i wouldn't count on root any time soon for it. they barely rooted last years turbo.
Hell no

Thinking about it. Once I switch to the new plans I won't really have a need for root. The slightly smaller size and better battery life may be worth it. Just let worried about updates.

I'm considering it because I might receive one as compensation for a debt (long story, lol). I'm also looking at the Case-Mate Tough Case (black) for it. I like the fact that the Maxx 2 doesn't have a Verizon logo on the front and the back can be switched out for a Moto X Play cover. I know the bootloader situation will take time (6-12 months) but I'm in no hurry because I have my trusty Skyrocket running smoothly on Tipsy OS LP 5.1.1 for the time being.

I just picked one up yesterday. I was trying to unload an Moto X 2013 on swappa and no one was biting. This was just my backup phone. Verizon trade in offered me $300 for it by purchasing the Maxx 2. I took it. Now I have a newer backup phone and I got twice what I was trying to sell my Moto X for. Sounds good to me. So far it a very nice mid ranger. I like the feel in the hand. It's performing just fine. Haven't had it long enough to gauge battery life yet but no doubt it will be better than my Galaxy S6.
Also noticed it's StageFright vulnerable out the box. No updates available yet. Hope Motorola doesn't decide not to update this phone like it decided on with the 2014 Moto X.
There's an option in Dev settings that says Allow OEM Unlocking Allow the bootloader to be unlocked. Don't know if that would allow for root soon on this phone.
Sent from my XT1565 using Tapatalk
That setting option sounds promising. Maybe this will catch the attention of the devs and help spur development of this phone.

Hello,
Can you please confirm that it would work on other networks including international networks out of the box?
I am considering this and 300$ trade in is very tempting, but I am concerned about it being able to support other networks.
Thanks in advance

Thank you for testing this out. So this phone is similar to all the other Verizon LTE phones; LTE works on band 4 for both AT&T and T-Mobile. Not widely used yet, but refarmed in certain areas.
2G(EDGE) and 3G shouldn't been an issue. Even HSPA+ might work.
Here are the frequencies for MAXX 2.
XT1565: VZW
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
UMTS/HSPA+ (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz)
CDMA (850, 1900 MHz)
4G LTE (2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 13, 20)
AT&T
3G : GSM 1900, 850
4G : 2, 4, 17
T-Mobile
3G : 1900, 1700/2100
4G : 2, 4, 12
so no 4g band 3 1800Mhz, right?

According to the Motorola product page:
Bands (by model)
XT1565: VZW
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
UMTS/HSPA+ (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz)
CDMA (850, 1900 MHz)
4G LTE (2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 13, 20)
So it should have LTE Band 3/7 support for international use.

So the story goes like this...
I had a Nexus 5 but sold it because I didn't like the big size. So I then went to a Moto X XT1058 and wanted to root/unlock for tethering etc. Then I realized I couldn't do that so I sold that for the Developer Edition XT1053. Now I've unlocked and rooted on 4.4.2 stock rom.
Only problem is that with my XT 1053 doesn't have any LTE and it only shows 4G and the speeds reflect it. Now I do know the XT1053 is somewhat a t-mobile model more so then the 1058 and it might be missing some LTE bands but according to what I've read the band that's missing isn't really used in the US?
Well I'm in Vermont and I had LTE on the XT1058 version but not with the XT1053 :/
Is Vermont the only place that the missing band effects?
I even did more things to test this... I got a new sim card and made sure LTE was provisioned on the account, I did an IMEI change to have my plan show I'm using the XT1058 AT&T version because I've heard if AT&T doesn't recognize the imei then they limit you at HSDPA.
Can I mod something or flash something to get LTE?! I love the developer edtion but I want to have my cake and eat it too.
TL;DR I dont get LTE on my XT1053 even though other people do from what I've read. Even after new roms and IMEI changes.

