Screen won't turn on but can feel vibrations - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone just got delivered. I excitedly opened it, peeled the plastic off the screen and pressed the power button to turn it on. I felt a short series of vibrations, but the screen didn't illuminate. I thought perhaps the battery was low/dead, so I plugged the phone in and let it charge for a bit. Still nothing. If I press the volume down in conjunction with the power button I hear the sound of a screenshot being taken, but still cannot get the screen to illuminate. I'm so disappointed that I'm going to have to send this back and order a replacement. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

No suggestion other than an exchange. I decided on a return because I realized I'm still fine wtih my GS5... mine seemed to have come with the accelerometer/gyro busted as I couldn't get it to rotate in any app regardless of the menu setting of rotation and after a factory reset.

I'm chatting with a customer support rep, but they won't do anything until I let it charge for 8-12 hours. I explained to them that the phone is clearly on, it's just the screen that isn't working, and they said it doesn't matter, this is step one of all troubleshooting steps. Lame.

If I go that route, am I able to get any sort of expedited reorder, or am I just reordering from scratch?

Pretty clear that he was aware that it wasn't normal. But sometimes people have been through the same situation and may have advice. Whether it be getting the device working or the return process. Also, that's what the Q&A section is for. Why to people make completely unproductive comments? No idea, but it happens a lot.

worse then soft brick, HELP!

ok so basically i installed a custom rom, great.. not really.
it wouldn't connect to a network, my usb failed and countless other things were missing.
fine and dandy, rom manager asked me to do a backup of my original rom so i'll just load that... file unloadable.
great.
Miraculously i managed to get a new rom on my sd card and installed it.
got stuck at bootscreen then loaded in to a black screen that only showed the notification bar.
by now i've gotten pretty flustered and figure a battery pull should re set everything and let it load up fine (after all i'm a previous bb user lol)
but no
no, now my phone won't even power on.. even when i plug it into the wall to charge the screen stays black.
holding any button combination doesn't work..
its literally a brick.
is there any way to fix this?
so far all i've found are fixes for "soft bricks"
sounds like i'm a little past that stage...
Ok, take out the battery, sim, and sd card from your phone. Now with the battery out, plug the phone into the usb and connect to pc. Now, while holding down the volume up/down at the same time, but NOT the power button, put in the battery. And there you should have download mode, odin away.
Good luck.

well i had just bought it that day so it was covered under warranty.
i took it back and told them the upgrade to 2.2 did it.
they gave me a new one no questions,
it also helps that i work for them and am their tech guy so they would have given me the phone to try to fix had it been a customer lol.

Proximity Sensor Problems

I'm having some issues with my proximity sensor. Whenever I call or receive calls and I'm holding the phone away from my face, the screen will go black as if its near my face. When this happens I'm unable use my touch screen and the only way I'm able to use the phone again is if the person on the other end hangs up or if I pull the battery. Sometimes I can get the screen to come back to life if I shine a bright light into the sensor but that doesn't work all of the time. Also, this problem will happen randomly. Some days the phone will work perfectly. Other days this will cause nothing but grief. I downloaded an app called Z-Device Test and it says the light and proximity sensors are working fine. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?
I'm running a rooted Sprint EB13 from this thread.
Anyone have any ideas?
Try running ODIN to reset it to factory and hopefully fix whatever is misbehaving.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, that didn't fix the problem. It's kind of weird. If I vigorously clean the screen in front of the proximity/light sensor it will start working for awhile. Ugh this is driving me crazy.
If ODIN couldn't fix it then it must be a hardware problem, take it to a Sprint store and let them repair/replace it.
I had this issue with mine as well. I took it to a sprint store and showed them how I couldn't end a call or do anything and they replaced it for me.

I was afraid of that. I don't have a protection plan so I'll probably end up having to pay for a replacement.
IF they make you pay for it, which they shouldn't (especially if you call in and explain the situation and explain your general unhappiness with the phone), at least it will only be $35.

