Battery Issues - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know a lot has been posted about the N7 2012 battery problems. There are two major issues that I have been dealing with for well over a year now.
1. It takes 8 + hours for my device to fully charge. depending on how low the battery is.
2. My device will not charge with the screen on. if I play a movie with it plugged in it will not even hold a charge. I use TomTom for GPS & this is extremely frustrating.
It has been documented that the USB port could be the cause of this. I did have the USB assembly replaced once on it back in March of 2014. Also had the mainboard replaced twice in the same time period. Those repairs were due to my device not being recognized by any computer. Even after this series of repairs my device had the same issues.
Has anyone replaced the battery because of a similar issue? I am half tempted to scrap it be Android 5.0 performance suck s for an Asus Zenpad.

1. takes long time to charge fully.
2. battery wont charge when using the tab.
but my backup is good as for now...

Weak Charger?
I'd recommend, to almost everyone, to pick up a "Charger Doctor" off of eBay for a few bucks. These will give you a readout of the chargers working voltage and amperage. For these tablets a charger should be putting out at least an amp (1000ma) @ 5 Volts during charge. Many chargers are overrated ( these tablets come with a 5V @ 2 amp charger) and it sounds like yours is not putting out enough juice. I seriously doubt that the USB port has anything to do with your problem. My charger doctor has identified dead and weak chargers tons of times. Some chargers I got from China were rated at [email protected] and put out only 100ma! No wonder my phone wasn't charging. I took a picture of the readout and they refunded my money. One of these should help you sort out your problem.

I can definitively say that it is not an issue with the charger or the battery. I just put in a new battery a few minutes ago. My N7 is still charging @ 0.46 Amps. That charge will output 1.2 Amps when connected to me Dell Venue Pro 8. There is definitely something wrong with my N7 just like so many others. So, i will be putting it to rest in favor of an Asus Zenpad here shortly.

Is someone else also facing inaccurate battery reading with battery SNN5893A

I am facing a strange problem with my device battery indicator it drains the battery very quickly from 100 to 1% in about 2 1/2 hours and after which it gives a battery life more than the time it took to discharge from 100%.I have tried almost all the methods given on various thread but nothing worked.And today on a droid froum i saw a thread in which they have mentioned that the atrix batter with serial number SNN5893A gave them the similar issues like mine when they used this battery with droid.
Is it possible that i am having these issue bocz of this serial number battery as my device battery number is also SNN5893A.

I have three of those batteries that you have. One bought from the UK and ordered two of them from the US. These batteries, being fake or not, gives the same battery charge as the original. I blame Motorola for this because it is impossible to purchase the original batteries from any where.
The exterior of these batteries would wear off much quicker than the original. The low level battery, when is not, has trade off in apps that would not work if the battery level below certain levels i.e. CoPilot app. Charging the battery with the Atrix handset can workout a headache too.
I have eventually bought two desktop chargers to solve the problem. The charger is able fully charge both types of batteries, the good and the bad. See the link below where I purchased the second from for about £14 from Hong Kong. In UK it costs almost the double. Reliable trader since I got mine alteady. With each desktop charger I can charge two batteries at same time. The desktop charger works as a stand, plugged to MicroUsb, too. This is how the second battery is charged. This either can be plugged to the mains (wall outlet) or to the computer. To charge the spare battery it must be plugged to the mains (wall outlet) only.
Now, you can save yourself, from my experience, and buy the Anker alternative from ebay which is the cheapest source. I have read the batteries perform better than those you and I have even though they are at 1800mAH.
A word of warning; I used the power plug shipped with Atrix to charge the battery from the desktop charger. That might have damaged the plug because I no longer can charge neither Atrix nor my Defy with it. The usb cable came with the handset works when I plug it to my laptop.

[Q] recently Verrrry slow charge: Charger/cable got damaged?

