Need help getting TiBu info out of old back up - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello XDA, long time no visit. I have had my Note 2 catastrophically fail, can't be recovered, nothing, I was told the motherboard was fried. Upgraded to the Note 4, which I love and am fairly happy with just leaving stock (since I have no choice, it's AT&T's version) but I have an issue. I have data in my old TiBu backups that I really would love to recover, but I can't, because I can't root the phone. Does anyone have a creative way of recovering data from TiBu? Or am I just basically screwed, which is where I think this is headed....any help would be greatly appreciated

For apps to have some folders in the /data partition require root like TiBu and root is not available for Lollipop. You can try to downgrade to Kitkat from here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD50yW8e-EE&feature=youtu.be and use this method to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/paid-software/supersu-please-t3110954 after rooting with the latest version of kingoroot. Beware that if you downgrade to 4.4.4 it will trigger knox to 0x1 which will invalidate your warranty.

Hi Ann, I'll ask around:good:

Could you setup an emulator, install TiBu, restore then gather data.
I've word about Genymotion. Just a thought.
You could also ask someone to restore for you and send the data, but that comes down to trust. Moderators are trustworthy so I'm sure any of us would be happy to do it and send any data without looking into anything of course.

I hate to say it but without root, You know where this is headed. To be honest you will save a ton of time just redoing them.

Partially screwed I say...
All apps don't support the sync adapter for sync data feature.
If you can't sync that data,
what you can do is get a really cheap rootable phone/tablet.
Restore with TiBu
And Sync the data.
Any cheap phone is way better than emulators like Genymotion or AVDs.
For apps which don't use sync adapters ,root permissions are required so it's pointless.

Can you root without wiping?

So I just got my N4 two days ago, and I already installed all my apps, downloaded my files etc, now I want to root like I did on my previous phone (galaxy s3) but now im reading that it will full wipe the phone! WTF? why is that? In my s3 i just downloaded a file, pushed a button and BAM it was rooted, now here im seeing that the proccess isnt that easy and that it will also wipe everything in the phone, is there a way to keep my stuff the way it is and get rooted? and if not, can someone explain to me why is that wipe needed? and will it ever be possible to root without having to wipe?,
Thanks in advance, I've just been on android for like 4 months so Im no expert, when i read all the crazy stuff about the bootloader etc i get scared we've all been noobs right?... right...?

It isn't obtaining root that wipes the phone, it happens when you unlock the bootloader. Yes the bootloader must be unlocked to root.

There may very well be an exploit that can be run from within Android to gain root privileges, but no one has bothered to look for one because it's immensely easier to just unlock the bootloader, throw on a custom recovery, and flash a zip to install root.
I know its frustrating having to setup your phone and redo it all over again. To make it easier on yourself I used MyBackupPro since I was not rooted, it restored pretty much everything including app data, and home screen icons. Try it out.
Then when you root backup with Titanium

[Q] General questions about motochopper

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 on AT&T. This is my first android and I'm trying to get a grasp on rooting as an ex-jailbreaker. I've tried reading and searching but unfortunately I just need to ask some specifics.
My understanding is that the current root for this phone is derived from a Motorola root and that it does not include a way to make backups. I am eager to root but I really don't want to take extra risk than is necessary. Is something like CWM required to backup your phone in a way that protects you against accidentally messing up the filesystem? And is there any way to get something like CWM on this phone yet?
I see that there is now a custom recovery for this phone on galaxys4root dot com but can I even use it without something like CWM.
I'd appreciate any info, thanks for your patience.

We cant have CWM until bootloader is unlocked (assuming you have the US AT&T version)
That being said, seeing how there is no custom ROMs you can use ODIN as a kind of backup. It'll wipe and then install factory /system partition, leaving /data alone (you can wipe /data in stock recovery if needed).
CWM works better as it backs up YOUR phone (including mods and /data).

Would a stock firmware be enough to get me back up if I mess up my phone with root access? That's my main concern.

You can use either Kies or Odin and the stock factory firmware to completely return to factory stock, but be careful with ODIN, if you check the wrong options it can hard brick your phone.
MotoChopper
I would like to know ...
I rooted my S4 with Motochopper and I realized that my boot animation changed (to the one Samsung used in older models...) Is it easy to put back the new one ?