$35 isn't too bad. Thanks for giving me some hope.
Yep, if you need hard evidence in case the Reps are pricks (they deal with idiots all day who could blame them for trying to abuse what little power they have) the official word from sprint is here: Click Me!
well if you take the phone to sprint, they are most likely to run the built in sensor test.
Just dial the below code, and it should get you in then you can test your sensors.
*#0*#
It worked on dk28, I am running EB13 midnight4.2 and the code does not work, so I don't know if it will work for you.
You can turn the screen back on with the power button even during a call, unless you've set the accessibility settings to kill the call with that button.

Yeah I've tried that code. The tests show that the light and proximity sensors work but for some reason during calls it goes crazy.

I saw you odin and still had the issue, like stated from xobx it looks like a hardware problem.
It will run you 35 to repair it at sprint if you don't have tep.

I didn't either. They replaced it for free. It's defective and should be covered under warranty.

That didn't work for me when I had this problem.
Update: I took the phone to the store and of course it worked fine there. They did a hard reset in the store and it seems to be working so far. I hope this keeps up.

[Q] Nexus 4 Spots On Screen

I already trouble shot it with Google but I figured I would ask here as most of you know more than they.
I already did a factory reset 3 days ago because I deleted a file I shouldn't have. But now it has come down to them recommending me do another and then getting back if it still persists.
The problem is when I turn my screen back on I see white spots all over the screen for 2-3 seconds. I can't imagine why, or even why a factory reset is going to fix.
I have NEVER dropped (cross fingers) or got it wet, and truthfully have no idea how to tell and wouldnt want to begin taking the back off.
I am most certain there is no water damage
So I have tried:
Switched Wallpapers
Turned phone off then on
Switched from Apex to Launcher
Still there. I am posting a pic below. If anyone could help I would be most grateful.
Again you prolly know more than most of their employees
One time when I had a problem, but eventually got fixed, this is what I was told, they will do an advanced replacement, BUT I have to pay $350, then get it back when they get and verify the phone I send
I am not working so would not be able to do that. I suppose I could switch to my phone of choice I have here and just send it in?
Or I was told contact LG where there is no downpayment needed.
In either case, back then I was told there was stock for this type of situation, now I am told they no longer have any? You have any idea when they will catch up
THANKS for even taking time to read this, and even more if you can help

Can't imagine what sort of hardware issue or fault would cause that, it looks like some sort of effect done by software.
You need to reset your phone and go back to the stock ROM (if not already using that) and then see if it still does it, I suspect it will not.
Regards
Phil
So this was present before the factory reset 3 days ago? If not then do it again

Thanks to everyone, as you were responding, my friend Macky (maybe you know him LOL) suspected it had to be software/app because it showed up on the screen shot. So he said it wasnt hardware
I reset again and no problem
Thanks
lets say it wasn't the app, what could have caused it. (btw I dont root so dont know all the basics you prolly do) Just simple things like the computer that get messed up??

[Q] Nexus 7 wont turn on or Charge

I have read all articles on this forum regarding all issues but none seems to have been of any help. My nexus isnt powering up. When i Plug it in to power, it doesnt show any sign of charging but the back gets warm indicating that power is actually going in. I have tried long pressing for over 1minutes and still the same thing. No response of any sort. I was hoping there should be something that can b done to it like re-running the os like i did my LG optimus when it had the same issue. Please i need help. I have tried all the options of pressing on the site and none seems to help.

Thanks for your response. Really apreciate it. I have checked the battery of my nexus to be sure its well seated and it is. I even changed the battery to a fully charged one and its still the same thing. Since day one it never came on. I have long press for over 2minutes and still nothing. Is there any other thing i can try cus i can send it back to google as my aunt got it for me when she travelled to USA some weeks back and any chance of returning is zero

Motorola support is... Questionable.

