I posted this in the [MOD] HDMI Landscape Mirroring thread in Development, but the post didn't get much attention there.
For anyone who has not seen it, I wanted to post it in general with a slightly better step by step.
WHY?: Yes, LS HDMI mirroring does already exist in Darkside and Wet Dream, however NOT on the lapdock. On the lapdock, the only option is webtop.
What's wrong with webtop? Nothing really...if you want to surf the internet. However, if you want to play a game on the lapdock, things get quite laggy. Playing Super Mario World using SNESDroid inside webtop is VERY laggy. When doing LS HDMI mirroring, the lag almost vanishes.
Who is this trick good for?
People who do not use Entertainment Center or the other HDMI options.
People who want to play games on lapdock.
People who want full screen LS HDMI with mouse and keyboard support on the lapdock.
People who don't like the idea of webtop but like LS HDMI.
People who like being able to choose between webtop and LS HDMI on their lapdock
How do we do this?
First time only
1. Open your lapdock, set the Atrix on it only partially. So that only the HDMI is recognized (The left half of the phone will be raised slightly). If you have a HD TV and an HDMI cable, you can simply plug the cable into the TV.
2. When the dialog pops up, check "Remember my selection" and choose Mirror phone display.
3. Close the lapdock and properly dock the phone. Instead of HDMI, it should register as "multimedia station".
4. Check "Remember my selection" and choose Mirror phone on display
5. Undock the Atrix and then open the lapdock.
6. Plug the Atrix into the lapdock and start pressing ESC
7. Continue pressing ESC until the big red M disappears. When it disappears press ESC one or two more times
8.The screen will flicker a few times, try to be patient. You will end up in either Webtop or LS HDMI with mouse and keyboard support.
9. If you ended up in LS HDMI, you are good to go. If you ended up in webtop, start over at step 5.
Notes:
It definitely helps to have no apps open and be just on your launcher screen when you start
It will probably take a few tries to get the hang of it, but I can do it pretty consistently now.
After a period of inactivity, you will get kicked out of LS HDMI and webtop will automatically load up.
If someone figures out how to get LS HDMI working on CM7, this is probably easier to achieve than a full webtop.
I have tested this on TWO Atrixes, one running Wet Dream 1.4.3, the other running Darkside Prefinal.
I will try to record a video of the process here in the next couple days.
If anyone has anything to add, feedback, or a better format for the post, I would be more than happy to edit this.
Sorry to bump my own thread, but I will most likely not be posting a video since LS HDMI works with a little less hassle in the latest CM7 weekly. If you do not mind completely losing webtop, it isn't a bad option.
However, if someone else records a video I would be more than happy to stick it in the first post. The method works and is worth the potential couple attempts if you enjoy webtop from time to time as well
Thanks for the method! I'm trying it, haven't succeeded yet. The "M" always disppear very fast and then webtop pops up. And under some circumstances first the mirroring video with a huge cursor first comes up and then replaced by webtop.
Is timing very important when pressing ESC?
And, am I getting it wrong? I repeatedly pressed ESC, am I supposed to hold it down and wait for "M" and then tap twice again?
I'll keep trying... Because webtop give me VimWiki and git, I cannot go without it :-D
BTW: The power problem: There's an option in android settings, to prevent the phone from suspending while in charge. It worked for me when my method was still effective.

If you are occasionally seeing the big arrow on the screen, you are getting close. Tap ESC all the way through the M. I don't think the timing of it mattered much though. You can try tapping just once after it goes away. I said two initially because I found that too many times always rejected it. But one time might not be at the right moment.
I think you will be a master of the method soon. Getting the mirroring to show up even for a second means you are getting there

Hi MyronJ906:
It works! Just as you describbed, M,tap esc all the way, a few flickering, and bingo!

BTW I'm running on a modded ROM based on official Chinese 2.3 ROM.
Confirmed working for me too. I like my full linux webtop better than mirroring though.
I discovered that if I dock the phone before opening the lid, the M will persist for longer and thus achieving greater chance.
I'm surprised that only after the first success, the behavior becomes so consistent.

