I Propose that we go back to basics on the Newest 2.1 rom. They have the source, the offical rom, and now i feel we need to start from the begining to make a better end. The Evo is coming closer to our grasps, but those of us who can't afford it will stay with the Hero until we can get it for as long as a year or more. I know after watching the forums for quite some time that one problem has plaugued the functionality of the HTC Hero and the MT3G (Since Mt3g was my first android phone).
The Navigation of the Hero is something to be less desired of. There are three reasons why I feel, if this problem were fixed, could help us enjoy our devices a little better.
First, Overall navigation. The navigation seems to lag even when the phone is overclocked it feels like when you touch the screen it is not communicating with drivers or hardware directly and feels like it has to go through unneccessary checks and balances before telling hardware where your finger is at.
Second, Call Navigation. How many times have you ended a call only to dial another person when you put it in your pocket after locking the screen? Sure there are some who will say "I don't have this problem" Thats like saying "I am not human" I have watched my phone lag when navigating call menu's and im sure you all have as well.
Third, Music Navigation. The music application on the Hero is apauling at best. It lags and sometimes skips over several songs when forwarding to the next track. Even overclocked to 700 mhz the music app is not as responsive as it should be compared to other mp3 capable phones.
What it boils down to? No, this is not a rant. This is a proposal of back to basics and I feel regardless of how fast we can make the phones or how much we can strip the roms we will never be happy unless we solve the navigational issues driving this amazing piece of hardware down. If I had the capable means I would. I do not. I can only make proposals and suggestions hoping that the devs will see the same light I see in the same tunnel.
What do you think? Please be adult about this and creative answers only.
Theres an app for the dialer problem called Not Call Log found in the market. It seemes to be quicker when using a 1.5 ROM, but still does the trick.
I agree. Now that 2.1 has be released I think focus should be on it. However I'm sure there are devs that are doing so behind the scenes. I know Fresh has got a pretty sweet Rom out.

I'm pretty disappointed in the Xoom so far. My Droid X seems to perform better than it, despite it's single core. Is there hope for the following issues? I don't want to return my Xoom, but I'm just a tad upset spending so much on it...
These are the problems I'm having:
Slow downs using YouTube app
Slow downs on home screens and app drawer
Poor browser performance on all browsers (speed, display, text input)
Video recording and playback is choppy/unreliable
Bluetooth tether to Droid X is hit and miss (WiFi works fine)
Volume buttons are darn near impossible to use (lol)
I realize these are all software issues, and CAN be fixed, but does it seem likely? I know the G1 still has development going on and just want to get the most out of this mammoth.
I hate to say it, but I think there might be something wrong with your XOOM since I have experienced none of those problems. Perhaps it needs a factory reset or something?
I definitely agree regarding the volume buttons though, very frustrating to use! Thankfully you only have to hit either one once and then you can control the slider on screen.

Only problem I have from your list is youtube HD playback. Rest is perfectly fine.
I've found the Xoom to be sluggish at places, even after factory resets. I do think it's a software problem as my O2X (same Tegra chip) isn't slow at all.
Overall it feels like Honeycomb was a bit rushed, and that some things could use a bit more performance tuning.
I think this may be some issue with your device hardware. I got no such slowdowns on my xoom. I concur sometimes youtube hd playback can be sluggish, but it depends on the wifi you're connectrd to speed.

mine works fine except hd videos in youtube. disable the hd once u can n it will be fast. u can try a factory reset too
one question: How long have you had your xoom?
The reason I ask is for the first couple days after i got my xoom I was AMAZED by how much slower it was than my EVO. After a couple days though it seemed to smooth out and pick up speed.
Overall I'm less impressed with the xoom than I expected to be but I would recommend to any new xoom owner to reserve forming any opinions about it until it sees at least a couple days use.
I guess I'll ride it out for a few more days. I've had it about 4 days. I'll likely go play with a display and see what I get.
Have you flashed a new kernel? The latest tiamat kernel is (in my experience) smoother then stock (and has SD support). But the main thing is wait a few more days for the slowness to stop.

