I have the newest firmware update and I just started having issues with messaging. When I use the stock messaging app If I try to attach a photo I get a force close message. When I receive one It will not download. I have used the google messenger and I cannot receive or send it just says it cant send and cant download. Then in hangouts is I use sms I can send and receive in a group message which I have mms turned on for so group mms works fine if I send a photo is goes through but says "Cannot be store" but I also am unable to download incoming photos. I did a factory restore and that actually made my led star working it used to only work for calls. But im still having the same problem Ive been through the prl and profile update I'm at a loss here and dont know what to do. If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated,
Try wiping out your external sdcard. My wife had an issue where her images were being duplicated by the thousands and was killing space. The lack of space resulted in force closes and the entire phone becoming unstable. What made it even more strange was that these "duplicated" images were nowhere to be found on either her internal or external after viewing all the folders with ES File Explorer and most of the duplicates showed up in the gallery as blank images. Her external sdcard had stuff on it from her other phones and I believe it caused conflicts on the Sharp device. I pulled everything from her sdcard onto my laptop then placed her sdcard into my HTC One SV and used aparted (root required) to wipe and reformat the entire sdcard to fat32. She hasn't had an issue since. I told her to not put the stuff back onto her sdcard except for small stuff like pictures, and music. Anything else was to be left alone since we couldn't narrow down the exact culprit.
I'm having the same problem! No SD card for me.

I will try this tonight that sounds logical my phone is doing the same by duplicating pictures in my music app sometimes it shows doubles as well. Thank you I'll post later if it helps or not. What if I used the SD card slot on my pc and formatted it using command prompt do you think it would work the same?

I do not see why it wouldn't. Aparted is an app you can get from the playstore. Though, some people will be confused when they try to use it given it's gui layout. If you can do it via command-line then kudos for you. Aparted just makes it possible to do it on the phone with root and attempt to make it easier and more friendly. Which it is once you familiarize yourself with it lol. Good luck

When I first had this problem I reset the device twice and used the original sim card that came with the phone. I know it has to be some app not playing nice but I can't find out which one.

well if it's a user app then start deleting them one at a time until the problem stops. If it's a system app then there isn't much you can do at this point since the device is still somewhat locked down.

same issue..recent
Used to work fine..now cant recieve mms...
I was having the same problem also in figured out how to fix it. Go to your dial pad and press ##72786# then press ok. The phone will restart and then take a few minutes to provision your data services. This will not reset any data on your phone but just re-provision the data services on the phone. Somehow the APN settings must have got messed up on our phones when one of the messaging app updates happened. Good luck!
the workaround is to change the lockscreen to 'none' then power the phone off and back on, then put your lock screen back on, weird workaround but it works
I have been having the same issue and tried both methods discussed to no avail. After resetting the provisioning, now I get an error when sending MMS that states "Device not programmed, please wait." I updated both PRL and profile without error and I am now able to place and receive calls and texts and have 3G and 4G data but still cannot send MMS. I really don't want to call customer service. I also cannot roll back messaging app to previous version. I guess another factory reset is in my future.

When you get this error goto settings and click activate this device. This will did your problem..... Unfortunately the workaround I stayed earlier only seems to work until you restart. You then have to do the steps over again.
The only thing that fixes it, and temporarily I might add, is a reset via recovery. My fiancee and I both have had issues with this since we got the phone a little over a month ago. We also lose 4G LTE, continuously dropping to 3G, though we're in a massively covered tri-band 4G LTE area (or so says the networking team at Sprint, who, to get them on the phone, I had to throw out quite a few disparaging tweets and messages to on Twitter and the Sprint forums.) It's a bunch of crap, this phone. My advice: Reset the provisioning, then reset the entire device. It'll work, just try not to reboot the damn thing or you'll have to do it all over again.
I apologize for not posting the update on my findings. I discovered what my issue is, is that I had bluebox launching on startup which was causing the provisioning after reboot failing. So I uninstalled that app and rebooted, the provisioning completed without error and the issue was corrected. I did not have to perform a factory reset to correct it. Thank you all for your input and timely responses.