That is pretty much what happened for me to. Before I switched to CM, I could get it about 90% of the time. It is great for gaming and the option to still use webtop when you please is wonderful.
Glad to see some people getting it working. Haha I just wish I understood WHY it worked.

I believe it works because pressing escape while webtop is initializing simply ends the process and it defaults to mirror over HDMI.

Works great for me too!
I'm on the latest WetDream Light.
The only drawback is that the graphic detail on screen get's very jaggy. I tried changing the HDMI overscan but that didn't help.
Kinda cool for some horizontal games, but for everything else, I rather use my heavily modded Gnome Webtop...
Thanks for sharing MyronJ906 !!!
You might consider trying a higher LCD density. I bet a higher resolution makes it look a little better mirrored. I have mainly been mirroring on my lap dock to take notes through Evernote or play Grand Theft Auto with my playstation controller. It plays great once it is setup.
Playing Mario and Sonic with the lapdock keyboard is pretty great as well.
But for actual computing tasks, I would agree. Webtop wins.
I am definitely loving mirroring on Neutrino right now though. Makes gaming GREAT

You are right about the density change. Right now I'm on 240.
I will try some higher numbers and post results.
I'm tempted to get a PS3 controller just for this GTA3 setup! :-D
Thanks for the recommendation!

I used LCD Density Modder Pro to change my density since it also includes a market fix. (That spoofs density as 240 so that you won't get random app incompatibilities)
I'm using 175 right now and it seems pretty nice for both lapdock and normal phone use. 180/185 are also pretty great.
But if you're looking for something a little less extreme there is nothing wrong with 200. It's a pretty good middle ground

I opened up market today, hit the tablet section, and I was so excited as a ton of apps showed up. but, then i realized that the same 20 apps just kept repeating.
Any one else see that?
Ha yes....same with me. I had checked earlier so when I checked this afternoon and saw tons I was very excited. That is, until I looked closer
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
I see the same thing but at least there's 4 more apps on the list!
What a sick, sick joke, Google.
It just keeps scrolling ad infinitum!
It'll pick up soon enough. A lot of apps already on the market, even though they should work fine on honeycomb, will have things like "android.hardware.telephony" features enabled, which will by default hide it in the market from honeycomb tablets (which lack telephony). It's a shame that the devices were released so soon after the Honeycomb API was released, but give the devs a week or so to test and tweak and a lot more should pop up once the they've amended their manifests. I quite like how Android is the complete opposite to Apple when it comes to launches, but I can see how it could be annoying .
There's definitely a few new apps in that list, trust me
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
it just got updated with a list of feature. limited atm, but it's growing
It was a glitch and quickly patched. However, I had that glitch a few days go, not today.
Google is tweaking the Market app almost everyday it appears.
Spare parts question
I have a Tab and I use an app called Spare Parts that resizes (scales) phone apps to work on the Tab. Have you tried it on the Xoom?
For me the list was at least 40% longer. I installed like 7 or 8 new things. I am tempted to try the updated Thumbit Keyboard, but I am unsure. I am cheap and even 2$ would be terrible to waste.
that keyboard is awesome. You shouldn't regret it.
Tell me if anyone else notices this. Whenever you are searching apps in the market and click on an app, and then you go back it puts you all the way back up to the very top of the app list forcing you to start all the way from the beginning all over again! When you hit back it should bring you back to where you left off instead of starting all over at the top of the list. And it does it every single time too! Its annoying! Especially when you are just looking around at apps to download, you might get very far down on the list and then... BAM! You will have to start over when you click an app to view more info about it. Who feels the pain on that? This needs a fix ASAP!

I went and bought it. It's really just like $1.67 but I figured it would hold me over till SwiftKey released their tablet version (it's in BETA currently).
...this is actually really nice. Glad I found it, very easy vs. the default keyboard. It has a settings option for what screen size you have, just pick 10in and it adjusts accordingly...very happy with my purchase.

