Xoom WiFi - Your Opinions - Xoom General

Hi all,
Just got my new Xoom wifi yesterday & was a bit unsure after playing with it for a few hours. This was mainly due to the Youtube problem. Now I have resolved this & have flash installed it seems like a pretty good device.
I've just come from an ipad 1 which I thought was pretty good apart from the lack of flash & web page loading times. With the Xoom it seems pretty quick in general but scrolling sometimes seems a little slow to react. I hope future Honeycomb upgrades may address this though.
What are everyone else's opinions into Google's first foray into the tablet market? Anyone else have any issues?

I don't have any complaints other then browser force closing sometimes, but for some reason I haven't had any FC's for the last few days. I'm sure this problem will be fixed with update.
If you have scrolling problems on xda forum, then switch to XDA Classic theme (you can find the select box on bottom left corner).

Thanks poisike, the scrolling on xda is much more responsive now.

As for the scrolling issue I suggest you look at some alternative browsers in the market. I like Opera (although it doesn't support flash on the Xoom yet).

Wifi Xoom
Hi,
I got a Xoom for use at my workplace. It really is something else. Using the stock web browser is fine, it stalls orskips now and then depending on how many tabs are open and the amount of content on those pages. Its about the same as running IE on my desktop. IMO flash is over rated. Try another broswer, there are at least a dozen different browsers for Android now .Most of our other issues are software related as not many apps are designed for tablets or such a large screen. Ive really tried pushing this and it handles multi tasking very well. Only once it did reboot on its own.
I got Pandora working, I found a backup pn my Droid Incredibe, v1.2 and it works just fine. For work we really needed a keyboard with numbers on the top row, Tablet Keyboard Free is working for that.
What I hate about this is placement and use of the thre physical buttons. The two volume buttons are hard to press. Its better to hit one, then when to level shows on the screen, use the touch screen to grab the slider. The power/unlock button is on the back. So if its anywhere, I cant just start using it where it is, I have to pick it up first to press the unlock button.
Heavy web browsing and music streaming, I have to say Im impressed with the eight hours of battery life. Moto released new PC drivers that now support charging via USB from a Windows computer.

Any suggestions for a good browser apart from Opera. I tried Dolphin & Skyfire but couldn't get on with either of those.

Got a link to those drivers? That would be a big benefit for me.

These kinds of posts always confuse me. What are our thoughts on the Xoom? There are pages and pages of posts on this forum.. it's what the forum is for

So far so good
I bought the xoom as a laptop replacement. Pretty risky, but once i tried it at best buy i thought the whole idead of a tablet as capable or possibly capable as the Xoom as too good to pass up. i spent a fair bit of time with the ipad 1 (not the 2), but tto me it felt like i was 12 years old again and having to chose between my first PC or an apple IIg. i could have a thing that works really well the apple IIg or I can get this DOS based machine that I can later upgrade and overall mess with (like installing the revolutionary soundblaster card, yes there were days before 8-bit and 16 bit sound). Of course I went with the PC. Though there were times when i was frustrated because i forgot to salve a drive and I have to take it back out to switch the pins, i have enjoyed the flexiblity of a PC. I felt the same way when I was using the Xoom. I can see the potential, but know that there will be times it will be frustrating.
So what am I saying - if you like tinkering and really researching your device then get a xoom. If you hate that get an iPad.

With new drivers they are able to turn a 5 volt source into a 12 volt source? Interesting.

They have new drivers for charging PHONES but it doesn't say anything about charging the Xoom, doesn't even do a trickle charge.

Get adfree... not a single browser issue since installing it. I blame flash ads...

A solid software update to address the browser/launcher lag, add SD Card suport, and add USB Drive support, and we'd be good to go. After that you just need the inevitable wave of Honeycomb apps.

why isn't everyone using the flash on demand only. it safe you all the problems and no lag nor battery drain. my xoom still goes the same amount of time it was before the flash update. cuz i had it on demand. so if i wanna watch a video i can click on it. that's by far is a good option. the best thing is to have the option to have flash if i wanted it. something steve jobs won't give his fans. flash is not the problem, if you use it correctly it will be a dream.

