Anyone else have this problem?
I go into dialler, choose number, then choose "call xxxxxxxxx" and then screen goes off whilst the call is being made.
No matter whether phone is flat on the desk or utpo my ear, makes no difference and it wont come back on!!!
Same when receiving calls. I swipe to accept, the screen goes off.
In both instances, the only time the screen comes back is when the other end hang up, then I have to press the power on to get back to the lockscreen.
Very bothersome, any ideas?
Anyone?
Wondering if an app is causing me bother?
As I'm also seeing the phone display the lock screen from time to time for no reason without me touching the power button.

Do you have a screen protector on you nexus? I had to take mine off because i caused the exact problem your having. As soon as I took it off the problem went away. So if anyone gets a screen protector make sure it has a cut out for the prox sensor.
Haven't had this problem.
It's a more or less common problem since phones turn themselves off during calls when held to the ear.
Sometimes the proximity sensor is just wrong calibrated or something like a screen protector prevents it from functioning correctly.
You can recalibrate the sensor with certain apps. If I'm not completely mistaken, there are some in the market.
Mine did it too, I was on a call, the conversation was done, and I wanted to end the call , but the phone stayed black...
as if the proximity sensor was not working.
I had to press the power button to get back to the dialer.
Actually happened to me the first time today like 2 hours ago.
My mate had this problem. Turned out it was just the screen protector fooling the proximity sensor. Job done
CURED.

Crap. Are the good screen protectors leaving holes open for the sensors? My $3 eBay one did not and I'm having issues as well.

What brand of screen protector were you using? I ordered xo. Hope it works fine.
My SGP screen protector only had a cut out for the camera and covered the prox sensor. I had to remove it.
I'm sure once SGP figures it out they will make cut outs for their nexus 4 screen protectors.

X acto knife. Carefully.
Yeah i had the same issue with my SGP. I just out the slot with a scalpel (hey i have them available to me and its better than an exacto knife).
Anyways, i contacted their support to report the issue (not because i wanted my money back or anything). I asked them to let me know when they retooled the protector and then maybe they could send me a replacement. Instead they are sending me another package for free. I swear no one reads/pays attention to things. i don't want more protectors that are not professionally cut, but whatever.
My SGP also has this problem. I sent a email and will see what they say.
I've got the same problem with my cheap eBay protector too. But I also have one on order from Skinomi, and I just emailed them to ask if they have the cut out or not...good news:
"Yes! We have finalized the Skinomi film designs for the LG Nexus 4 and it does indeed include a cutout for the proximity sensor."

Yup, i was panicking that this was going to be a hardware issue but if i peel back the corner of my skin from BestSkinsEver, the issue goes away.
I've emailed them to see what they have to say about it.

This works. I had the same problem and cutting off the upper left corner of the screen protector fixed it. Buy a better quality screen protector next time.
I just got my Nexus 6P a few days ago and I just noticed that I had a problem with the oleophobic coating on the screen.
There are a few areas of the screen that do not appear to be coated properly, since those areas accumulate smudges a lot more quickly than the rest of the phone.
Does anyone else have the same problem? Or is this just an one off incident?
I had this issue with my Nexus 4. I was going to use a screen protector anyway, so I just solved the problem by installing a tempered glass screen protector. If it is a problem for you, I would try to get it replaced under warranty, otherwise a tempered glass screen protector is a great work around for it.
I actually noticed the problem when I tried to apply a tempered glass screen protector because I was having a really difficult time trying to clean the screen. The standard wipe down with the alcohol pad and microfiber cloth wasn't enough to clean the screen.
Based on the shape of the splotchy area, I think someone on the assembly line tried to move the glass before (or during) the coating process. The area that smudges is right where my palms rest when I grip the phone. Also, the right edge and the earpiece area don't appear to be coated entirely either.
I think I'm going to exchange it. Also, the screen protector I got (Supershieldz) doesn't have the cutout for the proximity sensor, so it isn't going to work anyways.
I noted that there were a couple spots towards the edges of the screen that had prominent smudges on them yesterday. I dismissed it as just the location my hands rest but since reading this thread I cleaned the glass thoroughly and ran my finger over the whole (clean) screen and the spots with poor coating come out immediately. That's unfortunate. I'm always afraid to exchange devices for fear of getting a device with a worse problem.
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Oleo...e-what-to-do-if-the-coating-wears-off_id65974
Alcohol will damage the layer, so will other screen wipes as stated above, I use IPA to clean my screens and the layer on my N5 and N6 was removed pretty quickly.
It's highly unlikely that a poorly coated screen would make it past QS anyway as it will be applied in the corning factory before it hit any assembly line.
I doubt they will replace it if you admit to using IPA or other alcohol based substances.
The smudging was a problem even before I used the alcohol wipe. Originally, I thought it was just an ordinary smudge. Except, when I tried to clean it with a lens cloth, the smudge would not come off. My Nexus 6 and iPhone 6 still have their oleophobic coatings intact; I know how take care of them. And from experience, one wipe is unlikely to degrade the oleophobic coating this much.
When the screen is clean, you cannot tell that there is anything wrong with oleophobic coating. There are no tell-tale signs that there is anything wrong with the coating. That is why I probably got through QC.
I found the same problem at the top right corner.

