Ever since the Gingerbread update (I've manually updated to 2.3.3 stock by using the full image, wiped everything before), I occasionally lose network access completely. Not just data, but also calls.
My Wifi is enabled and that seems to remain connected, but my mobile network seems to just die.
I'm on Vodafone UK, London Area.
Interestingly, sometimes the bar lights are still showing as good reception, but i can't make calls and people can't call me.
Furthermore, when i search for networks it normally returns an Error. giving little information (something along the lines of: error while searching for networks)
Cycling airplane mode does not help. Sometimes power-cycling the phone doesn't help.
What does help, is when i click on "Use only 2G networks" - that seems to connect fine and i can make calls again. then, i can *sometimes* successfully go back to 3g but un-ticking the use only 2g networks.
I'm using stock 2.3.3
Baseband version:
32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04
I tired updating the radio at one point to 5.12 but that seemed to have been so bad that i couldn't connect at all.
I think, that if my Wifi was turned off and I would use the network data connection, my "voice connection" (i.e. calls) would work fine - that is because i never see this problem when i'm outside using network data.
Is someone else seeing this?
Yeah, me too. I'm on T-Mobile in the US. It happens about once a week.

I use this workaround after many hours of investigation into the problem on various forums and with Vodafone...
1. O the keypad, type *#*#4636#*#*
2. From the menu select "Phone information"
3. Go down the list to "Select preferred network type" which, by default on Vodafone, is set to "WCDMA preferred".
4. Click on the drop down menu and select "GSM auto (PRL).
5. Exit all and reboot.
This not only improved my signal but also my battery life as well as I was not constantly seeking WCDMA. Don't worry, if you need data and are within a 3.5G area, it will use WCDMA.
Give it a try, you have nothing to lose and can always switch back.
Hope this helps.
Will give that a try.
I think at one point i had it set to that...
Will update if it solved my problem.

To be honest with you itay1, I had a few problems last year with the Vodafone firmware.
Not the least of which was the inability to send MMS's when connected to WiFi. and being given the run-around by Vodafone, who at one stage or another, blamed everything and everybody.
In the end I rooted my phone and switched to Cyangen Mod's and since then have had no problems. Besides which, IMHO, the CM7 stable version, released today, is far superior to the stock Gingerbread I tried from Google.
Thanks for the tips.
So i gave 5.12 Radio another try + your change for GSM auto (PRL) and so far it seems better.
I haven't lost network connectivity yet - however.. i'm starting to think it really might be up to Vodafone. Maybe they have network failures that they are not reporting.
Definitely going to switch at the end of contract. I hear GiffGaff have pretty awesome deals!

For some time now when I disable wireless 3G just is not working.
But I can not relate it to any update. Also the provider says there is nothing wrong...
For some weeks it helped if I went to airplane mode and back.
Now even this is not working anymore
As I switch between wireless and 3G a lot, it really starts to suck!
When I switch from wireless to 3G then 3G fails to get data it seems.
The icon in the bar shows a sending arrow flashing but no recieving one.
Like it tries to send something and it does not work.
I can not open any page in the browser and so on...
Anyone stepped over this?
I had a similar problem in a earlier firmware but that was solved by some update.
Now its back and it is even worse
I have bought my Lg G2 last saturday. I'm still researching the phone and so far it's great except one thing. Problem is when the phone is removed from charging it refuses to establish a data connection. This happened to me twice and every time in the morning after the charging.
Solution is restarting the phone. If not, it just won't connect . When i go to the settings it is turn on, but there are no arrows at the top of the screen and it doesn't work. Otherwise , after the restart it works normally all day. I keep turning it on and of and it works fine.
I think it is a software problem, since I have a network signal, but I'm not sure.
Is anyone having a similar problem?
Thanks

No, I have read about that today , but as a solution for a samsung g3 . I will try in the morning, because after the restart it works perfectly all day . Do you think it is a software problem?
Are you using different charger and cable or the originals that came with the phone?

I'm using original usb cable and charger, but with extender , because of the electricity. Phone is from England, and I'm from Serbia .
After the last night charging I had the same problem, but this time I used toggle between Airplane and Data . After that everything worked fine.

