Will not instal OTA software update Plus MTP problem - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
Just bought an unlocked Sprint S4
Two problems
The lollipop OTA update aborts with message: "/system/media/BST_bootsamsung.qmg" has unexpected contents.
E: Error in /cache/update.zip (status 7) Installation aborted.
Secondly when connecting the S4 to a PC I get message from PC saying: 'the last usb device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it'
I've installed kies no help there.
searched for remedies tried developer options etc on the phone all to no avail.
cannot get windows to recognise the phone as mtp device
when I plug it in I get no notifications on the phone
it does show its charging
running windows 10

Sorted the usb problem, used the direct computer usb port and it was recognised, presumably not enough power from hub ports.
Can anyone help with the failure to update to lollipop?

Got the IMEI fixed but the screen goes black now when I try to make a call. Any ideas of how to fix? I was thinking about tying to flash the phone with Odin again with the same 4.2.2 stock rom. The microphone also doesn't work during the call.

Why won't Mobile Odin flash Android 5.0.1 on my S4 GT-I9505?

I have a Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 that I purchased online. It turns out that the Android firmware (4.4.2) does not match the phone's CSC code. I have been trying to flash a stock ROM for Android 5.0.1 that *does* match the phone's CSC code, but Mobile Odin won't proceed. My phone is properly rooted, and Mobile Odin starts correctly, but when I try to open the tar.MD5 file, it says "Partition could not be found in file." It did let me wipe the phone, and the phone properly booted up again in 4.4.2. What can I do to make this work?
Would it help to flash an Android 4.4.2 that matches the phone's CSC? Is there something else I can try? I'm fairly new at this kind of hacking, but I'm learning quickly! Here are my phone's details:
Android version: 4.4.2
Product Code: GT-I9505ZKAXSG
Original CSC Code: XSG
Firmware CSC: XSG
PDA Version: I9505XXUGNG2
Bootloader Version: I9505XXUGNG2
Baseband: I9505XXUGNG2
CSC Version: I9505OJVFNF1
Kernel Version: 3.4.0-2091210 [email protected] #1 32-bit
Thanks for any help you can offer. Oh, also, just to make clear, I cannot connect this phone to a desktop with a USB cord -- I have tried every possible variety of driver install, and #$%&* Windows will not recognize the phone.
Let's verify your phone model. Enter download mode (power, volume down, and the home button) and read off the device's model number at the top left of the screen. As to the driver issue, you really want to get that resolved. Download the driver from here and install it.
If you do not want your phone to be bricked, I suggest you stay away from Mobile Odin.
Use FlashFire instead. Same principe, only newer.

Thanks for your help. The phone model listed in download mode is GT-I9505.
I tried the driver that you linked to, but it didn't work--I suspect when my phone once fell off a table while plugged into the charger, the phone connection got damaged. I can charge the battery just fine, but connecting to a computer through the cord is no longer possible. However, I have been successfully transferring stock ROM files onto the phone with the Software Data Cable app.
Then replace the connector. That board is separate from the motherboard and shouldn't be too expensive.

It sounds like there was either an issue when flashing or a problem with the firmware you have used.
I would advise using Smart Switch on your computer to force another update instead of using ODIN.
Type *#06# and make a note of your serial number then turn off the device.
Open Smart Switch on your PC (Download Here if you don't have it) then in smart switch press MORE then select 'Emergency Software Recivery and Initialization'
Put the phone into Download Mode and connect to PC and wait for drivers to install (you may get a message saying it is incompatible, ignore it).
Click on the Device Initialization tab.
Enter your device model 'SM-G935F' and press OK. Then type in your devices Serial then press OK.
Now follow all steps until device is flashed. This could fix the issue.

You can go to download mode to check your exact hardware model. The things in download mode can't be changed and are telling you the truth.
To go to download mode, power off your device completely and then press volume up + bixby + power button. it will ask you if you really want to continue, press yes and then look what it say by "Model Name". If you're at it already, also check the "warranty void" if its 0 or 1 (0x0 or 0x1).
To exit Donwload mode just press volume down + power button for 7 seconds.
You then can download the newest software for which ever device you have.
@jaannnis
Thank you! So in download mode, i found no phone model, instead i found carrier:xaa also the waranty void is 0x0 (no rooted). I google a little bit and found that is the USA unlocked. Also i just realised the back of my phone written model SM-G950U1. I think my hardware is USA unlocked but the firmware is hongkong (is hongkong better than usa unlocked??)
So what do you think i should? the safest way please. i have no waranty, i bought it online shop and the shop is closed.
should i flash usa unlocked firmware with odin? https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s8/SM-G950U1/XAA/download/G950U1UEU2CRB9/214007/
or hongkong? or with smart switch?
Edit update:
1. so i tried smart switch 4.1.17054_16 with device initialization, with various combination (correct uncorrect model, correct uncorrect S/N).
- With wrong sn and anything samsung model the pop up is "unable to find the serial number, model name, or IMEI on the server. Please check and try again"
- correct sn and anything samsung model except SM-G950U1, the pop up is "please check the model name and S/N, and enter them again"
- correct sn and SM-G950U1 the pop up is, " 'SM-G950U1' does not support initializing. Please contact our service center."
2. Odin 3.12.3 with SM-G950U1, 2017 december nougat. The installation failed.
hope it helps to overcome my problems. thx

[Question] J500-FN Wont detect Wi-Fi after factory reset.

