Phone not showing nearby places with location services on. - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Currently the phone has location services on in battery saver mode with location history off. After updating to 6.0.1 or some new version of the phone app I have been unable to search for nearby places in app. The toggles for it have been turned on and off multiple times, turned the phone on and off, played with turning location settings on in different modes with the location history on and off in each scenario.
Haven't tried clearing the cache and I don't find it to be a big enough problem to warrant a factory reset.
Has anyone else had this problem and/or come up with a solution?

I noticed this too. Sometimes, some applications such as True Caller and the Google dialer seem to fail to recognize an internet connection is active. A quick airplane mode toggle usually fixes this for a few hours, sometimes days. I can't seem to pinpoint the cause, but true dialer tells me I'm not connected even if I'm connected, whether it's 4G, 3G or Wi-Fi

I tried installing True Caller and cycling airplane mode. True caller didn't seem to be locating me correctly. It was searching for places though. If I would search for "Best Buy" it would bring up numbers in locations all over the planet. Did you have any issues with it not searching nearby locations in your area?

Actually, true caller will only help with incoming calls. The google dialer now gives me nearby locations, but it seems to have problems for a few minutes while switching between Wi-fi/4G/3G. After a few minutes on a particular connection, it gives me all the locations I'm searching for. You could try toggling the option off and on under the dialer settings -> Caller ID by Google. Also try making your number discoverable on the same screen. It's possible that google won't share other's numbers with you unless you share your own number.

Is it just me???? 3g audio quality issue

I bought a dash 3g!!!
but.... it had an issue with a clicking sound every so often on the other end of the call, several people reported hearing the same sort of sound. i called my phone and could hear it as well, its like a switching channels kinda sound.
I tried everything i could think of, turning off 3g, turning off bluetooth, trying with or without the headset, new sim card, moving to many different locations, but still it kept happening so i exchanged it and twice viola! same thing on 3 different phones...... am i alone on this guys???
Have you tried turning off voice privacy in the settings? It's possible that for whatever reason that is toggling on and off and could explain the click. By the way, next time try having a more descriptive topic name and using fewer question marks and exclamation points.

to get to ur voice privacy settings :
settings > phone > more... > "voice privacy" - disable it, and see how that works out.
If this is any help, I'm in Europe with an original HTC Snap.
No voice issues like you described. Sound is loud and clear.

What's causing internet connections while roaming?

Hi folks,
Just back from my first holiday in France with my HD2 and, despite setting weather, Facebook, Twitter and email not to automatically download while roaming, something seemed to be establishing a GPRS/EDGE connection occasionally.
Any suggestions on what this could be or how to identify it?
Thanks,
Kris
stocks? weather? time sync?
If you dont want to have any data charges then I strongly recomend NoDatainRoaming by Dynamic+. It automatically switches off data connection (same as modoco no data) when you leave your home area but when you get back to your home area it turns it back on. No more forgeting to turn it off.

Same here .
i just returned from the USA .
before i walked on the plane i turned off all data connections .
i turned on my phone to take some pictures with it while in the USA . came home to find out i have about 120$ of fee's .
:/
you guys are lucky
I took a trip up to Gunma prefecture in Japan for new year. I came back to Taiwan and I had 800 us dollars phone charge... I didn't even take pictures with the phone I just brought it with me!
Had a similar issue in Greece. Footprints and google maps both seem to automatically start the data connection when they start. I have a feeling that the compass may do as well. Could be something to do with quick GPS trying to download updates?
I've been using modoco no data to good effect. May give NoDatainRoaming a go if it's automatic
same thing on mu dubai trip.. .These connections turn on automatically .
NoData works for me, just configure before you power down the phone to fly
RSS Reader has no Roaming setting so if you've got it on AUTO, best switch that off.
A quick search would certainly have brought the answer to all of you!
Don't be lazy!
Anyway, here's the solution: Go to "All Settings" --> Connections --> Connections --> Advanced --> Select Networks
There, simply select "My Work Network" everywhere.
With that setting, your phone is only allowed to use WiFi. There's no need for third party tools or anything, it's that simple.
My Location?
I think it is more important to find out what is making data connection and how to disable it, rather than using nodata to suppress everything. What if you really need to use HSPA/GRPS during roaming? You need to know how to enable data connection and do your thing without the HD2 automatically doing a lot of other data traffic in the background.
Alex,
That's exactly my concern - I'd like to be able to use the net knowing the HD2 isn't going to pull down a load of other stuff as well.
The weather tab is set not to connect while roaming, stocks are the same and RSS is configured not to automatically update at all.
The only two other things people mentioned are time sync and my location - how can I tell if those are connecting while roaming.
Kris
does anyone know how my location actually works?... cell broadcasting, gps, or how?... i set up the send no location info in settings and automaticly decline htc location service and the phone still knows were i am....