Hi, i noticed this too since a couple of days... Trying To figure out what the issue is ( in possession for 2 Weeks)
I can re-establish data connection without reboot by clicking in select automatically in network operators in data /mobile networks settings. So it will reregister on the network.
Guess we need to notify lg about this issue/bug for a fix.
my sprint g2, will drop data connection occasionally when switching from wifi to 3g or from lte to 3g. so i would say there is some kind of real issue here
Same problem after rooting
I'm having the same issue, the data connection drops, mostly after going into stand-by. The problem started to occur a few days later after rooting the LG G2. I have tried the temporary solutions above with succes, but there is no final solution to it. I wonder if the device intentionally starts to brick itself after rooting, I heard the LG G2 has a lot of root checkers (says the noob).
Anyone contacted LG yet? Or tried flashing their device?
I'm having a similar issue with my G2.
After switching off wifi, data won't start.
I have to click search network then it would go on.
Would it be something to do with the modem?
When i had my Samsung gs2, I had problems with random dropouts, then I found a way to flash new modem software and all worked fine with better reception and no dropouts.
I sometimes loose network connection completely (no service) when switching from 3g to 2g or vice versa, no issue with 4g what I've seen.
Though I have this BBS, looks very alarming I must say, does anyone have similar to this:https://db.tt/aKsiw0Xe

issue fixed
hi after a recent software update (mine was D80210c-HKG-XX, build number JDQ39B,...) the data connection issue is solved for me (also made a LG support case).
But my NFC funtcion stopped working now...
Same here. Ive got this issue after rooting the G2. It cannot connect to mobile data after Im away from wifi connection. Switch airplain mode on and off helps but its annoying even if u have more email account. Another problem after rooting was freezing and restarting phone after mouse connection. But next day was everything fine and its untill today. Have anyone similar issues with custom roms?

I am rooted running Digital Dream on a Verizon VS980 with 12B radio installed. I loose data or go down to 1x all the time. I have to toggle airplane mode or reboot to re-establish 4G connection. Is there something else I can do. I love the phone but the data thing is annoying. Is the antenna really that bad in these phones?

I think and Im almost 100% sure that this must be only software problem, because when the data is runnig, it runs fast and stable. No additional inconvenience.I hope next upgrade (update) will fixt it. However Im really surprising that u have same problem on custom ROM. Im using only airplain mode to switch the data on. I needent to restart device, but it is really really annoying.
Hi everyone, as I wrote before got data connection issue while getting away from wifi. The data cannot start automatic. I found out that it happens only if GSM/ WCDMA /LTE automatic connection is selected in the settings. When I adjust GSM/ WCDMA automatic connection - everything is ok. I was trying automatic switching and runs perfect. So if u dont use LTE, better say if the WCMDA is enought for u, it can be less annoying solution as manualy turn on/ off airplain mode. I hope next update fix this issue at all. Have nice day.

It seems better (still not perfect) I wiped everything including formatting the system partition and re-installed... But thanks for the replay!
Also, I don't have to reboot ... toggleing airplane mode takes care of it, i was just saying reboot is another alternative.

