[Q] GT-i9500CHN - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear All,
I am struggling to introduce different firmware to my GT-i9500CHN.
I have got from China original Samsung retailer. (went thru several checks it is genuine GT-i9500)
I have tried to put 'European' firmware as Chinese one is 'google-less' and has only Samsung Chinese IME. (I am living in the UK)
My current baseband version is I9500ZCUCMF3 and handset is not accepting any other (getting 'soft brick' via ODIN), so I am able to go back only to I9500ZCUCMF3.
My Kernel version is: 3.4.5-868190 [email protected] #1, Mon Jul 1 20:14:37 KST 2013
Has anyone have experience with changing that firmware?
Thank you for your support.

Flash it 5 file in Odin.

download password(提取密码):keh6
rar password:www.52samsung.com
Change to HongKong edition.Try it.

Terazoido,
Thank you for the hint. I will try to download it tonight and flash it with ODIN 3.09.
Regards

Flash a recovery via ODIN, CWM or TWRP. Then you could flash non-stock ROM. Leave the baseband alone....

I have finally managed to download rar. It contains:
1.adonis_3g.pit
2.BOOTLOADER_I9500ZSUBMF6_927537_REV00_user_low_sh ip.tar.md5
3.CODE_I9500ZSUBMF6_927537_REV00_user_low_ship.tar .md5
4.MODEM_I9500XXUBMF8_REV01_CL1331687_SIGNED.tar.md 5
5.CSC_OZS_I9500OZSBMF6_927537_REV00_user_low_ship.tar.md5
I have tried to flash 3.CODE_I9500ZSUBMF6_927537_REV00_user_low_ship.tar .md5 and failed & soft brick.
Fortunately I am able to go back to 3. I9500ZCUCMG1_I9500CHNCMG1_I9500ZCUCMF3_HOME.tar.md5.
I am just wondering what can happened if I fail to flash it with all 5 above files. Can I come back to 3. I9500ZCUCMG1_I9500CHNCMG1_I9500ZCUCMF3_HOME.tar.md5 ? Or I would need to flash 5 original files (which I don't have..)
Thank you

Which file contains baseband? (Is it the same what Kernel is?)
Thank you[/QUOTE]
It is the MODEM file. As I said, leave the baseband alone... Those files you downloaded are for i9500 HK version, but you are holding China Mainland version. They might have minor difference.
Download latest twrp.tar file and flash using Odin in the PDA tab.
Press Volume UP + Home immediately after reboot, you should see TWRP UI if succeed.

Hi Cellegg,
I have found below instruction to install TWRP:
http://galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s4-using-twrp-method/
at the end of it, it is mentioned to root it with SuperSU zip
What do you think about it?
I am not sure if can do it with my Kernel. How to check if I don't have: SetUID restriction on the kernel ?
Thank you for your support

Following that instruction would work. Yes, you need flash SuperSU to root your phone.
But if you want to flash other non-stock rom, just ignore that step, most of non-stock rom already includes SuperSU.
I haven't heard of any China Mainland version cellphone encountered SetUID restriction issue.

Dear Cellegg,
I have managed to install TWRP and installed SuperSU v1.51 (0.91 was unable to update the binaries..)
Everything seems to be running fine (I did full backup to SD). However I am not sure how to proceed now...
I would like to have google apps and English IME. Shall I flash some custom ROM? What do you advise?
Thank you,

Custom Rom would be better.
Try OMEGA rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232887
Presume you know how to use TWRP, backup all your stuff and full wipe (cache, delvik cache, rom, data)

Dear Cellegg,
I have tried to flash OMEGA as advised, but unsuccesful. I have read on the OMEGA thread, that:
Wipe cache partition automatic before roms installation
Wipe Dalvik Cache automatic during installation
Wipe preload partition automatic before roms installation
Wipe System automatic before roms installation
is included, so I didn't proceed with wipe (I have seen it being wiped while flashing)
I have also flashed XXUBMG9 at the beginning as advised on OMEGA thread.
After reboot, I have got standard white 'Samsung logo GT-i9500' and after that nothing happened --> black screen...
I was able to restore via TWRP to start point.
Any ideas?
thank you

Wipe procedure during OMEGA installation somehow would not fully remove stock files...you have to use TWRP's wipe to do that.
1) Advanced Wipe in TWRP (data, system, cache, delivk cache.)
2) flash OMEGA rom
One more thing, if you encounter WIFI or Bluetooth issue, try to flash different kernel, Adam kernel.

