At the risk of being barked at by the spirited young hackers on this forum:
After days of searching the interwebs, I am close to resetting to factory settings and returning this thing, even though I really like the phone itself.
Admittedly, I'm a total Android virgin and know only what many hours of googl'ing have left behind (it's all a blur, at this point), but after all of my attempts to use the common rooting suspects (KingoRoot, King Root, iRoot, etc.), I sit here more confused than I can handle.
First attempts at figuring out adb and fastboot made me realise I am in way over my head.
Anyone know of a way to root my XZP running Pie, from my Mac, for free (if at all possible), without first having to get a degree in computer science. I can stumble my way around Terminal, if given clear instructions, but that's where it ends.
hope someone can help.
I really want to get the EU firmware flashed onto this thing, with the modem working as designed for the US market, and hopefully use this thing as a router and many other things that require root access.
But I also read the thread about people like me, who don't know much about Android, ruining their bootloaders and then coming here for help/support...so the question for me arises is: reset to factory settings and return it, before I get myself into quicksand territory, or do whatever it takes to figure it out (with the help of the esteemed community).
It's just such a nice phone, and I miss the iOS jailbreaking days so much, that this would be the perfect antidote.
Anyone care to help?

If you are unsure, which phone you will buy...... Make first of all your choices... Look in xda if the device is supported and following the thread

yeah, I am set on the XZP, as my first Android phone. It serves my primary purpose of being a little presentation device for my 4K video and photography work perfectly, I already enjoy it as a very good Hi-Res music player, it will hopefully serve me as a little portable router/VPN, etc. once I figure out how to root it, and it was a great deal, for a used one, for so much power. But I also want to be able to use its fingerprint sensor, here in the USA, and for that...
So when you say that "a very good manual" is out there, would you be so kind as to share a link? I tried to follow so many methods, at this point, that I am at the end of my wits.

thanks again, mad0701...I was out riding all day and just skimmed over that link...first reaction: this is more advanced than I feel confident tackling...I fear that a one wrong action on my part might leave me in a situation where I can't even get the phone back to factory settings, and won't be able to return it anymore (for which I have one week left).
I'll read through the manual in more detail, maybe tomorrow, and if it seems that I can actually do all that, successfully, then maybe I will give it a try. But since I don't even know what the TA is, or the TWRP version, it may be something I may not wanna get into at this time...only so many hours in the day.

Lots of people keep pointing at this thread without actually reading it. There still isn't a way to relock your bootloader with your saved TA partition. Yes you can save your individualy encrypted key, but then what?
You still need to unlock your phone to get permanent root, with no way of putting the key back in place, so you still need a 'fixed' kernel
If you want an easy way to root your phone, as you admit yourself your android experience is limited., then I would recomend Xperifix
@sToRm// wrote a one stop shop program that did everything, but then took his work to a private website as he wanted to charge for all the hours that he put into it.
The original thread is here, this would tell you what to do and the drivers you need to install (important). Then the go to the Xperiafix website and pay your $20.
I used it to root my XZ1 compact and it really was as easy as plug it in and follow instructions.
The only probelm with this is that there still isn't a root available for Pie firmware, so his fix is based on Oreo builds.

You could go with a custom rom to get rooted Pie, read the instructions and decide if you're up for it.

I totally missed the Mac part....
Alright, u need adb and fastboot for mac.
If you will find newer instructions use it, here is the first thing I found.
Unlock ur device here using fastboot, it clearly written there how to do it.
Find latest twrp recovery in this forum.
Use fastboot again.
"fastboot flash recovery your.recovery.img"
Then, using this recovery u need to flash latest magisc.
I've gave u enough information, with minimum efforts u will be able to find everything u need to do it. Plus u will learn something useful.

the manual looking complicated but it only took 2 hours for me, and if u backup and restore your TA partition, u dont need any drm fix for all firmwares, and dont pay for any useless programs like xperifix(the guy on upper comments always advertise this useless windows program)
for rooting, its very easy on pie
I really appreciate all of y'all's input...but, to be honest, I understand too little of it, at the moment, to feel inclined to dive into executing some of those instructions.
I mean, it looks like I was given enough info to have a chance to root and flash my XZP successfully, but I may just hold off for a bit, maybe return this one and wait until I can either score an XZP that's already been rooted and flashed with the mixed EU/US firmware, or wait until I can afford to get a newer device, which has all of the features I am looking for already working: 4K screen, fingerprint sensor, and preferably being a Sony...if such a device exists now.