This is definitely a software problem, but I have no idea how to fix it... when I first rooted everything was fine (I was on Malladus). Then I went to CM-based ROM and it was still working well.... then I updated my PRL (*228) and things started going south and I haven't been able to get it back working since.
I'm thinking of going back to Stock and starting over from scratch to see if I can fix the problem.... if anyone has an update on this issue I would greatly appreciate some advice!
potential fix for this issue?
Hi everyone. I had this phone for about 3 months. and the data connection thing has been annoying for me.. So the problem to start off with is at first I dont seem to get LTE at all during the first 2 days. I found online that the 3845#*802# or *#*#4636#*#* got me into adding LTE back into the system but problem is when I reboot. it goes back to WCDMA only or GSM WCDMA. and I lose LTE. But atleast I have LTE when I didnt reboot it. Then I found another problem which is losing data after I used LTE for a while. It won't reconnect until I reboot the phone or SOMETIMES it will return if I go into airplane mode and back. After some long research. I found this to be working for me.
So this is my story of how I got it to work for me
To start off with. This is what I am using
LG G2 D802
Android version 4.4.2
Baseband Version M8974A-AAAANAZM-1.0.190082
Kernel Version 3.4.0
Build KOT49I.D80220b
Software D80220b
My provider is Metropcs so if anyone has other issues with other providers. I don't know if this will help you.
First thing this phone needs is it has to be rooted - that part you do your own research and wont be hard since you are on XDA!!!
Then to get LTE working, you will need to type in 3845#*802# on your phone to get into the hidden menu
LTE-only ---> Modem Settings ---> RAT selection and select GSM / WCDMA / LTE Auto (will display SUCCESS) tap OK
This will give you LTE from the phone but it will not give you this option in your Mobile Networks / Network mode section (Preferred network mode) Atleast it didn't display it for me.
For my phone I had to edit the build.prop file for it to show it in the preferred network mode list.
In the build.prop file. You will have to look for this line and change the 9 to a 11. I've also saw some post about it being not a 9 and have to change to 12 for some networks. ALSO MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT CHANGE IT TO A NUMBER 0. It will crash the phone.
From
ro.telephony.default_network=9
To
ro.telephony.default_network=11
After this I got me LTE connection but issue with the lost of settings after reboot started. So next part helps with the reconnection after reboot. I got this from a post in XDA So give credit to the person that posted this. Sorry if I dont have it handy as I wrote this
- Root
- Install and activate Xposed fw
- Install and activate Intelli3G module
- In build.prop change ro.telephony.default_network=9 from 9 to 11
- Create a Tasker profile of type Event -> System -> Device Boot
- Associate the profile to a new Task of type Misc -> Send Intent
- Configure the task by setting in the "Action" field the value "action.intelli3g.CHANGE_NETWORK_TYPE" and in the first "Extra" field set the value "extra.intelli3g.NETWORK_TYPE:10"
Doing this got my reconnection after reboot fixed. and LAST is the problem of randomly losing data connect until I reboot the phone. and after a long test.. This is my result. The phone lost connection due to trying to connect to LTE with non existing band. I don't know too much about those but from my testing. This is how I made my phone worked and it has been working for the last 2 weeks without any issue.
Go back into the hidden menu with 3845#*802#
LTE-only --> Modem Settings --> LTE Band Selection
Here you will see a Band with a number.
MetroPCS supports band 2, 4, 5 and 12
Since this phone doesnt have 12. You only select 2, 4 and 5 then just push back until the hidden menu closes.
Other providers. I dont know what band that they use. but i am guessing if you only select the bands that company supports. You might not have that issue with losing data anymore.
Please press thanks if this works for you.
Hi guys,
Getting this message upon connevting to virtually every wireless network sinse rootibg my phone, is there a root tweak to disable betwork quality checking ? On a G900F
Thanks
Anyone?
You should be able to turn off smart network switching under wifi settings that will solve it.
Nice one thank you! I will see what happens!
turning off smart networks helps, but if the wifi signal is too poor it will not connect anyway

u cannot change that.
ready to connect when network quality improves
We have two Galaxy 5s in our home (AT&T and T-Mobile). Both just started getting this message last night. "ready to connect when network quality improves"
Its multiple access points, multiple networks. Eating battery like crazy. Dropping and reestablishing connections to WiFi every 15 to 60 seconds.
Pain in the @zz
Turn off "smart network switch"
I also started getting "ready to connect when network quality improves" messages constantly as the network connected and disconnected. Turning off the "smart network switch" option fixed the problem. I also leave the annoying Samsung Connections Optimizer turned off.
Smart Network Switch Off?
I just got my S5 about 6 weeks ago. I have had NO issues until this week. A few days ago, even though wifi notifications were turned OFF - I kept getting this "connected to network name" message on the bottom of my phone. When I went into wifi settings this morning, I noticed it would switch from connected (very strong signal strength) to "waiting for signal quality to improve". It constantly goes back and forth - 5 seconds or so on each. This is not an issue on any other device connected to the wifi router at my home and I just tried it at work - happens here too.
I checked to make sure wifi notifications were off - they were - but the pop up still appears over and over. I think that's another issue separate from this because if notifications are off you should not be getting any!
I have done as suggested here and turned off the smart network switch, however, does that now mean that I will be switched back and forth every 5 seconds from data to wifi? That defeats the purpose of connecting to wifi to save on monthly data plan charges.
AFTER noticing this problem this morning, I went to see if there were any software updates - there were (Lollipop). I did download that, but no change.
How does turning this off affect where my phone pulls from? Uses data or wifi?
Thanks for any help!

