It's Getting Real Close Now!...
That Magical Year.. 2028.
I hope someone can prop me up in front of whatever means of computer will exist in 28' and let me look at pictures while they read to me what Android in it's Infinite Wisdom has chosen to name it's upcoming Firmware. :good:
You See.. In 2028, Android Will Have Run Out Of Letters In The Alphabet.
And since "Android Q" is already being mentioned... Android Z is just a few more heartbeats away.. (See Attachment)
THIS IS RIDICULOUS
At the present time only *** 0.7% *** of Android devices have Android Oreo running on them...
Android Oreo was in Alpha Testing in March of 2017... And released to the public on August 21, 2017.
And only 0.7% of all current Android devices are currently running it ?
And only 26% of all Android devices are running Nougat! which was released in 2016...
But yet, here we are prepping for the release of Android P and starting to talk about Android Q.
Am I missing something?
Seems like the powers that be should be focused on working together to get these updated op systems injected into these Expensive deivces a hell of a lot faster than the current rate of 26% for Nougat and 0.7% for Oreo.
Hopefully.. Project Treble will help elevate these percentages across the board.

Android 2.2 is coming. What features do you want?
By Taylor Wimberly on Apr 20267
The majority of Android phones are still running an outdated firmware, but that hasn’t slowed Google from advancing their mobile operating system. Everyone knows the next version of Android (codenamed Froyo) is on the way and the rumors (1, 2) are beginning to pick up that the Nexus One will receive it soon.
Based on the data from our analytics reports it appears Google has already begun testing on their next firmware – Android 2.2. Google engineers have routinely given codenames to future builds of Android (Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, etc.), but they don’t receive a point release till they are finalized and nearing distribution.
We have shared this reporting data before and people are always quick to point out that it can be easily faked, but I have spoke with additional sources familiar with the matter who confirmed Android 2.2 is currently being tested.
The feature set for Android 2.2 was frozen long ago, but it remains mostly unknown. Google decided last year that they would no longer publish public roadmaps for future versions of Android. Based on the information we can gather, it appears Android 2.2 will mainly focus on performance enhancements.
Some of the rumored features for Android 2.2 include:
•JIT compiler
•Free additional RAM
•OpenGL ES 2.0 enhancements
•Flash 10.1 support
•Fixed problem with “crazy screen” / Resolution of cross multitouch
•Activation of Color Trackball
•Enable FM radio
Some of these features are plausible and others we have no clue.
The JIT compiler has already been confirmed by Google and we expect to find out new details during Google I/O. Android engineers will be leading a discussion that informs devs how to test and tune their apps to work with the new compiler.
Additional free RAM should come thanks to the new Linux kernel being used in Froyo. Google is moving from 2.6.29 to the newer 2.6.32 which makes it possible to address the extra RAM. This has already been done in custom ROMs like CyanogenMod so expect this feature for sure.
I’m no expert on OpenGL, but it has long been rumored that Froyo (or a future build) will add new APIs to the Android NDK which will let Java devs have full access to the OpenGL ES 2.0 library.
Flash 10.1 is coming in the first half of the year. It is entirely possible it could be tied to a future Android firmware and be included with an OTA update.
We have already addressed the HTC touch sensor issues. It sounds like a future software update could be used to clean this up a little.
Multicolor trackball notifications are definitely coming. Android hackers like ChainsDD have already unlocked this feature for users of custom ROMs. Google advertised the multicolor trackball during its launch of the Nexus One, but the feature was cut from the final Android 2.1 build.
When it comes to the FM radio, I have no idea. Other HTC phones on a similar Snapdragon platform (Desire and Incredible) include the FM radio so it’s not out of the question that the N1 has it too.
I spoke with Google’s Eric Tseng during CES and he told me there were many secrets left in the Nexus One that we would discover later.
When is it Android 2.2 coming out?
Circle May 19th on your calendar. This is the opening day of Google I/O and I’m anticipating the release of Android 2.2 (and maybe the Flash 10.1 beta) will be tied to this event. Google has provided every developer attending the event a free Droid or Nexus One, so it is possible to see a simultaneous release on both devices.
I’m really curious how first generation devices are going to play with this release. We are expecting most phones to receive Android 2.1 this month, so it will be interesting to see how Froyo fits in. Some of the Android engineers have been talking about Froyo on the Google boards and it is unclear if the HTC Dream and Magic will be able to support it since they only have 192 MB of RAM.
p.s. if in wrong spot please move it im a tootal newb