Right I believe so, I have flashed many other roms. Even CM11, Gummyrom, Liquid smooth, etc
All in hopes that some would enable the LTE but none did, some roms showed H+ but still about the same speeds. One rom even locked me at 3G only.
Everywhere I've read people say that the XT1053 will work fine on AT&T LTE but am I the only person that is effected?
I wish their was a site that showed the lte bands that are in use per state/area so i can compare.

I am getting AT&T LTE on my TMO/XT1053 in Philadelphia. The notification bar icon is different than the one used on the AT&T Moto X. I think AT&T wanted to make it more obvious.

Not sure how to get APN on this
tapped out via XT1053 DE
I believe it has to do with the frequency used in the area. Band and freq are both used. Even though it says 850, 1700, or 1900. There is a band width of 15MHz blocks.
I feel this is better representation of the freq and bands used. According to this Band 5 on Freq 850
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellular_frequencies
aswell as this from ATT which states they use the 1900 and 850
http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=14003
Tmobile moto x don't have band 5. Vermont is hilly (I am from West Virginia, I consider the Appalachian mountains hills lol). ATT may use band 5 there because it will have better penetration against the hills.

Thanks for the screen shots, mine are the same so we know its not the apn settings as an issue.
Also @ southern87 I'm worried that may be the case that in VT AT&T uses LTE on band 5 and I'm only stuck on "3.5G" speeds that are about 5down and 2up on a good day.
Anyone know if this is a hardware limitation or a software hack we can change like the nexus 4 lte band issue.

I had this same issue in VT on my XT1053 back in December. I consulted with AT&T, who told me they are using Band 5 in VT for LTE. I then consulted with Motorola via G+, who told me that the XT1053 does not and never will support Band 5 LTE. I can't post a link because I don't post on XDA enough. Do a G+ search for "Moto X Band 5 LTE" and see my post on December 30, 2013. Matt Jones from Motorola confirmed the lack of Band 5 in the comments.
I switched to the XT1058.

Dang thats the same problem I have. 4down and 2up isn't really good when my Nexus 5 had I think 15down and 6up but it was just to big for my hands.
Thanks for letting me know. Its such a shame, I actually have both the XT1058 and XT1053 in front of me but opted for the XT1053 for the bootloader unlockability/tethering etc.
I guess my only hope is that down the road they (AT&T) could use another LTE band in VT and then it would solve the problem in a different way.
Is thier any indication that AT&T would move off the band 5 to use another band for a better reason?

AFAIK AT&T just started using LTE Band 5 in USA recently, so I think it is not likely they would abandon it.
FWIW I use 1053 on GoPhone in NYC and it almost always shows 4G LTE.
Is it possible to flash NON-HLOS.img (radio image) from the AT&T flash files and enable the other bands on the XT1053, or is there an actual hardware limitation? Usually, the amplifiers are tuned, but you might be able to get something, unless the baseband throws a hissy fit. You don't need 1700MHz 2G as that's only for T-Mobile.
Legally, Moto would have to re-certify the XT1053 for band 5 LTE, which is why it'll never officially support it.
Are you using the exact same SIM you were using for the Nexus 5 that worked with LTE? I thought you have to have something provisioned for LTE to be working in the first place.
My wife and I both have 1053's that work with LTE on AT&T. We've both used it with LTE successfully in Chicago +suburbs, Austin, Houston, and Dallas.
The hardware is different between the xt1053 and xt1058, no amount of flashing will add the band you require to get LTE in your area.
Hello,
I recently bought the phone off ebay. It stated that this phone has the Band 4, 1700 and 2100 frequency. When I look at other sites with the same note 4 N910C model, it stated that the model does not support the 1700 mhz but only the 2100.
The seller gave me the samsung website and below stated that this phone supports B4 (AWS). Is that the same as 1700 and 2100 that T-mobile uses?
Can anyone confirm that the phone will work with my T-mobile network at 3g, 4g, or 4g LTE? I am in the USA and zip code 91746 if that matters. thanx!

