[Q] Can someone please explain the rooting on this phone to me?

I apologize if there is already a thread like this, but the search wasnt working.. I know what i can do with my phone once it is rooted, I am just interested in what happens tot he actual phone. I could be wrong, but once i root it isnt it always possible to tell that i rooted it even if i unroot it so therefor all warantees are voided? sorry if im being unclear, i cant think of another way to explain it haha.

The language on the "warranty void" screen says that unlocking the bootloader "may" void your warranty. On the Nexus One, HTC usually honored the warranty if the issue was with anything hardware related and could not have been the result of software tampering. Granted, that's them and this is Samsung.
Further, unless there is something hidden in the system files that counts the number of times you unlock the bootloader, you can always relock it prior to sending it in for repair with fastboot oem lock.

So there is a way to kind of undo the root without them knowing? THanks a lot btw. I figured it was something like this.

In a nutshell, unlocking the bootloader means you will be allowed to flash non-Google/custom files to the system partition and more or less enables superuser access(aka root). Once thats done, then you "root" the device, push the Superuser.apk which will enable the rooted apps. Please check out the rooted section of my stickied FAQ for more detail on how to do this if you decide to. There are two great threads I link to.
Once you lock the bootloader, you lose access to the system partition and superuser I believe which effectively unroots it.

So basically if you want to do any sort of mods, flash roms, etc. you need to unlock the bootload and root. Thanks a lot for explaining that. I think i understand it now, but just to clarify, if i unlock the bootloader and root will i be able to get the phone back to stock without samsung knowing that i rooted/unlock the bootloader?

Yes, to mod/flash roms you need to unlock the bootloader. It's possible that sometime down the road someone may develop a method of gaining root access on the phone without touching it, but it's unlikely given the fact that we can both unlock and lock the bootloader very easily.
Right now, the answer is... more or less. If you make a NAND backup in Clockwork Recovery/Rom manager of your stock ROM, you can restore back to that, fastboot flash the closest thing we have currently to the stock recovery(check development section for this), then relock the bootloader. This will give the phone all appearances of being stock. Unless Samsung has something deep in the system files tracking the number of times you've unlocked/locked(which I doubt, since I'm sure such a system would have been found by now), you should be good to go.
Most people who have returned the phone to Best Buy have noted that they don't even power on the device or check to see if the bootloader is unlocked or if there's a custom recovery on there. But your mileage may vary.

Interesting stuff. I was under the impression that once clockworkmod is flashed there is no way to remove it at this time.
Reading this thread I'm guessing and hoping this is not the case?

I had clockworkmod installed but used rom manager to flash the 2.3.1 update and i've now got the stock bootloader back. I guess the ota update does the same? It would seem that getting back to stock is pretty easy.

My apologies, I posted that before I came to the same understanding regarding the stock recovery.
Like the poster above me mentioned there is a NAND backup of stock 2.3.1 you could restore to which has the stock recovery.

So, just want to make sure I have this straight... You unlock the bootloader, load custom recovery, SU, and now phone is rooted. If you lock the bootloader, you lose root?
For me, I'm not big on custom roms since I just don't have time to keep things up to date or participate in the bug process, but I do like to maintain backups with Titanium (my primary reason for rooting). So by locking the bootloader down I will not be able to use Titanium. Furthermore, unlocking the bootloader wipes the device. So is there a reason one would not want to keep the bootloader unlocked? Have I completely misunderstood the system?

I have just recently started my journey into rooting, I've been in research mode for about a week trying to learn as much as I can but it's SO overwhelming trying to keep up with all the old and new techniques - trying to find out what is the best method to use.

I've watched a few videos on how to root a htc but they've all been made around the time of the phones release, and as we all know each year things get bigger and better in computing, so new techniques might have arrived. So I wanted to ask here what are the full sets of instructions to root a htc one m8 in 2016, starting from watch software to use to back up your phone, how to unlock the bootloader, etc... and using whatever new rooms and kernels people have been using and would recommend.
My aim is, with your help, to make this post a place beginners can go to learn how to do their first root. thankyou in advance.

you want to have all the stages mentioned in that link covered apart from the last firmware guide which is more optional.

