After reading a few different articles on malicious apps in the market, it occured to me.
What about a developer (wish I could do it ) creating an app that operates similar to Little Snitch. For those that don't use a Mac, it's essentially a software firewall. You can set rules and permissions, and it informs you when an app is trying to go out.
http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html
It's a fantastic program on the mac. So what about something similar for the Android? Lets hear your thoughts. Wish I had the ability to code, but just don't know development at all.. but if there are any on here that want to partner up, hit me up!
What about Droid Wall?
I use that to limit which apps have access to the internet.
Didnt know about this one. Downloading now!
Droid wall lacks real time access to top dump log. So it's not that intuitive as Little Snitch.

Sorry for my TYPO I meant TCPDUMP
I'd imagine you'd want to ask the little snitch people or start learning to code in Java or something. But really good idea. I love Little Snitch. It's a bit annoying sometimes but I'd rather shoulder the burden of inconvenience then to be willfully blind about the MASSIVE amount of data being leached by every other app service and process on my system.
It would be bad ass to be able to deny apps to sending special data OTA.
Just saw this new video up on Moto's youtube page. Hopefully new spotlight video coming soon???

By the way everyone, if it's not showing up, then just change your date in settings to something a week from now and watch for the little bugger to show up on the bottom left of your screen!!
As cute as this thing is (and I downloaded Windy night too) I would rather have the space than have it on my phone. Does anyone know where these files are stored. I've done multiple google searches and can't find anything except some people are a bit upset like me that it just installs without asking and I was seeing people say you couldn't delete it (but I assume they aren't rooted). Since I'm rooted if I can find it I'll save it to my PC but clear the space on the phone. BTW Spotlight and this data take up 318 Megabytes!

Click "CLEAR DATA" and "CLEAR CACHE" to erase all but the measly 24.7 MB that Spotlight Player takes up by itself. If you want to remove it completely, use Titanium Backup to uninstall it (though MY suggestion is to simply "freeze" it).
Thanks, I did see that way to clear it but was hoping to copy the files to my PC in case I wanted to use them again at some point. Got 10 hard drives + and lotsa space in the main PC

I also tried busybox linux 'find' command using wildcards on bug but apparently that's not even what it uses for a name. Maybe if I knew the file extension type of these files I could find it but I don't know those yet....

Unless you are concerned that they will "go away", just re-download them again if you need them. These files will likely only ever work on the Moto X anyways, so when the device becomes obsolete you will have no way of playing them. As long as you just "freeze" the Spotlight app, you can always "unfreeze" it later and re-download the augmented-reality cartoons.
Anyways, just a really quick look with Root Browser shows that the relevant files appear to be in /data/data
There are a couple folders in there that might be what you are looking for. The first is com.motorola.avatar and I also see "com.motorola.bug2go". I don't have "windy night" downloaded so I'm not sure what its folder might be.
Good Luck.
Thanks again - I'll look in there. As it turns out these same 2 apps seem to be built in (or maybe downloaded by) the Google Virtual reality app 'cardboard'. I didn't have Wifi turned on and was in airplane mode so I tend to think they came with the cardboard app. Just got the cardboard VR kit today and since the Moto X is one of the officially supported phones I gave it a try. Very impressive in how it all works especially in panning around and up and down - just like being in a real place. Image quality was not quite as sharp as I had hoped but with a $17 VR kit I don't think you can expect too much It may also be the image resolution needs to be kept low in the app in order for it all to work with the existing power of the processors. My phone got noticeably warm in just a few minutes running this but fun stuff !
I have loved Android for years, and have a Cube T9 that has been my primary tablet. I purchased the Remix Ultra with the expectation of improving my business productivity.
So far underwhelmed would be the operative word, even though it is a beautiful tablet keyboard combo, very well made. and the price was right.
I think the most disappointing thing is there are so few apps that have the ability to become smaller and actually float on the screen and give you a true multi-tasking enviroment. And some of my favorites I have used for years ...like Quickpic, lose their settings entirely once installed to the Ultra. They work, but only one way ...no setting to adjust anything within the app itself.
I may go back to version 1.5, although I am thinking it will be the same, other than the fact I would have the more traditional Droid settings options, and a widget to tell me that the app I am using does not use phone mode.
I welcome all comments. I really want to love this OS.
Thanks,
BamaPanda
In searching the features of 2.0, I have found that swiping down from the top of the application when in full screen gives the option of the phone sized window ...on some apps.
The Quickpic app. I mentioned above is one that does shrink down to the phone window, and oddly ...when in the phone sized option, the settings return. Others I have tried ...such as the Chrome I am typing in ...do not shrink down.
So it looks like I just could be on a quest for a while to get as many apps as can be found that will do the phone windows trick.
Thanks for following. Hopefully my discovery will help others using 2.0.
So since I was able to discover a feature in ver. 2.0, I wonder if anyone knows how to get into developer mode.
I did find a way to access it through Malwarebytes, but would rather be able to access it directly.
This has links to being able install a micro SD card, and then properly removing the card. There is ability to do an unmount of the card in the current setup for settings, but it is virtually hidden.
@BamaPanda - First of all, thanks so much for your interest and support!
Now, onto your issues. I actually still use my Ultratablet, but less so now because of also testing our Remix OS for PC software. For my basic productivity needs, it's been fine. Can you tell me specifically what apps and issues you're having? Maybe just give me 3 more besides the one you mentioned and I'll see if there may be troubleshooting tips I can give you.
Thanks!

