Dear All,
I am struggling to introduce different firmware to my GT-i9500CHN.
I have got from China original Samsung retailer. (went thru several checks it is genuine GT-i9500)
I have tried to put 'European' firmware as Chinese one is 'google-less' and has only Samsung Chinese IME. (I am living in the UK)
My current baseband version is I9500ZCUCMF3 and handset is not accepting any other (getting 'soft brick' via ODIN), so I am able to go back only to I9500ZCUCMF3.
My Kernel version is: 3.4.5-868190 [email protected] #1, Mon Jul 1 20:14:37 KST 2013
Has anyone have experience with changing that firmware?
Thank you for your support.
Flash it 5 file in Odin.

Terazoido,
Thank you for the hint. I will try to download it tonight and flash it with ODIN 3.09.

Flash a recovery via ODIN, CWM or TWRP. Then you could flash non-stock ROM. Leave the baseband alone....

I have finally managed to download rar. It contains:
1.adonis_3g.pit
2.BOOTLOADER_I9500ZSUBMF6_927537_REV00_user_low_sh ip.tar.md5
3.CODE_I9500ZSUBMF6_927537_REV00_user_low_ship.tar .md5
4.MODEM_I9500XXUBMF8_REV01_CL1331687_SIGNED.tar.md 5
5.CSC_OZS_I9500OZSBMF6_927537_REV00_user_low_ship.tar.md5
I have tried to flash 3.CODE_I9500ZSUBMF6_927537_REV00_user_low_ship.tar .md5 and failed & soft brick.
Fortunately I am able to go back to 3. I9500ZCUCMG1_I9500CHNCMG1_I9500ZCUCMF3_HOME.tar.md5.
I am just wondering what can happened if I fail to flash it with all 5 above files. Can I come back to 3. I9500ZCUCMG1_I9500CHNCMG1_I9500ZCUCMF3_HOME.tar.md5 ? Or I would need to flash 5 original files (which I don't have..)
Thank you

It is the MODEM file. As I said, leave the baseband alone... Those files you downloaded are for i9500 HK version, but you are holding China Mainland version. They might have minor difference.
Download latest twrp.tar file and flash using Odin in the PDA tab.
Press Volume UP + Home immediately after reboot, you should see TWRP UI if succeed.

Dear Cellegg,
Thank you for advice. Do I need to be rooted for that operation?
Thank you

Hi Cellegg,
I have found below instruction to install TWRP:
http://galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s4-using-twrp-method/
at the end of it, it is mentioned to root it with SuperSU zip
What do you think about it?
I am not sure if can do it with my Kernel. How to check if I don't have: SetUID restriction on the kernel ?
Thank you for your support

Following that instruction would work. Yes, you need flash SuperSU to root your phone.
But if you want to flash other non-stock rom, just ignore that step, most of non-stock rom already includes SuperSU.
I haven't heard of any China Mainland version cellphone encountered SetUID restriction issue.

Dear Cellegg,
I have managed to install TWRP and installed SuperSU v1.51 (0.91 was unable to update the binaries..)
Everything seems to be running fine (I did full backup to SD). However I am not sure how to proceed now...
I would like to have google apps and English IME. Shall I flash some custom ROM? What do you advise?
Thank you,

Custom Rom would be better.
Try OMEGA rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232887
Presume you know how to use TWRP, backup all your stuff and full wipe (cache, delvik cache, rom, data)

Dear Cellegg,
I have tried to flash OMEGA as advised, but unsuccesful. I have read on the OMEGA thread, that:
Wipe cache partition automatic before roms installation
Wipe Dalvik Cache automatic during installation
Wipe preload partition automatic before roms installation
Wipe System automatic before roms installation
is included, so I didn't proceed with wipe (I have seen it being wiped while flashing)
I have also flashed XXUBMG9 at the beginning as advised on OMEGA thread.
After reboot, I have got standard white 'Samsung logo GT-i9500' and after that nothing happened --> black screen...
I was able to restore via TWRP to start point.
Any ideas?
thank you

Wipe procedure during OMEGA installation somehow would not fully remove stock files...you have to use TWRP's wipe to do that.
1) Advanced Wipe in TWRP (data, system, cache, delivk cache.)
2) flash OMEGA rom
One more thing, if you encounter WIFI or Bluetooth issue, try to flash different kernel, Adam kernel.

