Google's next version of Android will be known as Marshmallow.
Google today confirmed that it has selected the sugary treat as the next nickname for Android 6.0. At its I/O developer conference in May, the search giantannounced only that "Android M"*would be coming soon, but now the name is official. The Android statue collection at Google headquarters also*got a new addition today: a green android clutching a marshmallow.
Google today also revealed the official Android 6.0 SDK and opened Google Play for publishing Android Marshmallow apps. Download it via*Android Studio.
"With the Android 6.0 SDK you have access to the final Android APIs and the latest build tools so that you can target API 23," Google said in a*blog post.
Google also updated the Android Support Library to v23, which "makes it easier to integrate many of the new platform APIs, such as permissions and fingerprint support, in a backwards-compatible manner."
Developers can try it out on Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and Nexus Player, which will receive an over-the-air (OTA) update over the next few days.
The first devices to get Android Marshmallow will probably be Google's next-gen Nexus devices. Over the weekend, images of what appears to be the LG Nexus phone*appeared on Twitter. Huawei is reportedly also*making a Nexus phone.
The news comes shortly after*OpenSignal found*that there are at least 24,093 distinct Android devices in the wild, which is up from 18,796 last year.
Will it hit on Xperia Z series!?

It is not out. Just SDK and preview builds for Nexus devices.

What the heck is this? Did you just copy paste someone's article with out double checking what you posted?
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk

Should delete this misleading post.
1, Android 6 is Not out, the sdk, development tosh etc etc is released, as is the same for every version.
2, copied and pasted some boring article from the Web, or should say Trolled.
3, no mention of an Xperia in that post.
To sum up, Why post unrelated crap which is misleading on this Xperia z2 forum, the average guest or member may not understand what is meant by sdk etc and may indeed be confused why their phone isn't getting an android 6 update.
Just delete ya post and stop trolling rubbish like that.

Bye bye this topic

android 2.2 on the way according to some intell

not my artical just found it orig web page
androidandmeDOTcom/2010/04/news/android-2-2-is-coming-what-features-do-you-want/
replace dot = .
Android 2.2 is coming. What features do you want?
By Taylor Wimberly on Apr 20267
The majority of Android phones are still running an outdated firmware, but that hasn’t slowed Google from advancing their mobile operating system. Everyone knows the next version of Android (codenamed Froyo) is on the way and the rumors (1, 2) are beginning to pick up that the Nexus One will receive it soon.
Based on the data from our analytics reports it appears Google has already begun testing on their next firmware – Android 2.2. Google engineers have routinely given codenames to future builds of Android (Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, etc.), but they don’t receive a point release till they are finalized and nearing distribution.
We have shared this reporting data before and people are always quick to point out that it can be easily faked, but I have spoke with additional sources familiar with the matter who confirmed Android 2.2 is currently being tested.
The feature set for Android 2.2 was frozen long ago, but it remains mostly unknown. Google decided last year that they would no longer publish public roadmaps for future versions of Android. Based on the information we can gather, it appears Android 2.2 will mainly focus on performance enhancements.
Some of the rumored features for Android 2.2 include:
•JIT compiler
•Free additional RAM
•OpenGL ES 2.0 enhancements
•Flash 10.1 support
•Fixed problem with “crazy screen” / Resolution of cross multitouch
•Activation of Color Trackball
•Enable FM radio
Some of these features are plausible and others we have no clue.
The JIT compiler has already been confirmed by Google and we expect to find out new details during Google I/O. Android engineers will be leading a discussion that informs devs how to test and tune their apps to work with the new compiler.
Additional free RAM should come thanks to the new Linux kernel being used in Froyo. Google is moving from 2.6.29 to the newer 2.6.32 which makes it possible to address the extra RAM. This has already been done in custom ROMs like CyanogenMod so expect this feature for sure.
I’m no expert on OpenGL, but it has long been rumored that Froyo (or a future build) will add new APIs to the Android NDK which will let Java devs have full access to the OpenGL ES 2.0 library.
Flash 10.1 is coming in the first half of the year. It is entirely possible it could be tied to a future Android firmware and be included with an OTA update.
We have already addressed the HTC touch sensor issues. It sounds like a future software update could be used to clean this up a little.
Multicolor trackball notifications are definitely coming. Android hackers like ChainsDD have already unlocked this feature for users of custom ROMs. Google advertised the multicolor trackball during its launch of the Nexus One, but the feature was cut from the final Android 2.1 build.
When it comes to the FM radio, I have no idea. Other HTC phones on a similar Snapdragon platform (Desire and Incredible) include the FM radio so it’s not out of the question that the N1 has it too.
I spoke with Google’s Eric Tseng during CES and he told me there were many secrets left in the Nexus One that we would discover later.
When is it Android 2.2 coming out?
Circle May 19th on your calendar. This is the opening day of Google I/O and I’m anticipating the release of Android 2.2 (and maybe the Flash 10.1 beta) will be tied to this event. Google has provided every developer attending the event a free Droid or Nexus One, so it is possible to see a simultaneous release on both devices.
I’m really curious how first generation devices are going to play with this release. We are expecting most phones to receive Android 2.1 this month, so it will be interesting to see how Froyo fits in. Some of the Android engineers have been talking about Froyo on the Google boards and it is unclear if the HTC Dream and Magic will be able to support it since they only have 192 MB of RAM.