I guess you don't have the phone yet, but you may need to actually test it yourself. So far I have not seen any successful 910c units reported to get 4G in the US. That does not mean that you will be unable but the info is just not there(correct me if wrong).
Apparently both bands are needed-one band for out and another for inbound signal.
Good luck, I have been watching this as well.
I'm using mine in TMO Puerto Rico
I'm using my N910c in T-Mobile Puerto Rico and I get LTE. The only issue I have is a weak voice signal in places where I used to have better coverage. But I don't have problems with the data at all, at least as of now. Maybe in Puerto Rico LTE for Tmo is configured differently, but my LTE is working.
One thing I can tell you is that the package doesn't lists 1700 band in LTE AWS. But mine works ok on Tmo PR's network at least.
according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks#Americas
tmobile uses many blocks of 1700, depending on regions, but only on 1900 and 1700 mhz , and AWS is the one wrongly called 1700/2100 (1710 to 1755 uplink, and from 2110 to 2155 MHz downlink)
so in theory it has everything you need for tmobile in any area, maybe you need an update , check that no one messed with flashing your radio to some other model to make it work on their area
Hi i have 910C i can get a 4G signal i live in nyc my speeds are about 17 over 20 averagely and at best 30 over 30 hope that helps .
From what I can tell, you will probably be able to use it, but you said N910C, but linked us to an N910U. Either way I'll post my findings for both.
T-Mobile's bands are 2, 4, 5, and 12.
N910U's bands are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 28.
N910C's bands are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 17, and 20.
I'm new to this stuff, but this tells me that either one will mostly support T-Mobile. I would use an app to see which band you're currently utilizing on your phone, and pray that it isn't 12, cuz neither one will work.
Bonus: From what I can tell, the N910C will work completely on AT&T. :good:

Fixed the 4g issue!
I have the N919c from UAE and I got it to work on 4g for tmobile by calling SUPPORT.
When we use auto assign to 4g network through the data settings it will not automatically pick the correct Tmobile APNs. The support rep told me what to type line by line to get it perfect and I'm on 4g as I type this. You have to call them to get the correct values for your region but we DEFINITELY CAN GET 4G IN THE USA! I'm in Tampa Bay Florida with 4g in the ghetto, lol

Everything is good. coming from the nexus 4, i feel i have more control in my device (excluding the rooting and unlocking situation), due to microsd card, removable battery, and usb otg. Performance-wise, I think this phone will last me a very long time (if not probably my last phone upgrade). I don't game much so as long as apps, video and music playback, and web browsing is fast. When the battery falls below standard, i can easily just buy a new one from a reputable third party.
I just notice some "build quality" issue tho. Like the metal shiny sides r very easily scratched, and the top left corner of the screen near the led, you are able to move it if you push it in (made a thread about this but it seem to be normal). My note 4 had a defect, which was the the proximity sensor isn't working, so i sent the device back and i'm waiting for a new one or waiting to be repaired.

I knew all the past trouble with VZW, global, CDMA and roaming.
But with the upcoming unlocked era, the radio bands from the specs and a bit of homework, all signs pointed to this working.
Worst case scenario would have been tethering it off my Nexus 5 anyway.
So I ordered a nanoSIM from my company provider, Netcom.
I popped it in and got the following:

