Space - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I'd like to know why we only get 24gb of usable space when its a 32gb phone, and a CM12 based ROM that only uses 250mb. Thanks Bacu12

The rom is only that size zipped up. While CM and AOSP based roms are smaller then stock based roms generally there will always be a good bit of space taken up by the OS.

Thanks, 8gb of space used though? Just curiosity for the most part.

Wouldn't be unheard of. I can't remember which one did it, HTC or Samsung but at one time their os was 12gb large.

[Q] 4 GB internal memory

Hi,
I am going to get this phone shortly. Can someone please answer the following questions for me.
I have come to know that although the phone has 4 GB of internal memory only 1 GB is usable. Does this change when I install a custom rom (e.g. CM7). Can I then utilize all the space?
Another question. Does skype (video calling) work ok?
Thanks
The phone only has 1gb of internal memory, and when you install any rom, it uses some of that internal memory to store itself.
This says otherwise http://www.gsmarena.com/t_mobile_mytouch_4g-3520.php

Tis true: Internal 4 GB storage, 768 MB RAM
But I was pretty sure it had one..

By the way, Option is the man that knows his stuff, if you ask a question, and he answers, its right. Savvy?

It has 4 gb of internal memory, but you can't touch all but 1. You can't even see it. So as far as anyone is concerned, it has 1gb.
I'm not so sure because a Rom doesn't take up 3gbs. So the site may just have false info.

doesn't matter how much internal storage it has, 1gb is used by the system, so it must have 1gb. whats the point of having 3gb that nothing can use. It's gotta be mis-stated specs.
I'm not always right. However, this time I'm pretty sure I am. There is only 1gb of storage for you, the system, or anything else. If you found a website that says otherwise, its wrong.

PC Mag confirms 1gb memory. Think the g2 is the one that is screwy like that with the 4gb onboard memory, but only 1 is usable.

This link will likely answer all of your questions. Basically it is 4GB in specification, but utilized in such a way as to have only 2GB available. Of that, some is used by the ROM itself for /system, /cache, etc, leaving us with about 1GB. FYI that site has a lot of useful information that applies to the Glacier even though he is specifically talking about the Vision. Very similar devices.
Also, I personally think it is a bit shady to advertise it as 4GB, when in fact it is actually 2GB. That's like advertising an engine as 300hp, when in effect it only has 150hp in your particular implementation. Just because the engine is actually capable, in some form, of putting out 300hp...lol Rough analogy, I know, but you get the point. Basically they really should advertise as 2GB.
Hi,
From what I've learned since yesterday the mytouch 4g actually has a 4 GB rom chip but only 1 GB is usable (same problem as the G2). The following link describes this in detail.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#The_Missing_2GB
The PC Magazine has 'as tested' written in front of 'internal memory' so its an observation they've made. Not official specs. Official specs for MT 4g state that it has 4 GB rom
http://www.htc.com/us/products/t-mobile-mytouch-4g#tech-specs
Regards,
Ali Kazmi
Good link Ali. Thanks. That puts the information in more layman's terms. So I think the answer to the question of whether or not it actually has 4GB is "well, it does...but it doesn't"

I don't see how the amount of RAM would affect your purchase...
My recommendation is to stay away from this phone like the plague...
Low internal storage without GB makes this a phone a boat anchor
If your stuck with AT&T and want a hardware keyboard... go with a samsung captivate glide

GSMARENA.COM also said that The HTC Wildfire S has 512 MB of RAM, but in fact, It only has 418 M
It prolly has 512 but... the 100 missing is prolly memory that makes certain hardware features work

I would assume without a working cm7... we don't have an miui rom

well why say that and get us all excited? lol
There's an MIUI port based on laidaxin's CM7 rom, it's on the same Chinese forum as the CM7 rom. I believe it's fairly early in development, not really ready for daily use.
Why would you guys want MIUI...
CM7 is so much nicer, no?

Well id have to say miui and cm are pretty much neck and neck... miui being a little heavier on the hardware end though

thanks!!!! other question: best custom rom? miui porting work fine ?
There is no custom rom that is the best. You have to look around and see review and comment on the Rom and bugs that it might have.
I personally use xylon.
Also miui is still a port, not officially ready for a daily driver

Best bit of advice anyone here can give you is too read my friend. Even the question you asked if you think about why would there be a difference in simply storage size that would effect the phone. There is a lot of useful information and tweaking that can be done. Do yourself a favor and explore but be safe and smart before doing anything....
Personally I think the 8GB is fine, I have the 16GB myself but I regret it as I keep most of my stuff (music/pictures/videos) on the cloud...
In terms of ROM support either will be plenty, if you see a ROM that uses 8GB of internal memory you should avoid it like the plague anyway.
Just look at what you use on your sdcard on your current device and take it from there, IMO.
My favourite ROM is Root box, it has most of the desirable features from all the other main ROM distributions (CyanogenMod, AOKP, Paranoid Android).
If you like simplicity, stick with stock or MIUI.

The above posts are proof that there is no best custom ROM in the same way there's no best colour. It's a completely subjective question, so there's no right answer. If you want to fine the most popular ROM then you can just check out the thread in the general forum.

MoDaCo Switch, Sense rom and Google Edition on one device, looks great

This is due for release soon, you can have Sense and GPe on the same device and change roms at the push of a button, and both roms share the same single pool of data, what a great idea, cant wait for this to be released

Yeah i agree, best of both worlds, the fact the your data is available on both roms regardless of which rom you download it on is amazing, cant wait
I was concerned about the space it would take up but apparently he's aiming for less than 500mb which would be immense. I wonder if this can be developed and used for other devices to switch between sense and stock android.

This is really neat I just wonder if you can load up your own roms or if they have to be ones included, and if MODs will work. I have a feeling regardless this will be my daily driver.
This looks amazing - I always dreamed of this with my One XL.
I haven't bothered to root/ROM my One yet, but this just might push me over the edge.
so would having 2 roms eat into the free ram on the rom your running, or just onto sd storage space? If its the latter, I wouldnt mind at all. running these roms now, whether be sense or GE, i usually only have 500mb of free ram at times, and sometimes less than that..
regardless, I am excited to at least try it out. I guess I would fall into that category of being indecisive on which rom I would like to run and would be nice to switch on the fly. hopefully it can be compatible with Viper

Currently it only takes up a bit of extra storage not ram because, in order to switch, it requires a reboot.

As the guy said above, its only 1 rom running at once so it wont eat into your ram, tho PaulOBrien did say he is going to look at trying to use Sense features over on the GPe rom which could be interesting
If it could get ir working on Google edition I would use this and probably never use sense.

Convert fully to GP edition?

Is it possible to fully convert an S4 from ATT to the Google Play edition? I ask because I love the phone and its abilities but I am not liking touchwiz. I did the full conversion ffoe my former HTC one and was just thinking out loud.
Thanks.

It is possible in most ways but in reformatting internal memory for space. Unfortunately neither can google edition of format to touchwiz. So they are stuck with extra slim touchwiz roms.
Simple answer is no, in this case, due to signatures involved. And must also remember your bootloader is and will always be locked. Functionality wise, with wasted internal space, it would be a yes.

If you are not in MF3 (blown qFuse) then you can install any of the Google Edition Roms available. It's great, you get the best performance and it's really stable.

I've been spoiled by the pure GE ROMS, after being in 4.2 and 4.3 for a while I can't go to CM, I find it too buggy and unreliable. I've been enduring gummy 4.4 for a week but as soon as I can get the GE goodness I will flash that and won't flash anything else until the next big release