Hey folks, my Dad got a Sansung J500-FN (2016) from his friend and is now having a problem setting it up.
Problem:
He performed a factory reset on the device and now it wont find a network connection during the setup.
After selecting the landuage, it just sits there scanning for available connections and never finds any.
Tried:
Clearing cache and further factory resets (With and without several different SIM cards)
Connecting through WPS (It times out)
Entering the network details manually
The Wi-Fi in the house is bradcasting it's SSID and other devices are connected to it and working without issue.
Question:
Is there anything we can do to get past this stage of the setup or force it to connect?
Would flashing a stock ROM resolve the issue and can this be done via a SD card (USB debugging/Developer options are off as the PC wont detect the device).
The device is completley stock at the moment.
I'm at a bit of a loss as what to try next and seem to be going round in circles trying to find a solution, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I haven't played around with this stuff since my Galaxy ACE
If you need any further infor just let me know.
Cheers

Hi,
The problem may get solved by flashing the latest Firmware!
If you want to flash Official Samsung stock rom /firmware, you have got to use ODIN which works from a windows PC with the mobile connected through USB wire when in the Download Mode ( Recovery Mode>Boot Loader> Download Mode ) & it needs that your device is detected by the PC as an MTP device i.e. it shows in the Computer folder with a mobile icon & files can be transferred between the PC & Mobile when connected. For USB debugging some Samsung USB drivers would be needed to install on the Windows PC but developer mode is not needed on the mobile.
Don't just go ahead but to give you an idea as to what you are going to do in the near future : Update/Flash/Unbrick your device via Odin
1. I suppose you are running Windows 8 or later on the PC. Get to know what is wrong with the PC or Operating System : Try another PC, Try another Operating System, Try another USB port, Try another USB connecting wire. Check whether 'Auto Play' is selected in the Operating System settings. Is it all well in the 'Device Manager' before & after connecting the mobile ? When you connect the mobile to PC, the PC should be connected to the internet. 'Device Installation settings' should be set to automatically install drivers from windows update. ( It would be better if you can make a system image for precaution & install pending windows updates )
2. In which country you are using the device ? Which is the Internet Provider ? Did you try another Wifi services ? What is the usability of the device at the moment : Can You use the mobile data ? What is the CSC of the installed firmware on your device ? ( I am interested Just in the CSC Code! )
Let us know.
Thanks.
Thank you for the reply @LittlePro
1.
The computer is running Winows 10 Build 19043
It is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi and this is working as good as it gets in my location.
Autoplay is on (Set to 'Ask me everytime')
Samsung USB drivers are installed and Windows update set to automatically download.
* Swapping ports/cables and trying a different Wi-Fi etc will take time. I am currently confined to bed following a motorcycle accident a couple years ago (Damn Pressure Sores). Next time I'm back in the wheelchair I'll try this and update. It may be due to the port or USB extension I'm using (The PC does detect my Alcatel phone without issues)*
2.
In which country you are using the device ? Portugal
Which is the Internet Provider ? MEO
Did you try another Wifi services ? Not yet, this will take time (See * above)
What is the usability of the device at the moment ?
I can access Recovery/Download modes (Vol Up+Home+Power/Vol Down+Home+Power)
When starting the device normally, It asks me to choose a language and then moves to the 'Scanning for Wi-Fi' screen. It goes no further than this.
Can You use the mobile data ?
After a factory reset there is a popup message asking if I want to turn mobile data on/off. This is set to On, but it doesn't seem to use mobile data.
What is the CSC of the installed firmware on your device
The device was originally in the UK with an EE contract the CSC is - EVR
As soon as I can, I'll try the other suggestions and post an update.
Appreciate the the info, thank you.

That means it is branded. That may be locked to use with EE services. You should look for a firmware for the model : SM-J500FN & Region : TPH
TPH is unbranded firmware for Portugal. My first choice would be that. If you want latest firmware, it comes from Spain unbranded : PHE
The other option may be BTU which is unbranded from UK.
The way to download for me would be either there .That needs membership OR the tool as there.
Let me know.
Thanks. ...
EDIT : It seems MEO from Portugal, PHE from Spain & BTU from UK!
UPDATE:
Managed to get my lazy ass out of this bed, so I was able to check cables/ports.
The USB cable I was using would charge the phone (albeit very slowly) but wouldn't allow data transfer.
Swapped this with another cable and now the PC detects the phone without issue.
I've updated the firmware to the one from spain (PHE). The one from Portugal (TPH) installed the Unbranded firmware for Romania (ROM) for some reason.
Both installed without issue, but I figured if the latest version was the Spanish one, I may aswell use that.
Unfortunately I'm back to the initial problem.
I can select my language and then I'm stuck on the 'Scanning for networks' screen.
There is a new message that appears, saying - An unauthorized attempt has be made to factory reset your device. Please log into your account to verify your identity. Convinced this phone is now just laughing at me lol
I still need to get out of the house to try some other Wi-Fi networks, to see if it just doesn't like my home Wi-Fi
Will update again once this is done or I figure anything else out.
Cheers

It seems TPH is a service provider in Portugal & the unbranded one from Portugal is MEO ?

The device is connected to a particular Google Account which was previously used on this device. Try flashing CSC instead of CSC_HOME. There are also other options in the ODIN but honestly I am not sure about their consequences!
Let us know.
Thanks. ...
Yeah the unbranded one for Portugal seems to be MEO, so I've installed this one (This also happens to be my ISP)
The device still wont detect a W-Fi network.
At this point, I'm beginning to think that there may be a problem with the device itself.
So I'm currently looking around for something to test this.
All the files I downloaded only had one CSC file in them (There was no CSC_HOME). The current file is -
CSC_MEO_J500FNMEO1BQA1_CL10432640_QB12297267_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar
I figured that was what that message meant. If only I could progress to that stage.
Guess I'll keep searching. On the brightside, I'm learning a bit more about phones.
Cheers
