Most stable ROM? - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

May be the wrong place to post this, my apologies if so.
I've just purchased a Nexus player. I have also got an air mouse/keyboard combo as a remote (best $20 I've ever spent). I only plan to use a few apps on the device:
- net flix
- kodi
- youtube
- general web browser
- maybe songza
and I'm wondering which ROM might be the most stable? I've heard of people having issues with Netflix off stock, on stock, yes, no, maybe... mine is currently running stock, v5.1.1.
Which one is the most stable from my usage point would you fine people say?
Stock 5.1
Stock 6
AOSP
Lollirock 5.1
Lollirock 6
Thanks so much!

Yea this may be the wrong spot to post this but may I ask where you got that air mouse from?

Thanks, maybe the mods could move this thread to the right spot..
I've tried a few remotes with a few android boxes I've had and this one is the best I've found. I bought the one called 'Aerb' but you'll see a number of resellers on ebay selling the exact same device. It runs on 2 AAA batteries.
What I really really like is that the four coloured buttons on the bottom AND the big red power button on the
top left are learning/programmable IR blasting, so you can program them to turn your TV on, change inputs, increase TV volume etc. using your TV remote. The other buttons are not programmable.

I should probably go post this in the accessories section...

Xoom WiFi - Your Opinions

Hi all,
Just got my new Xoom wifi yesterday & was a bit unsure after playing with it for a few hours. This was mainly due to the Youtube problem. Now I have resolved this & have flash installed it seems like a pretty good device.
I've just come from an ipad 1 which I thought was pretty good apart from the lack of flash & web page loading times. With the Xoom it seems pretty quick in general but scrolling sometimes seems a little slow to react. I hope future Honeycomb upgrades may address this though.
What are everyone else's opinions into Google's first foray into the tablet market? Anyone else have any issues?
I don't have any complaints other then browser force closing sometimes, but for some reason I haven't had any FC's for the last few days. I'm sure this problem will be fixed with update.
If you have scrolling problems on xda forum, then switch to XDA Classic theme (you can find the select box on bottom left corner).

Thanks poisike, the scrolling on xda is much more responsive now.
As for the scrolling issue I suggest you look at some alternative browsers in the market. I like Opera (although it doesn't support flash on the Xoom yet).
Wifi Xoom
Hi,
I got a Xoom for use at my workplace. It really is something else. Using the stock web browser is fine, it stalls orskips now and then depending on how many tabs are open and the amount of content on those pages. Its about the same as running IE on my desktop. IMO flash is over rated. Try another broswer, there are at least a dozen different browsers for Android now .Most of our other issues are software related as not many apps are designed for tablets or such a large screen. Ive really tried pushing this and it handles multi tasking very well. Only once it did reboot on its own.
I got Pandora working, I found a backup pn my Droid Incredibe, v1.2 and it works just fine. For work we really needed a keyboard with numbers on the top row, Tablet Keyboard Free is working for that.
What I hate about this is placement and use of the thre physical buttons. The two volume buttons are hard to press. Its better to hit one, then when to level shows on the screen, use the touch screen to grab the slider. The power/unlock button is on the back. So if its anywhere, I cant just start using it where it is, I have to pick it up first to press the unlock button.
Heavy web browsing and music streaming, I have to say Im impressed with the eight hours of battery life. Moto released new PC drivers that now support charging via USB from a Windows computer.
-TheHoovie
Any suggestions for a good browser apart from Opera. I tried Dolphin & Skyfire but couldn't get on with either of those.

These kinds of posts always confuse me. What are our thoughts on the Xoom? There are pages and pages of posts on this forum.. it's what the forum is for
So far so good
I bought the xoom as a laptop replacement. Pretty risky, but once i tried it at best buy i thought the whole idead of a tablet as capable or possibly capable as the Xoom as too good to pass up. i spent a fair bit of time with the ipad 1 (not the 2), but tto me it felt like i was 12 years old again and having to chose between my first PC or an apple IIg. i could have a thing that works really well the apple IIg or I can get this DOS based machine that I can later upgrade and overall mess with (like installing the revolutionary soundblaster card, yes there were days before 8-bit and 16 bit sound). Of course I went with the PC. Though there were times when i was frustrated because i forgot to salve a drive and I have to take it back out to switch the pins, i have enjoyed the flexiblity of a PC. I felt the same way when I was using the Xoom. I can see the potential, but know that there will be times it will be frustrating.
So what am I saying - if you like tinkering and really researching your device then get a xoom. If you hate that get an iPad.

