Finally im getting this beauty, paid a lot for it so am hoping it lives up to expectations but anything i've read suggests it will and is still the best phone on the market.
Anyway i dont use a laptop / pc so cant really be downloading stuff that requires a laptop like hacking / rooting, etc, etc i just use a chromebook and tablet, is there not an apk' that you can just install which will root the phone without the need for laptop,
i can then install TWRP and am good to go, im not worried about knox or any of that nonsense.
Also would people recommend getting a glass screen protector for this phone with the curved edges or is a case sufficient enough protection, im usually careful with my phones but id be gutted if i got this phone scratched,

No other way to root the device apart from pc mate. You're out of luck on that one. Maybe borrow a friends laptop or something.
There aren't any descent tempered glass protectors out there at the moment. I too am waiting for a good one to appear.

Not good, what about King Root does that not work, too much hassle trying to get a laptop or go to some stinking Internet cafe, once I'm rooted all Is good, I can then download whatever onto the phone itself and good to go.

I agree while it would be nice to download and install and apk like ye oldé TowelRoot to Auto Root your phone, the only way to do it at the moment (due to KNOX Samsungs new AntiTampter feature) is to replace the recovery image with Philz Recovery and then flashing a Custom Kernel to install SuperSU and gain all that rooty goodness... - LINK -
Other then that, less your a dab hand at running Linux on the Chromebook, your going to have issues getting root at the moment

I havent rooted mine yet, so i may not be 100% sure.
i used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056334, so yes essentially i must just be able to unroot and reflash the secure rom i guess
is there a secure wxdd kernel avaialbe
ive got a link to the xwkdd, but its hotfile and really slow, are there any alternatives?
You will have a counter to say you flashed a non-samsung kernel. Unknown if Samsung check this, but it might be a good idea to get a USB jig and reset it. Guide in the Dev subsection.
im banking they dont. anyhow it will not be with samsung ittl be with mobiles.co.uk or ittl be insurance so im not worried about that. ive gone stock now all data deleted even with the widespread gradual blacking out of the phone screen. thanks for help.
What happened with your phone if you dont mind me asking?
it fell on the kitchen floor... kinda silly realy but it got nocked out of my hand, just one of those things. the screen then had a thin vertical purpleish bar and then it went all blue/black. basically completely unuseable now

You broke your phone by dropping it, I hope you're not going to try and warranty it. I assume this is why you're asking about un root.

My wife's evo has some hardware issues with the camera. It is rooted, would you all recommend unrooting if going for a replacement?

Iv ran into this problem in the summer. My charger port was a little funky and non stop went into car mode. i was rooted and at the time was not able to unroot it. I asked for a replacement and when i had to send it in i did EVERYthing possiable so they wouldnt be able to even turn it on to see its rooted lol.
i cracked the screen badly.
shoved a screwdriver into the charger port so they couldnt charge it.
messed up the battery charging cells so no battery could power it on.

Yeah i went a little overkill but i was not able to unroot at all because my phone would not connect to any PC. It was the only other way lol! it worked though!
This question has probably been asked at least 50 times on here. The general consensus is that most sprint stores won't care if you are rooted, as long as you are on a stock rom. However, it is very possible they could flag your device and void your warranty. Since unrooting and re-rooting only takes 5 minutes, just do it to be safe.
The second part of my question is more my interest. I am aware of the general consensus.

If you're gonna unroot (which I've never found necessary, after numerous screen and camera and speaker and bezel replacements), and remove any root related app, I'm not sure what more you could do, or what you're asking.

The reason I say yes is because it's really hit or miss, it depends on the employee who is taking care of you. There are many people who've had success without unrooting and plenty who haven't.
I'm just a better safe than sorry type of guy. Rooting and unrooting only take a couple minutes anyway. Also there are enough refurb evos that most stores will take in your phone for repair and have you pick up a refurb the next day while your phone gets sent off to be repaired for the next person.
But if you plan on not unrooting then I would suggest a stock rooted rom without any root related apps and also a cleared SD card. I've heard a few stories of being turned down for repair for root related material on the SD card even after they unrooted lol.