Yeap, that is what it looks like.
One more pic of the same defect.
If I wipe off the oily residue with microfiber cloth, the screen looks perfect. When I rub the screen with oily finger, the oleophobic coating defect shows up as shown in the pictures.
Would this problem actually impact the performance of the phone in any way or is it a question of aesthetics?

It means the screen will get more oily in that area from your fingers and your finger won't drag as well over that area.

The properly coated areas appear to repel oils as originally intended. The problem is that the defective areas will appear perpetually dirty.
It is pretty hard to clean the areas that aren't coated properly. In fact, I think it might be harder to clean than just regular glass.

If you had bought the device direct from Google store then you are never without a phone. The general process is Google sends the replacement phone out to you and then you send your current phone back after receiving the replacement phone. So yeah, you are never without a phone.
EDIT: Just a note: Google supplies all postage. It doesn't cost you anything. They only pre-charge you for the full cost replacement phone but never really take the money. The charge is dismissed and money is returned back into your account after Google receives your old (RMA) phone. Google will explain everything to you anyway once you contact them and request RMA.

At this time, we don't really have any troubleshooting steps for this issue. However, if you are still within your 15 day return period, you can always return this phone and place a new order if you wish.

At this time, there is no replacement process for finger print issue. If you do not wish to return your phone, I would recommend looking into a screen protector for this phone.
How did you guys get Google to exchange it? Maybe I should try calling.

How do I clean my smartphone's screen and should I mind its oleophobic layer?
Yes, you should. It is not recommended to use any alcohol-based solutions when cleaning a capacitive touchscreen, neither is it a good idea to apply common household detergents, even if it's stated that they can be used for computer and / or TV screens. The aggressive compounds in such cleaners can easily wipe off the oleophobic coat and leave your glass “naked”.
Cleaning your mobile device's glass should generally be done with just a soft, cotton rag. In extreme cases, water-based solvents should do the trick – cleaners that are specifically designed for touchscreens can be bought at various outlets, just make sure to check the ingredients, as many manufacturers will feel no remorse in stamping an alcohol-based detergent as mobile-friendly. Also, applying the detergent to the rag, rather than spraying it directly on the screen, is a good idea.
Source : Phonearena
Clearly the spray you use is alcohol based, which i personally would never use.

I just called because of this issue, plus I told them about the top speaker being louder, my backplate being uneven, and the scratches it shipped with. My coating is so bad, it makes the person's phone who supplied those pictures not look so bad. They won't issue me an RMA, only an exchange. So the phone has to be returned within 7 days of them sending the e-mail for the exchange., and I don't even know when the replacement would get here. Says leaves warehouse in 2-3 weeks. Not happy with Google right now.
I can't figure out how to access their chat support. It just keeps looping to help articles when I click it. Mind telling me how?
I just got my new 6P and attached a tempered glass screen protector. I've never had a screen protector interfere with the proximity sensor but as soon as I do something like make a call, the screen goes black and won't power back on with the power button. Sometimes even after the phone call has ended, it'll make the lock and unlock sounds but the screen stays black. Anyone else?

Yeah, I think something is wrong here. It responds to light but as soon as the phone call starts, pitch black, and even when I use the power button to kill the call, I still have to push it one more time for the lock sound, and then again for it to unlock. A master reset might be in order. It did update as soon as I pulled it out of the box. Maybe I shouldn't have tried to restore it and just started fresh.

Tempered Glass Screen Protector
Some of the first ones shipped by vendors don't have proper cutouts.
Here's how the one I purchased fits.
https://goo.gl/photos/zrckMyvwpnyQTU2v7
Hi guys, I have the same issue.
Is there even something you can flash, as I heard that the Nexus 6 had something to do with the proximity sensor too?
Or is the only resolution to get a new screen protector?
Cheers.
So I'm having the same issue with my 6P, but before I remove my beautifully applied screen protector, I'd like to be sure that removing it fixes the issue. There's a Google groups thread that is saying the issue is software-based and that phones without a screen protector that have upgraded to Marshmallow (Nexus 5, Nexus 6) are still having the issues.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/oqh-V37hgDM
So has anyone who has been having this issue successfully resolved it by either getting a new screen protector that has the cutouts or removing the screen protector altogether?
I can confirm that removing the top portion of my screen protector fixed my problem. Prior to cutting the screen protector, ambient display wasn't working either. Both work fine now.
I also have the same issue had to peal off nice tempered glass hope they fix with software.
Thanks Raphielh, appreciate the info. Also, if anyone bought the Supershieldz tempered glass screen protector, they are making new ones with the right cutouts and will be sending them to their customers in early November.