With new drivers they are able to turn a 5 volt source into a 12 volt source? Interesting.
They have new drivers for charging PHONES but it doesn't say anything about charging the Xoom, doesn't even do a trickle charge.

Get adfree... not a single browser issue since installing it. I blame flash ads...
A solid software update to address the browser/launcher lag, add SD Card suport, and add USB Drive support, and we'd be good to go. After that you just need the inevitable wave of Honeycomb apps.

why isn't everyone using the flash on demand only. it safe you all the problems and no lag nor battery drain. my xoom still goes the same amount of time it was before the flash update. cuz i had it on demand. so if i wanna watch a video i can click on it. that's by far is a good option. the best thing is to have the option to have flash if i wanted it. something steve jobs won't give his fans. flash is not the problem, if you use it correctly it will be a dream.

[Q] How to create HDMI ONLY rom for broken vega?

As i have smashed my vega's glass does anyone have any ideas or advive on how to create a rom with HDMI as the default/main/only display? as id like to use it as a smart tv/media box! I am a novice with rom making but understand the therory and im willing to learn!
Currently trying to find where and how androids hardware dispay settings are/work!
could it be as easy as unplugging the lcd and restart with hdmi pluged in?
Hi,
you don't have to create your own ROM for that.
The easiest way to achieve what you want is to buy the official dock station (£30 I guess), plug the HDMI on your TV and stick a wireless USB Mouse-Keyboard combo on the back of the dock (I have used before with my Dell branded, but I'm sure should work with anything). Done!
Vegacomb still does not fully performs with the HDMI so I suggest you to use Corvus5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043506 which is the snappiest and most bug-free ROM around I've seen around.
Sit back on the couch, use the mouse as if it was your finger on the screen and the keyboard is just a nice touch for when typing e-mails or searching on you tube.
---
if you don't fancy buying the dock station, there're some ways to make the Vega USB port be a host USB, so u can stick the mouse direct on it, but then you can read to find it out how.
thaks for the reply! i was thinking of going back to corvus5 or maybe cm7 because as you say they have usb host also the dock for the vega is hard to find. The thing id like to do is have the resolution increased to 1280x800 like the xoom or 1280x720+? instead of 1024x600 in a 720 or 1080 box?
what im aming to do is turn my broken vega into a smart android tv box like...

I saw those links and find them very tempting.
But the fact is that those are very special versions of android with some extra dedicated hardware for video decoding. Tegra2 is for sure a massive powerhouse, but, as a control systems (automation) engineer and Android App (not ROM) developer, I don't think there would be a way to "just trick it out" some existing Vega ROM to do the job. You would really need to built your own version of Android creating some own specific drivers. But that's kinda of my guess based on my knowledge of hardware, I hope I'm wrong cause I would definitely want to take a look in such ROM.

As for drivers the vega must have some kind of hdmi driver already?
I want to dissable the lcd and have hdmi as default display insted of mirrord?
Does android use edid info to set resolution etc can this be taken from the tv?id like to up the ui resolution to make it less pixilated, as youtube and media will run at upto 1080 over hdmi can the ui and apps be forced to?
sorry to ramble , im learning lots!!

Looks the same as the Vega dock, I just walked into PC world and grabbed one for £25(reduced from £30) shame you don't get a extra power block with it.
Mods please move this question to the general section. Thanks.
seems my post got hijacked i dont care about docks its still a mirrord ouput! My real question is can someone please try to point my in the right direction...
I want to dissable the lcd/digitizer use a mouse and have hdmi as default display running full UI at 1280x720 or higher, i beleve that i have to edit the kernel driver/module? im shure this is possable as it can be done on the tegra 250 dev kits?
not rely fussed what android version, ive gone back to corvus5 as 2.2 is nvidia supported drivers thought it should be best approach?
Any links to help me get started with the vega kernel would be very much appreciated!

Sure, it says "ViewSonic" on the front, but that's no different to plugging in speakers that say "Sony" to me, so no worries.