Hey I’m having some trouble getting to grips with rooting too; there is quite a lot of information (some of it contradictory or at least inconsistent) for someone new like myself to take in. I consider myself pretty tech savvy but my G1 is uninsured and I’m frankly terrified of bricking it as I’ve got a year left on my contract to pay.
Anyway my point being...the guide your pointing to is specifically tailored to US models as are most guides on the net it’s very hard to find anything definitive about rooting the UK models with regard to SPL and Radio, etc. Also, given that this stuff moves soo quickly (which is an amazing testament to the hard work that all the devs and everyone else involved puts in, thank you!) it’s hard to catch up on everything and understand what exactly to do.
One click root works fine on crc37 uk phones ive rooted a couple now just follow the usual instructions, there's little danger of anything getting bricked if you arent touching radio which you dont need to do to load CM using the one click root app

Now, this means by phone is rooted, (Basically giving me sys admin rather than root user?)

That's an original and most up to date UK version, so no you're not rooted. Easiest way is the one-click root, just install, put rom on SD card, run prog, reboot, flash (Read full instructions though).
Having root enables you to have full access, so you can do whatever you like from terminal and applications which require special permissions to run can, some cool stuff can only be done with root.

Thanks for the quick reply and I'm not trying to Hijack the thread, (But the OP will probably want to know this too), once I've rooted and installed the new ROM from the boot menu loader thing, how do I go about formatting my SD card to ex2?

Yeah cyanogen roms already contain their own method of app2sd, so trying to use another method on top just screws things up.
All you need to do is partition the card, then when you reboot it will see the partition, move your current stuff over and be good to go.

I've watched a few videos on how to root a htc but they've all been made around the time of the phones release, and as we all know each year things get bigger and better in computing, so new techniques might have arrived. So I wanted to ask here what are the full sets of instructions to root a htc one m8 in 2016, starting from watch software to use to back up your phone, how to unlock the bootloader, etc... and using whatever new rooms and kernels people have been using and would recommend.

3) gain S-off, which makes system partition accessible outside of the custom recovery. the phone can be enjoyed the same as any other rooted device at this stage. **this can only be done one way, and that one single way isn't free.**
you want to have all the stages mentioned in that link covered apart from the last firmware guide which is more optional.
How are you getting S-off that isn't free? I had S-off within a week of owning my phone back when it was new, and I'm on Verizon, they are the devil when it comes to modding anything. Have you looked into Sunshine?

Just rechecked into it to refresh my memory, as I've been S-off so long I forgot the method I had used. It was in the pre-Sunshine days. I used Firewater to get S-off (thought Sunshine sounded odd to me for some reason). Didn't cost me anything but a couple minutes of my time. Hope that helps. I wouldn't want to pay for S-off either, it's not really something that I think many people would want to do...

If you have a way to revert it and become S-on again (assuming you're S-off also) I would say you could hide the fact it's been rooted by unrooting and removing any root apps, but don't quote me on that. I rooted back when mine was new, and never looked back at the warranty. Now my phone would have had the warranty expire anyway, so it still doesn't matter. When in doubt, assume the warranty to be void upon rooting, but research a way to revert if it's possible. Not like we have to bother with KNOX at least.
only way is USD $25 for sunshine....can't S-OFF it without other ways.

firewater doesn't work anymore unfortunately. Only way to get S-Off now is sunshine @ USD 25.

Sorry. I have my issue fixed now as I just needed to type cmd on the top of the window to get token to unlock bootloader token. Flashed aicp 14.0 working excellent. Much faster, better battery oh only arm 9.0 pico seemed like the best gapps as I tried other ones didn't work. Man it took a lot of searching to do this as things are posted all over the place

Meaning what exactly? Doesn't see storage (did you select the option on the phone to allow data transfer?) or adb or fastboot? Booted to the custom ROM, or something else (bootloader, recovery)?
When asking for help, please give as much information as possible. One sentence is really never enough info to go on.

I am new to rooting. Several months back I rooted my yoga book using magisk. Root was great except that I couldn't install the Nougat update. And because I didn't think I needed it, I did not make a backup of the stock ROM.
I have tried to unroot the device using the magisk uninstaller. The OTA update still failed to install.
What path should I take to unroot my tablet so it can accept updates?

I can confirm that re-flashing an older stock version is possible and restores the ability to install OTAs if you don't have a backup at hand.

Great! I had looked at that post but was unsure what action to take. I downloaded the YB1-X90F_USR_S000196_1611040312_WW06_BP_ROW-flashfiles.zip from the link you posted. Should I follow MarkAllen's instructions in the previous reply to unzip the folder and used fastboot commands to flash the ROM?

For me it was not worth the trip.
I rooted to be able to uninstall NoteSaver because it had an incredibly frustrating glitch when switching to handwriting mode. Several OTA updates did not fix the issue, so I felt great fixing it myself. I didn't use root for anything else. Overall, the time spent troubleshooting and researching was too much. I use the Yoga Book at university to take notes and it was very hard to find time to try to unroot the tablet and get Nougat. I never bricked the device but I spend many hours resetting it.
If I used root to do something more interesting and had more time to play around, sure it might be worth it.