Thanks.
That worked. Now that I know that and the pull down trick to get an app (possibly) into phone window mode, I am sure I can continue to work with the OS.
I apologise for getting a bit anxious regarding the tab and its settings/ shortcuts. I had watched videos about all Remix could do, and I think I just expected there to more info out there.

As far as apps, do you know a particular mail app that will do the phone window? The one loaded with version 2.0 is full screen only. The mail app loaded is the same I have used, but if there is one that does the smaller window, it might be good.
Also right now I am using Polaris to take care of word and excel. The actual `Word` and `Excel` apps from Microsoft ...do they do the phone mode?
Thanks. I do hope attention and updates will continue for the Ultra Tablet, as I can see the big interest for the PC application of the OS maybe overshadowing the tablet support a bit.
Hopefully tablet support will continue, especially since there is a Pro tablet in the works.

@BamaPanda -
1) Email apps/windowed mode - Have you checked whether or not you've enabled windowed mode? Go to 'Settings > Applications > find your app' and then click it for 'App info' and deselect Open in fullscreen mode. See if this helps.
2) Yes, they do. Here's a tip to optimize your experience. After you download Word for example, resize it after you open up a document to it's smallest size possible. Then, restart the app. You can now set it in whatever size you'd like moving forward. You may do this with Excel and PPT as well.
3) Ultratablet will continue to receive updates and support from us. I use mine constantly still.
The tablet/keyboard is starting to grow on me. it is a good bit heavier than my Cube T9, but it should be for it's size.
Looks like it will be my back porch/table top wireless tablet of choice. The keyboard is great, response is perfect. I will use my Cube more for handheld use.
Not as fast as the Cube in many ways, but still a great tablet. Build is top notch!
Still learning, and I will post more things I learn in the hints post I made as I move forward.
Thanks for the help and understanding.

Many seem to be asking, and I figured you might have an idea.

@BamaPanda - We did have Widget support for a couple of versions when Remix OS 2.0 just got launched for Ultratablet. However, we noticed that folks just weren't using Widgets much. So, although Widget supporters were very vocal, there wasn't much actual usage. It also takes resources to maintain Widget support. Thus, the PMs made a decision to take this feature out in later releases. Thanks!

Jason..
I watched an older video on keyboard shortcuts done by you.
Is there a keyboard shortcut to awaken the screen from the keyboard once asleep? I had thought the key directly above the 6 was it, but apparently not.
Thank you.
BamaPanda, not sure if you've already noticed this, but the keyboard button with three horizontal lines, located above the '8' key, opens the menu in some apps. unfortunately it doesn't work with quickpics, which is annoying. (i also use it -- i just have to switch to phone mode to access the menu.)
i forget which apps this button works for -- but if you're ever in that situation give it a try. you could also submit feedback to the app developer because this is something they can fix to make their app usable for tablets. sometimes that actually works!
you should probably wait nougat becoming mainstream and chrome os playstore being widely available on chromebooks.then things will become interesting.
Actually for any of you who are rooted. It is a fix. Just disable com.hanvon.portableink (Floating Windows). Job done. I'm rooted right now, and was wondering if someone who is not could try to disable this. I know you can not do it from the Apps section of the settings. There are however lots of package disabler type apps. If we can find one that will do this without root. We finally have the fix to (IMO) the most annoying thing on this tablet.
Thanks
As far as I know you don't need any package disabler. ADB should be sufficient (c.f. the linked portal article below).

