ways, and I dig stock enough not to risk rooting. I don't knock you for rooting (there are plenty of good reasons to), this is just my advice going forward. In the meantime, you should look around XDA, you may find your golden goose app that you can leverage root for. Good luck.

hey sorry to hear that your having issues,
but you and the other poster are correct, sprint never released a restore file that wasn't encrypted.
And to my knowledge the repair centers would not be able to fix this issues, and sadly lg would more then likely deny a
warranty claim as this was modifications done by the end user.
A good chance in the future that we will get the files needed or a process to revert back to stock, but currently there is no SAFE method to try, and pushing the stock aboot and system.img back to the device WILL hard brick the device.. @me2151 attempted the restore process once, and failed, so please be careful as you may have issues.. The red warning triangle is due to your aboot "bootloader" being swapped for the debug version and will never go away, unless we get a dev willing to risk his device for a .png swap of the warning RED img. Other wise its there forever.
The static on boot up can be removed using a custom kernel but be aware it WILL break things in return. Typically update to prl and profile
fm radio, comfort view and a few other little things..
Hey, thanks for the reply. I can deal with the red warning screen, I just get a little anxious when I can't use the touchscreen or my cellular data gets hosed. As long as there are fixes here (which there have been--thanks to all) and I can use my phone, we're good. I figured if someone could break encryption on government files then why would an encrypted KDZ file be such a challenge? At any rate, I appreciate the help. I'll just keep my fingers crossed for a PNG swap!

After days of searching the interwebs, I am close to resetting to factory settings and returning this thing, even though I really like the phone itself.
Admittedly, I'm a total Android virgin and know only what many hours of googl'ing have left behind (it's all a blur, at this point), but after all of my attempts to use the common rooting suspects (KingoRoot, King Root, iRoot, etc.), I sit here more confused than I can handle.
First attempts at figuring out adb and fastboot made me realise I am in way over my head.
Anyone know of a way to root my XZP running Pie, from my Mac, for free (if at all possible), without first having to get a degree in computer science. I can stumble my way around Terminal, if given clear instructions, but that's where it ends.

I really want to get the EU firmware flashed onto this thing, with the modem working as designed for the US market, and hopefully use this thing as a router and many other things that require root access.
But I also read the thread about people like me, who don't know much about Android, ruining their bootloaders and then coming here for help/support...so the question for me arises is: reset to factory settings and return it, before I get myself into quicksand territory, or do whatever it takes to figure it out (with the help of the esteemed community).
It's just such a nice phone, and I miss the iOS jailbreaking days so much, that this would be the perfect antidote.

yeah, I am set on the XZP, as my first Android phone. It serves my primary purpose of being a little presentation device for my 4K video and photography work perfectly, I already enjoy it as a very good Hi-Res music player, it will hopefully serve me as a little portable router/VPN, etc. once I figure out how to root it, and it was a great deal, for a used one, for so much power. But I also want to be able to use its fingerprint sensor, here in the USA, and for that...
So when you say that "a very good manual" is out there, would you be so kind as to share a link? I tried to follow so many methods, at this point, that I am at the end of my wits.

thanks again, mad0701...I was out riding all day and just skimmed over that link...first reaction: this is more advanced than I feel confident tackling...I fear that a one wrong action on my part might leave me in a situation where I can't even get the phone back to factory settings, and won't be able to return it anymore (for which I have one week left).
I'll read through the manual in more detail, maybe tomorrow, and if it seems that I can actually do all that, successfully, then maybe I will give it a try. But since I don't even know what the TA is, or the TWRP version, it may be something I may not wanna get into at this time...only so many hours in the day.

Lots of people keep pointing at this thread without actually reading it. There still isn't a way to relock your bootloader with your saved TA partition. Yes you can save your individualy encrypted key, but then what?
You still need to unlock your phone to get permanent root, with no way of putting the key back in place, so you still need a 'fixed' kernel
If you want an easy way to root your phone, as you admit yourself your android experience is limited., then I would recomend Xperifix
@sToRm// wrote a one stop shop program that did everything, but then took his work to a private website as he wanted to charge for all the hours that he put into it.
The original thread is here, this would tell you what to do and the drivers you need to install (important). Then the go to the Xperiafix website and pay your $20.
I used it to root my XZ1 compact and it really was as easy as plug it in and follow instructions.
The only probelm with this is that there still isn't a root available for Pie firmware, so his fix is based on Oreo builds.

You could go with a custom rom to get rooted Pie, read the instructions and decide if you're up for it.

I totally missed the Mac part....
Alright, u need adb and fastboot for mac.
If you will find newer instructions use it, here is the first thing I found.
Unlock ur device here using fastboot, it clearly written there how to do it.
Find latest twrp recovery in this forum.
Use fastboot again.
"fastboot flash recovery your.recovery.img"
Then, using this recovery u need to flash latest magisc.
I've gave u enough information, with minimum efforts u will be able to find everything u need to do it. Plus u will learn something useful.

the manual looking complicated but it only took 2 hours for me, and if u backup and restore your TA partition, u dont need any drm fix for all firmwares, and dont pay for any useless programs like xperifix(the guy on upper comments always advertise this useless windows program)
for rooting, its very easy on pie
I really appreciate all of y'all's input...but, to be honest, I understand too little of it, at the moment, to feel inclined to dive into executing some of those instructions.
I mean, it looks like I was given enough info to have a chance to root and flash my XZP successfully, but I may just hold off for a bit, maybe return this one and wait until I can either score an XZP that's already been rooted and flashed with the mixed EU/US firmware, or wait until I can afford to get a newer device, which has all of the features I am looking for already working: 4K screen, fingerprint sensor, and preferably being a Sony...if such a device exists now.