I have no idea HD2 is doing timesync, or how I can disable it. As for my location, disable it in the Settings tab.

I believe phone gets cell tower ID via normal handshake operation. Then it asks Google to translate it to a city name. It is the second part that consumes internet data traffic.
There is yet another possibility of hidden data traffic. I think HD2 has AGPS, but there is not interface to enable/disable it. Similar to My Location, AGPS translates cell tower ID to location, and triangulates to pin point where you are. Much quicker than GPS, but not as precise. If it is so, then it explains why taking pictures leads to data traffic.

3G connectivity issue when leaving wifi zone

So, I've done quite some looking around in this forum and others but have not been able to to find an answer...
Here's the issue: when leaving an area with wifi connection, my galaxy s refuses to connect via 3G. Sometimes the "H"/"3G" is shown but no data is being transfered, sometimes the "H"/"3G" doesn't even show up. I've tried switching to plane mode and back, but that only helps sometimes. Switching to 2G and back doesn't help either, neither does re-selecting my provider from the provider list in the wireless settings or turning wifi on and off.
I'm on JF3 still. And here's the question: Is this an Eclair bug or firmware related? And is there a workaround, besides switching to plane mode and back every time I leave the house?
Your help is appreciated!
Thomas
I have similar issue too. I hated it.
It appears to be an Android problem.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2207
I have this problem too, running an optus one.
I think sometimes.. going into the APn seetings, clicking on the field, dont change anything and press okay.. so it refreshes the APN settings and it works?
Or I rescan for networks. and choose my optus provider again.
Such a fluke.. that first few days i got this phone didnt have this problem.. and now it does... hope it gets fixed soon.
Okay, thanks. will try my luck with the android developers...
I checked out the link to google code and there seems to be a solution: restoring the default apn settings (hit the menu button when in the apn list). Seems to work, at least for now, my 3G connection came on when I left wifi after being on wifi for a few hours.

T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling Issues

Anybody else having issues with T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling? Mine connects after a reboot, stays connected, but after a while it disconnects from WiFi calling and more often than not it doesn't want to re-connect again until I reboot the phone.
I suspect it may have something to do with the Doze mode in Android M, but I'm not sure. It feels like once it gets in doze mode it doesn't want to connect to Wi-Fi calling again.
Any known ways to force it to reconnect to WiFi calling, without rebooting?
Not sure what's happening, but I'm not receiving incoming phone calls when connected to WiFi calling. I've turned it off at home (have decent enough voice service) for the time being.

I've seen that too, it's definitely flaky.
Came here just to get more info on this issue. Flaky on mine as well. I'm on T-Mobile. Sometimes users will hear me well, sometimes they cannot. It's typically most flaky when I'm right on the cusp of getting a tower signal. I'll receive a WiFi call and all will sound fine, but as soon as I move close to a window the call quality drops and users on the other end can barely make out what I'm saying. Almost like it has a hard time deciding between WiFi or the cell tower.

Do you have it set to prefer wifi calling?
First day in office tomorrow on a 6p, will test this.

I've had it set to both at different times in the past few weeks. Right now it's set to prefer WiFi because I have poor to non-existant celluar coverage indoors (both at work and home). My wife's old LG G2 has flawless WiFi calling at home.
I have mine set to "Wi-Fi Preferred". It's worked without any problems that I know of both at home and at work, for both calling and text messaging.