You probably might want to lock the bootloader at the end before you execute the continue command.

And it might happen that you face an error while flashing that oemvars bootloader_policy-oemvars.txt. I couldn't find out why that happened and ignoring it seems to be harmless.
As soon as the system started you need to skip the whole first setup and to restore the country code as explained by MarkAllen. Otherwise you might need to re-start from the beginning after installing an OTA.
General info for people that didn't root their yoga book and just want to re-flash the stock system: You'll need the info from this thread since chances are high that you face problems with the usb drivers.

you need to input country code to enable keyboard. There are several steps as below :
a) Open ‘’contacts’’ app, create a new local contact ” test”
b) Click search button at contact
c) Input ####6020# code into search bar
d) Browser the country code list, then chose country code you want to use, such as US
e) Then DUT will reboot
How to I skip the whole first setup to get to the contacts app?
Those are exactly the steps you need to follow. It might take some seconds till the new window with the list of all available country codes shows up.
Just use the skip button on the bottom-right of the screen during the setup.

Why can't I use the unlock bootloader option in settings on my 727 with .021 firmware to initiate the root process and adding twrp? Basically all I want to do is remove leeco bloatware, and I am new at this. I have read darn near every post on this phone here and seen too many variations on how to do this. If I brick it I'll deal with it but at the moment I am happy with the stock rom. Maybe as confidence builds I'll try other things but if I can rid myself of the leeco apps I'll be happy. Guide me through this and I will be eternally grateful.

From what I've gathered from hours of reading these forums I should be able to use the oem bootloader unlock in my settings, download twrp from Google play store and be on my merry way then. One of the forums went over oem unlock and they still had to use another process to unlock. Has that been resolved?

It likely you will have to flash bootloader to get unlocked.
If zip fails you will need to do this to get unlocked.

Be careful. Make sure that you root with Magisk and install a permanent TWRP recovery. After unlocking the bootloader, rooting and installing TWRP, itseasy to do anything that you want to your phone. The steps for unlocking the X727 bootloader is different and a little more tricky than other Leeco's.

By golly 'sk' this may be exactly what I am after. After reading the article within your links there appears to be a little debate but I can pick thru that pretty easily. The 'space' issue would be nice to have after debloating but if in partitions that I cannot use so be it. The ram issue and battery usage are my main concerns when it comes to benefits of debloating (not forgetting the useless ads and apps I will never use along with any other trash I may receive from bloatware that I am unaware of) I will give this process a try and if any questions arise do you mind if I come to you or do you recommend another fully educated in this process? Many, many thanks for this post!

It appears in posted thread that "pm uninstall" is the only path to take in my phone also as the disable path errors out. Never saw if there was an easy way to get lots of com.'''''''.'''' 's in one pass or if each one has to be pm uninstalled individually?

You'll have to do it individually unless you can figure out how to mass insert a bunch of lines into cmd. Probably as a .bat file. Look around the Internet on how to compile one.
I have accomplished my task and am very thankful to sk and tson for their patience and willingness to help a person out. If all someone wants to do is debloat w/o root and their device will allow them follow sk's path...if want root follow tson's. Worked perfect with my leeco le pro 3 x727. Again thank you!

Hello Guys,
I'm about to buy the OnePlus 8 Pro, as I haven't had a root-able phone for a few years and greatly miss it. In choosing the phone to buy, and to save you guys time answering repeated questions, I of course have read many threads related to rooting, which versions can me rooted, issues with rooting, etc. Mind you most of my rooting was with HTC and I never once had an issue.
I'll be buying the US market unlocked variant, rooting it, and I'll likely use Magisk during the process.
1. Do we actually need to flash a bootloader, or can I just load it with the bootloader without flashing to maintain the stock bootloader?
2. What things are broken from root? I'm assuming the google pay features will break, but will I not be able to use the fingerprint scanner? Or is it a hit and miss, intermittent problem for some and not others? This is the question that seems to lack a consolidated, concise explanation.
3. Is it better to use the international version, or the US version, or does it matter?
I rarely use custom roms, but when I do, I prefer to run pure Android. I prefer speed over animations. When I don't, I remove every app I can without breaking the phone. How friendly is this phone to trial and error, and re-flashing to start over while I'm learning?