Google's next version of Android will be known as Marshmallow.
Google today confirmed that it has selected the sugary treat as the next nickname for Android 6.0. At its I/O developer conference in May, the search giantannounced only that "Android M"*would be coming soon, but now the name is official. The Android statue collection at Google headquarters also*got a new addition today: a green android clutching a marshmallow.
Google today also revealed the official Android 6.0 SDK and opened Google Play for publishing Android Marshmallow apps. Download it via*Android Studio.
"With the Android 6.0 SDK you have access to the final Android APIs and the latest build tools so that you can target API 23," Google said in a*blog post.
Google also updated the Android Support Library to v23, which "makes it easier to integrate many of the new platform APIs, such as permissions and fingerprint support, in a backwards-compatible manner."
Developers can try it out on Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and Nexus Player, which will receive an over-the-air (OTA) update over the next few days.
The first devices to get Android Marshmallow will probably be Google's next-gen Nexus devices. Over the weekend, images of what appears to be the LG Nexus phone*appeared on Twitter. Huawei is reportedly also*making a Nexus phone.
The news comes shortly after*OpenSignal found*that there are at least 24,093 distinct Android devices in the wild, which is up from 18,796 last year.
Will it hit on Xperia Z series!?
It is not out. Just SDK and preview builds for Nexus devices.

What the heck is this? Did you just copy paste someone's article with out double checking what you posted?
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk
Should delete this misleading post.
1, Android 6 is Not out, the sdk, development tosh etc etc is released, as is the same for every version.
2, copied and pasted some boring article from the Web, or should say Trolled.
3, no mention of an Xperia in that post.
To sum up, Why post unrelated crap which is misleading on this Xperia z2 forum, the average guest or member may not understand what is meant by sdk etc and may indeed be confused why their phone isn't getting an android 6 update.
Just delete ya post and stop trolling rubbish like that.
Bye bye this topic
Preview images: Android N preview images will be available today for the Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, General Mobile 4G (Android One), Nexus Player, Nexus 9, and Pixel C.
Android Beta Program: Google is announcing a new Android Beta Program to make it easier to try new versions of Android on your development devices via OTA(http://g.co/androidbeta). (Update: This site is broken until later today, per Google.)
Multi-window: Android N finally adds support for split-screen multitasking ("multi-window"), which OK very cool, but! The new multi-window API also allows for picture-in-picture video, which I think is way more exciting. Persistent mini-YouTube window anywhere in the OS? Yes please. But it's not clear if that's for all devices or only Android TV - Google cites TV as an example.
Direct reply notifications: You know the handy direct reply features of Hangouts and Messenger in the notification bar? There's now a whole API so any app can add a standardized direct reply feature. This is potentially huge - we'll have to see how developers take advantage of it.
Bundled notification handling: Ever get tired of Gmail or Hangouts eventually just giving you an "X new notifications" or a bulk list of items when things stack up that you have to basically address by going into the app? Android N introduces bundled notifications - notifications that contain multiple items can be expanded to show all items in the list, allowing you to take actions on each item (for example, deleting 3 emails in a list of 10) individually, instead of having to act on them as a group or go into the app itself. Together with direct reply, Android's notification bar is about to get a hell of a lot more powerful.
Improved Doze mode: Google hasn't specified how exactly (yet), but Doze mode is getting even better at sipping power when your phone's display is turned off. Details on how much less power will be consumed on average weren't provided, as I'm guessing Google is still fine-tuning Doze's new improvements. Hopefully we'll know more when N leaves the preview stage.
Java 8: Android now supports Java 8 language features through the Jack compiler we detailed over a year ago.
$150 off Pixel C for developers: As a way to encourage developers to test out N on tablets, Google is offering $150 off the Pixel C for devs here.
A "final" N release will happen this summer: Hiroshi Lockheimer says Android N will be shipping in "final release" form to device makers "this summer." That means OTAs for existing devices could come any time between June 21st and September 21st - but I suspect we'll learn more about that at Google I/O. At least, hopefully.

g920i user here too... This is the last time i buy a samsung flagship device. Not one release. Meanwhile 920f users are complaining because their specific CSC hasn't been released even though they've had MM for ages lol.
Note 5 in Korea getting second round of updates.. A few SM-G920F have also started to get the second round of updates. Then SM-G920I getting the MM in Q3 2016.
I wonder if devs successfuly make working AOSP source from cyanogenmod, will they be able to easily port N preview to S6?
Holy molly. I think I just came up with the best theory on what N's name will be. Heard of Nerds? Nerds Candy. These candies are made by Nestle. What version of Android that has a Nestle name? KitKat. If you press a button in Kitkat, the highlight action is square. In Lollipop and Marshmallow, circle. Android N cannot be Nutella. It has no form. Nerds on the other hand is kind of circle. N still has the circle highlight action. Check the pictures below. Nerds candies and N's wallpaper. Coincidence? Just a crazy theory on my side. xD

This is an awesome theory mate! :good:
But I think Nerds candy is a bit big for OS name, or maybe not. They can drop candy and say "Android for NERDS"
oh thanks..this is i am waiting for .