[Guide] LS HDMI mirroring on Lapdock (Wet Dream and DarkSide)

I posted this in the [MOD] HDMI Landscape Mirroring thread in Development, but the post didn't get much attention there.
For anyone who has not seen it, I wanted to post it in general with a slightly better step by step.
WHY?: Yes, LS HDMI mirroring does already exist in Darkside and Wet Dream, however NOT on the lapdock. On the lapdock, the only option is webtop.
What's wrong with webtop? Nothing really...if you want to surf the internet. However, if you want to play a game on the lapdock, things get quite laggy. Playing Super Mario World using SNESDroid inside webtop is VERY laggy. When doing LS HDMI mirroring, the lag almost vanishes.
Who is this trick good for?
People who do not use Entertainment Center or the other HDMI options.
People who want to play games on lapdock.
People who want full screen LS HDMI with mouse and keyboard support on the lapdock.
People who don't like the idea of webtop but like LS HDMI.
People who like being able to choose between webtop and LS HDMI on their lapdock
How do we do this?
First time only
1. Open your lapdock, set the Atrix on it only partially. So that only the HDMI is recognized (The left half of the phone will be raised slightly). If you have a HD TV and an HDMI cable, you can simply plug the cable into the TV.
2. When the dialog pops up, check "Remember my selection" and choose Mirror phone display.
3. Close the lapdock and properly dock the phone. Instead of HDMI, it should register as "multimedia station".
4. Check "Remember my selection" and choose Mirror phone on display
5. Undock the Atrix and then open the lapdock.
6. Plug the Atrix into the lapdock and start pressing ESC
7. Continue pressing ESC until the big red M disappears. When it disappears press ESC one or two more times
8.The screen will flicker a few times, try to be patient. You will end up in either Webtop or LS HDMI with mouse and keyboard support.
9. If you ended up in LS HDMI, you are good to go. If you ended up in webtop, start over at step 5.
Notes:
It definitely helps to have no apps open and be just on your launcher screen when you start
It will probably take a few tries to get the hang of it, but I can do it pretty consistently now.
After a period of inactivity, you will get kicked out of LS HDMI and webtop will automatically load up.
If someone figures out how to get LS HDMI working on CM7, this is probably easier to achieve than a full webtop.
I have tested this on TWO Atrixes, one running Wet Dream 1.4.3, the other running Darkside Prefinal.
I will try to record a video of the process here in the next couple days.
If anyone has anything to add, feedback, or a better format for the post, I would be more than happy to edit this.
Sorry to bump my own thread, but I will most likely not be posting a video since LS HDMI works with a little less hassle in the latest CM7 weekly. If you do not mind completely losing webtop, it isn't a bad option.
However, if someone else records a video I would be more than happy to stick it in the first post. The method works and is worth the potential couple attempts if you enjoy webtop from time to time as well
Thanks for the method! I'm trying it, haven't succeeded yet. The "M" always disppear very fast and then webtop pops up. And under some circumstances first the mirroring video with a huge cursor first comes up and then replaced by webtop.
Is timing very important when pressing ESC?
And, am I getting it wrong? I repeatedly pressed ESC, am I supposed to hold it down and wait for "M" and then tap twice again?
I'll keep trying... Because webtop give me VimWiki and git, I cannot go without it :-D
BTW: The power problem: There's an option in android settings, to prevent the phone from suspending while in charge. It worked for me when my method was still effective.

If you are occasionally seeing the big arrow on the screen, you are getting close. Tap ESC all the way through the M. I don't think the timing of it mattered much though. You can try tapping just once after it goes away. I said two initially because I found that too many times always rejected it. But one time might not be at the right moment.
I think you will be a master of the method soon. Getting the mirroring to show up even for a second means you are getting there

BTW I'm running on a modded ROM based on official Chinese 2.3 ROM.
Confirmed working for me too. I like my full linux webtop better than mirroring though.
I discovered that if I dock the phone before opening the lid, the M will persist for longer and thus achieving greater chance.
I'm surprised that only after the first success, the behavior becomes so consistent.

That is pretty much what happened for me to. Before I switched to CM, I could get it about 90% of the time. It is great for gaming and the option to still use webtop when you please is wonderful.

I believe it works because pressing escape while webtop is initializing simply ends the process and it defaults to mirror over HDMI.

Works great for me too!
I'm on the latest WetDream Light.
The only drawback is that the graphic detail on screen get's very jaggy. I tried changing the HDMI overscan but that didn't help.
Kinda cool for some horizontal games, but for everything else, I rather use my heavily modded Gnome Webtop...
Thanks for sharing MyronJ906 !!!
You might consider trying a higher LCD density. I bet a higher resolution makes it look a little better mirrored. I have mainly been mirroring on my lap dock to take notes through Evernote or play Grand Theft Auto with my playstation controller. It plays great once it is setup.
Playing Mario and Sonic with the lapdock keyboard is pretty great as well.
But for actual computing tasks, I would agree. Webtop wins.
I am definitely loving mirroring on Neutrino right now though. Makes gaming GREAT

You are right about the density change. Right now I'm on 240.