Ugh, C'mon SIM Card is not from Verizon ? Than sounds pretty locked to me.
I tried a few more times rebooting in Global, CDMA, and GSM modes to be sure.
No connection, no networks found, Voice data blocked, no service.
OK, time to call Verizon. Let's just say their organization doesn't handle call transfers well when you don't have a verizon account.
The low level tech support told me the Droid Turbo is unlocked from the box, they couldnt lock any of their 4G phones if they wanted.
But, when I mentioned the "SIM Card is not from Verizon" he transferred me to Motorola.
Motorola rep insisted that message indicated a locked status, ans referred me back to Verizon.
Next level insisted to me that its not locked and even that DT doesnt use a nanoSIM, which I eventually convinced her contrary to their latest reference material nanoSIMs aren't just iPhone anymore.
After another 45min of bouncing around their phone systems, and explaining I just want to use a local SIM in Europe, I finally got up to top level tech Global support.
Now this guy was actually helpful.after establishing I knew my way around android and understood GSM vs CDMA etc, we determined the message might be remnants of a lock program. Since I was blocked from even viewing any mobile networks, he had me manually enter the APN for Netcom here and restart. It was then I got to tell him about the wonderful DT bug of ART runtime and the "Android is upgrading" optimization on EVERY restart. He took note of that. He got my email and I send him screenshots of the locked/blocked notifications to send to his Motorola liaison.
Reboot, still nothing, same errors. Out of desperation, we rebooted one more time in desperation.
Agonizing wait, then BOOM! signal! NOt sure if it was the wait, or number of reboots but it finally took, even with the non-Verizon SIM notification. Edge only in my house , but that normal, but I went for a ride around the block and got several channels of Edge, GPRS, HPSA and a sniff of HPSA+!!. I will test 4G LTE when I drive though a coverage area tomorrow. It also sees the other provider here, Telenor.
So we have a true global phone, with hiccups. Do your homework with frequency bands, and be patient with SIMS, registration, reboots.
Awesome! Now talk to that same Motorola tech about getting your bootloader unlocked!!!!

This was not a high level Moto Support guy, I did ask about bootloaders while i had him on the line, he said "Yeah if its the Developer Editions go to the Moto website and find the unlock tool", so usual line.
I did a drive though town today and the DT did not connect to 4G in Global or GSM modes, so I gotta try a few more things.
But it did hold a pretty good HPSA+ around the town and even connected to UMTS way out on the island I work on.
So confirmed VZW Droid Turbo connection to GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HPSA, and HPSA+ in Europe so far.
Droid Turbo working Well @ Malaysia too!

in Italy Droid Turbo is confirmed that works on LTE too.
the phone is globaly unlocked
if in ur country there are operators that use the LTE bands from turbo,u will get 4g lte without problems.
Now let's unlock additional LTE bands!
Well, with Moto Maxx theoretically possible since we have unlockable bootloader and root. So, not yet possible on Droid Turbo (locked bootloader, no root yet).
I messed with it last weekend for a couple of hours on one of my Moto Maxx phones, then had to put it on hold. During the work week, I can't devote time to it. Gonna take another stab at it this weekend.

band 20
with this band unlocked ,it will be the perfect smartphone.
but i guess it s quite near impossible.
My provider Netcom has LTE bands 3,7,20
Droid Turbo specs claim LTE bands 2,3,4,7,13
So we have a match for 3 (2600MHz) & 7 (1800MHz)
For some reason is hasn't connected automatically yet.
Are you running Global mode or LTE/GSM/UMTS mode in Italy?
I have requested the VZW tech to request Moto to unlock me so I can get him network stats, logcats etc.
Its a long shot, but worth it. Stay tuned.

Turbo in Ireland
Got my turbo from best buy early November, brought it to Ireland the next day. On the same day i got a načo sim from my provider (3). Swapped Verizon sim for my new one, turned the phone on and apart from "sim card not from Verizon" notification everything works perfectly, 3g,hspa+,Lte, you name it, it works. No tinkering or messing around with settings required, apart from setting your access point obviously.

Dammit I got the same bands and its not connecting to LTE,
I have been on the phone with Netcom, Motorola, even Verizon and nobody can figure it out.
The tech support people at Moto talked me into doing a factory reset. I should have known better.
Now I cant connect to any network. 2G, 3G, or 4G.
Need ideas.....

I thought the LTE bands from every Moto phone is bound to hardware limitations and cannot be unlocked software-wise?
For the Sony z1c you can unlock all LTE bands: http://forum.xda-developers.com/cro...ad-progress-please-leave-im-updating-t2871269
Or did you find a way how to unlock other LTE bands on Moto phones? Cause we (the Moto X owners) would love to unlock all LTE bands!