I bought it too. It gets the job done. I find that it seems to repeat my letters alot so I have to type at a steady pace. We'll see how it works out. I feel like it's designed for smaller fingers/hands than mine.
I am a swiftkey guy so I can't wait until they release it
I bought Thumbit too. I like having multiple keyboards to choose from. Sometimes, I'm at table and the stock keyboard works well. Sometimes, I'm holding it in one hand with a stylus in the other and the slideIt keyboard works well. i use thumbit if i'm sitting on the couch holding it in two hands. All worth it.
I am waiting for swype though.
My biggest problem with non-stock keyboards is that the windows doesn't show the rest of the page, but rather an input window of sorts. That is, if i'm entering information on a webpage, using the stock keyboard, I can still see the rest of the page and navigate around it, but using anything else, I can't./

I see 32 apps none repeated.
Woke up to 11 new apps in the Tablet section of the market this morning.
Oddly enough, I feel like a couple of them don't belong there yet.
Evernote, which actually isn't tablet optimized (small icons, no multiple fragments for easier navigation, etc), but works.
and Bonsai Blast, which also works but looks like crap because it's just stretched and not in HD for the tablet.
title says it all; its a PITA to reach around through the case to turn the screen on all the time, and, even though the screen is supposed to come on when you push the menu key on the hardware keyboard, it doesnt work that way, at least for me..
Can anyone offer any other suggestions?
I know once I root this, there will be other choices, but, I want to learn more about the device before I root it
thanks so much for your help!
no, since xoom doesnt have soft keys so the only way to turn the screen on its to touch the power button. in other terms if you want to wake the xoom up when screen is off you need to press power button.
hopefully, some one will develop a software fix
for this; I cant be the only person that is annoyed by this..
thanks!
What's so hard about pressing the power button?

if you have the motorola folio case on it, its a pain reaching through the cut out every few minutes to turn the screen on..
Idk if it works on the xoom but simply lockscreen on the market has a feature that uses the devices proximity sensor to unlock the phone, it might be just what you are looking for. Like I said, not sure about compatibility but the developer is pretty active here on xda and he might be able to figure something out.

The Xoom does not have a proximity sensor. One developer that frequents the forms and gave us all a screenshot app for the Xoom for free, has an App Killswitch which does the opposite action that you want. When you close the case, the light sensor senses the darkness and turns the screen off. It would take more battery but likewise would be possible to do it the way you wish when opening the cover. Maybe if we ask nicely, he can make it happen
well, I installed nolock, from the market, and it reduces the steps to one to get the screen on; when you push the power button, there is no lock screen to go through, which helps, but I wish there was a way to wake it up with either the keyboard, or just tapping the screen..
I'm sure this will come one of these days..
EDIT: It only works sometimes, not ready for 3.0 I guess....
It is possible but will not work until we have a deodexed ROM. The is a way to remap the volume keys to wake the screen but as soon as the keyguard kicks in the volume keys are disabled. With a deodexed ROM I can disable keyguard. An alterative option I might be able to work out is to wake the screen with a paired keyboard via blurtooth. So far in my testing this is working well.
Basically I have mapped the F1 key on my keyboard to wake/sleep the Xoom.

Try to push the below file using adb ... you need root for this to work. After rebooting the right ctrl key on the Motorola keyboard should become a power button for you. Let the screen goto sleep for a few minutes and attempt to wake it using the button. Let me know if this works.
Download:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?hsqqsehpcjr812t
ADB PUSH:
adb remount
adb push Vendor_22b8_Product_093d.kl \system\usr\keylayout\Vendor_22b8_Product_093d.kl
adb reboot
Make sure you unplug the USB cable before testing. I think while it is plugged into USB keyguard is disabled.
EDIT:
Getting Back to Default Settings:

I appreciate it man, but I haven't rooted the xoom yet..
I want to wait a bit, and learn it better before I do.
Even when I got my evo last june, I waited a few weeks b4 rooting to learn it beter.
thank you for the file!
This has been discussed many times on this forum.
Long story short, I agree with you, especially since I leave the xoom on a table during a meeting. My solution...I downloaded Widgetsoid2.x. Among other widgets, I have a no turn-off widget on my main page. walking into a meeting, i hit it, forcing the xoom to stay on. obviously kills the battery, but i still get two full days.
not pretty, but it works.