Yes, the USB Driver supports the xoom. However, look at the bottom of the page, where it says "PC Charging Drivers" Take a look at the models named there. The Xoom is not one of them.

Most sites I go to seem fine but XDA in particular, the lag is always present. Not enough to bother me too much though.
True, I am mainly only experiancing it on xda. I might have to use their app.
I'm actually seeing this on a bunch of sites I frequent, this along with some other misc. slowdowns make me anxious for some OS updates... I cannot WAIT for CM and the crew to get going on this thing!

Do you have to do that on your PC...? Me either.
I am seeing a very annoying lag typing into forums like this (and others). 1-2 second lag - very frustrating!
Using the "about:debug" approach to disable OpenGL Rendering seems to address, but I am not clear what we lose in return.
I am also experiancing lag when typing in the browser. I think USAA and Netflix are the worst sites. I just got my xoom so I'm not sure how it was in the past with 3.0 but I think the browser still needs some work. The force closes in the browser are also annoying.

i find it worst on this site, but any site to fill in a form is crazy slow for me off and on, there seems to be no rhyme or reason. It makes editting difficult. Arrow keys would be nice. Lol
I do hve some lag on google talk but nothing like in the browser. So you're not alone
Helped reduce the lag
I disabled the Opengl rendering setting and then enabled the Normal rendering on the browser's Debug setting. Disabling the Opengl prevents the browser from properly playing the flash embedded objects though.
I have also been getting the lag on keyboard its very frustrating as its effectively reducing the productivity of a device that's designed to improve it. I am rather disgusted with Motorola for having the balls to release a device with such a fundamental flaw. I have dropped from 60 wpm to a rather disgustingly low 20 wpm! I have heard using a bluetooth keyboard negates this (can anyone confirm this) but I may aswell have purchased a laptop if I wanted a hard keyboard. I have also been having fun with the copy and paste feature when moving the cursor or actually needing to use it lol.
To fix lag follow these instructions:
Go to XDA
Scroll all the way to the bottom
Switch to XDA Classic instead of XDA 2010
Problem solved on XDA website.
As far as other forums I would imagine you could use an older version of their site.

Nice fix for xda but tbh this realy shouldnt be an issue and should have been solved before they released the device to consumers

this is one of my biggest issues with android ... while we get a lot of extra freedom and other stuff, iOS users dont have to deal with this crap because if something was this bad (typing from my xoom right now) I dont think apple would allow it to leave their hands. I love my xoom, I really do, but even almost a year since release, its still not as good (in terms of everything working like it should) than my mom's ipad 2.... just very frustrating to say the least

ICS is the answer. No lag. It's a beautiful thing.
Looking forward to ICS, only the fact the camera is not support stopped me from trying a ROM.
I OWNED a iPad 2, but maybe I am insane because I will never buy Apple products again and even though the Xoom is soon to be dated by the Quad Core Tablets I still find the Xoom better in almost ever way over the iPad 2.

Google Market - Tablet Apps

I opened up market today, hit the tablet section, and I was so excited as a ton of apps showed up. but, then i realized that the same 20 apps just kept repeating.
Any one else see that?
Ha yes....same with me. I had checked earlier so when I checked this afternoon and saw tons I was very excited. That is, until I looked closer
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
I see the same thing but at least there's 4 more apps on the list!
What a sick, sick joke, Google.
It just keeps scrolling ad infinitum!
It'll pick up soon enough. A lot of apps already on the market, even though they should work fine on honeycomb, will have things like "android.hardware.telephony" features enabled, which will by default hide it in the market from honeycomb tablets (which lack telephony). It's a shame that the devices were released so soon after the Honeycomb API was released, but give the devs a week or so to test and tweak and a lot more should pop up once the they've amended their manifests. I quite like how Android is the complete opposite to Apple when it comes to launches, but I can see how it could be annoying .
There's definitely a few new apps in that list, trust me
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
it just got updated with a list of feature. limited atm, but it's growing
It was a glitch and quickly patched. However, I had that glitch a few days go, not today.
Google is tweaking the Market app almost everyday it appears.
Spare parts question
I have a Tab and I use an app called Spare Parts that resizes (scales) phone apps to work on the Tab. Have you tried it on the Xoom?
For me the list was at least 40% longer. I installed like 7 or 8 new things. I am tempted to try the updated Thumbit Keyboard, but I am unsure. I am cheap and even 2$ would be terrible to waste.
that keyboard is awesome. You shouldn't regret it.
Tell me if anyone else notices this. Whenever you are searching apps in the market and click on an app, and then you go back it puts you all the way back up to the very top of the app list forcing you to start all the way from the beginning all over again! When you hit back it should bring you back to where you left off instead of starting all over at the top of the list. And it does it every single time too! Its annoying! Especially when you are just looking around at apps to download, you might get very far down on the list and then... BAM! You will have to start over when you click an app to view more info about it. Who feels the pain on that? This needs a fix ASAP!

