[Q] ODIN firmware vs. clean wipe & ROM flash... what's the difference? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

ODIN firmware vs. clean wipe & ROM flash... what's the difference?
I realize the firmware flash will put the modem on the phone also (most ROM's won't).
But is there anything else an ODIN firmware flash will do that a simple clean wipe/format and ROM flash won't do to fix random issues?
Assuming the firmware was stock rooted firmware and the ROM was stock rooted ROM.

Nooobody?!

Can't think of anything off the top of my head. It'll install the default recovery and whatever modem, beyond that I can't think of anything. Boot loader can be changed as well depending on the image.

ODIN might also reset some low level values like proximity sensor values, etc. I really don't know for sure though.

It really depends what's in the odin package. Some con come with bootloaders, modems, stock 3e recovery. Some odin packages will not have bootloaders in them. A will almost always flash the boot.img, system, and apps. It won't have the modem, recovery, or bootlader. At least on the GS3 or GS4. On the Captivate the recovery was included with kernels and roms...so you flashed a new recovery with every rom.

Best recovery option for rooted stock S4?

I have an i9505 running stock Android 4.2.2 (JDQ39.I9505XXUBMF8) - rooted using CF-Auto-Root (jflte-jfltexx-gti9505 IIRC). My battery life is poor, and I was hoping that a ROM upgrade to 4.3 would help, but haven't flashed a ROM for a while. I was wondering if anyone could answer the following:
- First of all I guess I need to flash a recovery using Odin? Would Philz Touch Recovery be the best option, or is there a basic, more reliable Recovery mod?
- If I want to retain warranty, would it be best to flash a non-Knox ROM such as Omega v18? (which I believe leaves the original bootloader intact?)
- How can I tell whether or not I need to flash a new modem?
Is there anything else I should be careful/aware of when flashing the Recovery mod and ROM?

1. You can use either Philz recovery or twrp
2. If you want to retain a warranty You need to flash this http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23050663588004454 (Its a 4.2.2 pre-rooted rom) then download Triangle away to reset the binary and sent it for repair incase.
3. If you flash a Custom rom Omega, Golden, Echo, etc. you need to Flash a new 4.3 based modem to fix any data drop issues.
4. Never flash any 4.3 stock firmware from samsung via odin. =Newbootloader = Knox void warranty

Thanks for that. Do I flash the modem using Odin AFTER flashing the new ROM, or before flashing the ROM?

Actually it doesnt matter or you can just flash the modem and then the custom rom you want (Make sure to full wipe when your flashing any rom via recovery )and here's a modem http://www.mediafire.com/download/48r0rgqv25s8968/GSM_Modem_XXUEMFK_and_LTE_Modem_XXUBMH1.rar, download then extract and flash it via odin by selecting phone Make sure to turn of your phone manually before flashing via odin. Once your done check if your baseband version change into MKE . Have a nice day.

Do i have to update bootloader and modem to flash new roms? is it safe to flash TWRP through odin?
if Yes,tell me how to flash modem bootloader using odin.
Flashing a modem and bootloader is not necessary. Unless you have signal issues.
TWRP can be flashed with Odin. For me it didn't work, so I had to flash TWRP another way. Good luck
Uncheck auto-reboot before flashing the recovery in Odin and it will work.
And after twrp flashing, i can Flash my desired roms?

Yes. If you want CyanogenMod. Touchwiz roms can be flashed with Odin if that's what you're looking for.

[ODIN) [All-in-One] [OB7-Stock-Firmware] [Kernel,Boot,Recovery,Modem,Carrier]

I made these odin flashable firmwares for those who need them. This is only the stock firmware for Lollipop 5.01 build OB7. (NO system or data partitions) If you need to flash the stock OB7 firmwares then this will do that for you. This will not wipe your system or data.
Once you flash the "OB7-FW.tar.md5" you must reroot and flash a custom recovery if you want to flash custom roms etc. Simply odin flash cf-auto-root and the latest recovery by TWRP and you'll be back in business.
The OB7-modem.tar.md5 requires no extra steps... it's just the modem.
I have tested these packages on my Note 4 running OB7 firmware. Note: If you are on OE1 firmware, you will NOT be able to flash this OB7 firmware successfully due to new security measures in the OE1 bootloader.
OB7-FW.tar.md5 This tar package includes all of the stock OB7 firmware including kernel, modem, recovery, bootloader, etc. Please flash this in odin on your PC ONLY!
OB7-modem.tar.md5 This tar package includes only the modem and HLOS patch. Can be flashed with odin on your pc and also mobile odin.
Gonna try

ive been searching but can you help me put stock 0e1 recovery back on my phone i forgot to factory data reset after i updated to 0e1 and rerooted and now my phone is super buggy and i think its because i didnt wipe on stock recovery which usually fixes my problems. thanks if you can help or not. ive wiped on twrp of course but my stock rooted 0e1 rom just isnt right idk but like i said the stock recovery to me really wipes evrything. ive tried aosp roms but there even more buggy can you please help thanks
No one has it yet
Right. There is no official tar ball available for OE1 firmware. OTA is the only way right now and nobody has pulled and uploaded the update zip for OE1. Im afraid you're gonna have to try the OB7 official rom tar or else you're stuck until a tar pops up somewhere. And that may not happen for OE1.

