Will New Features ever be on AOSP ROMs? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I reallllllly hate Touchwiz. Back from the days of the Mesmerize on good ol' US Cellular I always have. But the S4 has some cool features, specifically smart stay, air gestures, and the likes. It also has a lot of battery killing BS that I don't need.
Just wondering if it will be possible for developers of AOSP ROMs like AOKP and CM to have the pure google experience with some of the S4 specific features integrated.
I remember on the Epic 4G Touch getting S-Voice from the S3 and it was sketchy and didn't work great. So I'm kind of doubtful, but curious nonetheless.

Hopefully when the Google galaxy s4 is released it will be pure aosp with the added gs4 features.

As with other TW based features the only way we'll see them for AOSP is if Samsung decides to release them ready-to-go on an AOSP build. Based on their history I wouldn't bet on it happening. Look for alternate apps where possible in App Store.

I thought the aosp s4 version that is to be released is probably not going to have all the cool features as our phones just pure stock which probably means none of the air gestures and such which come intergrated with touchjizz.

Why not just root and remove the junk you don't use. Given they aren't tied together somehow.

Already rooted and removed bloatware, but I still dislike Touchwiz. It's colors, fluidity, etc... are just wrong wrong wrong. I want my AOKP back, even CM would be fine. Just dislike Touchwiz so much!

would be nice to have a working ir blaster for cm builds..
you think samsung will release the needed materials to get that working?
or do you think the google version will have open source that we can port it to get it working?

It would be nice, but it won't happen. Google has already said that it will be a Nexus experience device. No Touchwiz features, I'm afraid.

we'll see. especially with jelly bean 4.3 being launched with it, I think they might take advantage of the s4s features

Most S4 features are just that features. Why buy an S4 if those cool features are AOSP (Open Source). HTC can just put it in a future update. We are at a point where going pure android really takes away from a device. Some features aren't worth losing.

SGS notification bar controls on Nexus S?

I am/was a Galaxy S user. Loved TW Launcher and the several controls being integrated in to thee notification drop down. How can I get the latter on my new Nexus S?
I recently downloaded a big zip with a bunch of SGS apks longer the tW launcher.. Might the drop down controls be in there?

Go to the theme section and there is a mod to add them. Must be on GRJ22 and deodexed.

Or, go back to SGS. Its a much better phone than Nexus S. Soon you would miss other things about it as well.
I took the same journey assuming Nexus S to be better and feel for AOSP experience, but was glad to be back on SGS. New JVP ROM (2.3.4) has totally transformed the experience on SGS.
99% of people that have owned both phones would probably disagree with you. Yea, galaxy s has nice features. Doesn't touch the nexus s though. Sorry

AGREED 100% this is coming from a guy who started off with motorola milestone>SGS>HTC desire Z> now the SNS. and i can say without a doubt the SNS is the best, even without a qwerty keyboard. I love the roms out there and pure google experience just gotta get used to touch screen but the gingerbread keyboard made that one a piece of cake!
I should have mentioned I9000. Not the one you get in US with keyboard. In what respects do you reckon NS is better?

Every. I prefer stock android over TW or Sense or Blur. We have i9000 equivalents here in the states as well. The vibrant is nearly the same device. We actually have 5 or 6, maybe a few more variants of GS phones here.

Keyboard is epic 4g. I used a vibrant and definitely prefer ns. I personally needed cm7 and jumped ships. Didn't like team whiskeys work. People gave them more credit for no reason.

just isntall cyan 7 ROM. it has the control shortcuts in the notification bar, and you can customize them too. it also has individual swipe notifications away to clear them, one by one.

What would you like in the future ROM's.

I'm interested in a Toucwiz/ASOP lean hybrid. I'm really digging the Touchwiz but I'd love it cleaned up, optimized etc.

This is what I'm going for.
Literally everything TouchWiz removed besides the vital processors.
27th it's on.
AOKP with ability to install and use Samsung apps.
... It would take a lot of work but I would throw $50 toward a dev who could pull it off
Oh yeah, and tablet mode.

Yes I know, I am currently using AOKP in tablet mode on my note.
I believe that Samsung apps could eventually be used if someone was able to fork the framework somehow. Im not saying its an easy thing but it sure its possible.

I believe Protekk from AOKP is getting the S3 on T-Mobile. I follow him on twitter and know he was tweeting up tmo for the launch fail and was selling lots of devices prior to the launch. Sounded like he was waiting to get one on or around the 27th.

yeah. i just want vanilla ice cream sandwich. that's it. and STILL retain Wi-Fi Calling capabilities. don't care for touchwiz. thanks for giving us great hardware, Sammy. but howza bout you just let google handle the software. no need to try and improve it.
and i also want these phones with frickin' laser beams attached.
Id be fine with touchwiz stripped of all bloatware, leaving sammy tweaks (smartstay etc.) and wifi calling, but give us the CM7/tmo theme engine, touchwiz is fugly. The single most important thing I want, and its a safety thing because I drive for work, volume rocker track skip.

I'm not sure about what the base will be but the ROM will be themed to look like Touchwiz Nature UX. My dev partner Tmogalaxys2 has a ROM called Galaxy SBean in the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 section that is themed to look like Twiz Nature UX. It is one of the most popular JB ROMs for the phone.
I'd be interested

Multiview from Galaxy NOTE 2 in Nexus 7?

Hi!
I am talking about the amazing true multitasking available in the NOTE 2
I googled a bit and I only found a version for the S3 and the S2

You could always ask one of the people who ported it to the S3 or S2.
I think that'll be your best option, to be honest.

The Note is on the Touchwiz framework...the app would basically have to be rewritten from the ground up. OR someone would have to build a Rom on Touchwiz framework.
Short answer is nobody is going to do this...Not going to happen.

The US variants of the S3 still don't have it. I would assume a non touchwiz device wouldn't be getting it before the us variants do. Maybe the guys who ported TW to n7 could do it?

[Q] What does the Google Edition S4 and leaked JB 4.3 mean to us?

Does this mean we can FINALLY have a fully functioning 100% working AOSP MMS app?!? Can I just DL the leaked ROM (here) and pull the MMS.apk and get it working? I'm about to try now also, does this mean that AOSP ROMs will be basically 100% stable? Also, since this Google Edition GS4 has all he bells and whistles (Air View, Air Gesture, etc.) does that mean future AOSP ROMs will have the TouchWiz goodies as well?

It's definitely looking in a good direction, The IR is working on the Google edition from what I have tested using WatchON. I would be interested to see if we could get some of the S-apps over and working, I just don't like how many soft dependencies they have on each other.
Isn't it using the TouchWiz framework though??