I went and bought it. It's really just like $1.67 but I figured it would hold me over till SwiftKey released their tablet version (it's in BETA currently).

I bought it too. It gets the job done. I find that it seems to repeat my letters alot so I have to type at a steady pace. We'll see how it works out. I feel like it's designed for smaller fingers/hands than mine.
I am a swiftkey guy so I can't wait until they release it
I bought Thumbit too. I like having multiple keyboards to choose from. Sometimes, I'm at table and the stock keyboard works well. Sometimes, I'm holding it in one hand with a stylus in the other and the slideIt keyboard works well. i use thumbit if i'm sitting on the couch holding it in two hands. All worth it.
I am waiting for swype though.
My biggest problem with non-stock keyboards is that the windows doesn't show the rest of the page, but rather an input window of sorts. That is, if i'm entering information on a webpage, using the stock keyboard, I can still see the rest of the page and navigate around it, but using anything else, I can't./

Woke up to 11 new apps in the Tablet section of the market this morning.
Oddly enough, I feel like a couple of them don't belong there yet.
Evernote, which actually isn't tablet optimized (small icons, no multiple fragments for easier navigation, etc), but works.
and Bonsai Blast, which also works but looks like crap because it's just stretched and not in HD for the tablet.

sluggish secure sites

hi guys, I'm finally Xoom owner as of yesterday, haven't even gotten the thing rooted yet so.....falling way behind. Man, I love this thing though.
So the problem I'm having has been hard to research because I don't know what some of the basic website types are called. The biggest problem is my bank website so sluggish and choppy it's really not useable. Actually though I'm noticing that posting here is causing the same trouble so....what is this dialogue entry, scrolling animated called? Cause if I can't get it to work with this, the enemy is going to pull rank and make me take this back for the laptop she has picked out.
Is there any browser, or add on that will hook me up?
If Pnc's app wasn't so half ass this wouldn't be an issue!

You've got to give the Xoom a real chance. To me, rooting and installing the Tiamat Moray rom, overclocking, installing the overclocked gpu Odachi kernel over it, will fix you up. Also, I find that the alpha Ice Cream Sandwich build by Team Eos (aka Tiamat) is fantastic--fast and smooth as butter. Also, use a launcher like ADW EX, and you'll love using the Xoom. I use Dolphin HD browser and like it better than stock android. Not all apps are optimized for tablets yet, but they are getting there. My Bank of America app works fine.
I am struggling to figure out wtf I was talking about to be honest. I have a newborn and I haven't slept in a few days.
So the type of site in referring to, I am thinking it might be java. basically it's a constant fight to keep the courser where you want it to be. Then it still winds up typing in the middle of some other word. I thought it was just https sites but during this post it realized it was the desktop version of the forum too.
Our laptop has about had it, this thing may have to be a full replacement for a while. The only way to do it banking is through the full version site, their half ass mobile site lacks the functionality......so if we, can't use this for banking I'm going to have to get a laptop. I really like this thing. I'm just hoping there's a way around it that I'm not aware of.
For videos....let's just say hypotheticaly someone for whatever reason would want to go to....oh I dunno, "you corn", a farming site loaded with streaming videos. Let's say that person were to click on a clip starring his favorite farmer, Bella Donna, when my wife is finally out shopping or hair or something.
The only thing that would show would be the first five seconds, then it would stop and say buffering. Eventually the slider would start moving again and your can hear the combine running but the video status frozen.
First of all, congratulations on the baby...been there and it's a tough first few months, so you have my sympathy. Lack of a good night's sleep will wear you down, fast.
I love my Xoom, and for most of my purposes it has replaced my laptop, but Imho, the Xoom is a personal device and it would probably not suffice as the family's sole computer. You can definitely improve the Xoom's performance by rooting and running custom roms/kernels. You can possibly improve your home's internet speed, which will improve your downloads and reduce some of that streamed video buffering. But there is no tablet, not Xoom, not Transformer Prime, not iPad, that has what the comparably priced laptop has. Of course, the Xoom can do things and go places that the laptop can't match, but for your needs, and for peace in your home which you need right now, maybe the laptop is the better choice. I'm sure you'll make whatever is the right decision for you. Good luck with everything.

