Anyone else had this?
If I make a call as soon as I press to dial the screen goes black and I can't reactivate it unless the person in the other end hangs up, so if it goes to voice mail I have to restart my device, if the person hangs up I have to double tap the power button to wake it up but that activates the camera, that's the only way I'm able to do it.
Fully stock and up to date firmware
I don't have the phone, but I read somewhere screen protectors could be causing that. Do you have one on?
It's most likely your glass screen protector does not have the proximity sensor cutout.
I have only just put my screen protector on but the phone has had the problem all day

Like others said, its your screen protector. If you really need a screen protector for the time being, one easy way to bypass it and turn on screen again is double tapping the power button to open the camera and from there you can unlock it and still talk on the phone
£6 down the drain now, but the I took it off and it seems fine, weird how it done it before I even had put the protector on, must if had a but dirt or greasy mark on the display.
Much appreciated folks thanks.

Find a screen protector that won't block the sensor. I bought mine from amazon and I read the reviews where many screen protectors blocks the sensor.

Its not down the drain. Contact the seller and get a replacement or refund. I bought a glass one for $6 USD and the seller on ebay refunded me when I explained the issue. If its a problem with the phone you can always RMA it and get a replacement. This has been a problem for me because I can't answer calls with google voice. The proximity sensor is below the top speaker in the lower right hand corner of the speaker.

Is there any way to disable the proximity sensor?
It is odd that this huawei build Nexus has this problem when prior phones haven't had a protector interfere with the proximity sensor.
Any chance it could be Marshmallow given the N5/N6 guys have been having problems all of sudden too & their phones have been out longer without this issue.
UPDATE: Now it appears that it works some of the time & not other times for me.

Hi Folks,
I'm reading this forum since about 1,5 weeks, as I got my first smartphone then. Unfortunaly I sent it back today, as it got broken yesterday. It has the problem, that the touchscreen doesn't untouch. I made a picture:
I can get rid of this touched area by pressing on it with my fingernail and move it to the bottom.
I think it's from that lether case. Anybody else ever had a problem like that? Probably with another phone type?
Looks like condensation under the screen to me.
Reapply screen protector... That's it..
I thought about water also, but under the microscope we have seen that it wasn't water. I was able to remove it restless until I touched it next.
I removed the screenprotector, but that wasn't a solution.
Unfortonaly I had to send it back today, as I'll get a brandnew one within the first 14 Days after delivery
Wow that's new. Mebe condensation.
Maybe since the touch part is 2 layers, Glass and Plastic screen hovering on top of that, that it got too hot somehow and that the plastic part got stuck to the glass. mebe if you had let it cool or something it woulda unstuck.
Was the phone near any heat or in direct sunlight?\
This looks like a cracked digitizer, a touch sensitive layer above the screen itself. The screen underneath usually seems to be fine, but it doesn't have the touch capabilities anymore. It has a look of spilled liquid and you should be able to see dots of the touch grid, you can't see them normally. It happened to me on my Orbit2. I think whole screen has to be changed...

I thought about something like that too. Has the digitizer a "spazial" filling, so that you have a "soft feeling" when you tab it with the penzil?

I had the phone in my trouser pocket every day. No sunlight or heat. I tried cooling down...no chance. I had a Cassiopeia once and had a waterdamage to it. There I was able to get the water out of the touchpad by having it on my heating for a few days. But it looked not like this here.

Just had the same problem with my Td2. Not impressed. The phone was fine one minute as listening to my music on it, popped it in my pocket went upstairs ang got this blob right in the centre of the screen.
Glad I took the insurance now as this is going to have to get sent back. Not overly impressed as only had the phone for 6 weeks and having a problem with the build.
Just a quick question for those that had this problem. Was the damaged screen visible under all types of light?
I ask this because taking into different rooms in my house and different types of light it seems to disappear, then reappears under other light sources. I will test in the daytime tomorrow but am now starting to wonder exactly how long it has been there...