This is as far as I've gotten. But I'm trying to not to screw up my phone.
This is how far I've gotten.
I'm not sure what to choose. Some people say in the threads that in this program "WCDMA" category also applies LTE bands, while others say you need to do something else. Conflicting info. I'm trying to read everything again to see which is correct.
Since there's no band 12, I think I need a secondary program mentioned in those threads.

OK, using this guide and the numbers from the NV calculator, I enabled all the LTE bands I wanted.

Incase anyone is wondering this value will "theoretically" enable band 12 and the other ones listed below on the OPO
LTE:Band 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 19, 20, 21

I confirmed this number.
So, I changed the value and after reboot it kept the new value.
As the Moto Maxx was being tested to be the Nexus 6 as late as mid-August, it has the same capabilities of the Nexus 6 (including Qi wireless charging, which is VERY unusual on a Moto phone). Thus it can also handle LTE band 12 just like the Moto Maxx, not that it matters. It was LTE band 5 I was more worried about. When this phone with this same FCC ID number went through the FCC it had LTE band 5 enabled, but when sold in Puerto Rico (U.S. territory) with this same FCC ID number, LTE band 5 was no longer present but LTE band 3 was enabled.
Now they are all enabled.

QPST and mzTool seem to be only for enabling 2G/3G bands.
You need QXDM to edit/enable LTE bands. I wasted a lot of time on QPST and mzTool. I already have all the GSM/HSPA bands I need. I wanted more LTE bands. Once I figured out what each was good for, then I concentrated on QXDM, and the NV/LTE browser with the NV calculator app. Somone else had already calculated the number, but I double checked it. Then I "wrote" it. When I rebooted and checked the number again, the edited value was still there.
(You do need QPST installed to use QXDM, so you do need both programs.)
The hardest part was the steps to get the COM ports to show up in QPST and QXDM. Last weekend I spent a couple of hours and never could get it to connect. Today, I spend like 6 hours on it, and was successful.
The only issue is all I have to guage my success right now is the NV calculator numbers. I went out driving around and the only AT&T bands I could find within a 3 mile radius were bands 2 and 17, which I already had. LTE band 5 may not even be in use in the Atlanta metro area. I don't know.
Some phones have hidden service menus (accessed via dialer codes) that will display all the bands you are capable of receiving, but the Moto menu I've accessed does not seem to have that option.
thanks a lot for the good instructions!
You could even write a full tutorial now especially as you mentioned it took you 6hours to get the phone actually connected to the PC.
Now its all a matter of whether the antennas / mboards / chips really are different or if there are hardware limitations for the LTE bands...

Kudos to you, sir -- for being smart enough to buy the "dev" version of the Droid Turbo XT1254 to replace your broken XT1254 to run on Verizon.
The dev version being the one without the locked-down bootloader, the XT1250. Bootloader easily unlockable from Motorola, for free.
I know I've tried to spread the word... and I know many people have bought the XT1250 to run on Verizon with a Verizon SIM card -- but yours is the first hand report of actually replacing your XT1254 with an XT1250 that I've read here on XDA. There may be others, but your story caught my eye.
Also, I didn't know jet.com (a wholesale site, much like Costco, Sam's Club) had new ones for sale. Until now people were either buying 2nd hand XT1250 on eBay. For "new", they were having to go through the U.S. regional CDMA/LTE carriers who were selling them -- sometimes at outrageous prices.
So, for those of you who took the recent OTA and permanently locked your boootloaders -- sell your borked phone on Swappa and here's the dev replacement.
Here's the jet.com listing for the new XT1250. It's the U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250 -- has CDMA and Verizon's LTE bands. Same FCC ID, same device as the XT1254. Yeah, Verizon LIED that the XT1254 was "exclusive" in any way. Wasn't even exclusive to them in the U.S.
(At least a dozen regional CDMA/LTE carriers sold this XT1250 U.S. Moto Maxx, with the same FCC ID, same radio bands, same hardware. It's the EXACT SAME Quark Verizon sold, just under a different model name.)