This has also been my experience, Connects instantly and stays connected. This is also the first phone I have had that actually hands off to mobile network when leaving a WiFi area without dropping the call. The galaxy s6 advertised this but never once did it work. I get pretty good service at my house and honestly didn't know that I would be able to use WiFi calling when I bought my 6p. Pleasantly surprised.
After a few days, text messages won't send. I get an error -1 code. Had to turn off Wifi=preferred.

See whether this helps:
Dial *#*#4636#*#* as a "normal" call from the stock phone dialer
You should see a menu
Tap Phone information
Scroll down
Tap "Turn ON SMS over IMS" button (make sure that after the button actually says "Turn OFF SMS over IMS" -- this means it's currently ON)
Based on info from this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus5/comments/1vahlr/fyi_if_youre_on_tmobile_your_sms_is_sent/
I would not touch any other settings in that menu and if it doesn't help, you should probably revert it back.
Now I'm not sure where these settings are persisted and if they get reverted back when a new radio is flashed for example. Does anyone have more info?
It works but I've found that it causes my phone to stay awake, so I've turned it off. I'd rather lose 1-3% overnight and not 8-10%.

Gave it a try and re enabled wifi calling preferred. I'll post an update, but the error usually takes a few days before showing up.
My Wi-Fi calling was working fine, then I flashed the update to 6.0.1 and it doesn't work at all. It's enabled in settings, strong WiFi signal, but it never indicates Wi-Fi calling.
I had the opposite experience, I updated to 6.0.1 and now WiFi Calling is a lot more reliable than before. Still not perfect, but much better.

Wifi-Calling T-mobile?

Hello Everyone,
Does anyone know if this phone supports Wifi-Calling via T-mobile?:cyclops:
It does. I tried it last night. Turned to airplane and turned back on wifi, made a call just fine over wifi on T-Mobile.
I had no idea it could do that, but since my house is a bit of a Faraday Cage my G5+ starts the call as a provider call (T-Mobile) & jumps over to WiFi as soon as the connection is made. Totally threw me for a loop, I've wanted this feature on an OON phone for several years... way to go, Moto... oops, I mean Lenovo
Dave in San Jose
I might be missing something but it doesn't say WiFi call when set to WiFi preferred and I'm on WiFi. I try turning airplane mode on and WiFi on and get a message that I have to connect to a network. In TMobile.

Did you enable it in settings? I've found it to be a little finicky sometimes, but it usually works pretty well.
It works but for me caused SMS/MMS delivery issues with the wifi router i was on. So i turned it off. I can turn it on when i need it for now, no need.
Get an sms app that supports forcing sms over cell even if you are on wifi like textra.
Sorry to bother, but it doesn't work for me. I have wifi preferred and wifi calling enabled, but it doesn't work when I do airplane mode-with-wifi on.
Any chance this could be due to APN settings? Can someone with this working share their APN? I know on my previous phone (Nexus 6), the T-Mobile APN settings were confusing and tricky. Thanks in advance!
Turning on airplane mode got wifi calling and SMS to work for me no problem. I have "wifi-calling preferred" selected in settings - is there any good way to get it to switch over automatically when cell service is poor? would like to not have to hit airplane mode every time.

Actually, you shouldn't need to turn on airplane mode. That seems to just be a way to confirm it is actually using wifi since it ensures cell radios are turned off. It will automatically switch if you do not turn on airplane mode. If you look at the phone when a call is connected, it will confirm that it is a wifi call. This is a small drawback to the Moto G5 Plus software. Unlike other phones that actually tell you that the phone will use wifi in the notification area, this phone only acknowledges the wifi calling after the call is made or received. It would be nice if they would change that.
However, I am having a problem with mine not working properly on wifi. It seems that calls will not always go through to my phone. The phone will ring, but won't let me answer the call. It will quite often show the same call repeatedly even though I cannot answer the call. The caller tells me they hear nothing the entire time it should be ringing and eventually gives a busy signal. It doesn't even go to voice mail so they can leave a message. Sometimes it works perfectly, but there is no way to know when it's not going to work. I used to be able to get it to work again if I switched off wifi and connected to LTE, then made a test call before turning wifi back on. Now I can't seem to get that to work any more. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
Hi brothers,
Please, can you share some screenshots of these VoWIFI options in settings?
I feel the "reteu" (european) version doesn't have enabled VoLTE and VoWIFI.