I personally don't like the power button placement myself. It's all personal preference. But that's the benefit of getting and Android platform right? If something doesn't quite fit our preference we can personalize it. I think that's all the OP is asking for.

Posted the how-to in the dev section for Moto/Apple/Generic Bluetooth keyboards for those interested.
What is that you are doing that it is going to sleep? The easiest thing would be not to let it sleep so quick. Set the timeout to 15 minutes or something.
I guess I am still treating this like my EVO, which, doesnt get the best battery life if you leave it on too long..this thing gets awesum battery life, so I think I wll start leaving the screen on longer, until someone comes up with software that will wake it up easily..

Honestly,
They just turned the eeee-pad into "My first Laptop" with that hidious circle cursor. Perhaps, they should have at least put a point in the middle of the circle so you could pinpoint. For god sake ASUS, this one thing is absolutely aweful. Patch it quicky. Lets see how quick you can get this done to prevent dock returns to the retail outlets.
Just did the 3.2 update ota. Hate the new curser (using usb mouse still uses pointer) The zoom feature is interesting although I haven't found an app to use it on yet. The yellow copy paste arrow thing seems to be a little over an inch off. Oh yeah, I can still write to the sd card in the dock with astro using copy paste in menu
Everyone is complaining about the circle cursor. It's actually not that bad.
It doesn't affect me much as I rarely use the trackpad to select text.
It's easy for me to use the touchscreen to selec text.
Btw, the original cursor is still there if you use a mouse.

No what I mean is that if I want to control my tablet from my phone or vice versa, I can't see the screen of the device I control.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
It`s a great app i use it when watching movies etc but the text function dossent work so i can`t youtube or files and that makes me use a bt keybard instead
Sweet, I have an Xperia Play, if I can use it as a controller on my tablet, that would be awesome! Will have to try later!
works fine with nexus 7 and Samsung galaxy s3
I downloaded it so I could use my tablet to control my s3 which is docked into a hdmi cradle I'm looking for something that duplicates my phones screen on my tablet but this is working fine. even the keyboard works perfect can't actually click on a video tho after searching YouTube but I'm sure in future updates the option will be there not bad for a free app tho!
has anyone else used CM9 ls mirroring on the lapdock? seriously, it's like the coolest thing since potato chips.
i honestly have to assume that most people haven't tried it because well, we don't seem to have native resolution in mirroring yet.

sorry, i impulsively decided to clean my keyboard xD
Looking for this as well.
Tried it.
Isn't as appealing as it could be without the native resolution.
Neut CM7 hdmi mirroring works faster.
still waiting for the native resolution fix >__<
Although AT&T promised official ICS for the atrix in the recent months so we're up for a treat I hope.
native resolution really messes with the experience. but if you can get past it for now it's pretty awesome. it's WAY faster than webtop could ever dream and your phone battery/cpu doesn't heat up as much..not to mention the increase battery life on the lapdock itself. i can't use the thing long enough to kill it in one sitting. browsing the web with ICS Browser + via lapdock in CM9 is a treat especially with a mouse/scroll wheel
if these guys can manage a resolution fix it will literally replace webtop for me. i can use vnc if i need power apps on the go. which is laughable xD that's like anyone but a call girl or truck driver needing a bluetooth ear piece on their heads. imo

What ROM are you using for the CM9?
I had camera issues with CM9 that are solved only by rebooting :|

I completely agree with everything aaron said.
I'm running Turl's V8 and haven't had any problems, except for the battery life slowly decreasing. This seems to be resolved by a reflash though.
