OTG question - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have 2 otg cables one for my nexus 7 one for my S3 both cables work in both devices and i have a male to male usb cable, question is how can i get them to see each other so i can do direct transfer instead of using a usb drive or computer?? Can it be done??

First, have you tried to transfer content wirelessly between the two devices? That would bypass the need to use cables. You can use app's like ES File Explorer on the Nexus 7 to access other devices on the local network. Not familiar with the S3, but if it can access the wireless network its possible there may be settings to allow one to access the S3 from other wireless devices.
Second, to connect the two devices together via their respective USB-OTG cables you would most likely need to have a male type A to male type A USB adapter. Here is one example. The next problem is going to be how each device see's the other once connected. With some cell phones one has to put them into USB mode so other devices will see and mount the cell phone's storage.

Wireless works fine, just wanted to see if it could be done via cable also ive got the right cables they just dont see each other, unplug it n connect a flash drive and see's it so im guessing its not going to be simple.

On my non smart phone I have to put the phone into USB Mass Storage mode for the PC or my Nexus 7 to view and mount the storage space.
If your using a Samsung Galaxy S3, it may not support mass storage mode. But there is an app called USB Mass Storage APK, creates by a XDA Developed that may work. See this link for more info...

Now that looks like the kind of app i need on my S3 thank you very much.... I best go and root my S3 again lol.

I'm thinking you would only want to use one OTG adapter when doing this. You want one of the devices to be the flash drive for the other. The one that will be controlling the session gets an OTG adapter and you connect the second device using a normal USB-to-MicroUSB cable. From the second device's perspective, it is being attached to a PC.

I use stickmount on my rooted N7 and put my HTC Sensation into USB storage mode. Then the N7 sees the HTC as a mounted folder.
I use a OTG lead in the N7 and a standard A to micro-B lead from that to the HTC.
I haven't used it the other way around, as the N7 doesn't have a Mass Storage mode.

External hard drive

Is there a rom or app so I can get my phone to read and external hard drive

Well you would have to get your hands on a cable first. I have lapsed on terminology for usb(or even if the connector allows it...read up on micro usb on wikipedia), but what comes with your phone is micro usb type B to "standard USB male", which will not plug into a USB hard drive. (some ext. hard drives do have "USB male" inputs, but those are for adding extended storage)
However, some of the file explorers do have options for browsing files on your wireless network, so you could plug your hard drive into an NAS or other file server. Then you could access your drive from your phone over the WI-FI.
Also, you can copy files directly to and from your phone if you set mass storage under USB settings and allow it in the pulldown when you plug your phone into a computer.
Thats not what I was hoping to hear. Besides the wire what else stops the phone from reading it directly? Im hoping to figure this out so I can organize everything on one hard and use it thru all my computers, ps3, and phone.

Why not just use an NAS?

The USB port on the phone would have to work as a host in order to connect an external hdd (client) to it. There was some talk of Galaxy S devices having that feature and in that case we would still require drivers for it.
There is some discussion here:

Agreed. I know I saw some discussion of usb otg support, which I believe would be equivalent... Google "fascinate usb otg".

external hard drive?

Hi people,
I read in a review that you can connect an external hard drive to the nexus 7 (the usb powered ones) via a USB Host Cable.
Could any of you tell me if this is correct or not? As i have an Archos 80 g9 and i know it cant do it off the micro usb only the USB 2.0 slot it has.
Thanks a lot for the help

Yes, it is possible but you may need to provide external power to the drive. Use a powered usb hub or something like that. The Nexus 7 most likely won't be able to output enough current to power a spinning drive.
Ah ok, so you are saying that you plug the usb host connection from the nexus to the usb hub and plug the hard drive in to another port on the hub?
I just want to know if this works as 16GB isnt much space when you want to take it on a trap to watch films.
cheers
you need to be rooted. my understanding is flash drives or micro sdcards are good to go, not sure an external hd will work unless powered as previous poster alluded

Since N7's have been out for a few days, has anyone tried hooking up a portable hdd using a micro otg cable? I could plug my portable Toshiba hdd into my Acer A500 tablet without rooting and it would read the contents of the drive just fine. I would watch movies and view pictures as if it were an sd card. Wondered if the N7 unrooted could do the same?