How are you getting S-off that isn't free? I had S-off within a week of owning my phone back when it was new, and I'm on Verizon, they are the devil when it comes to modding anything. Have you looked into Sunshine?

Just rechecked into it to refresh my memory, as I've been S-off so long I forgot the method I had used. It was in the pre-Sunshine days. I used Firewater to get S-off (thought Sunshine sounded odd to me for some reason). Didn't cost me anything but a couple minutes of my time. Hope that helps. I wouldn't want to pay for S-off either, it's not really something that I think many people would want to do...

If you have a way to revert it and become S-on again (assuming you're S-off also) I would say you could hide the fact it's been rooted by unrooting and removing any root apps, but don't quote me on that. I rooted back when mine was new, and never looked back at the warranty. Now my phone would have had the warranty expire anyway, so it still doesn't matter. When in doubt, assume the warranty to be void upon rooting, but research a way to revert if it's possible. Not like we have to bother with KNOX at least.

only way is USD $25 for sunshine....can't S-OFF it without other ways.

firewater doesn't work anymore unfortunately. Only way to get S-Off now is sunshine @ USD 25.

Hi I can't root mine . Every time I try to get token it says that it's a incorrect file batch path or something like that? Do you know what the problem is?

Sorry. I have my issue fixed now as I just needed to type cmd on the top of the window to get token to unlock bootloader token. Flashed aicp 14.0 working excellent. Much faster, better battery oh only arm 9.0 pico seemed like the best gapps as I tried other ones didn't work. Man it took a lot of searching to do this as things are posted all over the place

Meaning what exactly? Doesn't see storage (did you select the option on the phone to allow data transfer?) or adb or fastboot? Booted to the custom ROM, or something else (bootloader, recovery)?
When asking for help, please give as much information as possible. One sentence is really never enough info to go on.

I'm new to xda and obviously I'm not a dev. I just want to root my Axon 7 so I can download root apps. What version are you running? B20/B27/B29

If you are not tech savvy, do not attempt the root method. It's for advance user and too many people have bricked their phone already. Just read the threads and you will know what I mean.

And yes I can probably guess the amount of people who bricked their phones. But what if everything were to be laid out simple and I follow the directions in every respect? I'm not going to start rooting until I know what I'm doing. So don't worry. I'm stupid but I'm not THAT stupid.

It might help if you're still on B27. I used it, had root and bootloader still locked, updated to B29 for the security patch, and was able to keep TWRP but lost root. Having TWRP still allows me to flash all the Google pixel stuff though, which is nice

I'm only interest in this if I can successfully unlock the bootloader and stock root is possible...from what I've read, BOTH can be done. According to the root thread, the model I need (A2017G) is listed as unlockable, correct? What's the difference between a2017g B02 and B03??

OK I have read far too many of these questions here about root on B29 - so here goes.
1. Go to the ZTE website, download the stock B20, and install it.
2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/wip-axon-7-root-bootloader-unlokced-t3441204 use this to get TWRP installed on your phone - don't worry about root.
3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-stay-t3461165 UNLOCK the bootloader
4. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68873482&postcount=2 flash boot file, system file, and SuperSU 2.65
Now please relax - anyone here with any dev skills whatsoever are neck deep in other projects (like CM13). B29 hasn't been out long and the only stock image we have from ZTE is B20, which doesn't give us a ton to work with

I forgot to add a final step to that list. I've updated it and here's the new one:
Copy everything off your internal storage that you don't want to lose.
Get all of the files you need from the steps below and put them on your microSD card.
Flash TWRP (recovery) using the method in the OP (B27 file is fine). You don't need to flash the boot image.
Unlock the bootloader (B27 is fine): http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-stay-t3461165
Flash B29: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68873482&postcount=2
Boot phone, set it up, whatever
*Reboot to TWRP, go to Advanced > Terminal and type: reboot disemmcwp
This will leave you with an unlocked bootloader, a fully functioning TWRP (no data encryption issue), and rooted B29. You will not be able to receive OTAs.
*This disables write protection and allows your changes (such as AdAway) to stick with reboot. You need to run this before your changes will stick. You don't have to use TWRP (you could also use a terminal emulator or ADB), but I find that since you have to reboot anyway, it's just as easy to do it in TWRP.