I've done a lot of searching and left messages on various forums with no results--hoping someone can help. I have a G1 running CM5.08. I gave the phone to my grandson after I got a Nexus One. I did a reset and activated the phone with my sim card, and then finished the setup using his Google account. Then he put in his sim card. Now he can access the net over Wifi with no problem, but he can get to any of the Google apps including Gmail (to keep his contacts updated) or the app market. Is there something else I have to do to get it to work, or is my grandson SOL without a data plan. Thanks!
First make sure ur wifi is connected
go into settings then accounts and sync, make sure everything is checked on...
including the Google account itself is green (on) and not gray (off)
press on the google account and check all the boxes (in case they weren't checked off) --- if there not there
Restart the phone,
and try these steps again
remember with wifi on
hope this helps

Thanks but that was a no-go. I just get a sync error on gmail. When I try to access the market. the screen opens and then immediately closes back to the home screen.

I just did this with my wifes phone. She got a G1 from her brother but we dont need or want to pay for 2 data plans especially that she is always home so as long as your G1 is rooted here are the steps, oh and by the way this has worked on 1.5, 1.6, 2.1 and now 2.2 she wanted to try each flavor of android before she made up her mind on which one to actually use, and you can do this with his sim card in the G1, so the steps right:
1. Reboot into recovery
2. Wipe All
3. Repart SDCard or Repair EXT
4. Flash Rom and Gapps if needed
5. Reboot....Wait
6. Wait...Wait
7. Ok once the Android shows up click the android
8. Skip Tutorial
9. Skip Sign in
10. Accept the settings it offers you
11. Once at Home Screen, Click menu and settings
12. Click Wireless & Networks
13. Turn on Wifi
14. Connect to Wifi network
15. Click Home and open settings again
16. Now go to accounts and sync
17. Add Account and sign in with his information
18. Now you should be golden and he should be set up with a G1 using Wifi.
Also I would recommend that you download the app APNDroid from the marketplace. open it up un-check all the boxes and then click the 3G/Edge/GPRS button at the top. That will shutdown any and all data coming in from Tmobile so there wont be a chance at all that he could possible receive a data signal and get charged. Thats what I did with my wifes and it works beautifully. She loves her G1 and She gets all the benefits of a G1 without having to pay data. If you run into any other issues with this and you need help let me know. just send me a Private message and maybe we can chat through Gtalk while you are doing it.
Hope it works. Also in the above post, which Rom are you using cause it could be an issue with the rom with the market?
Thanks for the reply. To answer your question, the phone is running Cyanogenmod 5.08.
I'll see if I can get my grandson over here thid weekend and we'll give it a try!

pretty funny pic you have there -- also i hope the grandkid doesnt see this! unless he's passed the NC-17 test. Ha.
grandma(pa) - i just tried Royalknight's move on my other 3 G1's (each running a different flavor of Android) and it worked beautifully, but I had to repartition my cards differently per each flavor. So yeah, that works like a charm but leads to OCD when I am trying to decide which phone to take to work each day.

Yesterday I got the mandatory Sprint Voice to text update. This really upset me as the main reason I rooted my phone was to get rid of the bloat ware. So now I have Sprint nagware to deal with. So today I installed and set up the Google Voice Mail program and it works really nice. So I decided to delete/uninstall the Sprint Voice Mail Program. I used Titanium back up and I deleted the program. Everything still works well so I figured it was gone and that was that. Later I looked in my app drawer and was surprised to see that the icon for the sprint voice mail was still there. So I tried to drag it into the garbage and it wouldn't go. So I go into root explorer and to to system>app and go down the list looking for a sprint widget that I needed to get rid of and didn't find one. I also made sure that the sprint voice mail program wasn't in there either. So I shut off the phone and started it again figuring that the program was still in memory. Well after the reboot the program is still on my phone and now it's acting like it's a brand new account and asking me if I want to set it up. So this comes to my question how do I get rid of the Sprint Voice Mail. I can't find it in my system folder so what's going on? Anyone else experience this???
Help is always appreciated............
Lisa
You can try to mount your system and remove it via Terminal Emulator. Its a pretty simple process with only a few commands if you want to have a go that route.