Asus Tablet (TF101) after 1 year of use

Hello!
I bought my tablet, a TF101 16GB wifi, a year ago, when it just came out.
I also bought a dock since my desire was to use it for work. I take notes, use internet with a wifi mini router for mail, and other office uses. I quite never use it for gaming, only some browsing at home when I do not want to switch on my mac.
I had stock kernel (before ICS), rooted stock kernel, ICS (rooted and not rooted) and now I am trying Jelly bean (not official).
I also tried different cooked roms.
During this year, I often had a lot of problems (kind of problem depends on rom installed):
- random reboots;
- encryption unsuccessful problems;
- various kinds of hangs
and I always had to do a factory reset (firmware reinstall in a lot of cases) and trying to recover my backups made with different tools.
In this way I can confirm that I never have been able to use it at work because of its weakness.
Now, I cannot understand if it is an Android O.S. problem, a specific problem of MY TF101, a problem of ASUS tablets or what.
Previously I had an IPAD (first model) and I never had such problems (but I cannot do so much with it)...
What have I to do?
Sell it and buy another one?
Sell it and leave tablets world?
Sell it and buy another brand of tablets?
Warranty is expired....
Thank you for your considerations....
Chris
PS sorry for my english....
Hi,
I had similar issues. I've read somewhere that this is caused mainly by two things. NVIDIA drivers and slow flash memory of the tf101 (slownes of the tf101). So, if you get a good price I would consider selling it. The NVIDIA driver problem is causing the reboots because the CPU can't be brought back from sleep or something like that. A workaround is to use this app:
(Wake Lock - PowerManager in google play)
and set it to the first option, PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK. This drains a bit the battery, however I've got rid of the most reboots. Give a try.
jokob
My opinion would be that its an issue of ASUS firmware. Most (would say all but i dont use encryption) if not all of your problems would be solved by custom firmware.

I also have the TF 101 and have experienced many of the same problems, random lockups, FC's, etc. Since this was my first Tablet I attributed this all to the Android system. I had also intended to use this as a note taking tool for work but due to the instability I could not. I recently purchased the TF 700 as a replacement but ran into the same issues I also purchased the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 at the same time and used both Tablets side by side There really is no comparison the note is rock solid and super fast. The note taking functions are incredible.
My only real complaint is how little I've used the dock.. it cost me $150 and I basically use it as a battery or portable charger...
Yeah, I've experienced SOD and RR, but only since I've been using nightlies and non-stable roms. I've been considering changing tablets because my brother wants my tablet, but I think I'd rather buy him a new one because I don't think he can handle the flashing and ****..
For the record, it's been a little more than a year (I bought it around.. end of June, after a ****ty junior year, I decided to reward myself), but I still really like my tablet. Just not the dock.
That's to bad, only issues I experienced were rare lock ups and few random reboots. These were all primarily caused by the first release of ics.
I successfully used this tablet for school and my business. Not to heavy into gaming but did get slightly addicted to shadow gun for a time. My primary use for it lately is media and using QuickBooks mobile for proposals and invoicing while on the road.
I have had 3 tfs for the last year and all have had the same stability, all pre b70. I always flashed roms with nv flash.
I absolutely love this tablet, for the price, it's probably the best tablet around...or was for the last year.

its funny, that the problems that u guys comment and increasingly Complain upon about RR and Crashes... they happen rarely to me.. its all about the right choice of kernels and roms... Combine and find out which suits u the best !