Yes, ZTE still supports bootloader unlocking on the Axon 7. It is currently on hold, but yes, our understanding is that they will be releasing a new process (likely with Nougat).
I can't think of any reason not to unlock now because you can always re-lock if you want to. Who knows what the new process will entail.

Yea well I was hoping the new tool wouldn't kill the warranty but that's wishful thinking, and after some thought I highly doubt that will happen. So time to unlock the bootloader,l and flash TWRP.....soon as I get off work in 9 hours.

I think ZTE will eventually put out a bootloader unlock without killing the warranty. But, yeah, either way it's easy enough to do it on your own now.

Thank you; thank you, THANK YOU!!!!! I tried for an hour or two, using both ADB and Terminal Emulator to apply this "reboot disemmcwp" fix, and I just couldn't get it to work (I'm on B29). Then, I saw your instructions to use TWRP and followed them, and it worked first time, like a charm!

Installing OTA on rooted Yoga Book

Hello,
I am new to rooting. Several months back I rooted my yoga book using magisk. Root was great except that I couldn't install the Nougat update. And because I didn't think I needed it, I did not make a backup of the stock ROM.
I have tried to unroot the device using the magisk uninstaller. The OTA update still failed to install.
What path should I take to unroot my tablet so it can accept updates?

I can confirm that re-flashing an older stock version is possible and restores the ability to install OTAs if you don't have a backup at hand.

Great! I had looked at that post but was unsure what action to take. I downloaded the YB1-X90F_USR_S000196_1611040312_WW06_BP_ROW-flashfiles.zip from the link you posted. Should I follow MarkAllen's instructions in the previous reply to unzip the folder and used fastboot commands to flash the ROM?

For me it was not worth the trip.
I rooted to be able to uninstall NoteSaver because it had an incredibly frustrating glitch when switching to handwriting mode. Several OTA updates did not fix the issue, so I felt great fixing it myself. I didn't use root for anything else. Overall, the time spent troubleshooting and researching was too much. I use the Yoga Book at university to take notes and it was very hard to find time to try to unroot the tablet and get Nougat. I never bricked the device but I spend many hours resetting it.
If I used root to do something more interesting and had more time to play around, sure it might be worth it.

You probably might want to lock the bootloader at the end before you execute the continue command.

And it might happen that you face an error while flashing that oemvars bootloader_policy-oemvars.txt. I couldn't find out why that happened and ignoring it seems to be harmless.
As soon as the system started you need to skip the whole first setup and to restore the country code as explained by MarkAllen. Otherwise you might need to re-start from the beginning after installing an OTA.
General info for people that didn't root their yoga book and just want to re-flash the stock system: You'll need the info from this thread since chances are high that you face problems with the usb drivers.

for getting rid of that window adb could have done the trick.
since there is no better rom around, I guess rooting is waste of time - for this device

you need to input country code to enable keyboard. There are several steps as below :
a) Open ‘’contacts’’ app, create a new local contact ” test”
b) Click search button at contact
c) Input ####6020# code into search bar
d) Browser the country code list, then chose country code you want to use, such as US
e) Then DUT will reboot

Those are exactly the steps you need to follow. It might take some seconds till the new window with the list of all available country codes shows up.
Just use the skip button on the bottom-right of the screen during the setup.

free XZP Pie rooting on Mac, is it possible without CS degree?

At the risk of being barked at by the spirited young hackers on this forum:
After days of searching the interwebs, I am close to resetting to factory settings and returning this thing, even though I really like the phone itself.
Admittedly, I'm a total Android virgin and know only what many hours of googl'ing have left behind (it's all a blur, at this point), but after all of my attempts to use the common rooting suspects (KingoRoot, King Root, iRoot, etc.), I sit here more confused than I can handle.
First attempts at figuring out adb and fastboot made me realise I am in way over my head.
Anyone know of a way to root my XZP running Pie, from my Mac, for free (if at all possible), without first having to get a degree in computer science. I can stumble my way around Terminal, if given clear instructions, but that's where it ends.
hope someone can help.
I really want to get the EU firmware flashed onto this thing, with the modem working as designed for the US market, and hopefully use this thing as a router and many other things that require root access.
But I also read the thread about people like me, who don't know much about Android, ruining their bootloaders and then coming here for help/support...so the question for me arises is: reset to factory settings and return it, before I get myself into quicksand territory, or do whatever it takes to figure it out (with the help of the esteemed community).
It's just such a nice phone, and I miss the iOS jailbreaking days so much, that this would be the perfect antidote.
Anyone care to help?