Thanks for the report. Which software version are you currently on? Extension OB7 or OE1 ??? You must be on OE1 because it flashed successfully on my OB7 software. I will upload another version for you to test.
Yes, I am on OE1, I will gladly test for you. Just keep me posted.
So just to clarify, if I am on KK, I can ODIN this then cf auto root then TWRP? And don't take the update to OE1 because it's not worth it?

Ok, don't mess with this, it's for a different purpose. Read the OP in @tx_dbs_tx 's hybrid X 2.2 rom thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2956667
Read the OP carefully as there is a VERY specific procedure (it's easy) you MUST follow to move up to lollipop.
Stock tar in the OP here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3056478
If you'd rather have a stock rom instead of hybrid x download the stock tar and follow tx's instructions to the T in his Hybrid-X OP before flashing it or any lollipop based rom.
Remember, you MUST flash the stock OB7 tar BEFORE flashing any lollipop rom.
EDIT: If you decide to go stock, do not take the ota. Once you cf-auto-root & odin twrp you won't have to worry about it anymore. The same with Hybrid-X. Once you flash that no more OTA worries.
Did u find the hidden image ??
I'm not going to pursue the OE1 secured bootloader thing. We will have to wait for an official tar ball and rebuild roms from it. Until then I'm staying on my OB7 rom.
I dont quit but thanks for your efforts

Meh sourcecode is out

N910C EFS partition is ?corrupted? Not a single ROM boots. In dire need of help.

Everything was fine until I flashed CM13 unofficial.
Now, my bootloader is updated to 6.0 (COJ5 something or COH4), I can't revert to something prior to that: odin fails at sboot.bin NAND write start fail.
-While this issue has occured to many others than me, I'm the only one who can't even boot into CM13 or AOSP based ROMs, even after pushing different variants of ROMs several times through ADB, bootloops are still persistent.
-Any other 5.1.1 Official ROM that's not COJ5 or COH4 fails to flash at odin. COJ5/COH4 ROMS flash succesfully, but the phone doesn't boot past the samsung text.
-I have tried flashing various COH4 ROMS along with their AP,BL,CSC etc, everything flashes succesfully apart from the bootloader file, and after that it's the same samsung text brick. I couldn't find the PIT files (bootloader csc n such) for COJ5..
Is there a place I can find a backed up EFS partion ?file? and restore it myself? Would this get me out of the****hole i'm currently in?
What can I do about this...

Yea i came across this, but there was one tiny problem
how on earth am i supposed to root, get busybox, and apply usb debugging on my phone while it has no functional ROM?
and how on earth am i supposed to transfer a backup from my ROMless phone?
Do you have a pit file for repartition
If so, access twrp , wipe everything including your internal storage. Then boot into download mode.
In the computer, load the pit file and your stock coj5 into Odin 3.10 , tick "repartition" and "Nand Erase All"then click start.
Back to your phone - which now should be boot looping - access the stock recovery and wipe. Root - try using a different root method like chainfire's Odin autoroot - then twrp ur phone. Flash cm13 then start running the steps I threaded ( [fix] note 4 exynos bootloop problem ...... )
PM me for what you get

Galaxy s4 att stuck on screen with costum and a padlock

Okay, here is the deal. I was trying to install a costum rom on my att galaxy s4. What I did was I rooted it using king root and tried to flash a rom through rom toolbox, but I believe it was just going to take me to my recovery. After that the screen got stuck on the costum screen with the padlock, and only seems to turn on with a charger plugged into it. I am on 5.0.1 lollipop and have managed to flash the original recovery, but any stock rom I try to flash using Odin fails by saying complete thread failed or something like that, and says on my phone binary 1 or something like that. I really need help on where to start.
Thanks
What is the exact Odin error?
AT&T never released a full firmware for flashing via Odin beyond 4.1.2. Look here for a possible solution: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...-to-update-to-i337oc3-5-0-1-keeproot-t3075814
Once the phone is running a 4.3 or higher bootloader, the bootloader is locked and custom ROMs can't be installed unless the custom ROM is based on a stock ROM.
There's an ODIN flashable Android 4.2.2 MDL bootloader tar file out there somewhere too.
If the bootloader is locked, and it sounds like it is since it's running 5.01, Odin will not be able to flash a 4.2.2 ROM or bootloader.

Are there any other options, or should I just give up on it?
Look at this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...-to-update-to-i337oc3-5-0-1-keeproot-t3075814.
Pay attention to this part of the post which may help:
Notes:
1. The above process will not affect your Knox Warranty Flag.
2. The process will update your Modem, Non-hlos, System, Kernel, and Stock Recovery.
3. No need to wipe prior to flashing! The ROM will automatically perform a factory data reset.
4. If you are not already rooted (or to unbrick) you must first flash the I337UCUFNB1_Rootable_Full_Odin.tar (use Odin's PDA slot (AP in Odin v3.09+), root with Towelroot, then proceed with the above process.
5. To learn more about FlashFire's capabilities on locked bootloader devices see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...10&postcount=2