I couldn't agree more... now with JB is running smother than ever and didn't had any reboots, SOD's... nothing :good:
Ive never had any real issue with my TF101. Bought in the month they were released in the UK, got the keyboard through the cheap deal. Stock rom, never rooted and always upgraded OTA without wiping anything.
Mostly used it for reading RSS feeds, emails and a few websites. With the odd simple game, nothing too stressful for it though so I suspect it rarely runs flat out.
I got the keyboard because I thought Id use it, But I think I last plugged the tablet into it about three months ago.
Ive probably had 4 OS crashes that Ive noticed and probably about the same random application crashes (mostly browser) The only app that always crashes in Angry Birds space. Every time I play a certain level it crashes part way though so Im stuck on that level.
The only annoying thing I remember is that the wifi doesnt always connect to my Mifi. But it has no trouble with my home access point so I think thats the Mifi rather than the tablet.
I wouldnt say its perfect but its been almost pain free for me.
I recently bought Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and I was surprised how it has none of the issues the Transformer had. Don't get me wrong - the main problem with TF101 is slow NAND (causing lags when saving, updating etc.) and browsing experience. Apart from that it is quite brilliant. You have to remember that its the first generation of Android tablets - it had its problems and Asus is proving to have quite a few problems with quality control (TF201 was the worst example of this) and uses worse components to lower the price. Anyway - Note 10.1 is brilliant because it solved the problems I had - the browsing is very fast (like on my i7 laptop), no lags whatsoever and the stylus makes taking notes and drawing designs for new games much easier (I used to have a bunch of paper sheets all over my desk before with drawings, projects, TODOs and notes - now I use Lecture Notes for that).
I've had a love/hate relationship with my tf101...I love the keyboard...I can't remember the last time I removed it. Nothing beats a physical keyboard for me. The hate part has mostly been the browsers. It boggles the mind that it seems to be impossible to get a browser to just work...to do what a desktop browser can...every time, all the time.
Instead, to get the function of a desktop browser, I have 8 browsers installed. For the most part, my default is Opera...it works on most things and is relatively fast on most pages. Then, without warning, some page functions just won't work. Dialog boxes are a particular source of angst...as are videos.
Dialog boxes are an issue with most android browsers i've used...some work on some pages...some don't work on the same pages. Videos are completely hit and miss on Opera. I found the best, (and by that I mean the most reliable), browser for that has been the stock browser.
....until I stumbled upon a suggestion to try Boat browser. It has so far proven to be the most stable, reliable, consistent android browser and is my new goto browser. It's not perfect but it's as close to a real desktop browser I've found so far.
I know the video problems are with the browsers themselves since netflix runs flawlessly...in fact, almost everything does. I had some issues with occasional random reboots back in the first ics days but haven't been a problem in forever.
The random reboots on angry birds space isn't a real deal breaker...I can't think of any apps I use on a regular basis, (remember when we used to call them programs), that don't' work or fail on a regular basis.
It's the bloody browsers that have been my one consistent, overwhelming, holding myself back from frisbeeing this thing against a wall, frustration.
At some point, I'll try a new mod....it worked a treat keeping my Motorola Milestone alive and useful.
I even accidentally ran over this thing with my car and except for a slight warping of the body, not a thing broke....not even the screen..
I've considered moving on up to the infinity or some other tablet...if samsung makes a keyboard I'll really be tempted, but so far, this puppy has been a real trooper,..one of my least idiotic purchases.
After 8 months of no issues with my TF-101, I had to do a factory reset. My TF became unstable the last couple of weeks. It was constantly locking up. I thought it may be the kernel I was using (with stock .27), but no matter what kernel I flashed, the tablet was locking up every day even without overclocking. My guess it was one of the apps I installed recently. It wasn't too big a deal though. After wiping, I'm back to running guevor's kernel at 1.4GHz with no issues whatsoever.
I've bought my tf101 3 months ago and I'm happy. First month I had some problems related with suddenly app closing but it was solved with latest ics stock update (.27). Gmail was very unstable too but was solved with update as well. Despite of that i was very curious about root capabilities and custom roms. I still have a stable tablet, overclocked at 1.4. I have the keyboard dock too.
Btw hi, this is my first msg after being anonimous for 3 months xD
Maybe these problems you are reporting are related to hardware issues or firmware only present in older tablets?
Does stock updates touch something in the tablet that custom roms can't do?