Hi everyone,
I've just bought 2 new TF300Ts for the children. But what should I do first before handling them over to the kids?
Should I uninstalled all the apps/bloatwares that come with the tablet? Should I root the system and install a new OS?
When I first got my Samsung Galaxy phone, I rooted it and install Cognition. Whenever we get a new laptop/desktop, first thing I do is to go into Control Panel and uninstalled a bunch of apps. Install AVG antivirus, Malwarebytes anti-malware, etc.
I am looking to make the tablets clean, efficient, and fast before giving them to the children.
Thanks,
Personally, I just got mine the other day and flashed TWRP, then ParanoidAndroid (didn't bother rooting because flashing a rooted ROM takes care of that), then flashed the Untermensh overclocked kernel that's provided in the OP of the ROM thread. Keep in mind that there are many settings in that ROM and a lot that can be messed up. If the children are old enough to understand that, I would definitely recommend going the route that I did. With or without the overclocked kernel, this is a great ROM and a lot of fun to play around with. :good:
Everything that I needed was found here in this forum.
Good luck with your decision.

That's a good idea. With kids messing around. It's probably better to leave the tablet alone with the warranty.
But at the same time, I want to make it a little quicker and leaner.
i'd leave them stock too, for the warranty. maybe put a gumdrop case over them too, as they have a good fall protection and a screen protector too. this is what i use, but its mainly for work, indoor and outdoor...
If you're planning to just let your kids use the tablet, then leave it stock for warranty purposes. You're going to want to leave the warranty intact trust me.
I agree. I would most definitely leave the tablets stock with the warranty intact. A lot of damage can be done to a rooted device if the user doesn't know what they are doing. Hmmmm, come to think of it, damage can be done in the hands of the experienced too. LOL
EDIT:
The Gumdrop case that Buckmam suggested is a very good idea too. :good:

the kids could expose some of those defects. from what I understand, once you root it/unlock it, Asus has the right to void the entire warranty, even manufacturing defects.
Also, there is a lot of damage that can be done internally when a device has been rioted. Essential files can.be mistakenly removed. Etc,etc. The worst thing.that can happen is the device ends up bricked. Once the bootloader has been unlocked , there is no sending it back to.the factory. I think the only thing Asus will still cover is MB failure.

There are other cases too that don't look like the Gum-Drop. I just bought a plain, smooth rubber case off Ebay a couple of days ago. I didn't like the look of the Gum-Drop either. LOL I will admit though, the Gum-Drop may look stupid but it is designed for maximum protection. :good:

I hope we are allowed to post links to places like Ebay. If we're not, I'm sure the Mods will let me know.
Here is just a simple rubber case like I purchased on Ebay. It is by no means a Gum-Drop case but it'll do for me. This is just a little something for me to use around the house or when I'm in the car on a road trip.

This is a combo similar to the one I bought. I just wanted something to get me by until I purchase the keyboard/dock. I plan on getting it within the month and will by a true leather case then that will accommodate both the pad and the dock. The case I bought is not 100% leather but it's decent quality. Both the screen protector and stylus are too. I'm very happy with it and the price.

My tablet came with 4.1 on it and I used the bootloader unlocker that Asus provides. If you are on JellyBean, you must first unlock the bootloader before flashing recovery and rooting or it will not work.
As for TWRP. I installed SDK with adb and fastboot. I used fastboot to flash TWRP. Here is the link to the .blob files I used.
http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/97
These are the commands I used once in fastboot:
fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash recovery twrp.blob
fastboot -i 0x0B05 reboot

I just wanted to add that I am running the ParanoidAndroid ROM with the Untermensch kernel and it is running flawlessly. I've had it up to 1.6GHz and it's as stable as can be. No issues whatsoever to report.

Just wanted to add that the rubber case came today and it's what I expected. Just a simple rubber case that will help keep the back from getting scratched up. It will help if the tablet is ever dropped but not much. If you think there's a chance you'll drop your tablet, don't even bother with the one I bought. Get a Gum-Drop.

Lol ya, I mean I was pretty confident it would still work since we did pool tests on the s5 active back in the day and that held up well, only thing I worried for was all the tossing n turning in the washer might damage the phone physically but it looked fine.

haha, that I'm pretty sure it wont. The regular s7 didn't fare well on the bbq test even though that was a bit more extreme, but I'm sure the heat would just render it useless or cause the phone to warp a bit or something like that