Hi Cellegg,
Thank you for hints.
I have followed OMEGA's instruction about modem:
'Flash the new modem XXUBMG9 before flashing Omega v12, get it from here or from Omega Files free and Pro. If you did not flash the new modem first then you may loose your modem. If this happens flash XXUBMG9 modem to restore it'
What do you think about it?
I will try with Advance WIpe in TWRP as next.
[edit] Unfortunately same result after flashing modem XXUBMG9 and Omega v12 rom - black screen... no idea why?!
Any ideas?
[edit2] I have checked information about baseband/modem in 'About device' and it is showing: I9500XXUBMG9
Thanks

It seems you had successfully flashed the MODEM/baseband, if I9500XXUBMG9 showed in 'About Device'
I would say try again...or try other Recovery and Roms...
Anyway, if all above failed..here it is the Google apps package: http://www.vdisk.cn/down/index/13790672 (hit "智能线路下载" to download)
You must root your phone before flashing it.

Hi Cellegg,
Thank you for your advices.
Finally I have managed to make it works with Arrow 6.0 Custom ROM.
Everything seems to be running fine and it is a huge release after so many days...
Once again thanks for your comments and ideas.
To all members: if you have similar phone (GT-i9500CHN) or other and I would be able to help somehow, please ask the question - I am happy to support as much as I can.

[SOLUTION] Hong Kong 16GB stuck after 4.4.2 update

This is for Hong Kong 16GB N9005 who were stuck on the 'Samsung Galaxy Note 3' screen after getting a 'Invalid: ext4 image' or 'Repartioning failed' errors while installing 4.4.2 OFFICIAL (Single File ROM) via Odin.
Many Thanks to @Volrath for his/her post in another forum with this solution. I have tried and it worked. I've tried almost every other solution without avail. So, this is probably the only solution available at the time I'm writing this post.
Binary: Custom
Knox: 0x1
Method:
In Odin mode
1. Flash the latest cf-autoroot (Kitkat support) [http://download.chainfire.eu/352/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-hlte-hltexx-smn9005.zip]
2. Flash the latest CWM - 6.0.4.6 (the one that supports KitKat) [http://fs1.d-h.st/download/00094/gb3/n9005-cwm-recovery-6.0.4.6-kitkat(0113).tar]
Download Sweet Rom and place it in ExtSDcard (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2487425)
I tried external sd-card with various format and could not install the ROM. After format my SD Card to FAT32, the ROM can be installed.
On Device
1. Boot in to Recovery mode by Volume up + Home + Power
2. Wipe Factory reset / Dalvik Cache
3. Format /System (under "mount and storage" menu) [IMPORTANT STEP]
4. Install Rom from SD Card
5. Say your prayer. You'll need it. (The installation could take sometimes. If the device screen shows Samsung boot animation, you're half way there)
Thanks again @Volrath!

Tripped Knox and Binary Custom. That's a shame, though. Hoping there'll be a way to reset all that by the time I sell my phone in a year!
Thanks again.
Warm regards,
R

I guess it depends on the phone itself, but for mine it just does not work. No matter how many times i download/install this rom and change microsd card and safely removing the microsd card making sure the file is intact it will just crash on samsung setup see picture attached mine. Its basically a paperweight this point unless they will release 4.4.2 firmware HK thats compatible to my device.
And yes i have tried every factory wipe that you can think of...
Im going to try Jackaway 4.4.2 firmware and see how it goes...

the same problem.
how i flash 2 files in odin?
1. Flash the latest cf-autoroot (Kitkat support) [http://download.chainfire.eu/352/CF-...x-smn9005.zip]

I was having the same problem, keeps on getting Samsung Setupwizard has stopped dialog.
I have wipe data/cache etc and flash the Sweet Rom many times but still gets the same error.
THEN, I used Odin to flash the 4.4.2 bootloader from here, as mentioned in Sweet Rom thread in the first post regarding needing the 4.4.2 bootloader for Sweet Rom, and tada, its works without the setupwizard has stopped error.
I dont know how and why it helped but it fixed my problem.
So basically, I follow every step rinuvimal said in the first post of this thread, encountered the setupwizard error, shut off the phone, goes into download mode, use Odin to flash the 4.4.2 bootloader, the phone restarts and the error is gone!
Mine was even stranger.
I got stuck after trying to install KitKat.
Then, I flash only "cf-autoroot" the first one. After it was flashed, phone booted up just fine.
I just got an Samsung Keyboard has stopped. Now working on it.
Thanks for a tip.

Well i kind of know the rules of XDA.
But here's the catch, i have tried that method mentioned above.
Downloaded the .tar file and flashed via Odin. And now my phone is stuck on Samsung logo forever.
That's why posted here.

Hey
You are only flashing a kernel...not a full 4.4.2 original image.
And that's why you're stock on the boot logo.

stock 5.0.1 roms mega mirrors http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...06-lolipop-official-samsung-firmware-t3023794 thanks to @Mar10
and tar files from 4.4.2 open nordic countries thanks to @DeHAWK

take the battery out wait 5-10 secs and enter to download mode to avoid modem issues.
its not recomendable but if you have a backup of a pit file for your phone select it and thick re-partition, this is dangerous but may help with bootloop only if flashing the firmware with no repartition work, repartition with out a pit file may brick your device.