Previous HTC rooter here. Had the 10, then the 12+
This phone is slightly more root friendly. And no, there is no custom bootloader. You will not need to go and get a token from a website to unlock the bootloader. As far I can tell at a glance, S-OFF isn't a thing.
If you set up magisk properly, google pay will work (for now). I use it every other day. Widevine certification will default to L3, so you can't root and keep that in L1 like you could with HTC. I don't get it myself.
Do: backup persist partition (and modem1 and modem2 I guess? Someone recommended it) For sure. While rare, and particularly an issue with magisk canary, if you want any chance of the fingerprint sensor to last, backup the persist partition. Otherwise, you're technically sitting on a ticking time bomb and it can pop at any time and no longer function. Haven't heard anything too recent, but better safe than sorry. Only other solution is RMA.
HTC phones, least the ones I used, used LCD panels. I love LCD, because it seems more protection from burn in and screen retention, and less issues for screen problems. That said, this is a newer screen and amazing, just not as amazing I feel as an LCD screen (although this is a better screen, via tech upgrades and more). Keep in mind there are rampant reports of green tint or burn in right away, black crush, and other screen issues. If you do go with the phone, I recommend giving that a thorough once over.
Customer service is in par to that famous thing of kids going, "Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" Type stuff. Do not expect anything from customer service outside what directly is stated to contact them (such as RMAs), and then be prepared to fight tooth an nail for it, and prepare for any additives that arise from it. I would have better odds of customer service with comcast (as weird it sounds) than with oneplus' customer service. They will not honor anything outside what you can do on the website yourself.
What I mean by that, is if you have a coupon for a 10 dollars off accessories, and you accidentally "place" an order and forgot something, and want to add it again? Either wait for your current order to expire to then allow for the coupon, or you're SOL. And to add: By far, the oneplus 8 launch was the worst I ever experienced from any industry, especially as it comes to ordering it. So if you stay, keep that in mind.
A lot of people recommend to just forgo the warranty and get your own via other means (my renters insurance provides it for like, 6 bucks a year) as it's literally the same boat as customer service, with reports of people being charged erroneously like, 500 dollars for some incompency from the warehouse.
If you're in the US the global model I believe is the one you want. UK, INDIA, and CHINA have their own model. While it can be possible to use these, keep that in mind that you most likely want the phone to be compatible with the bands of your country. I believe the india / chinese model is the only one who now has the photochrom filter disabled, thus if you do go with one of these, you'll want to either install a magisk rom, or fix it yourself with one of the many guides available.
You can convert the phone to different models more easily. Such as chinese to global, as compared to HTC phones. You don't need to do superCID like you did or similar I believe, and it's very tolerant of that. In fact, the first oneplus phone even shipped with CyanogenMod installed, now more or less known as lineageOS. This device is very customizable friendly. In fact, some roms will even allow you to uninstall practically anything you want.
Speed is the name of the game, and if you like fast devices, this will blow you out of the water most likely. I personally run .5 on all animation speeds myself.
And of course, if there is issues and you really messed stuff up, you can use the MSM tool or whatever it is to correct the issue. (Again, keep that persist backup in case)
The device will detect if you're rooted and installed either the small OTA package, or the full package in case. I used to always have TWRP installed, but I don't even use it anymore myself so much. The full package can flash through the system update too, btw. Only upon unlocking the bootloader will the data partition be wiped that one time.
There is the hole punch camera, and that was a significant selling feature for me for HTC, but... I figured I'd deal with it this once. Keep that in mind if this feature bugs you as it does me.

What do you mean by "need to go and get a token from a website"?
Can't I just simply unlock the bootloader like on my Oneplus 5t?
I am getting my 8Pro this week and plan to install the global ROM instead of the Chinese ROM it will come with, then root it and finally install TWRP.
Do I need to install TWRP to both slots? What are those "slots" anyway? My old phone was a 5t so it had no "slots" .
The instructions I have read are a bit confusing, seems like it is more difficult to install TWRP than it was on the 5t.

Yes, you can. So HTC was the exact process, except you had to go to HTC dev, upload a string that was copied from bootloader, it would then create a token file that only your device could utilize and when you pushed it back to the device, that unlocked the bootloader. Oneplus, you just tell it you wanna unlock the bootloader and done. Since they are coming from HTC, why I said that.

How about installing TWRP? Would you have any suggestions as to how to go about it?
Also, I read that I better wipe /data before installing anther ROM.
However it seems TWRP still can't format partitions which means I can't wipe data.

Think mostly it's boot, but there is a way to install it if you must. I personally haven't touched twrp since moving to oneplus. If you're moving between AOSP or oxygen or hydrogen, yes, wipe data. This can be done via factory reset, without need of twrp. Now, don't quote me too closely for AOSP, but as oxygen or hydrogen builds go (Assuming magisk) you don't need to wipe data so much. I'd recommend consulting the individual device threads.

Is there no way to retain L1? I've come from a Mi 9T where as long as your persist wasn't corrupted, L1 was fine. Do oneplus store the widevine certs in the boot partition or something strange?