also you might want to take it back and exchange it i had a bad power button and a few of the problems you have stated in your post so i took mine back and exchanged. Second one worked great and fine so i decided to keep my xoom and root it.
Never had any of those issues listed either. Might want to try the Tiamat kernal and see if that helps out.
Maybe a lemon. Go back to exchange it. Mine is working kicking ass.
OK, so I installed the 1.4.1 Tiamat kernel and wiped data. She seems to be running much better now. The typing in web pages is still a little slow, but I no longer get repeated letters when typing quickly. That was a big problem. I'm much happier, but some things are still a little slow. Looks like things could get better. Thanks for the help. If it's still slow next week after no wipes I'll exchange it as suggested.

I noticed the same thing. I rooted as soon as it was available and even with OC it just wasn't smooth. I couldn't get a single live wallpaper to run without slowing the Xoom to a crawl. Then last night I flashed the latest Tiamat kernel and its like a brand new Xoom!
I was going to go back to factory to see if that was the issue, but instead I tried the kernel first. So the two things I did was flash Clockwork recovery and flashed the Tiamat kernel (which cleared cache and Dalvik cache). Whatever it was, its awesome and I have been downloading all the live wallpapers just cause I can!
Mine was a little slow as well and seemed to balance out. Still not as smooth as my Evo for video though, which is depressing. I really expected to see updates by now to fine-tune things.
The silicone cover from Moto completely resolves the volume button issues by making them more prominent and easy to find.

This doesn't sound anything like a xoom to me. Mine has been running very smoothly from the moment I first turned it on. I even tried to OC to 1.5Ghz but then I changed back to 1Ghz cause it was unnecessary. Maybe you should ask moto to check if there's anything wrong with ur xoom or even get you another one .
i dont know is that normal but my iconia a500 is very lagy whit only 2 pages opet like facebook or cnn...i have the latest 3.2 offical

I also have 3.2 rooted with ad block and in Pulse Reader, it lags like hell, pages load without full content and the socalled "flash" is inexistent most of the time. Scrolling is crap, tired of stuttering. Everybody that say that their tablet is "smooth", either lie, or have no perception of smoothness. They should try an apple bitten logo tablet, I won't say the name, because haters will flame me.
Or they have overclocked like hell, but i don't like overclocking, it eats battery like a termite. And standby is crap also, only 2-3 days max, compared to 30 like "others".

I have a perfect perception of smoothness and I'm not going to lie to you - I have A500 with Lightspeed 1.0.4 with stock kernel. Runs SMOOTH AS BUTTER! My brother owns an iPAD 2 and trust me I've played a lot with this useless (for me) thing if that's the idea of "ultimate smoothness". OK, this thread is not about iPADs vs Android tablets (no matter your conclusion that every Android tablet is ****ty), its about the lag OP experienced with OTA 3.2 . huurux , either go ahead for a custom ROM or return your device for replacement.
Having the same problem since i downloaded ota 3.2. When i say lag, i meant like it takes me a couple of minutes to open up an app (not a specific app, almost any app causes the lag) and even that, when i try to execute anything with the app it takes a few more minutes. Android Market also tells me i have updates for my apps, click on update, and the download status bar will marquee endlessly and would not let me download anything. Was thinking i had a bad update.
My question is (and help me out cause i am a noob): Is there a way i can reflash the stock ota 3.2? I have tried the "check for update" but it will just tell me that my android is up-to-date. Please help, have tried looking in the forum but couldnt find a similar solution.
Another noobish question: If i factory reset i assume it will wipe all data. Is there an easy way i can reinstall all the apps i previously had before the factory reset? If so, will i be able to retain all the progress i made in the app? (eg: game progress, rss list, etc)Tks in advance =)

Get Titanium backup from Market - its the most usefull app for me that's why I got the paid version. It will backup all your apps with data. The free version would also do the job for you but the batch process of restoring apps later will require pressing OK on each app that is currently being restored.