FYI:
Android N: What’s it going to be called? | Pocket Now
And here we are just finally starting to get 6.0, pathetic. That fragmentation thoughhhhhh
Because versions 14.1 and 15.1 are not actually versions but refers to Android N and Android O, why not use "Lineage N" and "Lineage O"?
We could name the builds "Lineage X x.x.x Nightly"
"X" could be the letter of the android version it works with
"x.x.x" could be the Lineage OS true version
"Nightly" could be the status, for example "Nightly" "Beta" or "Release"
To ty knowledge, this originates from back in the CM days. Though I wasn't into ROMs at the time, i think CM jumped to a new digit when the Android version did not. For example, CM10 for Android 4.1 and CM11 for Android 4.4.

@Jrhotrod is correct but, just to add to that response...
The Version Numbering sequence actually began prior to CyanogenMod.
Before CyanogenMod, the developments were known simply as "Cyanogen". The Cyanogen had, what's known now, the GApps already built in.
After Google had (legally) demanded that they stop this practice (Cease and Desist), of having the GApps built in, they then changed their name to CyanogenMod and bumped up the version numbering.
LineageOS initially released their developments based on the two CyanogenMod 13 & 14 releases and still uses this on those areas of the LineageOS that they haven't yet severed from it.
The bottom line as to its version numbers is because needed to distinguish their Android versions apart from the Google versions to prevent any conflicts/confusions/etc... with the Google Version numbers.
This is just an abridged version of the story and, if you would like, try checking out the full stories on the following links.

"N" is the 14th letter in the English alphabet and "O" is the 15th and if Lineage called them ANYTHING that one of the world's largest corporations with the deepest financial pockets and best hired gun attorneys one can possibly imagine could latch onto as the basis to litigate them out of existence in the blink of an eye ...... any more questions ?

Wow, never thought of it like that! That's totally cool.
Thanks for sharing.
I guess we are done for security updates. It has been right at 2 years. Sad thing is, this is still a great little phone. I am not in the mood to root and tinker with issues. I wished there was a stable ROM out there to use. I wished that LineageOS would pick this little jewel up. Oh, well. It has been a good 2 years of a small, but very informative community of X Compact users.
I am still searching for a small phone replacement since Sony does not make small phones anymore. Post here if you have any recommendations.
Cheers!

I feel you. I think I've said it before on this forum, but I really don't get why there isn't a lineageos build for this phone. Lots of sony xperia phones have official lineageos builds and there even is an unofficial build for this device (so it's not exactly impossible to build).
That being said, I generally prefer omnirom and luckily they are supporting this device. I've been on omnirom 8.1 for ages and haven't encountered a bug yet, so imho it can definitely be considered stable. Right now I'm using a self-built omnirom 9.0 (security patch level 5 november 2018) as a daily driver and for a pre-official build it is already pretty stable. Sony's 'Pie' software binaries (which thankfully they still provide) are still in beta, so coupled with the omnirom team efforts the stability will only increase.
Bottom line for smartphone manufacturers: Just provide what is needed for the open source community to flourish, it'll cost you next to nothing and will pay you back in goodwill many times over.
Next upcoming problem is the lack of support for the Project Treble in Xperia X series devices which at least may cause significant delay in releasing ROMs based the newer Android versions or in the worst case might result in stopping their development as the successor - XZ1 series - supports it. I hope developers will follow the Z5 series path as there already is LineageOS for these. And hopefully some Xiaomi devices path as there are devices which now have unofficial support of the Project Treble.
BTW, we should also thank to the Google for an unwise cycle of releasing new Android version every year which accelerates fragmentation significantly as its main reason seems to be to persuade people to buy newer devices with latest version of Andoid OS on board.

I suppose more recent Sony smartphones have been sold in significantly lower quantities than older ones (I read many times about Sony's smartphones poor sales numbers) and it might be the reason of a smaller community gathered around those newer devices.
Software security updates stopped?
If Sony stops providing software updates after 2y, it means those of us with a Sony Xperia X Compact (F5321) are unable to add Work e-mail accounts as the Microsoft Intune app requires an Android software update dated May 2019.
This silly policy by Sony is preventing me from adding my work O365 account to the device and means I am very unlikely to buy another Sony mobile phone ever again as its usable life is 2 years max. I am actually quite raging because I like the phone -this is beyond stupid from Sony.

This device has pretty lackluster support even in the dev community as well. All it's really got going for it atm but fortunately we have Lineage 17.1 and Project Treble. I recommend flashing a new rom if you don't want to switch phones.