My "blob" couldn't be seen when I looked straight from above. As on my pictrue I had to look from a angle to see it. Also it was hard to see under bright daylight. Hope that helps.
But I have a question also: You all used the leather bag shipped with the phone? I think the case isn't plain enought inside. I think there is a higher pressure one the display while wearing it in my trouser pocket. Anybody else who can tell more about that?
I've the same problem, at least I think it is the same. Touch still works fine, but it seems like there is some condensation underneath the screen.
I can confirm that it has nothing to do with the screenprotector.
If I put my finger on it, it moves to the sides. Sometimes it seems to be gone, but after a while I notice it again.

too bad it seems like they classify it under 'cracked display' - and according to the user manual it is not covered by warranty.
Probably, but I think it's just an error of HTC. The way they treat their loyal customers is, in my opinion, verry disappointing. It was the same with the problems everyone had with the TytnII.
Today I got my phone back from my provider...the same broken one. In the letter they told my I sent it back too later
Now I'm dissapointed from o2 Germany, cause the customer support told me what to do and I did it.
guys i had the same problem (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519441) and i got a replacement. but i tell you.. this is caused because one time the phone got hit by pressure on the screen and the screen itself kinda felt into the phonecase. check out from the side.. you probably will see that the screen is lowered - then when you use fingers on the touchscreen this blob appears. in my case the screen didnt work anymore as soon the blob appeared... but was able to get it out with some tissue and rubbing.
also i saw some oil liquid under de screen - depending on the light outside.
so.. just take care.. this phone is very sensitive to any pressure on the screen and using it in a trouser pocket is already dangerous!
Anyone else have this problem?
I go into dialler, choose number, then choose "call xxxxxxxxx" and then screen goes off whilst the call is being made.
No matter whether phone is flat on the desk or utpo my ear, makes no difference and it wont come back on!!!
Same when receiving calls. I swipe to accept, the screen goes off.
In both instances, the only time the screen comes back is when the other end hang up, then I have to press the power on to get back to the lockscreen.
Very bothersome, any ideas?
Anyone?
Wondering if an app is causing me bother?
As I'm also seeing the phone display the lock screen from time to time for no reason without me touching the power button.

Do you have a screen protector on you nexus? I had to take mine off because i caused the exact problem your having. As soon as I took it off the problem went away. So if anyone gets a screen protector make sure it has a cut out for the prox sensor.
Haven't had this problem.
It's a more or less common problem since phones turn themselves off during calls when held to the ear.
Sometimes the proximity sensor is just wrong calibrated or something like a screen protector prevents it from functioning correctly.
You can recalibrate the sensor with certain apps. If I'm not completely mistaken, there are some in the market.
Mine did it too, I was on a call, the conversation was done, and I wanted to end the call , but the phone stayed black...
as if the proximity sensor was not working.
I had to press the power button to get back to the dialer.
Actually happened to me the first time today like 2 hours ago.
My mate had this problem. Turned out it was just the screen protector fooling the proximity sensor. Job done

What brand of screen protector were you using? I ordered xo. Hope it works fine.
My SGP screen protector only had a cut out for the camera and covered the prox sensor. I had to remove it.
I'm sure once SGP figures it out they will make cut outs for their nexus 4 screen protectors.

X acto knife. Carefully.
Yeah i had the same issue with my SGP. I just out the slot with a scalpel (hey i have them available to me and its better than an exacto knife).
Anyways, i contacted their support to report the issue (not because i wanted my money back or anything). I asked them to let me know when they retooled the protector and then maybe they could send me a replacement. Instead they are sending me another package for free. I swear no one reads/pays attention to things. i don't want more protectors that are not professionally cut, but whatever.
My SGP also has this problem. I sent a email and will see what they say.
I've got the same problem with my cheap eBay protector too. But I also have one on order from Skinomi, and I just emailed them to ask if they have the cut out or not...good news:
"Yes! We have finalized the Skinomi film designs for the LG Nexus 4 and it does indeed include a cutout for the proximity sensor."