Try to download Titanium Backup from their web site. As for the lag, I'm on stock 3.2 and I don't have any lag, the tablet runs even faster than with 3.2, so something is causing the lag on your tablet, I suspect a bad application, it happened to me with my iPad and iTouch, that went slow as molasses, and it was bad application. Uninstalled and everything got fine.
So for those so quickly to blame any android tablet, pleas check first that really you didn't install any crap application, specially cracked or pirated ones, that is slowing the system.

I also have this "LightSpeed" ROM, is laggy as hell, this is not a hardware problem, tried with a different Iconia, I also had a TF101, it was a bit better, but lack of USB on the slate made me chose the Iconia.
Sorry but this is about all Android tablets, and I must apologize to you, but I don't believe you. There is no smoothness in ANY Android device.
Ok, recommend a ROM that has the lowest lag, I'll try it.
I really don't get any slowdowns. I am however using tabooney with Richard trip kernel set tobuserspace in setcpu. Its been really good for me

I'm running EZTerry's "stock" rooted 3.2 OTA ROM without any lag, choppiness, or basically any issues at all. My battery life is what it's always been since buying it in May.
Unfortunately for the OP, if you accepted the OTA you can no longer root so apps like Titanium Backup or flashing a different ROM are no longer an option. You'll have to wait for someone to get root for OTA 3.2.
If you don't mind losing some of your apps, you can try a factory reset, load one app at a time from the market, and see if you can determine if an app is causing your problems.
Deio, continuing to call the A500 community liars and idiots in thread after thread is likely not going to result in much help coming your way. At this point my only advice to you is to eBay your A500 and go buy an iPad. Clearly, the A500 is simply not the device for you and you're never going to be happy with it.

I've noticed a significant lag when the power plug is on (especially the touchscreen), as soon as I unplug the power cordless everything run smooth... weird

My roommate has the Transformer and I have the Iconia, we both lag like hell every two to three hours for about 5-10mins.

I also have the power/charge lag problem. I'm on stock rooted 3.1 using Richard Tripp's kernel to OC 1.4. Lagging during charging/ac power has been a problem for my A500 since new, with no root. Something about this engineering that makes it a problem for some units.
Going to load Taboonay and see if it makes a difference.

My config A500 3.1 rooted, I didn't have this issue be4 3.1 update.
Try thors newest v11. I only get lag on this website for some reason, it takes a quick second for the whole page to show. Its hit and miss. Every now and then it will go away. I watch alot of 720p videos. Both streaming from my home server or downloaded to one of my sdcards. All my daily uses, email, surfing, videos, etc. have almost no lag.
Ok here we go...
The best I can guess from reading about all of your lag problems is that there is a program or programs that are running in your background processes and eating up cpu/memory. Go to settings-applications-running applications and see what is on right now; subsequently see what is running directly after a reboot. If a bunch of random apps are running, it is very likely they are causing the lag. Especially if they are syncing or accessing the web. My suggestion would be to either uninstall these apps or go into their individual settings and turn off anything that would have it constantly working (not just running, it is ok for some apps to run in the background, as Android is programmed to control memory usage while allowing apps to run when not it use, but specifically 'working' in the background will eat up resources). Also, how often do you have your syncs scheduled? Any info that you do not need to have constantly synced (ie backup email addresses, facebook, weather intervals, etc.) should be either turned off or set to sync only a few times a day. For example, I have 11 running apps right now (been running without a reboot for a few days), consisting mainly of core Android processes, my keyboard, email, cpu scaler, and just 2 apps that I have downloaded that run in the background (mind you I have about 50 apps installed).
Furthermore...
All this talk about the iPad and how smooth it is...that's because it utilizes hardware accelerated graphics, something that Android will now have with the release of Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0. True, the level of smoothness on an iPad typically surpasses that of an Android device, but that is soon to change. Then what will the iPad really have? A boring home screen that consists of nothing more than only our app drawer and a ton of games. Android brings WAY more to the table, no question about it.