+1 with exact same timelines/symptoms and upgraded to Lollipop and no diff too.
I started getting this message on my S5 last night! The connection will hold for about 10-15 seconds before reverting to LTE.
Tried resetting router settings, playing with different wireless settings - changing channel width and turning the visibility on and off.
Then "forgot" the network and readded it again.
It seems to be holding a stable connection without it dropping and was able to download a few items from the play store without dropping.
Will update if it changes.
Same here S5 900F

Me too - I've been searching for weeks to figure this out - tried every known fix .... nothing has helped. I've even reset/changed/updated my wifi settings on my router. Nothing has helped. My S5 is the only one that has this problem. Other phones in the house have no problem - S4 and others.... I just don't know whats going on. I maxed my data avoiding this issue - but I really need a fix for it.

This problem was driving me insane......I had it and managed to fix it (hopefully been going ok for three days now) I have a samsung Galaxy S5 on EE.....I backed everythingh up and did a factory data reset. Hope this helps.
I have a Galaxy S6 and have the exact same issue. I have called Samsung, my carrier (US Cellular), and tried a local place to get it fixed, but no one has ever heard of this issue. Amazon Photos was hogging a lot of bandwidth and backing up on wifi only so I stopped using that. Still not much of an effect. Using FB or a video is almost impossible because they won't load or refresh. I've tried all of the suggestions, but don't see a final fix. Can anyone help? This is my second S6 with the issue.
Hello,
I've had this issue across more than 1 device and more than 1 carrier.
Here's what happens:
I enable WiFi, and for a while everything works as expected. I can send and receive MMS messages. I can disable WiFi and go back to my 4G connection.
The problem is, after an unknown amount of time, the phone drops the 4G connection in the background. I only know when I can't receive/send MMS messages anymore. At that point, if I disable WiFI there's no 4G data connection, and I have to turn Airplane mode off and turn it back on.
This is really annoying. It happened to me using Sprint and a Galaxy S4 (both stock and custom ROMs) and it's happening to me with a Galaxy S5 from MetroPCS. (I've used the stock Metro ROMs, Stock T-mobile ROMs, and Custom T-mobile ROMs).
Right now I'm using a Stock T-mobile ROM with the latest firmware, carrier is MetroPCS.
What can I do so this doesn't happen? It's really frustrating.
Thank you for your time.