Ubuntu dev preview for Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 coming next week

In January, Canonical teased a version of the Ubuntu software for Galaxy Nexus smartphones would be released sometime in February.
The new operating system was announced just before CES, revealing Canonical's intent to bring the full range of desktop capabilities to compatible smartphones.
Canonical has primarily used the Galaxy Nexus as its test device thus far, and it wasn't that shocking to learn a developer version of Ubuntu would be handed out so soon.
However, the developer just revealed a version of Ubuntu for Nexus 4 would arrive with the Galaxy Nexus edition, which comes as a bit of a nice surprise.
Preview of promise
Set to arrive on Feb. 21, the touch developer preview of Ubuntu for both Nexus smartphones will provide images and open source code for more savvy users to mess around with while they wait for a completed version.
The idea is to give Ubuntu enthusiasts and developers a chance to see what the OS has to offer, and give an early lead on potential app creation for the smartphone software.
Canonical will also release tools to help users flash their existing devices to the developer preview, which would allow them to stay up to date with the most current version.
Attendees of Mobile World Congress can bring their Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 smartphones to the Canonical booth, where the developer will flash the devices themselves.
Additionally at MWC, Canonical will have a variety of Ubuntu devices on display (including a possible tablet), though the actual proprietary phones aren't expected to arrive until October.
"Our platform supports a wide range of screen sizes and resolutions. Developers who have experience bringing up phone environments will find it relatively easy to port Ubuntu to current handsets," said Canonical's Pat McGowan in a statement.
"We look forward to adding support for additional devices for everyday testing and experimentation."
The group has also created downloadable app design guidelines, giving potential developers the power to create for the full range of Ubuntu platforms.
Though iOS and Android have dominated the market thus far, there's plenty of room for a possible third option as Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry 10 have yet to assert themselves in the marketplace.
Whether that OS is Ubutnu will largely depend on how quickly and easily users are able to assimilate the open source software.

What's New in Windows Phone 8.1

This article describes key new features and improvements in Windows Phone 8.1.
"A must read" for all WP developers (but not a hackers of course )
There are lot of "tasty" features in WP 8.1; as for me, it sounds like a great platform improvement without having to upgrade hardware. Hope to get dev preview of WP 8.1 very soon
I've been looking all morning for this article...thanks.
Didn't the leaked SDK contain all this a few months ago?

No, some things were hidden.
Hi,
An post, talk already of Windows Phone 8.1, on XDA Portal.

anaheiim, this topic is a little bit different. Article I've posted shortly describes new APIs for developers; it's not a discussion about user experience
P.S. Joke:
- Did you heard: Cortana will marry Siri?
- Are you kidding? It's not possible!
- No, it's possible in 17 states...

You are right, I did not see your link to MS dev blog in your first post.
Dev Preview of 8.1, will be released, of microsoft source during the first half of April.
And WPCentral source, announce April 14.
And for those who did not know (but I think you're all aware), the WP8.1 SDK is officially available in Release Candidate.

Yikes! This Windows Phone 8.1 Update seems to be a whole new OS with a ton of new features and improvements in UI and API.
Still didn't get: do they at MSFT plan to make the Update freely available through Windows Update to exiting Windows Phone 8 customers?

Yes! All Windows Phones can get updated to 8.1. It depends on when (and sadly, if) your carrier releases it. However if you want to get past that, you can just join the dev preview and it'll be downloadable sometime this month. Sources have been saying either the 10th or the 14th. So lookout

I thought MSFT had complete control over which devices get upgraded?
I saw in build conference that they had upgraded even the lowly 520 to 8.1!
Cheers!

I really thought they said (at build) that 8.1 preview was supposed to be available for download today 4/8.
They do. What part of @desolate1's post suggested otherwise? Join the dev preview program and get the update straight from Microsoft (as soon as it releases) while the bits are fresh!
It's only if you want to get it through your OEM and/or carrier that you'll need to wait, and risk disappointment. Reading comprehension, yo!

Already tried to dump APKs, almost everything is for arm64, i think ports will not be such a thing. The included launcher and wallpaper picker are 32bit tho, but are the same as those leaked before, with a different signature tho
Unfortunate if true. I was curious what might be ported to the N6.
Someone can Im sure, and hopefully integrate Google assistant into our roms, that's the only thing I want, pixel launcher is already on my phone
Does anybody have an extractable system image, where I can pull alarms, ringtones, notifications and the SystemUI and Framework? I wouldn't mind getting ahold of that new battery icon.
I was able to unrar the images posted via that link and was able to simply ext4fuse mount them. No need to run through sim2img it appears. The media ringtones and notifications appear to be the same files that were released back in August.