Thanks @ChazzMatt - I probably would not have known the xt1250 existed without the info. you have posted in the past. As this is my 3rd quark, I didn't want another refurb which could have the lastest firmware which locked down the susnhine exploit or risk asurion being out of 1254 stock and getting a Turbo 2.
Also, although the price you stated is correct, if you create a jet.com account, your first purchase you make you get 30% off so price I paid with free shipping was $230, only $55 more than the asurion deductible and sunshine.
It was actually only 15% off - total price 245.
I had it confused with something else I purchased recently
My employer paid the $199 upgrade fee for my XT1254 when my DROID Mini took a "hard hit" on the floor and killed the screen. Thankfully,
I've been thinking about picking up a XT1250 for the wife though, so, thanks for the info!

Just went back to the link on jet.com and it's says now it's "currently unavailable". WOW. Sold out fast. Maybe they'll get some more in! They were in stock just two days ago.
Well, they are still available on Amazon.com. One new black one left, and several red ones. Plus some "used" ones from other sellers.
Verizon just dropped the price on XT1254 to $200 NIB, so I picked one up to play with. It came with 44 installed, so unlocking the boot loader was trivial.

After the disappointing new lineup, maybe I just buy another one for replacement or for give as a gift, this is a solid buy.
I get that this is a Verizon exclusive at launch (July 28th), and that an "unlocked" version of the Z (not the Z Force) will be available sometime in September, but really, what's the difference between the two? Verizon does NOT carrier/SIM lock phones:
https://www.verizon.com/about/responsibility/product/device-unlocking-policy
Which implies that I can buy a Verizon Moto Z Force at full price and put my AT&T sim card in it. Other than seeing a Verizon logo at startup, all should be fine.
What am I missing?
You're missing that the LTE may never function exactly right. It may or it may not, depending on your area. The bands are not all shared. Also there will be almost no hope of ever unlocking the bootloader due to Verizon restrictions. And then there is the stupid Verizon logos all over the phone to deal with lol
I swear I read on twitter that a member of the media that got a review unit said it was working with her AT&T sim in it

Yea? How's that droid turbo 2 bootloader coming along? You wrote that post from a 2 year old phone with an unlocked bootloader lol. Please direct me to any recent Verizon phone with a now unlocked bootloader. Also which parts of my post were inaccurate? Was it the part where I said there was "almost" no hope of the bootloader being unlocked? Was it that? Or what about the LTE bands being different? The one shocking thing about this device is that it appears there isn't even one single Verizon logo on the phone except for the "droid" logo on the camera. At least it doesn't say Verizon...
2 years is a little bit of an exaggeration, but point taken

Droid Turbo 2 was released in October 2015. It is 10 months old. I'd probably be pretty happy with having a phone get bootloader unlocked only 10 months in.
However, I am currently on a Verizon Galaxy S5 and it did actually take nearly 2 years to get a bootloader unlock with that phone. My Verizon Galaxy S3 before it also got a bootloader unlock, but it also took a good while. And I've had other phones that I'm pretty sure were never unlocked. Though I am awaiting my pre-ordered Moto Z Force Droid, I agree with you that the bootloader being unlocked during the lifetime of the phone is probably not too likely. Don't get your hopes too high, folks.

He has a droid turbo 1 which is 2 years old, which is what I was referring to. The droid turbo 2 is 10 months old.
Verizon sucks in the bootloader unlock department. That's why I bought my Moto X Pure the day it launched. Back in the day, up to the S4, we had some good developers that were able to crack the bootloaders shortly after a new phone released. You can still get a HTC phone and mail it off to be S-Off (did that with an M9 and plan to if I ever come across a good deal on a 10).
I'll keep creeping the forums for the Z/Z Force. If it can be unlocked I'll grab one. If not I guess I'll have to get a HTC 10 or a Saygus V2 if they ever actually ship them.