I am running a custom rom (Taboonay 2.1b) with an overclocked/undervolted processor (1.4ghz -150mv) and my Iconia gets kick ass battery life. I need to really try to kill this thing, no joke. I play hi-def/3d games, watch flash content on the web, Netflix, internet browsing, email, create word docs, use external usb peripherals, and more. To get the best battery life you just have to be smart about it.
Suggestions:
Turn off auto backlight. I don't think it works very well on the Iconia anyway, I have my brightness set at about 20% and it's perfectly visible (if you're used to having it brighter give it some time, you'll adjust) and when I am in bright light I simply change it as needed.
Check sync schedule. Weather really only needs to be updated like every 3 hours at most. Do you really need to know the temperature AS it changes? Don't think so.
Do you have multiple email addresses? Unless they are work related, you can probably just set them to sync manually and check it a couple times a day without it turning on itself.
Facebook/Twitter syncing is the devil. Unless you are a 15 year old girl that needs to know what her bff is doing at all times, slow down the sync on these apps!
Is your WiFi set to turn off with your screen? This is a BIG ONE! Settings-Wireless/Networks-WiFi Settings-WiFi Disconnect Policy-When Screen Turns Off. You'll notice a change immediately.
For some more info on what's killing your battery, and therefore more than likely sucking up resources and causing lag, go to Settings-Applications-Battery Use. The blue lines should line up accordingly: Your device should only be Awake and have the WiFi on when the Screen is on, except for a few dashes here and there for normal syncing. Large blue squares of Awake when the screen isn't on means something is running in the background that probably shouldn't be. WiFi on all the time kills battery. Get it? Also, the list of apps that take up battery should only be ones that YOU KNOW you are using on a constant basis. If something is on there that you don't normally use a lot, it means it's running in the background and sucking up a lot of resources (other than screen, tablet idle, and Android OS, these should be there).
Moral of the story...
I gave my 3 year old kids my iPhone. It's a kids toy, same with the iPad. Period. An Android device is one of the most powerful, customizable and capable devices available. There is a lot more that can be done with it than with most other more simple devices. With great power comes great responsibility. Take control of your device, what you do with it and what it does. Lag? What lag.

Honestly, I couldn't have said it better myself. I'm running stock unrooted 3.2(mostly because I've been too lazy to revert back to a rooted ROM)and have very little to no lag. Realizing that its all personal perception and that I gave my Ipod to my kid so I don't really have anything to compare it to, I'm way more than happy with the performance of my tablet. The only time I have to wait is when I open up the Acer content folders, sometimes it takes a second or two for them to open. I can definitely live with that, if the trade off is a fully usable tablet that I can customize to my own needs. Battery life is well above expectations as well for me. Usually two days of semi-heavy use before I start to get that panicky feeling that comes when my battery meter drops below 30%.
I'm thinking about getting a Kindle Fire. I really don't know what I'd quite do with a tablet, but I imagine I could find some uses for it. I don't really read books very often, so I wouldn't use the Fire as an e-reader.
The main thing I think I'd use it for is web browsing and IRC, and thus begs one my main questions: how is browsing on a 1024x600 display? Is it able to display full websites well?
Next, I don't really like the default Fire UI. It seems like too much of a novelty. How easy is it to root the tablet and install a custom ROM? How stable are any of the ICS ROMs right now?
Last, I just don't know if I really need it. If I do get a Fire, I'd get it at Walmart. With their $50 gift card offer and my 10% associate discount, I figure I can grab one for about ~$130. At that price point, it seems like too good of a deal to pass up, but I don't know if I should just save my money on something else or just bite the bullet and buy one. I'm still kicking myself on not jumping on the $99 TouchPad deal last year. LOL.

I bought my KF for 200$ a week ago & Im still amazed with what this thing can put up. You should have no problem browsing webs or playing games at all, & I even love the default browser better than dolphin or opera xD (really love the side-touch menu )
And the stable roms would be those CM7 with ICS theme, rooting can be a bit hard at first but after 2 days you should get everything on the track
After buying this, I thought to myself how fool I was to pay 700$ for my old japanese 3d smartphone
I use my KF to read and web browsing and it's perfect for it. I'm using a Ics rom and is almost perfect. It has just few bugs, nothing important, at least for me.
The root is really easy, just use the KFU, you can find it in the developer thread.
For me was a great purchase, I highly recommend it.

