I reallllllly hate Touchwiz. Back from the days of the Mesmerize on good ol' US Cellular I always have. But the S4 has some cool features, specifically smart stay, air gestures, and the likes. It also has a lot of battery killing BS that I don't need.
Just wondering if it will be possible for developers of AOSP ROMs like AOKP and CM to have the pure google experience with some of the S4 specific features integrated.
I remember on the Epic 4G Touch getting S-Voice from the S3 and it was sketchy and didn't work great. So I'm kind of doubtful, but curious nonetheless.

Hopefully when the Google galaxy s4 is released it will be pure aosp with the added gs4 features.
As with other TW based features the only way we'll see them for AOSP is if Samsung decides to release them ready-to-go on an AOSP build. Based on their history I wouldn't bet on it happening. Look for alternate apps where possible in App Store.
I thought the aosp s4 version that is to be released is probably not going to have all the cool features as our phones just pure stock which probably means none of the air gestures and such which come intergrated with touchjizz.
Why not just root and remove the junk you don't use. Given they aren't tied together somehow.

Most S4 features are just that features. Why buy an S4 if those cool features are AOSP (Open Source). HTC can just put it in a future update. We are at a point where going pure android really takes away from a device. Some features aren't worth losing.

Do you guys expect the stock JB ROM for the upcoming Nexus flavor of the S4 to be backward compatible for existing I9505? That would enable us to get a pure JB experience on our I9505 on a relatively "official" ROM? Presumably this would be stabler/less buggy (wifi, BT, LTE bugs etc) than existing CM10-based custom ROMs? If so, hopefully this will give our resident devs a more resilient base ROM to develop off of.
Look fwd to hearing your thoughts...
It'll be good to get the stock android experience, like one of those inside a Nexus device.

Probably yes assuming they have the same chipset/hardware. Just look at att/verizon being able to flash i9505 roms. How I love the beauty of open source drivers.

the answer is, probably, yes.
notice how the new S4 nexus has the exact SAME SPECS as the i9505 has. (same screen, cpu, gpu, 4LTE.. every single Component is the same as i9505)
that is why i believe roms for the new s4 nexus, will be ok

Does anyone know when we might get the firmware for the i9505 google edition? I'm sure there is much talk about being able to flash this on a regular i9505. I would like to see this used as a better base for all aosp roms in the future. Do you think we have to wait until the 26th release of the device or will we get a leak?

Indeed. But given that it generally happens to Nexus devices, there is no reason to believe this won't happen to the Nexus edition of the S4 eventually. The binaries for the Nexus 4 were released in March for example and it now has full AOSP support.

I would hope, seeing that this was announced at Google io, and it will get regular updates just like nexus devices, Google is going to be in charge of software for this endeavor. But how much control will Samsung have over Google's policy in this respect? One would hope negligible if any, especially given that the backbone of the device isn't even based on Samsung hardware anyway. If Google's S4 was based on the I9500 it might be a different matter.

Do they? How much of the device is actually Samsung hardware that requires Samsung drivers? It's a Qualcomm device. Other than drivers for the bespoke Samsung features like Air View/Gesture and Smart Scroll etc (which Google won't be using anyway) I can't think of anything Google need off Samsung. This is exactly why making AOKP and CM roms has been so easy for the device. The first guy who created a CM rom did it without even owning one .

Hello everybodie!!
Well i start this thread just because i´ve allready searched the web quite long enaugh to find out no concrete answer about that if is it possible and secure to upgrade my GS4 GT-i9500 from 4.2.2 samsung touchwizz ROM to the google play edition 4.3 pure android ROM.
I'm awared that some hardware features as some of the sensors are not fully exploited, but i´m an old android user and i'm new on samsung, and the truth is that i miss pure android. I dont use most of the touchwizz features anyway.
I just want a simple, neat and beatiful android phone with the power of the GS4. The thing would be simplier if i'd live in the US, i´d probably just buy the google play edition and lalala. But it's not available in my region. So the only chance i got is to modify my classic GS4 to get what i want.
There are some forums on the web that provide the way to do it, but i don't trust them just because those methods aren´t published here, the place i consider the most reliable one to get info about anything related to these matters.
I´ll be very thankfull if someone can help me.
Well unfortunately, since you have the GT-I9500, which is the octa-core version, you cannot install any of the Google edition Roms for your device as those Roms are for the Qualcomm snapdragon 600, which is the GT-I9505, so unless someone ports it to your specific device, no you cannot install 4.3 unless you want a shiny brick

To get yourself a pretty clean Android experience. Try CyanogenMod 10.2 for the 9500. Its stability is improving quite fast and its suitable to use as a daily driver as of now. It's just the camera thats not working. But apart from that you get Jelly Bean 4.3 and a super clean and fast UI.
Its worth it!

Now that this rom is released, does anyone have any idea how long something like this would take to port over?
I'm not sure if it's an easy thing or not. I know AOSP was pushed almost same day, albeit being buggy.
I'm pretty excited to get the update on my AT&T phone, however I don't remember how long it took for the 4.3 to be released for regular models.

Awesome! That's where I got my 4.3 GPE rom, thanks for the update dude!
I'm not an expert on this, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.
By what I understand, the Google Edition ROM runs with little modification on the AT&T S4. The main hurdles are with the kernel, which has to be modified slightly to run on the AT&T S4. Once a developer is able to modify the kernel to run, porting the rest of the ROM over shouldn't be a big deal. The developers are pretty brilliant and quick on this stuff, so I imagine you'll be seeing ports of the GPE ROM here pretty soon.

Basically. I mean, there isn't a significant difference in the hardware between a normal Samsung S4 and a Google Edition S4, except the LTE chips used for retrieving signal (depends on your carrier). So that being said, the kernel shouldn't be a big deal and the ROM shouldn't be either. I'm really hoping to use Kangakat as soon as it's released, I'm a BIG fan of Kangabean and have been using it along with Omega ROM with dual boot. Can't wait for this! Thanks for the good news!