No it does not mount the external storage nor does it have an option to do so. You need to root and install chainfire's stickmount app for this to work.

Hi. I decided to use a wireless drive to store all of my music, movies and documents. So, I purchased the Seagate GoFlex Satellite Mobile Wireless Storage. You can use with Android or IOS devices. I love it.
Yes, its a no-go out-of-the box connecting to a USB thumb drive or a powered HD with a microUSB OTG cable. This doesn't really surprise me, though, because they would need to dynamically detect the device type and mount it on the system. What I haven't tried is a USB keyboard. Anybody do that?

yes could u test it out? i was thinking of buying a portable hard drive but not sure if it will have enough power to use it
does usb 3.0 work? or do i need to buy a usb 2.0
I've tested mine with an old 60GB WD Passport and a new 500GB Freecom XXS. Both are 2.5" USB powered external HDDs, and both worked fine.

great thanks for the info. btw is the new one using usb 3.0 or 2.0? do u know if usb 3.0 will work?
I just plugged in a full-sized USB keyboard using my OTG cable and it works fine. I can touch type, use the cursor keys including ctrl+arrows to skip words, bring up menus with the context menu key just to the left of the right-hand ctrl key, etc, etc. I'm sure it must be using up my battery at a faster rate, though.
Edit: It's just occurred to me that there's a problem with using a USB keyboard to type when the N7 is in portrait mode: finding a stand to hold the tablet upright at the right angle when the USB-OTG cable is sticking out of the USB port at the bottom of the tablet.
Mind you, it's great being able to type at full speed without a soft keyboard hiding a large chunk of the screen.

You can get OTG cables with a right angled micro-USB plug on them, which might help your stand problem. I have one on its way as I was concerned about knocking/bending/snapping the straight plug when its sat on my lap in portrait mode.

Or, just turn the tablet upside down so the cable is pointing up. The display will rotate appropriately.
I think but not sure that you'll want cm10 for the rotate from any angle thing...

how did you manage it ??did you use nexus media importer
Without a custom kernel, the external hdd won't work with Stickmount or NMI if it is formatted NTFS. I haven't actually used NMI, but others have posted about the NTFS issue.

Is it possible? Nexus 7 to Asus TF300T USB on Dock?

Hi all,
I'll tell you first what started this whole exercise.
I ran out of room on my Nexus 7!
I discovered it was because I try to be backup crazy.
I ended up mainly having too many Clockwork mod backups. I think the proper term is Nandroid Backup (let me know if that is correct).
Plus, I had too many Podcasts stored. BeyondPod settings needed to be adjusted.
OK, so just deleting the Nandroid backups would be stupid, I wanted to copy them to an SD card I have installed on my Asus TF300T.
I have Samba (filesharing) installed on all my devices so I can copy wirelessly from Android device to basically any device.
But it turned out, those files are just too big and would take forever.
I had purchased a long time ago, the cable for my Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G, which allows you to attach a USB device to the micro USB port on the phone. Now I can't find the cable, so I will have to order a new one. And I even forgot what the name of the cable is? Can you refresh me on what I should order?
But I have an Asus TF300T tablet with the keyboard dock.
The keyboard dock has a standard USB port on it.
So I figured that it might be possible using the Nexus 7's included USB cable and plug into the dock's USB port.
If it is possible, what do I need to do? I don't want to cause any damage to either device. What settings or software would I need?
And, yes I know I could copy the files to a PC then recopy them back to the SD memory card.
But I'm trying to do a direct copy which will be faster. Essentially, only copying the data once not twice.
Thanks!
Now if I could only find that stupid cable!
Rob
PS OK, this is the only downside to the Nexus 7, I guess this is a good reason to always have a memory expansion slot.