At first when I got my nexus 10, it was charging quite nice, overnight would charge from 30% to 100%, but recently it stopped doing so, for example tonight after 8 hours it got from 35% to 70%, all stock: same cable, same charger.
Also, sometimes I used to put it on charge while using it, like when watching video, and it used to charge even if slow, now when doing this it says charging but the battery level goes down....
can the stock charger or cable be damaged? why did it stop charging fast overtime?
I used the its usb cable and charger few times to charge my new OnePlus, which requires a high ampere charge, can this cause the charger to overwork and then damaging its power output?
I read about the pogo charger does the job better, but I also read about the 28/24 usb cables, and I guess that the stock cable is 28/28, they did it like this to sell pogo charger cables. but the main issue here is that with the same combination it was better a month ago....
I have multiple chargers around the house with various amperages that I use for all devices, except I do have a bit of fear using my oneplus chargers with others for your same reason
About a month ago we decided it was worth it to buy the pogo dock on eBay for our nexus ten so it can be used as a digital picture frame when not in use, great decision, it seems to charge faster than any of the other chargers and get to see pics of our newborn all day as well
Consider either this or buying a new cable/charger for much less money. Either way my best guess is this is what you need, but you can always try a factory reset or reflash stock to see if it is a software issue

Mine had the exact same problem after about 15 months use. Combine the slow charging with the atrocious battery life and you're left with a barely usable tablet. I later bought the pogo cable and switched chargers to no avail. Then I just said screw this and sold it.
My nexus is 3 months old, so it can't suffer from battery wear down in such little time.
Will try resetting the whole thing and try again....

Charging Speed

i have had the V20 for about 12 hours in which time it charged from about 50% to about 75% ... my Note would accomplish the same in about 15 minutes ... and yet the V20 is supposed to run the same type of quick charger on the same size battery ... something about this doesn't rub me the right way
yes i did use the phone and unplug it a few times etc but it still should have been much faster ...
it was connected using its own cable and charger BUT through a USB extension cord ... so then i thought maybe that's the problem - maybe i need a longer type C cable and to get rid of extension cord ... but i need to have an answer to that BEFORE buying new cables ...
so i plugged it in directly ( no extension ) and tried to see if it charges in correct mode ...
and here is where i face plant into a wall of excruciating stupidity ... every single app out there measures charging current, whereas what i really want to know is whether the charger is running at 5V standard voltage or using the quick charge 9V voltage ... amazingly there doesn't seem to be an app to show this - or is there ?
my galaxy note would simply say " adaptive quick charger connected " when plugged into quick charger but the V20 doesn't say anything like that.
accubattery app says my screen on charging rate is 760 ma and screen off is 1760 ma ... and the charger of course states 1.8 A so that's consistent ... but is that at 5V or at 9V ? the charger supports both - which one is it ?
this is killing me - so much stupidity. it shouldn't be that hard to figure out whether the phone is charging correctly or not.
anybody have an idea how i could find out whether the charger is actually stepping up to 9V without physically cutting the USB cable and using my multimeter ?
EDIT: i realized i have a kill-a-watt ( actually two of them ) and i can measure power draw from 120V outlet ... so i did that. the draw fluctuated from about 6 to 13 watt. now if we assume 90% efficiency on the charger then full power would have to draw 18 watt from outlet - clearly it never got close. on the other hand at 5V it should have maxed out at around 10 watt power draw, and it went quite a bit over that so it would seem to be using the 9V mode ...
at this point however i'm up to 90% battery and can't expect it to charge at full rate any more as some battery charging algorithms taper off above 80% or so ...
i tried with and without extension cord and noticed no difference ... also if i remember correctly my Note also charged fine over this same extension cord ... but i'm not sure
EDIT: played with turning off 2nd screen as well as shutting down device completely - this phone is crazy. power draw is all the place - at one point it went to ZERO and stayed there until i unplugged it and plugged it back in, then it would fluctuate between zero and 14 watts ...
you know back in the day i had LG Nitro HD and it had worst battery performance of any phone ever ... and this V20 seems to be living up to that legacy. WTF.
anyway, it seems the charger and the cable and extension are not to blame - it seems there is some kind of software weirdness that is resulting in very sporadic power draw ...
slow charging is one of the reasons i switched from iPhone back to Android - i expected this V20 to perform similarly ( blazing fast charging ) to the Note 4 i had before the iPhone 6S Plus ... but it's charging performance so far is almost identical to the iPhone - slow as a snail.
i already spent $80 on case and screen protector and i'm supposed to spend a bunch more on extra cables and memory card as well as sell my iPhone and at the same time i'm thinking - maybe i should just return it ? going to have to observe it for a while longer before making any decisions either way ... terrible.