I was wondering this same thing - this screen protector would seem to indicate a positioning of just under the right side of the top speaker, but I can't seem to see anything in product images...
Edit: I don't have one in person (yet!), but in this image, if you super zoom in on the right side of the top speaker, you can almost make out a sort of circular shape in the background of the speaker cutout....I wonder if that could be something??
Not trying to be a smart @$$, but what if you call your voicemail and hold the phone normal and wave your hand slowly right to left across the top until it blacks out. That'll give you a good starting point to find it...
It is below the right side of the speaker as your link indicates. This one "Supershieldz Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Huawei (Google) Nexus 6P - Retail Packaging" (I can't post links yet) on amazon shows a cutout that goes further down the phone, which matches what I see on my phone better.
I bought a tru sheild one off amazon, can't post link.. because it appears its no longer on there.. But my screen goes black as soon as I place a call, and won't come back until the call is over.. which totally sucks.. I have it set up so I can use the power button to end the call... I'm going on vacation, so I have to deal with that until I can buy one that doesn't cover the sensor.
I just got my new 6P and attached a tempered glass screen protector. I've never had a screen protector interfere with the proximity sensor but as soon as I do something like make a call, the screen goes black and won't power back on with the power button. Sometimes even after the phone call has ended, it'll make the lock and unlock sounds but the screen stays black. Anyone else?

You need to get a TGSP with the proximity sensor cutout. In the meantime, you can use the power button to end call (Settings -> Accessibility -> Power button ends call).

Yeah, I think something is wrong here. It responds to light but as soon as the phone call starts, pitch black, and even when I use the power button to kill the call, I still have to push it one more time for the lock sound, and then again for it to unlock. A master reset might be in order. It did update as soon as I pulled it out of the box. Maybe I shouldn't have tried to restore it and just started fresh.

Tempered Glass Screen Protector
Some of the first ones shipped by vendors don't have proper cutouts.
Here's how the one I purchased fits.
https://goo.gl/photos/zrckMyvwpnyQTU2v7
Hi guys, I have the same issue.
Is there even something you can flash, as I heard that the Nexus 6 had something to do with the proximity sensor too?
Or is the only resolution to get a new screen protector?
Cheers.
So I'm having the same issue with my 6P, but before I remove my beautifully applied screen protector, I'd like to be sure that removing it fixes the issue. There's a Google groups thread that is saying the issue is software-based and that phones without a screen protector that have upgraded to Marshmallow (Nexus 5, Nexus 6) are still having the issues.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/oqh-V37hgDM
So has anyone who has been having this issue successfully resolved it by either getting a new screen protector that has the cutouts or removing the screen protector altogether?
I can confirm that removing the top portion of my screen protector fixed my problem. Prior to cutting the screen protector, ambient display wasn't working either. Both work fine now.
I also have the same issue had to peal off nice tempered glass hope they fix with software.
Thanks Raphielh, appreciate the info. Also, if anyone bought the Supershieldz tempered glass screen protector, they are making new ones with the right cutouts and will be sending them to their customers in early November.

I just installed the same app and my proximity sensor is not moving at all either. I also noticed when I'm on the calls if I move the phone away from my ear, the screen doesn't light up, I have to press power button. My Nexus 5 would just automatically light up when you move it from the ear. So does that mean proximity sensor is dead?

Jonathan,
Where did you buy this TGSP? Can you post a link for others to purchase it?
WOW! I'm glad I found this thread. What a joke! I have never had a screen protector stop a sensor. Oh well, I'm glad I got a good deal on the ones I bought. Now I have some glass screen protectors that are no good. Anyways, thanks for everyone sharing their experience. Thought my phone needed to be sent back. Software issue should fix it. In the mean time I will be shopping for a screen protector that works. SMH
For anyone who worries about scratching their shiny new phone and applies a screen protector then take note that in doing so that the motion Gestures will stop working.
I applied a glass screen protector to my phone tonight and although it does not cover the section where the cameras and soli chip are located, after I did the motion Gestures stopped working and the detection for face unlock was hit and miss.
Once I removed the screen protector it all started working again. Not sure if a plastic protector might work better.
If anyone has any ideas or experience please share.
Mind divulging what brand screen protector you used? I grabbed a cheap Pleson 3-Pack on Amazon this week to use until my IntelliGlass one arrives in November. Curious to see if it causes the same issue.