Hi Cellegg,
Thank you for hints.
I have followed OMEGA's instruction about modem:
'Flash the new modem XXUBMG9 before flashing Omega v12, get it from here or from Omega Files free and Pro. If you did not flash the new modem first then you may loose your modem. If this happens flash XXUBMG9 modem to restore it'
What do you think about it?
I will try with Advance WIpe in TWRP as next.
[edit] Unfortunately same result after flashing modem XXUBMG9 and Omega v12 rom - black screen... no idea why?!
Any ideas?
[edit2] I have checked information about baseband/modem in 'About device' and it is showing: I9500XXUBMG9
Thanks

It seems you had successfully flashed the MODEM/baseband, if I9500XXUBMG9 showed in 'About Device'
I would say try again...or try other Recovery and Roms...
Anyway, if all above failed..here it is the Google apps package: http://www.vdisk.cn/down/index/13790672 (hit "智能线路下载" to download)
You must root your phone before flashing it.

Hi Cellegg,
Thank you for your advices.
Finally I have managed to make it works with Arrow 6.0 Custom ROM.
Everything seems to be running fine and it is a huge release after so many days...
Once again thanks for your comments and ideas.
To all members: if you have similar phone (GT-i9500CHN) or other and I would be able to help somehow, please ask the question - I am happy to support as much as I can.
ODIN firmware vs. clean wipe & ROM flash... what's the difference?
I realize the firmware flash will put the modem on the phone also (most ROM's won't).
But is there anything else an ODIN firmware flash will do that a simple clean wipe/format and ROM flash won't do to fix random issues?
Assuming the firmware was stock rooted firmware and the ROM was stock rooted ROM.
Nooobody?!
Can't think of anything off the top of my head. It'll install the default recovery and whatever modem, beyond that I can't think of anything. Boot loader can be changed as well depending on the image.
ODIN might also reset some low level values like proximity sensor values, etc. I really don't know for sure though.

It really depends what's in the odin package. Some con come with bootloaders, modems, stock 3e recovery. Some odin packages will not have bootloaders in them. A will almost always flash the boot.img, system, and apps. It won't have the modem, recovery, or bootlader. At least on the GS3 or GS4. On the Captivate the recovery was included with kernels and roms...so you flashed a new recovery with every rom.

have you updated the baseband?
maybe need to flash NON-HLOS (Wifi Fix). This is the LTE modem and should match the installed baseband otherwise wifi and sound problems may occur.

I just had the same problem as you. After a lot of reading, this is how I solved it:
1) Wipe data/cache and re-flash the original stock rom (everything back to day 1 from new)
2) Donwload and flash the modem for the new ROM you want in the phone slot
3) Flash the same new modem again, but uncheck "auto reboot". Once done, manually turn off the phone
4) Flash the new modem a 3rd time with "auto reboot" checked again. In settings > about device, the boot loader should now be updated.
5) Flash the CWD recovery (or custom recovery of choice)
6) Flash the new ROM
DONE
I have flashed the modem successfully, now the baseband has been updated. Then I reflashed the new ROM using ODIN. But still the wifi doesn't work.
I have questions about firmware/modem flashing.
1) I've tried both stable and beta, but I'm uncertain which version I'm on now. How do I get to that info?
2) Can I move back and forth between firmware/modem versions just by flashing them one over the other, or is there a step-by-step process, i.e. flash ROM, flash firmware/modem, flash kernel.
3) Do I need to wipe anything when flashing firmware, davik/cache, system?

1. You can't get that info from anywhere. Just re-flash the firmware that you want and remember which one is it.
2. Yes, a simple flash will overwrite the existing firmware. There are no other steps required.
3. Not needed.
Thank you! I thought that was the case but couldn't find the firmware flash process detailed anywhere.