The V20 will negotiate with a 3.0 charger to tell the charger what power it requires at that moment so power will fluctuate during charging.

yeah it fluctuates a lot. i gave up on apps and just using Kill-a-watt now which is a physical power meter you insert into 120V outlet. it shows power draw from charger, not output, but we can assume about 90% efficiency from input to output of charger.
i let the V20 drain to 40% overnight and restarted the test today. with the extension cord it went up to 16 watt draw from outlet and stayed there - charge quickly went up to 55% then i tried without the extension cord and now its only at 11 watts. this is with both screens off. so far my conclusion is that using an extension cord makes no difference but the level of charge on the phone does impact the charging speed. you need to drain the phone to measure full charging speed.
i will continue with my testing but i am somewhat relieved. 16 watts is close to spec, in fact the spec is 16 watt but on the OUTPUT side of charger, not input, so i'm withing about 10% of spec.
i'm also a lot less nervous buying charging cables now that i verified 16 watt charging over many years old USB 2.0 extension cord ...
EDIT: wow it went from 55% to 68% while i was typing this message ! this is very different from what i saw yesterday ... it was running at 11 watts while i was typing. looks like the phone charges fast as long as it is: 1) drained and 2) left alone. if the phone is almost full and you keep playing with it the level of charge barely changes.
EDIT: at 89% charge it's now down to just 4 watts power draw from outlet ... 25% of what it was pulling at 40% charge. so far it looks like it tapers charging speed off gradually with charge level - starts early and tapers it off to almost nothing as it nears full charge ... and all the while it fluctuates with processor and screen use and probably other factors such as temperature. maybe the reason it went to 16 watts when i plugged it in the morning is that the phone was cold from not being used all night and perhaps it now warmed up so the power got tapered.
maybe i'll stop testing it - it seems to be working correctly, just not the way i originally expected it to.
overall i'm disappointed with this phone but the only phone i would trade it for is Pixel XL 128 GB Very Black which is unavailable ... so i guess i will keep it.
the phone i'm most impressed with right now is ZTE Axon 7 i got for my mother - it is shockingly good - if it wasn't for FM radio, IR Blaster, Removable Battery, Laser Autofocus, Dual Camera, Dual Screen and Nougat i would even say the ZTE Axon 7 is BETTER than V20. the main problem with ZTE is it's just not expensive enough for my ego - otherwise it is great. the screen is is super sharp, vivid and punchy, the front facing speakers are loud and crisp and then there's the 2 year warranty. i'm jealous ...
but i will stick with V20 to protect my dignity. because let's face it - if i'm out on a date i want to have the latest, most technologically advanced and most expensive phone - not the cheapest phone, even if it is just as good or better. really happy with my decision to get Axon 7 for my mom though. she loves it as well.
The way QC works is that it will charge fastest from low power until around 70-80% and then slow down A LOT to help preserve the battery. That is why you saw a high wattage and then when you got into the 80's you saw a very low wattage.
QC is mainly for you to get 40-50% of battery power in a relative short amount of time when your battery is low.
I bought a little device that measures the voltage and current of the charge. And I'm using my own Quick Charge 3.0 wall charger.
When the screen is off or powered down, it charges at 9V/1.8A max. Resulting in about 16W of power. Which is pretty much what the supplied LG charger delivers.
When the screen is on, it charges at 5V/0.5A
My QC3.0 charger is capable of up to 9V/2A and 12V/1.5A, 18W of power. The V20 doesn't seem to draw that much power. And now I'm starting to doubt the V20 is truly a QC3.0 device.