I got mine second hand from a friend and ever since I've had it, it has run rock solid! Now that Cyanogen is releasing CM10 nightlies for the device that are only getting better with every release I hope to get plenty more life from it until I absolutely have to replace it!
I am almost sure that I have a NAND hardware problem.
I tried to install UBUNTU. All is ok but if I try to update to 12.04, I always get the same problem while installing.
Problem raise always when a specific amount of free space is used.
I also noticed sometimes (also with Andorid) to have some problems writing files....
How can I diagnose if I have some bad sectors on internal memory?
TY

First impressions

Having flashed and played around with Ubuntu on my N4 I have found that it looks good but, as you would expect from the sort of build, that it is barely usable.
The browser app only produces a white screen and most things are generally broken, to be honest, I'm not in the least bit surprised seeing as it's a dev build but it would be nice if things worked a bit better.
I also noticed there was no way of accessing settings of any sort, aside from network settings. This may well be an oversight on my part but I did dig quite a bit.
I have not had a chance to play with the SDK as I'm on windows and can't find anyway to install/use it (and I really can't be bothered) so I have no comments on that.
From what I could tell, performance was pretty good, but that may just be the N4, and I noticed no huge drain in battery when I restored my CM10 backup, aside from what you'd expect from a backup, flash and restore.
I couldn't figure out how to use the docking mode (nor do I know if it's even in this version) so I also cannot comment on that.
However, I think I will be sticking to CM10 for now and I'll wait for a more usable version to come out before I begin to use Ubuntu more often.
How has everyone else found it?

Edited because people are too stupid and/or lazy to pay attention to when something is posted. Good job there.

Looks good
I installed Ubuntu on my galaxy nexus and while it does look good, it is very laggy and slow to respond to touch commands. Browser works fine but very slowly. I too did not find any "settings" menu or options. The camera works just fine and so does the gallery. Power button does the usual lock/unlock action, but the volume buttons seem to do nothing. Haven't heard any sounds on the device either. Will keep exploring the OS but so far, it really does feel like a preview, as Canonical has described.
Calls and sms work, and so does wifi. When i plugged in the headset during a call however, it did not work at all.
It is available for the Verizon s3 on RootzWiki just Google it.

One other thing I noticed when I was on my commute to school was that I couldn't turn off wifi, which did not help my battery, I do still really like the ui and I'm sure that it will be really good when it is finished

is it really that hard to search for this info using Google before you waste space in a thread?

Yeah the browser work fine when I tried it, just really slowly.

Tried it on my nexus 7, the device was lagging almost constantly. I do like the UI itself though, it looks quite refined and easy on the eyes, much like desktop Ubuntu.

The browser worked for me, and I'm on a galaxy nexus.
You can access volume controls and brightness controls the same way you can network (note brightness is under battery indicator). There is no way to set date and time except from command line via adb or ssh. Out of curiosity what other settings would others like to access?
For the SDK, although I can't use QtCreator I am able to edit and compile code from a Windows 7 computer on the phone itself, using ssh with vim qmake, and even run some GUI programs using an X server, like gedit and meld.
Docking mode is unavailable, as far as I can tell. It probably will not be available until Mir is released, since I think the rootless X is being worked on for Mir.
I think Ubuntu Touch has a lot of potential.
Is this supported by all phone?