Short of rooting and installing a new ROM, you can simply download and install the "GoLauncher EX" from the market (free). No rooting necessary. It's a fantastic replacement for the Fire UI and it gives the tablet the look and feel of "Gingerbread." Neall
Thanks for the replies thus far! I've just been looking into alternative launchers for the Fire instead of doing a full-out root/custom ROM. Some of the third-party launchers look pretty nice and really look to give the Fire a proper tablet appearance. I assume Google Apps (Gmail, Maps, Market) are available for non-rooted devices? Those are a must for me.
Browsing is fine. Definitely capable of running almost every site. Rooting is easy. Haven't tried ICS ROMs yet, only messing with my themes for now.

You would need to root your KF to install the Android Market and get those apps, but with the information on the forums it is very easy. The first handful of threads in the development forums have all the information you need.
Picked it up tonight. It's got some nice hardware. For now, I've installed ADW.Launcher EX to give it more of a Gingerbread feel, but something just feels a bit off compared to a proper Android 2.x experience. I can't quite put my finger on it.
Root and install CM7 and that feeling will go away.

if you want a tablet i would suggest aganst the fire. its a great device that is primarily for reading books. here at xda it has been transformed into a tablet but i truely believe a native tablet is the way to go in terms of video and web consumption.
yes the kindle can handle it but a native tablet can do it better. also please consider the smaller ram, processor and non expandable memory

YMMV. I had been debating on weather to buy a KF or an ASUS Transformer. I know, huge difference in price and specs. My co-worker has had an ASUS for a couple of months now and he loves it. But I ask him what he does with it and he plays a few games, checks email, facebook, internet...maybe watch a few videos and listen to music.
Well I bought the KF this week from WM and promptly rooted and flashed CM7 (barebones). I couldn't be happier. It does all of the things I just mentioned. It may not play Tegra games....but that's not a big deal. We have at home an Xbox 360, PS3, a laptop and PC, plus two iPod touches and my EVO 3D. So we are covered for gaming purposes.
Last night I watched video over my sling box Dish DVR and it worked very well. Then I watched a video over Hulu Plus and it was fantastic. Haven't tried Netflix yet (we quit a few months ago).
So for $150 (Walmart this week) vs. at least double that for the Asus or more. The KF meets my needs and probably most everyone else's too.
Swapped out ADW.Launcher EX for GO Launcher EX. GO seems to be a bit more stable than ADW and seems to be a lot more customizable. It's becoming a bit more usable. I'll probably not bother rooting and installing any ROMs until ICS becomes a bit more stable and mature.

Last night I watched video over my sling box Dish DVR and it worked very well. Then I watched a video over Hulu Plus and it was fantastic. Haven't tried Netflix yet (we quit a few months ago).
So for $150 (Walmart this week) vs. at least double that for the Asus or more. The KF meets my needs and probably most everyone else's too.

i bought mine from craigslist and am pretty happy with the fire. lol i actually paid for half of it with giftcards. haha. i mostly screw around on the "tablet" but miss the hdmi and usb of the thrive sometimes. for about 100 buxs i can live without it though

Rooting and installing bootloader/recovery are all quite easy thanks to the Kindle Fire Utility (latest version 0.9.3 works well with latest 6.2.2 kindle firmware), but i think the hardest part for most users is getting the correct ADB drivers installed so your PC can actually speak the same language as the Kindle (there are great guides for all of this though). Once that part is done, the rest is a breeze with KFU. I just installed barebones CM7 last night and am VERY impressed. Only FC I have gotten so far is when using the XDA app. Ironic?? Happy rooting!