Hello.
That's already disabled.
Should I enable it?
I tried with "smart network switch" enabled and disabled and problem still happened.
My S5 G900F Android 5.00 (Smart Network Switch disabled, Power Save disabled) on EE UK has had this problem for 9 months after phone upgraded itself to Lollipop (EE win the accolade to being the SLOWEST ON THE PLANET to provide Android updates.....). Since Jan 3, my wife's G901, a couple of weeks after it upgraded from 5.0 to 5.02, has developed the same problem. Neither phone has ever been rooted or other.
I have fruitlessly searched everywhere for a solution without success. EE Customer Services Tier 2 & Samsung's own service centre have failed to fix it. EE & Samsung blame each other for 5.1 or 5.1.1 not being available for download. Neither is prepared to resolve the issue despite hours on the phone. Have tried Safe Mode, Factory Reset, clearing everything, reloading APNs & Samsung even reloaded Android. All a waste of time: Many many days of it!
After approx half an hour connected to Wi-Fi, only way to get the mobile data to connect, is either reboot, enter & exit Air-plane mode or flip the 4G > 3G > 4G connection under More Networks. Have tested the fault in different cell areas countries and continents; fault is same everywhere.
It seems there are quite a few sufferers of this problem.
Samsung S5 keeps losing data connection
I have the same problem. My new Samsung phone loses the data connection (even though data is turned on) and I can only re-connect by restarting the phone. The first EE shop I took it to couldn't help at all. The second gave me a new SIM - that didn't work. Then I tried online support and after 3.5 hours of my life, in which I was passed on from one person to another, they completed a factory re-set - which didn't work (and additionally lost all the personalisation of my screen and some of my contacts). So I now have a not-very-smart phone which I have to re-start every time I want to use data. This is a business contract and the phone is less than two months old, but I'm not getting any effective support from EE. Android version is 5.0.2
me too, since last update. and app 'phono' shows "mobile data off" not got a time on it, but when i leave wifi coverage, it wont reconnect to cell data 2g/3g/4g. flightmode toggle to restore.
Abandon hope if you have this intermittent mobile data problem!
...at least until there is a software update, though I have no idea if that will help.
I have now tried a new sim card, a factory reset, and a replacement phone - which was provided only because I'm a business customer and I found a sympathetic member of staff. *By the way, I was told that if you are personal customer they won't consider replacing your phone if it is more than a month old - even if you started complaining about the phone as soon as you got it, the chances are a month will have elapsed by the time they put you through the hoops of a new sim, reset etc - and then it is too late to insist on a replacement phone.
In any case the replacement phone didn't resolve the issue so I have reached* a dead end. My phone fails to connect to data after having been connected to wifi - you have to do it manually each time you move away from a wifi connnection. At first I was doing it by restarting the phone, but am now following the advice of someone else who has the same problem and am going into flight mode and out again. *
This is not satisfactory, and it seems from reading forums that EE are to blame for the problem rather than Samsung, but I'm not 100% sure about that.*
Possible solution that works, for me, at the moment!
Having suffered this issue of my S5 (SM-G901F) not connecting to mobile data after being on Wi-Fi for a while unless switching airplane mode on/off for a few weeks; although it has probably been happening since the update I received late December; I have tried all of the turn this switch off, factory resets (x2), etc, etc, etc. and Googled the issue without success.
I have found this thread interesting, and I even tried calling EE support only to be told "you have tried everything that we would tell you to do" and "it wouldn't be a sim card, or handset issue, sounds like software". The reply was basically that like-it or lump it until the 5.1 update is released "by Samsung not EE because EE do not release Android updates". [Perhaps EE don't release the updates, but the stock rom is tested by them and their bloatware added before they eventually release it!!!]
Following my last reset I tried selectively re-installing the apps I used incase that was causing the issue. No Luck!
One last thing I tried was to look at every system 'thing' that I could find which used/switched any part of the mobile/mobile data/wifi - in addition to the settings I had already tried (all of which were mentioned in this thread previously). One thing I could not find not mentioned here, or anywhere, was the VoWi-Fi call on/off which I had always set to on as I do not live in a great reception area. Calling over Wi-Fi is great when you don't have a strong mobile signal.
Having 'played' with this setting for the last 24 hours I have found that the VoWi-Fi on/off appears to be a possible cure - for me anyway.:fingers-crossed:
When VoWi-Fi was set to off and leaving the phone connected to Wi-Fi overnight, the S5 immediately switched to mobile data this morning when I turned the Wi-Fi off . It continued to switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data all morning whilst out and about in and out of Wi-Fi connections - Woop Woop!!!
I then tried switching VoWi-Fi on (with Wi-Fi on and at home), leaving the phone for a number of hours, only to find that when I turned Wi-Fi off the phone refused to connect to mobile data even with a 'decent' mobile signal. The only way to get it to connect was to go back to switching Airplane mode on/off.
Switched VoWi-Fi off again, left Wi-Fi connected, left the phone for a couple of hours, etc. and hey-presto immediately switched to mobile data when I turned the Wi-Fi off. [Dances around the room because he's got the S5 automatically switching to mobile data again. Even though I'm at home with a great fibre internet and strong Wi-Fi connection!!!]
I do not know if this could be a solution for the others who are suffering from this issue, but it appears to be a solution for me at the moment. I thought I would share as your previous posts have helped me and you all seem to be pulling your hair out; like I have been; trying to find a solution.
Try it, it may work, but don't shoot me if it doesn't!
It's encouraging to know that I'm not crazy. I've had this issue across two devices and carries.
John,
Thank for your suggestion about WiFi calling. Unfortunately, I always have it off! I never used it, so maybe I should try turning it on? We'll see lol.
At this point, I think this is going to be my last Galaxy line phone.
Is it wi-fi calling that's causing the problem?
I have wondered if there is a link with wi-fi calling, but haven't tested it properly. I signed up with ee and bought the Galaxy phone specifically so that I could use wifi calling, as the town where I live (in the Scottish Borders) doesn't get a mobile signal strong to work reliably indoors from any of the networks. I'll try turning off wi-fi calling to see if that sorts the data thing (though I see that for one person above it did not). That would mean I wouldn't get calls or texts when I'm at home so it would not be a permanent solution for me. But in fact the wi-fi calling is not reliable anyway....

Brian,
You never know the way things are going with this issue; given that nobody seems to be able to pinpoint the fault; turning it on may just sort it!!!
still no change and its a pita.....
