[Q] External HD for NookColor

I'm looking for a...
>very portable external hd
>that has 320GB to 1TB
>that can be connected to the NookColor (which means that it has a micro usb cable or a mini usb to micro usb adapter)
>and can be mounted/navigated using the NookColor's File Manager Apps (Astro/Root Explorer/File Expert/ES File Explorer etc.)
Is it possible or am I dreaming?
You are not dreaming. The requirements are as follows:
Purchase a micro usg to usb(female) adapter. These can be found through amazon, where I got mine) or ebay. About $3.50
Be running cm7 (I am running 7.1 rc1 n144) and have nook tweeks installed.
Find an external hard drive with its own power supply. Usb will not power the drive through the nook.
I run flash drives and sd cards through a powered hub and have connected an old passport external hard drive (the ones with the external power supply) and a maxtor hard drive (I believe they called them book drives) which had an external power source.
Dal, Verygreen, and the rest of the excellent devs here have taken a little e reader and developed a 7" tablet that can rival almost any tab on the market at this time. Buy your adapter, a powered usb hub, and start playing with the usb host mode in nook tweeks. You're gonna love it.

Will the USB thumbdrive work?
Yes thumbdrives work very well using the hub. I have 9 thumbdrives from 2-8 gb sandisk, sandisk cruzers, pny. It reads them all with no issues.

Thought I would post a pic of my system. The stand is a griffin. A belkin powered hub, and a logitech bluetooth keyboard, logitech usb mouse.

Could a webcam run off of that too?

Good luck with the webcam. I have tried 2 cams; a logitech quick cam pro and a MI el chepo cam. Checking dmesg, both cams were recognized and assigned an IRQ but the software does not know what to do with them. I have tried ooVoo, tango, skipe, and yahoo messenger video plugin. The cam is not recognized by any of the programs. So far, that is the only issue I have had with host mode. Hopefully, the devs will come up with a way to get cams to work but, for now, I am content. I can connect my Nikon camera to the nook and dump my pictures directly to the gallery for review and editing or copy them to a flash drive for storage. There are new uses for this nook every day.

I don't think the Nook will power an external hard drive via the USB port, so you'll lose a lot of the portability you're looking for by having to drag around an external power supply.

Do you think you can recommend one or at least link me into a site that has one? Preferrably a 1TB, and is very portable (small). I'm trying to do my own research but it's hard to find an external HD that requires external power supply. All of the HD's I've seen so far is getting it's power from the USB itself...

that second picture looks like it has some different components from the first. I really like that setup far better than the first picture, could you either post or PM me all of its components?
I believe using a powered hub with any hard drive will work. Also I have a USB hub with a micro usb input, that could be used with a mini-b to micro-b cable. I think that would cut down the clutter.
Here are a few of the components I have been using for usb host mode. As previously posted, yes, a powered hub should work with one of the new compact hard drives.

OTG question

I have 2 otg cables one for my nexus 7 one for my S3 both cables work in both devices and i have a male to male usb cable, question is how can i get them to see each other so i can do direct transfer instead of using a usb drive or computer?? Can it be done??

First, have you tried to transfer content wirelessly between the two devices? That would bypass the need to use cables. You can use app's like ES File Explorer on the Nexus 7 to access other devices on the local network. Not familiar with the S3, but if it can access the wireless network its possible there may be settings to allow one to access the S3 from other wireless devices.
Second, to connect the two devices together via their respective USB-OTG cables you would most likely need to have a male type A to male type A USB adapter. Here is one example. The next problem is going to be how each device see's the other once connected. With some cell phones one has to put them into USB mode so other devices will see and mount the cell phone's storage.
Wireless works fine, just wanted to see if it could be done via cable also ive got the right cables they just dont see each other, unplug it n connect a flash drive and see's it so im guessing its not going to be simple.

On my non smart phone I have to put the phone into USB Mass Storage mode for the PC or my Nexus 7 to view and mount the storage space.
If your using a Samsung Galaxy S3, it may not support mass storage mode. But there is an app called USB Mass Storage APK, creates by a XDA Developed that may work. See this link for more info...

Now that looks like the kind of app i need on my S3 thank you very much.... I best go and root my S3 again lol.

I'm thinking you would only want to use one OTG adapter when doing this. You want one of the devices to be the flash drive for the other. The one that will be controlling the session gets an OTG adapter and you connect the second device using a normal USB-to-MicroUSB cable. From the second device's perspective, it is being attached to a PC.
I use stickmount on my rooted N7 and put my HTC Sensation into USB storage mode. Then the N7 sees the HTC as a mounted folder.
I use a OTG lead in the N7 and a standard A to micro-B lead from that to the HTC.
I haven't used it the other way around, as the N7 doesn't have a Mass Storage mode.

[Q] Connect to portable drive for backup

Is it possible to connect the Note to a portable drive to backup the phone, I was looking at a 1tb drive to backup my laptop, tablet and phone. It takes its power from the USB on the laptop, so how would you manage with the two android devices.
Any advice would be appreciated before I buy a drive.

Backup through your laptop and set the destination directory to your USB drive.

What I use an OTG cable connected to the phone, then a harddrive with a cable to the otg.
connect your hard drive to his cable, the data connection to the OTG cable. Works a treat without laptop.
the only problem you might have is that the androidsystem does not support ntfs. So you need fat32. Check youtube on this.

Flaky usb connection on usb otg

Hello,
I have been using this device for a while now since 2 months. Pretty satisfied with everything except the usbotg connection with my e-hdd and pen drives.
After few minutes data connection while data Transfer is lost. This happens every time i connect an external hard drive which does not need additional power supply.
Any solutions please?

USB external hard drive on Shield 2017

I'm about to buy a 2017 Shield TV (NO PRO). I want to plug in an external 3.0 usb hard drive to it, where I store all my movies and TV series, to enjoy Plex server installed in the Shield.
My questions are:
1. Will the external hard drive be automatically recognized by the network too, like if it becomes some sort of network hard drive? In other words, will I be able to access to the hard drive from my iMac through the network in order to transfer other movies while it is still plugged into the Shield?
2. I will connect the Shield to my main TV through a regular HDMI cable. Since I have another TV with DLNA in another room, can I stream from the Shield to this other TV?
Sorry for the dumb questions, I really am a newbie here... Thanks in advance!