I just put a glass MP-Mall off Amazon on mine. It's got a gap on the top with two horns.
Everybody has been hating on the accuracy of the gestures, but it's been pretty reliable for me.
After I put the screen protector on I'm pretty sure it affected it. It doesn't respond as well, but then I question whether I waved correctly or not. [emoji2357].

The one I bought from Amazon is branded OMOTION. Definitely the protector because I removed it last night and motion sense started to work again. I put on another this morning and it's stopped working. I have ordered another brand from Amazon to test.
If anyone finds one which works please let me know.
Got my Pixel 4 a few hours ago. I installed a PLESON tempered glass screen protector before I even turned the thing on. It does not cover the entirety of the glass, as expected, because of the curved edges.
Face Unlock works well, and reaching for the phone is detected properly when the ambient display is on. The only thing I've found to not work 100% reliably so far are the gestures for skipping music tracks. First of all, the app has to support it. So the gestures straight up don't work in Shuttle Music Player (my personal favorite) but will work with Google Play Music. Moving your hand from left to right is supposed to skip to the next song while the reverse motion is supposed to restart the song and/or go back to the previous song. I've found that when doing these gestures, only the right to left motion (restarting / going to the previous song) works, whereas skipping the track does not. Additionally, you can see towards the top of the screen, underneath the earpiece, that a bar will light up and it follows the movement of your hand.
So the PLESON screen protector will work for now, but I have an Intelliglass on the way, which should hopefully perform properly.
I have not heard of Intelliglass protectors before, just googled and found that and also intelliarmour. Both seem to cover the whole phone so I assume for the Pixel 4 it will also cover the soli chip. Will be interesting to hear how you get on. I suspect it may stop it working. I have found my protector overlaps the screen and covers about 3mm of the notch, I assume that is what is causing the motion sense to not work. With no protector it works fine.

Sorry, gonna trim this a bit. But only for one reason and that's the screen protector debate. I always used those things until I didn't. I would drop the phone and they would shatter and I was .. omg thank goodness for the screen protector. And then I thought hmm.. let me see. Did a little research and the reviews were mixed. Until I dropped the device without one and .. nothing. No cracks no glass break no nothin'. I never got another one and I've never broken a screen with a drop either. Now don't jinx me lol but I don't think they do a thing. I did get a fabric case for my P3 and 3a and they work well with minor obstructions.
I've not ordered the $40 fabric for the P4 yet but I probably will at some point. I like to get the feel of the device before I do that and I try to be uber careful until that time. But just a few quick thoughts that don't mean much other than my own.

Yeah, I've considered rocking my phone without a protector in the past, especially because I'm usually very careful with my phones, but there have been times where my phone my phone was knocked out of my hand by some idiot or something and I just like the added protection (if there is any). At the very least when I go to sell the phone the original screen is in nearly pristine condition.
As far as cases go, I really enjoyed the Spigen Thin Fit I had on my G7 so I'll be picking one of those up as soon as it's released in white. In the mean time, I snagged a Spigen Liquid Crystal just for basic protection. Although, the idea of rocking it naked is tempting. It feels very nice in my hands.
I also have the OMOTON brand from Amazon and the face unlock works ok, however the gestures to skip songs in Spotify rarely work. I will try to remove the protector later and see if that for sure is the issue.
I discovered that if I do the gestures with a phone off to the side it's not very repeatable but when I have the phone directly in front of me it works most of the time with the screen protector still on. I am thinking the screen protector prevents it from working off to the side as well. My wife just got a pixel 4XL as well and it works off to the side.
it would be nice to have some protection on the rear square that the camera's sit behind...i'm not sure how it would affect the camera performance, but once you get a little scratch on that surface, you'll have a camera that struggles to pull focus on close objects.. thoughts?
Motion Sense hardly works without a screen protector. Turn it off to save the paltry battery life, and protect your screen