Background: My brand new Nexus 6 has a problem on the bottom speaker grille where it protrudes about 1mm more on the right side than it is supposed to. I have tried just pushing it back into place but it just keeps going back to this position. I have tried to overlook it as it is such a small issue, but its driving me insane. I decided to get a hold of Moto and see what they can do (before trying to deal with ATT, ugh)
Conversation is as follows:
Suzette: Hi, my name is Suzette. How may I help you?
Me: hey there
Me: I just got a Nexus 6 from ATT last week. For the most part I am loving it BUT
Me: The bottom speaker grille protrudes a little more on the right than the left.
Me: And just like 1-2mm. I have tried to look past it but its driving me nuts!!! And the more I think about it, on a $650 phone I really shouldn't have any manufacturing defects like this.
Me: Just wondering what I need to do to get it fixed/replaced. Or is this something i should go back to the ATT store I got it at for a replacement?
Suzette: I do apologize for that but I'll be more than glad to help you, remember that here at Motorola we love to help our customers.
Suzette: When did you purchase that?
Me: Last week, if you need an exact date I can grab the receipt
Me: 02/15 actually
Suzette: By the way can I have your first and last name, phone number, email address and location? for chat documentation purposes.
Me: ----------, ----------, ---------------------
Me: I am in Bismarck ND
Suzette: Thanks
Suzette: We are going to do some troubleshooting steps since this is a brandnew.
Me: Okay
[Commentary]: At this point I am extremely confused. Are they going to ask me to fix this myself? Will that not void the warranty? Is this a trick? Read on to find out.
Suzette: Do you have the phone right now>
Me: Yes
Suzette: This will remove any temporary files that may be causing the problem, but will not delete your files or settings.
With the phone powered off, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until the device turns on.
You will see the word "Start" with an arrow around it.
Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "Recovery mode"
Press the Power button to restart into Recovery mode.
You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark and the words "No command."
While holding down the Power button, press the Volume Up button.
Use the volume buttons to scroll to "wipe cache partition" and press the Power button to select it.
"Reboot system now" will be highlighted, press the Power button to select it.
Me: How is this going to help a manufacturing defect? My problem is that the speaker grille is physically protruding more than it should.
Suzette: Oh I see
Suzette: Have you drop it?
Me: No. It was like this out of the box. It is a manufacturing defect.
Suzette: Oh I see
Suzette: We should need to replace that
Suzette: If you want since you just both it please try to ask if they can still replace it or if not contact us again and replace it to us.

Really?
Regardless of how terrible that conversation went with Motorola, you're well within your 14-30 day "Buyers remorse" time frame with AT&T, they should replace it outright at the store if they have some in stock.
LOL wow! That's pretty crazy.
I dont understand. If you are still within your return window, why wouldnt walk in to an ATT store and simply swap it out for a brand new one? In and out in 20 minutes VS. getting the run around from Motorola, giving them a credit card so they can place a $500 hold on it, waiting a few days to get the replacement (Wont say new because it would likely be a refurb) and having to mail the old one back.
Their online support is absolutely terrible. I had the same experience a week ago. My supplied turbo charger no longer works, and my phone only charges through my computer. One would assume the turbo charger is defective. They put me through the same troubleshooting BS, and the agent I spoke to had terrible reading comprehension. Calling the phone support is the only way to get issues resolved.

Because last time I went to the AT&T store with a phone issue I had to "check in" with the door guy, then sat and waited for an hour and a half with my two year old son, then he started to get bored and flip out and I had to leave. This has been my experience probably the last 5 times I tried to do something with AT&T. They have the slowest in-store service I have ever seen in my life.

Yeah Motorola customer support is absolute garbage. I've had nothing but trouble any time I've dealt with them.
Phone hold time was unbelievable, I left my phone on speaker while at work. It was over 1.5hrs before I finally hung up. Got on Twitter and then got some resolution. Sent my phone in to get the broken glass repaired. They received it Tuesday and overnighted a brand new phone (sealed retail box) that Friday. So the repair side of the house was chill and I got to keep my original charger etc.
I only needed to chat with Motorola about getting Motocare for a new Nexus 6 that I bought from the original purchaser. When I couldn't produce the exact purchase date, just an approximation (within a week, accuracy-wise) I was told to contact phone support and given that contact info. Instead, I got the purchase details from the original purchaser and went back to Motorola chat Support, which then directed me to a link on their site to apply for the protection plan.
Overall, a positive experience. With the "can't connect to camera" bug hitting me recently, I might need to contact them again if this seems more of a h/w than s/w glitch (i.e., I was able to get camera back by clearing Google Camera data+cache a few times and reinstalling its update).