I'll grab voltage/amp reader that I have at home and test my 3 QC 3.0 chargers I have (I'll drain phone to around 20% and then test them and see how it goes) - I'm going to test with the phone off so it pulls the max and see what it ends up with

Thats weird, Im using my Note 7 charger on the V20 and it charge the phone completely in less that 2 hours. In my case I always drain my phone to 3% and leave it charging up to 100%. I will check again tonight to be sure.

I wouldn't drain it that low all the time unless you plan on stocking up on batteries or don't mind depleting longevity of battery quicker than usual.

I was getting 9.2v @ 1.67A = 15w of power. This is the max that my USB multimeter can do so it would seem that this charger is good for QC 3.0 as it did fluctuate voltage as needed.

That is still wasteful use on a battery and giving the next guy a raw deal. But to each his own. I try and make everything last and more efficient so the next person feels like they are truly getting an almost lightly used phone. If I sell my note4, they're going to get a lightly used battery on top of the 3 extras, with fixed GPS and better reception and cleaned out USB port with no oxidization. Same with my HTC m8 though that was only used as daily driver for two weeks and then a DAP for trips and occasional home use. Definitely selling the m8. They are basically getting a lightly used phone and the battery should still have some good life coming out of it. And personally I think jump is overpriced leasing but I guess you can drive it like you stole it. I prefer handing down the best experience I can to the next person.

My devices go back to tmobile which then go back for refurbishment. With the V20 it's easy for them to just replace the battery.

Just tested this one at work. Phone was at 28% and I had been streaming Youtube for a good 2 hours before doing the test.
Ended up pulling 9.17v @ 1.68A = 15.40 watts (again maximum that my tester can do).
I'll be ordering a new tester that can handle up to 25A and testing again to see if I can pull the max 18watts of power that the QC 3.0 chargers says it can deliver

This looks like a good device.
There are time on my v10 where I'll plug it in and it will charge at a reduced rate so I have to unplug it and plug it back it and it changes to fast charge, that's just been my experience. This is using factory plug and adapter too.
So you might want to make sure the phone says "fast charging" and not "charging".

Brand new G4 Play Battery Issue

I bought a brand new unlocked Moto G4 Play from.Amazon Prime last week. Between purchasing it on Prime and the phone being old and OOP I got a great deal. However, I'm having a couple issues.
The first is with the battery. It charges insanely slow. Yesterday morning I had it plugged in for 3+ hours and it only charged 70%, from 15% to 85%. Also, for a battery rated at 2800mAH, it seems to drain fairly quick. Is it possible that the battery lost some of it's power while sitting around in the Amazon warehouse for so long?
My second issue is with file transfers onto my Mac. This is the third Android phone I've owned and it's the first to.cause my computer to freeze up when connecting it via USB. The charger that came with the phone is just one piece, I.e you can't disconnect the USB cable from the outlet plug. I had rummage around for a USB cable to use. It's an old cable, so I think that's what could be causing my.computer to.freeze. I'm gonna buy a new USB cable today and hopefully it fixes the problem.
Getting back to the battery, is there an app the can analyze my battery? So I can find out if it's defective or just not running at 100%? Any other suggestions on what I can do to remedy this problem would be greatly appreciated.

As far as apps go you can check the Play Store, and go by rating to see what is best for you. I use this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fsinib.batterymonitor
Charging with the stock charger will take hours. It's only rated at like 527 mamps (or whatever it's called), but it will never charge fast. I use a 2 amp quick charger, and from around 20% to 100% it takes just about an hour.
The drain may be because it's new, and getting settled in, so it should get better after a bit of time. Plus it does take a couple charge cycles to reach its full charging potential. I get an easy 5 1/2 to 6 hours screen on time on a full charge.
Now for using a computer I don't have experience with Macs, but I have heard issues with Android and Macs not playing well together. Maybe newer/better cable will help.