I used LCD Density Modder Pro to change my density since it also includes a market fix. (That spoofs density as 240 so that you won't get random app incompatibilities)
I'm using 175 right now and it seems pretty nice for both lapdock and normal phone use. 180/185 are also pretty great.
But if you're looking for something a little less extreme there is nothing wrong with 200. It's a pretty good middle ground

The format of "The Beast" looks weird

Has anyone else noticed the formatting of the beast looks very weird and words are cut off/not aligned properly on the shield tv? The home bar with all the tabs is in the middle of the screen rather than the bottom like on other devices. I spoke to my buddy who uses beast on multiple devices and he is having the same issue on his shield tv but not any other devices. I will upload a pic to show how mine looks. Are we installing something incorrectly?

Has anyone else noticed the formatting of the beast looks very weird and words are cut off/not aligned properly on the shield tv? The home bar with all the tabs is in the middle of the screen rather than the bottom like on other devices. I spoke to my buddy who uses beast on multiple devices and he is having the same issue on his shield tv but not any other devices. I will upload a pic to show how mine looks. Are we installing something incorrectly?

I had something similar in result when you using the beast package on non compatible kodi version. I had no problems on kodi 15.2 but on 16 same glitches and even worst, which is normal not compatible yet. Give him favor, Report that bug to Chris if you use kodi 15.2 or >

that is interesting. I am on 15.2 isengard and installed the latest beast from the chrisb repository following his instructions. What version did you install of beast? I used the one called like best available or something. So you are having no issues with yours on your shield tv? Mind sharing a picture? Yes I have already reported the bug to him!

I used theBeast_201509 from http://spartanpixel.net/Kodi/thebeast/ on 15.2 and was ok except turning off / shutting down / quit...was take around half minute and yes was without glitch on 15.2 shield tv, samsung f8000, don't using coz some options are not handy with shield remote. And sorry don't wanna touch existing setups / library / collections rolling back to 15.2 for just some screen shots. My existing setups are here on kodi 16 beta 2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=64085255

Really wondering about my chineese head unit

Hello All,
I might ask something stupid now, but I know from the past people generally are very helpful here.
I concider myself handy enough with androif (phones!) but since I had someone building in a android head unit,..
The first one had all kinf of bugs, but atleast I could use a launcher i liked myself,.
But, due all the bugs they replaced it. looking good, but...they, to start with, blocked the launcher. or well. I can install it. I can set in settings the standard launcher, but somehow it always comes back in the main layout. "BC LAUNCHER"I think it is.
The controls mainly go trough a partly transparant circle on your screen, giving a home button, page back etc.
When I use the launcher, somehow I miss, for instance, a go back button somewhere. So have to use that little circle again, And you guess it; returning me to the main layout.
So..was thinking; I install an other rom. But! This android unit also operates my standard car functions, such as satnav, some settings of thecar etc.
So,. basically, they fitted the android in between the Mercedes system. Really not what I want (if android fails, all fails!) but only thing I can do about it is have all removed. And I really use it a lot.
I believe the system runs on android 9.
So. If I would find a Rom;
I looked into the info of the system, but at MCU I find some custom MB line. Not what I would exopect.
I realise my info I am giving is quite limited, but rather hear where to find the correct info then drop all kind of non relevant data here.
How large would be the risk that the communication with the car goes wrong? Or is this a seperate part?
I hope I make sense!
I managed to figure out the specs, see pics.
But now what? Suuplier claims its for sure Android 9,that all works as supposed (can't even control Spotify with the car buttons), and that e. G the laucher are 'experiments that he doesn't support.'
Supplier has zero knowledge of android.

(sorry, my phone didn't allow me to add the pics, the xda app is waster)
Sorry for kicking this older post but i have the same problem... I am desperately searching for options with my new android based head unit mine is a MT8988 with android 10 installed in a W204 MOPF MB.
These are the specs...
You bought, just like I did, a fake unit. Run an app that will tell you the REAL specs.. You'll probably find its android 7 or 8.
You probably still have a little box with these systen? That's old anyway. All modern (android 10)systems have only a screen where all is in.
I took mine out, sold it, and bought a real android 10 unit, that allows me to do anything. It works like a charm!

Api28=Android 9
There is an other app that is slightly better to show the specs, but I can't remember. Anyway, android 9 is not bad (not what you bought though..)
Can you use a launcher and make thar work? Mostly these units with fake specs are locked for a lot of things.