If you have a USB On-The-Go cable - you should be able to just plug it into your device and then directly into the keyboard and it should be all set.
For the memory expansion issue - you can plug a flash drive into the USB Female adapter from your OTG cable. Based on the fact that you have nandroid backups I'm guessing you're unlocked/rooter, so just install the app "StickMount" from the play store and you should be all set to access media/files from your external flash drive.

Thanks.
Since I posted the message only 10 minutes ago, I found the adapter.
Funny, the only name of the adapter on the Samsung box is 'USB Adapter'. Real descriptive!
Yes, sorry, left that part out of the original story. I'm rooted and have CWM installed on the Nexus 7.
And I already have Stickmount installed on the Nexus 7, I guess I must have read the name of the app in one of the forums and thought it would come in handy.
What is a 'USB on the Go' cable?
Isn't the cable that came with the Nexus 7 (it is usually plugged into the charger base, but you can use it to plug into your PC as well). I used that cable to attach to the PC so I could root the Nexus. Is there a difference, mind you the USB port on the dock is the same kind of USB port on your PC?
Thanks again!

[Q] usb otg gamepad question

I have an otg cable, yet none of my accessories work with it and my RAZR MAXX. My question is whether or not I need a powered hub when using the OTG cable. I have seen set ups of other android models using a SIXAXIS controller and otg cable, yet no hub. In this case, it the powered hub not needed since the controller itself is supplying its own power?
Thanks,
Neverused
USB controllers don't work?? I'm interested in this as well

Download USB Device Info:

When you open the app you should see 0 devices under Android and Linux tabs. Now connect just your OTG cable nothing plugged into it and hit refresh, something should show up, usually under the Linux tab that identifies the USB host. Even if the USB host doesn't supply power this will still work as I have tested it on my Touchpad which has no OTG power.
If you saw something appear when you connected the OTG cable, than OTG is in the Razr M. Now try connecting your gamepad and refresh the device list. If its not showing up then there is either something wrong with OTG or you need external power. This program will ID any USB device connected, even those which Android doesn't support since its just matching the device against a list it has. Try getting a USB keyboard/mouse working ad those are universally supported on Android and would confirm if USB host works.
Questions go in the question forum too...
Here's a dumb question. I just ordered a female USB to male micro USB. I wanted to be able to yank pics off my camera and drop them on my phone. Would I need an OTG adapter or does that plane adapter work?

An OTG cable has a extra pin in it that is tied to ground in a OTG cable which tells the hardware to switch to OTG mode. A regular USB cable will leave this pin open.
If I'm able to peel open this adapter that I got, and jump pin 4 to 5 should it work as an OTG cable?

Its possible, as shown here:
http://tech2.in.com/how-to/accessor...sb-otg-cable-for-an-android-smartphone/319982
For me I'd rather just buy an OTG cable, but if you have regular microUSB cables laying around, go for it.
Bought an OTG cable
Bought a simple OTG adapter from newegg. So far....plugged in a mouse and my camera. Both work flawlessly, my camera gives me the choice of either either MTP (?) that goes straight to gallery and image import, or Storage which prompts to a new usb mount. Have not tried a gamepad yet, I have 2 floating around somewhere but not sure what game to try.

Is the USB 3 cable that came with the Note 3 OTG capable?

So far I had no luck accessing external memory using the cable that came with the Note 3 as well as with USB 2 cable that work on my Note 2. Neither showed up under own files or the ES-Explorer. Is there something I need to activate or overlooked on the Note 3?

I have had strange results using the USB 3 mode not seeing some file but then switching to USB 2 and can see them. All with the USB 3 cable. I think it is PC driver related. Cant nail down anymore yet.

The NTFS formatted drives wont work with OTG, so u need drives formatted using FAT32 system..
No one uses them nowadays but OTG only seem to work with them
No, the cable that comes with the phone is only for connecting to the phone as a device. I would have expected the OTG cable that worked with your Note 2 to work just fine with the Note 3.
As for buying a USB 3 OTG cable to use with the phone, I wouldn't bother. I've done a lot of testing and haven't been able to get the phone to connect to a device at USB 3.0 speed.
Here is some more info on what I've tried. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2599045