I would bet a non-Verizon version (non-"Droid") of the Moto Z Force will also be available. Of course Motorola and Verizon are not going to tout that during the prime selling season for the "exclusive" Droid version.
Let's get back to what he asked...
AT&T uses these bands:
2, 4, 5, 17
The Moto Z Droid has these bands:
B1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 13
The Moto Z Force DROID has these bands:
B2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 13
It might work but 4G LTE will have problems, 4G will be fine I think, because it only uses bands 5 & 2

Which is why in 2014 I bought the Moto XT1225 the international, unlocked version of the Droid Turbo XT1254. LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 17 and more HSPA bands than the XT1254, with no useless CDMA bands. I ended up buying THREE of them and run on AT&T. In Atlanta, LTE band 17 is used a LOT.
_______
Of the Quarks, the XT1225 and XT1254/XT1250 all share LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 7.
The XT1225 additionally has LTE band 5 and 17 (more bands used by AT&T).

Based on past experience, there are no exclusives anymore. Especially Motorola/Verizon. Trust me on this. The XT1254 Droid Turbo (Quark) was not even exclusive to Verizon in the U.S. Same exact device, same exact radio bands, same exact FCC ID was sold by at least a dozen U.S. regional CDMA/LTE carriers (not MVNOs, actual carriers with their own towers and spectrum) as the XT1250 U.S. Moto Maxx. Easily unlocked bootloader, runs on Verizon just fine with a Verizon SIM card, just like a non-Verizon Moto Nexus 6.
Internationally then the same device but with different radio bands was sold as the XT1225 Moto Turbo/Moto Maxx.
The Moto Z Force will appear somewhere, I predict.

I get that this is a Verizon exclusive at launch (July 28th), and that an "unlocked" version of the Z (not the Z Force) will be available sometime in September, but really, what's the difference between the two? Verizon does NOT carrier/SIM lock phones
Which implies that I can buy a Verizon Moto Z Force at full price and put my AT&T sim card in it. Other than seeing a Verizon logo at startup, all should be fine.
What am I missing?

I am a bestbuy mobile employee with access to both devices and multiple carriers sim cards, both of the moto z's pulled lte on everyone we tried but sprint(device was not in there imei/meid database to activate) but vzw,t-mobile,att,net 10, metropcs, crickett, and simple mobile all activated and worked with LTE/3g
my comments are my personal opinion and should no way be confused as direct fact on behalf of bestbuy

In the past I have owned various Verizon specific phones such as the Droid Razr and Droid Maxx. None of them have ever functioned correctly on LTE with AT&T here in Sacramento, California. I was shocked to find that this Moto Z works perfectly on LTE in my area. I used an app to see which LTE bands were being used and the phone simply jumped to another LTE band when I took the sim out of my Nexus 6p and regained full service (on a different band than it was using in the Nexus) and even pulled a faster speedtest than the Nexus.
Everything working great so far. This may not be your experience in your area however and I may travel somewhere that I normally get full service and find that there is none. Good luck.
I got my droid z force (from Verizon) 2 days ago. I was using an European sim card which connected in roaming to AT&T 4G LTE band with no problems. Also i can confirm that the phone works with European 4G bands well.

You're missing that the LTE may never function exactly right. It may or it may not, depending on your area. The bands are not all shared. Also there will be almost no hope of ever unlocking the bootloader due to Verizon restrictions. And then there is the stupid Verizon logos all over the phone to deal with lol

AT&T LTE is about evenly split between B4 and B17. If you live in an area where AT&T uses band 4 for LTE, then yes, the Verizon Moto Z will get LTE, but if you live in an area where they use band 17 then it won't. Simple as that. That's why some people are saying LTE is working for them and some are saying it's not. It depends on where you live. I personally wouldn't buy one of these for use on AT&T knowing that it's only going to get LTE in about half of AT&T's LTE coverage area.
Do I need to activate it with a Verizon sim to make it work, or can I insert any sim card (from supported network bands) to have it work as a global phone?

You can just insert your sim card. I won a Z Force, and tossed my TMo sim card in it. During setup it says it won't work, but I didn't even have to set up APN and it works fine. Sends and receives MMS, goes online on data, etc