Have you found a way with GoLauncherEX to disable the status bar that's always showing? I know that some apps disable it natively, but it bugs me that the status bar is always showing as well as the GoLauncher dock. Seems repetitive. But maybe there's a way in the settings and I just couldn't find. However, I did install CM7 last night which uses ADW by default and I'm pretty impressed with how swiping down will hide the status bar/notification area and give you a totally full screen experience. Very nice for screen-gazers such as myself!
I started with root and the Go launcher which ran well but I decided to try out the beta cm9 build and it is amazing. Its still very much a work in progress but so much more suited for a tablet. Runs like a dream and most apps install with no problems. Even video is working pretty well (just no Netflix)
You could expand the kindle's memory with few wires, male/female adaptor, and a hardrive/smartphone/w.e

I've had my tf101 for a few months now and it has been good but it doesn't live up to my laptop at all. I can't browse as quickly as I am used to and although it's great for travelling, I keep missing my laptop.
It has been good to use, don't get me wrong but nowadays it's difficult to use the browser. Both browser and ics browser+ keep freezing and I honestly feel like returning it. I've had it for 5 months but am I right in that Amazon won't let me return it after this long?
I'm not sure how to sell it either as I don't want to sell something to someone that I am not happy with 100%. Honestly, it's a good tablet but I really miss my laptop (I'm a fast typer and browser so perhaps this is why it freezes as I a too fast) but I also don't want to root it and add custo roms so perhaps someone else who can do that will be better with my tablet.
Anyone else passed on their tablet? is it too late to return it?
The stock browser definitely has it's problems, have you tried installing chrome or firefox and seen how that works for you? Unfortunately keyboard lag is not something android seems to be able to get a grip on - but that's an issue across many devices.
You can still sell it and just be honest about your experience in the product description; there will still be people willing to buy it.
First, you should try another browser, as alan said (chrome, firefox, skyfire, dolphin etc...) and another keyboard (slidekey for example).
And if it doesn't work, may be is it because of another program, so may be reset the tablet will fix the problem ?

I realized that slow internet connection will cause the freezing of the browsers or even fc.
I had the same experience with the browser and had initial buyers remorse too. My advice is to Root, I know you said you didn't want to...you won't regret it. I love the Revolver Rom with the Harmony kernel overclocked to 1500. This setup has been very good to me, and I've tried them all (including JB). If you still won't root, try changing the channels on your router to a less commonly used channel (this helped some, when I first got my tf101). Additionally, this is something I just found out this week, try moving really close to you wireless router (like a foot away) and se if your speeds/browser experience improves. My router is behind my TV and for ****s and giggles I did a speed test from my couch 10 feet away and got half the speeds! 30mbps near the router and 15mbps at the couch. I'm not sure if it's a weak wifi antenna in the Asus, or a weak router broadcast. Anyway...just my 2 cents...hopefully it helps somewhat.

Are you still on the stock rom?
It's not a question of the browser. Do you know that time when a normal computer is too slow and you need to clean it or even format it to take all the junk off? So that's is what's going on with your tablet.
You can full wipe to the Android system and it will be like new again but if it was me i would root it and installed a custom ROM as they come all tweak and way faster then the original ones...
If you want to give it a smooth touch install a launcher. It will be awesome :good:

I never had any issues with the stock browser on honeycomb. Problem was honeycomb sucked. Loaded prime with honeycomb and still had no issues, but used dolphin more. Once ICS came out, the stock browser was greatly improved. I favor it over dolphin now. I did have an issue with the browser "freezing" but it wasn't unresponsive, it just wouldn't load pages after a few minutes of use. But, the issue happened with dolphin and chome as well. turned out to be the rom i was using. Chrome sucks anyway. No flash and it's a lot slower than the pc version.
There's a problem with Chrome - it always freezes. when I go to, say, homescreen (after freezing) and back to chrome, it has turned to simply black screen. And I have to kill the app and start over. It happens quite often. Otherwise it would be the best browser as it can do certain things in certain websites that none of those other browsers can.
As for OP's problem.. well, maybe laptop would be better, as android tablets still can't compare with it, no matter what they say. They're not just for anywone. Not yet.

Same problem here. Chrome freezes every 5 minutes, no idea why
The browser isn't much better, although it crash less often it is quite slower....

Well, after 1.5 years and many, many ROMs - even JB now, the browsers still suck. Freezes, crashes, losing of tabs. It's the problem with Transformer most likely because it seems that my phones are free of those problems and didn't see similar reports from users of other brand tablets.