Like said above, the charger that comes with it is very low power, you can charge faster with a 1 - 2 amp charger and it won't hurt anything since there is built-in circuitry in the phone to control charging.
When I first got my G4 Play, I charged it up and let it sit unused for about 2 weeks only checking the battery remaining periodically and it still had ~15% left after 2 weeks on standby.
If your battery doesn't get better, you may want to exchange the phone with Amazon before your return is up.
G4 Play XT1607 Battery Drain
I'd like to revive this post real quick. @adam79 did you get your issue figured out?
I bought a phone from eBay. Ok, a bunch of them. I'm buying broken, fixing, and selling. I have hovered around G4 Plays as that is what I learned with and am slightly comfortable with. This new issue has got me stumped though.
Moto G4 Play - listing stated 'will not power on or charge'. No problem, I have extra parts. I tried to plug it in and sure 'nuff, no power. Tried another battery and she fired right up with Marshmallow already reset. I replaced the charging board and it started charging but it was hot. Hotter than normal I thought. Said that it would take 3 hours to fully charge from 71%. Whatever. She wanted the update to 7.1.1 just like the two xt1609s, the other two xt1607s, and my recent xt1601. I let it update then turned it off. Battery was dead the next morning. Plugged it up and no charging animation appeared. Another battery and it fired up. The heat is coming from the metal plate just above the battery contacts. Drains the battery no matter if it's on or off. What could it be?

Help: Problem with Fast Charging

I bought my galaxy note 4 in Saudi Arabia and It's been 6 years until my phone fast charging has stopped working. I don't have idea how did it stopped working. I've changed different charger together with different cable but nothing happened. A charger with same output and a cable that holds up to 2.1 A. Nothing happened. So I decided to go to service store and they changed my flexy charge kinda thing. And they said It's probably something wrong with the IC on processor or in the machine. My guess was fast charging doesn't work because the USB port has damaged *probably, so by replacing the USB port will work again. I kinda think that they replaced the sparepart with replica or I could say grade AAA and not with the original (which an average store can't provide such a thing). And yeah I go to an average store which I read on Google review with around 300 people giving 5-4 stars.
And yes I did go to Samsung store first and for some reason they can't fix my phone unless I accept my risk that fixing it will make the phone dead. And it cost higher for like over 50 pound. That cost could get me a new phone lol. Probably because I bought from overseas.
I'm frustrated with this issue regarding with normal charge I had to wait for hours just to charge until full battery. And yet while this battery comes with 3000 mAh, it depleted fast like around 6 hours while using productively. I admit this phone was the best at its generation. To be exact, I charge my phone from 0%-20% around an hour. So to go full battery, I must charge for around 6 hours or let it charge for the night.
My question is:
1. How does fast charging works? Is it really the processor that controls current output? Or somehow just change the flexy charge will make it works again?
2. If somehow I can't stand with this phone, which Samsung phone that actually more reliable and great than my galaxy note 4? (I kinda like Samsung A series, it comes with cheaper price with alot advantages but you guys can give me options)
I assume you already checked that. But just in case. You checked settings->battery->fast cable charging ?

Fast charging can stop working because of the USB cable. I had to change cables a couple of times when fast charging stopped working with them. So I can imagine that USB port can affect it. It is controlled by the processor, which is why some kernels don't have fast charging.
You can replace the USB port on the note 4. It only costs $10 on ebay. But it is not an easy replacement, because you have to separate the screen. I managed to break my screen doing that.
You can also try to buy several replacement batteries for your phone, and an external charger. Then walk around with a replacement battery, and when the battery dies, pop another one in. And charge the old one in the charger. That could also solve your battery problems, because it could be that your battery is old. (and the standard battery on the note 4 is 3220 mAh, not 3000mAh. I saw a video on youtube claiming that fake note 4 came with a 3000 mAh battery)
The best phone to replace the note 4? That's pretty easy to answer - another note 4.
Some people like the note 9 very much. Of course it doesn't have all the features that our note 4 has! The LG V60 also looks nice.

So the fast charging controlled by processor. But is there any possibility by tiny little piece in a processor has damaged and that's why the fast charging has stopped? I did told the service store to change flexy charger as many as possible, but still it's not working. And I told them to replace my usb port on my stock flexy charger, and still it can't do the thing
Sorry I seem misspelled there, my battery comes with 3220 mAh, so my phone is genuine from Samsung.