If you are unsure, which phone you will buy...... Make first of all your choices... Look in xda if the device is supported and following the thread

yeah, I am set on the XZP, as my first Android phone. It serves my primary purpose of being a little presentation device for my 4K video and photography work perfectly, I already enjoy it as a very good Hi-Res music player, it will hopefully serve me as a little portable router/VPN, etc. once I figure out how to root it, and it was a great deal, for a used one, for so much power. But I also want to be able to use its fingerprint sensor, here in the USA, and for that...
So when you say that "a very good manual" is out there, would you be so kind as to share a link? I tried to follow so many methods, at this point, that I am at the end of my wits.

thanks again, mad0701...I was out riding all day and just skimmed over that link...first reaction: this is more advanced than I feel confident tackling...I fear that a one wrong action on my part might leave me in a situation where I can't even get the phone back to factory settings, and won't be able to return it anymore (for which I have one week left).
I'll read through the manual in more detail, maybe tomorrow, and if it seems that I can actually do all that, successfully, then maybe I will give it a try. But since I don't even know what the TA is, or the TWRP version, it may be something I may not wanna get into at this time...only so many hours in the day.

Lots of people keep pointing at this thread without actually reading it. There still isn't a way to relock your bootloader with your saved TA partition. Yes you can save your individualy encrypted key, but then what?
You still need to unlock your phone to get permanent root, with no way of putting the key back in place, so you still need a 'fixed' kernel
If you want an easy way to root your phone, as you admit yourself your android experience is limited., then I would recomend Xperifix
@sToRm// wrote a one stop shop program that did everything, but then took his work to a private website as he wanted to charge for all the hours that he put into it.
The original thread is here, this would tell you what to do and the drivers you need to install (important). Then the go to the Xperiafix website and pay your $20.
I used it to root my XZ1 compact and it really was as easy as plug it in and follow instructions.
The only probelm with this is that there still isn't a root available for Pie firmware, so his fix is based on Oreo builds.
Lots of people speak badly of Xperiafix 'why pay for a fix when you can get it for free?'
Yea, but free is complicated and I'm happy to pay for easy.
Edit: To answer your original question, I'm not sure there is a Pie root kenel for a stock rom available yet, I know @janjan posted a Pie kernel on the XZ1compact thread, so it's just a matter of time before he updates the XZ premium
You could go with a custom rom to get rooted Pie, read the instructions and decide if you're up for it.

I totally missed the Mac part....

Alright, u need adb and fastboot for mac.
If you will find newer instructions use it, here is the first thing I found.
Unlock ur device here using fastboot, it clearly written there how to do it.
Find latest twrp recovery in this forum.
Use fastboot again.
"fastboot flash recovery your.recovery.img"
Then, using this recovery u need to flash latest magisc.
I've gave u enough information, with minimum efforts u will be able to find everything u need to do it. Plus u will learn something useful.

the manual looking complicated but it only took 2 hours for me, and if u backup and restore your TA partition, u dont need any drm fix for all firmwares, and dont pay for any useless programs like xperifix(the guy on upper comments always advertise this useless windows program)
for rooting, its very easy on pie

I really appreciate all of y'all's input...but, to be honest, I understand too little of it, at the moment, to feel inclined to dive into executing some of those instructions.
I mean, it looks like I was given enough info to have a chance to root and flash my XZP successfully, but I may just hold off for a bit, maybe return this one and wait until I can either score an XZP that's already been rooted and flashed with the mixed EU/US firmware, or wait until I can afford to get a newer device, which has all of the features I am looking for already working: 4K screen, fingerprint sensor, and preferably being a Sony...if such a device exists now.