I just installed the same app and my proximity sensor is not moving at all either. I also noticed when I'm on the calls if I move the phone away from my ear, the screen doesn't light up, I have to press power button. My Nexus 5 would just automatically light up when you move it from the ear. So does that mean proximity sensor is dead?

Jonathan,
Where did you buy this TGSP? Can you post a link for others to purchase it?
WOW! I'm glad I found this thread. What a joke! I have never had a screen protector stop a sensor. Oh well, I'm glad I got a good deal on the ones I bought. Now I have some glass screen protectors that are no good. Anyways, thanks for everyone sharing their experience. Thought my phone needed to be sent back. Software issue should fix it. In the mean time I will be shopping for a screen protector that works. SMH
I was OK with the top speaker being louder than the bottom, it still sounded pretty good and was nice and loud....
I'm OK with the screen having, what some people refer to as a "pink" or "green/yellow" hue to it... It's a gorgeous screen and unless I'm looking at it at an angle, it is fine.
Over the weekend I tried 3 different tempered glass screen protectors on it, and none of them would stick to the bottom right corner. I then read where some people had a "dent" or curve on the corners of their glass screen that was only really visible when you looked at a reflection in the glass...... Sure enough, my bottom right corner has a pretty good "distorted" image in the reflection. I can't see it or feel it when looking directly at the screen, but the reflection really shows it has an indention in it.
I spoke to Google and they are exchanging my phone for a new one.... I guess I'll examine it when it comes and chose the one that has the least defects? I love this phone and can live with a few little quirks, so I'm not ready to give up it just yet.
I have the same issue (top right corner), I have already unlocked, rooted the phone and I find it too much trouble to put everything back to stock and request a replacement. I don't know if they would send me a new or used unit. I have already purchased a plastic screen protector (haven't received it yet) and hoping that it would stick to the warped corner better than glass.
How the heck can one figure out there is a bump dent on one of the corners of the screen... Try to purchase good screen protectors may be?
Sent from my Nexus 6P
as he said in OP, just look at a reflection in the screen and see if the reflection is bent. my glass protector doesnt sit down on two corners either. waiting until i get a new one to take this one off

I just got a replacement supershieldz TGSP but I am not going to put it on. I know that since the problem is with the screen it won't fit either. Originally I had requested for a refund but seller thought I am asking for a refund due to it not having proximity sensor cutouts. I am not seeing any point in putting it on and finding out that it has the same issue where one end sticks up and separates from the screen. I am now in search of a plastic protector preferably wet application so that its flexible enough to stay put.

I just wanted to share some updates. I tried a wet application Skinomi on my phone. they must have changed the formula of their plastic as its too soft now. Every time I hit the screen with something (fingernail, keys or anything else) it would leave a permanent dent on the screen protector that would not heal even after many days. I didn't see this behavior back when I had Nexus 5 with Skinomi applied on it.
Anyways, since I mentioned before that I did get a replacement TGSP from Supershieldz and never used it. Tonight I put it on the phone and to my surprise it sticks to the screen fully covering it 100%. Even the dented area is showing sticking unlike before. I don't know what changed but my phone screen is definitely the same.
Just wanted to share it in case if anybody else with dented screen doesn't wanna try a TGSP, give it another shot you might get lucky like me.
Anyone else had this?
If I make a call as soon as I press to dial the screen goes black and I can't reactivate it unless the person in the other end hangs up, so if it goes to voice mail I have to restart my device, if the person hangs up I have to double tap the power button to wake it up but that activates the camera, that's the only way I'm able to do it.
Fully stock and up to date firmware
I don't have the phone, but I read somewhere screen protectors could be causing that. Do you have one on?
It's most likely your glass screen protector does not have the proximity sensor cutout.
I have only just put my screen protector on but the phone has had the problem all day

Like others said, its your screen protector. If you really need a screen protector for the time being, one easy way to bypass it and turn on screen again is double tapping the power button to open the camera and from there you can unlock it and still talk on the phone

Find a screen protector that won't block the sensor. I bought mine from amazon and I read the reviews where many screen protectors blocks the sensor.

Its not down the drain. Contact the seller and get a replacement or refund. I bought a glass one for $6 USD and the seller on ebay refunded me when I explained the issue. If its a problem with the phone you can always RMA it and get a replacement. This has been a problem for me because I can't answer calls with google voice. The proximity sensor is below the top speaker in the lower right hand corner of the speaker.

Find a screen protector that won't block the sensor. I bought mine from amazon and I read the reviews where many screen protectors blocks the sensor.

Is there any way to disable the proximity sensor?
It is odd that this huawei build Nexus has this problem when prior phones haven't had a protector interfere with the proximity sensor.
Any chance it could be Marshmallow given the N5/N6 guys have been having problems all of sudden too & their phones have been out longer without this issue.
UPDATE: Now it appears that it works some of the time & not other times for me.