@Yasharkhan: I don't think Google Assistant will ever appear on the Nexus 6, for a very simple reason: the 32/64-bit divide. The Pixel/Pixel XL devices run a 64-bit Snapdragon 821 while the Snapdragon 805 in the Nexus 6 is only a 32-bit processor. 64-bit processors can run 32-bit apps, as evident by the Pixel launcher being a 32-bit app in a 64-bit system, but 32-bit processors cannot run 64-bit apps. If Google makes the Google Assistant a 64-bit app and does not create a 32-bit version, even if we could install it on the Nexus 6 it won't run. Since the Assistant is not an open source app, no one would be able to build a 32-bit version that would run on the Nexus 6.
I'd like to be wrong on this one, but the Assistant is an exclusive that only the 5X and 6P are going to get, if Google decides to provide it.
absolutely correct!

Interestingly, however, we can already install Allo, which has the Assistant. I don't think I would put it past Google to offer a 32 bit option since the code base for it is already there. 64 bit devices may see it before the N6 simply because someone will port it over to other 64 bit devices from the Pixel. But otherwise, I think Google is going to to play the long game here (maintaining official Pixel exclusivity for a while) and eventually release it for any device that can support API level 24 (?) If memory serves, Now On Tap had this kind of exclusivity when it first appeared with the 6P and 5X
With the Nexus 6 being Google's last 32-bit device, and with the Pixel line being 64-bit only, chances of the N6 getting the Assistant are between slim and none. Allo is not a terribly good example. While it does have an assistant, the assistant supposedly only works in Allo. A big stumbling block in porting the Assistant from Allo would be Google's penchant for encrypting their code.
I would like to be wrong. I'd like to think we'll get the Assistant. However, I don't see it happening.
Is the new launcher a newer version than what has leaked? if so, can it be pulled out, and posted as an APK?

I don't mean that we will see a "port" to 32 bit devices. I mean we may see official Google support sometime in the 7.x lifetime. As long as the N6 receives official 7.1 and up (which according to what I read today, the N6 may not. 7.1 will only go to devices that can support Daydream... and unless there is indeed official support for Vulcan (different argument entirely...and I don't mean developer support like Qualcomm has insinuated will be possible)), the N6 may not see 7.1 onwards.
I guess I need to upgrade to a 6p, to take advantage of a lot of the future apps.
We won't see official support, as it's not in Google's best interests to support a device that is two years old with a feature that is an exclusive on the Pixel/Pixel XL. The 32/64-bit divide is a convenient excuse to not provide the Assistant. Same goes for Vulkan.
We won't be seeing Android 7.1 anytime soon, if ever. Google has apparently not released any code related to 7.1.

No. What you said is that Google may provide official support to the N6 at some point. I said they won't provide any such support, and provided reasons as to why. How you could draw a conclusion that I said essentially the same thing as you is unknown.

I've added some highlighting for context. I'm not trying to argue with you. But, this clearly shows that I also doubt that we will see official support... So yes, within context, basically the same thing.

Regarding Google assistant for our nexus 6.
Found this mod in Nexus 6P forum and was able to implement it in my Nexus 6 successfully.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/development/mod-google-assistant-stock-nbd90x-t3477868
Did not require flashing/porting anything at all. Must be on any stock or stock based Nougat ROM (I use latest Nutty Nexus by RachetPanda)
Warning : Experiment at your own risk. Editing build.prop may cause your device to not function properly.
My exact steps-
1. Make sure you have Google App (6.5.35.21 or newer)
2. Add ro.opa.eligible_device=true to the end of your build.prop
3. Edit build.prop and change ro.product.model=Nexus 6 to ro.product.model=Pixel
4. Clear Google App data and remove your Google account.
5. Reboot.
6. After reboot add your google account and activate Now on Tap. This will walk you through setting up Google Assistant
Bugs : Encountered none so far.
Well, contrary to what we have been saying, Google just officially said that the N6 will indeed get 7.1
And near the end is this line:
"...in early December, we’ll roll out updates to the full lineup of supported devices — Nexus 6, 5X, 6P, 9, Player, Pixel C, and supported Android One devices..."

Oh Man! I Can't Wait For 2028 !

It's Getting Real Close Now!...
That Magical Year.. 2028.
I hope someone can prop me up in front of whatever means of computer will exist in 28' and let me look at pictures while they read to me what Android in it's Infinite Wisdom has chosen to name it's upcoming Firmware. :good:
You See.. In 2028, Android Will Have Run Out Of Letters In The Alphabet.
And since "Android Q" is already being mentioned... Android Z is just a few more heartbeats away.. (See Attachment)
THIS IS RIDICULOUS
At the present time only *** 0.7% *** of Android devices have Android Oreo running on them...
Android Oreo was in Alpha Testing in March of 2017... And released to the public on August 21, 2017.
And only 0.7% of all current Android devices are currently running it ?
And only 26% of all Android devices are running Nougat! which was released in 2016...
But yet, here we are prepping for the release of Android P and starting to talk about Android Q.
Am I missing something?
Seems like the powers that be should be focused on working together to get these updated op systems injected into these Expensive deivces a hell of a lot faster than the current rate of 26% for Nougat and 0.7% for Oreo.
Hopefully.. Project Treble will help elevate these percentages across the board.