ok.thanks. can you write the magic words to disable istead of uninstall?
That should be
Code:
pm hide <name of package>
for disabling and
Code:
pm unhide <name of package>
for re-enabling.
However, I haven't used these since android 5. I'm not sure whether they're still working or whether they got changed in the meantime (e.g. on android 4.x the commands were enable and disable and on android 4.4.4 the commands were block and unbock).
Be aware that disabled apps will not be visible in the package manager or the app overview of your launcher until you re-enable them.
tried with this result:
[email protected]:/ $ pm hide com.hanvon.portableink
Error: java.lang.SecurityException: Neither user 2000 nor current process has android.permission.MANAGE_USERS.
also:
1|[email protected]:/ $ pm disable com.hanvon.portableink
Error: java.lang.SecurityException: Permission Denial: attempt to change component state from pid=498, uid=2000, package uid=10077
what now?
Well, it looks like they don't work, anymore. I'd use the commands from the article if I were you. You can still get the apps back by making a factory reset.
Sent from my HTC One M9 using XDA Labs
tried uninstall. effect: pen works without that preview window
adb shell
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.hanvon.portableink
thanks for the tipp
Wow, thanks for this. This might be the one tip that lets me keep my yoga book and not return it.
BTW, uninstalling the preview window went well, but I had to reboot my device before the pen would work with apps other than Lenovo note saver. Just a heads up for anyone who tries to disable the preview window, and starts worrying when apps stop taking pen input, and automatically switch on the halo keyboard.
---------- Post added at 06:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:05 PM ----------
Can't take notes with the screen off anymore though. Can others who have uninstalled the preview window confirm this?
had the same, forgot to describe it. What else would make sense to deinstall...
screen off: the original note taker took the notes on screen of, right? That we uninstalled.
maybe that can be replaced by another app
OK, With the upgrade to 7.1.1, I have decided to try without root. But of course the issue with the preview window is still there. In the end I used this app that I had bought in the past.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ospolice.packagedisablerpro&hl=en
You have to delete all accounts then use adb to set the app as owner. After that it can disable without root.
I know disabling com.hanvon.portableink breaks the Screen Off notes but for me that's better than the pop up window every time I switch modes. And I can enable / disable at will like this.
If anyone finds a less roundabout way without root, I would be happy to know it. Or of course a way to stop the pop up without killing the screen off notes.
Otherwise the upgrade is so far very good.
Thanks
Pls Help

sorry i am newbie,
how to delete all accountsthen use adb to set the app as owner
can you pls explain this and what the command to disable this com .hanvon .portableink
Hi,
It has been a long time since I did this. But the instructions are available with the app.
In short, in accounts, you remove all the accounts "Google etc..." Then copy the adb command from the apps instructions. It may sound scary but you can't do any harm. Worst case, you just give up and add the accounts back.
The link I used is no longer valid, so here is an up to date one.

Hopefully their instructions will be clear enough.

I would like to start a foto project and would like to store those photos separately.
I don't want to use another camera app, because stock works best for me.
Would it be possible to have a "switch" to store pictures in a different directory than usual and them not appear in google fotos and syncing to another google account if possible.
I tried setting up a second user on the phone, but it didn't make a trick, because all pictures were still shared and visible in camera app and google fotos.
Maybe hiding moving pictures in hindsight would be a solution, but I don't want much overhead and they should still be backed up
probably will just "archive" the pics inside google fotos, seems like a solution

For the similar thing I setup "Work" profile and use the same apps in both profiles with different google accounts.
All you need to do is install app to setup work profile and clone the needed apps.
How would you do this? I had a work profile installed, but my former employer used some enterprice soft for this

Yes All data (including pics) will be stored in different space and will not be available in Mainland.