Will you root given Marshmellow will do app data backup? (Poll included)

I've been rooting devices since my first android device. And using Titanium Backup, to always restore my app data across devices. Or restoring Nandroid backups at times. But it seems with that, upgrades to new OS have become more of a hassle. Since I can not simply let the OTA apply its self.
Having to change to stock recovery depending on the device and in some more recent cases, having to wipe data for the update to go well. It has become a bit of a pain, harder than it used to be.
With Marshmellow doing app data backup. I'm going to try keeping things virgin, no rooting. I may not need to continue with Titanium Backup and since OTAs will work flawlessly, I won't have much personal need to get into the system file area.
So what about you? Respond to the poll and give your take .
I've always done clean install of ROMs, and I always start from scratch with each ROM flash. I'll root as soon as there's a root out.
I mistakenly marked "Yes" to my poll .

Root/Unlocked Bootloader is 75% of the reason why I go with Android. I like the feeling of knowing that I "own" the device and can do with it as I please.

+1. I got rid of my Verizon S6 because it was way too locked down.
lol asking this on a dev forum... I'd be surprised if anyone says no. It's more than just app back ups. I think phone should ship with root, just enable it/ disable it in the development options. It's like being a standard user on your own laptop instead of administrator... I mean why?
I can see this option on Nexus devices and non-carrier branded devices, but it would never be allowed with a Carrier device. It would be like a work laptop being allowed on that network with software meant to bypass firewalls. Bigger companies will never allow it because of security risks. That being said, I do agree that it should be an option for everyday users.

Restore lost data on the Verizon S5 with Lollipop BOG5

Is there any way to restore lost data on the Verizon S5 with Lollipop BOG5?
I lost my data to a spontaneous factory reset and I did not have a backup. Talking to Verizon and Samsung, I was left with the impression that there is no way to get my data back. After searching the internet it discovered that there are recovery programs that can indeed restore deleted data and I pursued a few. Unfortunately, they do not work unless the phone is rooted which will void the warrantee. I am ready to give up my warrantee and go for it, but then I found solutions for all operating systems except the one I have (Lollipop with BOG5).
A friend highly recommended this forum and I did some searching and it looks like the answer is the same here. Rooting the phone is something I would like to try but for now, all I want to do is restore the lost data on my phone. Can anyone suggest a solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
POST SCRIPT: Just reread my post and want to clarify, I did read all the posts indicating that there is no way to root my phone. The unique request here is whether I can recover my phone's data without rooting. On the one hand it is comforting to know that it would be hard for someone to steal my data but on the other hand I do not understand the point of blocking me from recovering my data as well as other functions. (Verizon = Apple?)

im not sure if this app would work on a non rooted phone or what but i heard of an app called disk digger i think it might only recover pictures but hey theres one peice of a puzzle if i can find the link for it ill share it here http://diskdigger.org/ it does work without root apperently so give it a go and i hope that helps ill see if i can find anything else
Thank you very much. I did try Disk Digger with limited success. I was only able to recover a few photos. The full scan option requires root and I suspect it will find a lot more if rooted. That being said, I will see if I can download on PC to recover the SD card which also got wiped (and had most of the photos).

There was an article last week on a new update from Chainfire with the ability to root Lollipop. I have not been able to find any threads on this forum about the Verizon S5. Were we left out or is it perhaps still coming? It seems that this one would make a lot of people happy.

Trying to Root AT&T SM-G935A for Titanium before I return it

I haven't root a phone since my old note edge which I used to flash constantly LOL
Anyway I have an AT&T S7 Edge SM-G935A on 7.0
I'm doing a warranty swap out and I want to root it so I backup my apps with data with Titanium and then get this thing back to stock without tripping knox.
And of course I'll have to root my replacement SM-G935A so I can restore my backups.
I've read so many different walkthroughs on here I'm really not sure which way to go right now....
(And yes I did try one but it just kept getting hung up early in the process, ADB was getting mounting errors at certain steps)
I'd appreciate any guidance.
I've used ODIN and ADB in the past I'm just trying to find a walkthrough with the downloads I need and be mindful of knox so I don't screw up my swap out.
I'd appreciate ANY help.
Thanks a lot guys,
Kenny
Sounds like a lot of work to root just to back up stuff. I would just use Samsung smartswitch as you should still have the old phone when you receive the new one use the otg connector to switch data between phones. You can also save it to an external SD card then transfer SD to new phone if you prefer. If you really want to root find the T-Mobile carrier version post and they have a detailed post. I can link it a little later if you need. But smart switch much easier.
Who closes a poll after one vote? Anyways, go for the Note 8. As for root, try this guide. https://forum.xda-developers.com/tm...eres-how-rooted-nougat-s7-edge-g935t-t3567502