One more noob question..
I did a back up of my touchwiz before converting to CM.
And i got the back up file as normal file folder instead a zip file.
I wonder if there is a way to restore it.
I already tried zipping it and restoring from philz recovery...but it says bad file.

you´re welcome.
did you do the backup from philz recovery? i never did a backup from recovery, only with titanium, so i really dont know, but to restore a backup needs to be done from the same source that the backup was created. for the screen shots looks like a CWM recovery backup good luck.

sLIGHTLY RE-eDIT OF PREVIOUS POST :
yes its a cwm backup file created with philz..
And i was able to restore it via the recovery under restore oiption.
but after the first samsung screen (samsung galaxy s4) and a blue T logo, it gets struck on the third screen with only samsung written on it with a solid blue led.
(( what the heck am i doing wrong.
Anyway i flashed the full image with odin..(taken from your link).
And back to touchwiz again.
Thanks a lot.
One more thing is, it changed my baseband version a bit.
Build number : I9506XXUCNJ1
bASEBAND vERSION : I9506XXUCNF3
IS THAT A PROBLEM ?
BEST REGARDS.

Sorry to bother you again.
But i am facing a new kinda problem now with custom recoveries.
After flashing NEE-I9506XXUCNJ1-20141114075501 yesterday it got auto updated to 5.0.1 lollipop .
Now i am stuck with stock recovery.
Tried to flash philz 6.x.x.x as before with odin. The odin process completes itself and reboots the phone.
But when i try to get into recovery still its booting in stock recovery.
Any solution on how can i flash custom recovery on this ?
Additional info
Baseband version : I9506XXUDOA6
bUILD NUMBER : LRX22C. I9506XXUDOA6
Flash your Favorite Custom Recovery with Odin 3.xx and put it to AP. Check that Auto Reboot isn't marked. After successful flashing your Phone won't to reboot. USB Cable out and put your Battery out and wait few seconds. Put your Battery in and reboot it to Recovery. The Stock Recovery can't now overwrite the Custom Recovery.

in lollipop i used TWRP recovery (TWRP_2.8.4.0_ks01lte_20150207.tar.md5)https://www.mediafire.com/folder/p3rwwfm7xn76x/TWRP flashed with odin 1.85 no problems.
but after rooting with cf autoroot http://download.chainfire.eu/502/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-ks01lte-ks01ltexx-gti9506.zip( extract and flash with odin in pda) because cf autorrot flash stock recovery after rooting.
Important after rooting flash immediately custom recovery, if you boot in stock recovery after root all apps will force close and you will need to wipe data (stock recovery wipe data will delete internal memory as well), so do not boot in stock recovery.

I wouldnt flash firmware that "might" work on your device or is build for another rom.... you should try reinstalling drivers and flash stock rom thru odin, if it wont work try twrp 3.0.0 if it detects your storage....

Go into TWRP, choose wipe, then choose the advanced wipe option. Wipe system, data, cache, and dalvik. Make sure you have a ROM to flash after you do so, this will remove the operating system
Has this guy solved? Since he can boot into twrp where it should be the problem? I ve seen some posts and some step is missing... if twrp says 0mb storage, are u sure u selected the right storage?
thanks for helping.
TWRP recently couldn't access any storage on device and recently not coming up by pressing power + volume up + home
i tried to flash TWRP again but nothing changed.

Oh dear ! Thats not a good sign.your motherboard is acting crazy.try flash twrp again in odin and try to flash rom without wipe cache or dalvik cache (just wipe system) and flash rom.
If same error ( invalid argument) shows again then in twrp advance wipe there is repair tab at bottom in twrp try to repair cache partition and try again.

Live demo units are so limited and so far from being a real phones, your phone model is i9505X, so it's not i9505 and so, you won't be able to flash custom ROM on it.

I read your message very well, just "i9505 demo" seems complicating, as the live demo version of the i9505 is the i9505X that's all what i was saying, so if you're sure you have a i9505 phone, then it's not demo.
Back to your problem:
1-what recovery are you using? If TWRP then what version?
2-what rom did you try to flash? And what did you wipe before flashing?

Ok, what TWRP are you using? you should flash android 6 or 7 with the latest TWRP 3, not with an older version, also for stock rom you should download it from a trusted site like sammobile.com, or samsung-firmware.org, other than those i wouldn't recommend, and use Odin 3.07 or 3.09, those versions works for everyone.

OK, did you format system partition as ext4 in TWRP?, f2fs may have problems with system partition.

In advanced wipe menu, Mark the system partition, then press the button at the bottom that says "repair or change file system", and choose EXT4 then format the system, and see if that works, if it didn't work, try doing the same for /data and /cache partitions.

OK, last suggestion is, download the most latest firmware for your phone from sammobile.com and flash it with Odin, and then try the twrp flashing thing again.
Maybe you have an old bootloader.