It's a system app, updatecore.apk or such
Not sure what updatecore.apk is but as you pointed out it's probably a big deal.
Driving home from work today I was thinking about all this and then it dawned on me that I didn't really delete the Sprint Voicemail app as I thought. Earlier I was using Titanium and I was about to delete the Sprint voice mail app when I realized that it was telling me it was going to delete "Data" only. So in reality I only deleted the Voicemail data and not the entire program. You are probably correct that this program is securely nestled within the core of the Android/HTC/Sprint package. Truly amazing as this may be one of those things that you cannot get rid of. Unless it resides in it's own .apk somewhere and I can target that one program I'm very hesitant at this point to go after it. The interesting thing about deleting the data is it seems to have reverted back to the older version. A box came up after I rebooted the phone asking me if I wanted to personalize my voice mail like I did the first time months ago. Plus being it's not technically "working" as it's not personalized the sprint genie can't target me for upgrade as it doesn't know I'm using it. What do you think of that idea?
So here is where I am. I have the Google voice mail working and it's a very cool little program. I have a "Google phone number" that is free and actually works but I don't have to do anything about it as my original phone number works the voice mail just fine. So in reality I may have beaten Sprint to at least a draw on this one................
So to recap, I would say, if you don't want the voice to text sprint app you could go into Applications and delete the "DATA" and then it doesn't know who you are. Just leave the sprint voice mail application in the "unsetup state" and the monster "Mandatory Update" can't find you. You have effectively turned off the sprint voice mail that way and then you can install a third party like Google voice mail or You mail or anything you want.
Give me you take on this idea. I think this is whats going on and this may be the only fix to opt out of the Sprint program.................
For future reference, all system (non-deletable) applications are located in /system/app. Use Root Explorer to go there and delete them. I think what he meant was to delete the Sprint Updater, which I think is Sprint_Updater.apk, also in that folder.

Ok.... I thought it was something VMCore.apk
I don't remember. I deleted it and put it back with the name "Sprint_VM.apk". Doesn't matter what it's named, but I think you're right about "VMCore.apk".
Okay Gentlemen, I have looked for all those files and the only one that is there is the Sprint_Updater.apk. Nothing there that has a VM or VVM or Sprint VVM or anything like that. I am running the .6 version of the Sprint stock 2.1. But I believe I have it disable for now. As I wrote previously by deleting the data file I have essentially not activated the program. If you do come up with the file to delete that would take the VVM with it I will certainly give it a try but there is nothing in the system>app folder that looks even close.
I so appreciate you taking you time to weigh in on this problem.
Thank you.........

See above, delete that to get rid of SVVM for good
Well Gentlemen, again I just went though that directory vary carefully again and there is nothing that even comes close to a VVM or "voice mail" reference at all. It's simply not there.
Have you guys deleted this off your phones before? I guess you all are running some other Rom then the stock one so you haven't faced this mandatory update thing. But the files you are suggesting to remove are not in that directory. As I mentioned the Updater is there in two versions Sprint Updater and just plane Updater.
I don't believe this issue is worth you flashing the stock rom just to check it but that is a real offer and I appreciate that. I admire you guys that flash these phones just for the heck of it. When I have flashed the phone it makes my heart stop.
But thank you for all your responses. I certainly appreciate it........

I don't use stock, and yes I have been able to eliminate VVM.... did you reboot after deleting? Are you looking under system/app?
Yes to both of your questions.
I was thinking the same thing that maybe the program was still resident in the memory so I pulled the battery and everything. It's Sprints FU to the rooting community I guess...............

Still, it should be removable Is it hiding in data/app or data/app-private for some reason?
Okay, you guys aren't going to believe this. But I rebooted the phone and I checked the data/app and the data/app-private. Found nothing in there. Then I went back to the app drawer and the offending program is GONE! I can't find any vestige of it anywhere. So I gather mission accomplished! I don't know what happened as earlier I did the reboot twice and pulled the battery each time and the third time was the charm for some reason. The only file I didn't remove was the Sprint_updater.apk. It's still there. But I have turned off the updates so I shouldn't be bothered by that either..............

No problem! Glad you got it... let me know if you need anything else before I go to my Epic in a week or two
Ok, so my girlfriend is having some problems with her phone and I thought I could swing some of this stuff by the board members for some expertise...
So basically what happened was, she was having some problems with her phone working very slow and getting laggy after compiling way too many text messages on her phone. When she tried to delete some of these text messages the phone wouldn't let her for some weird reason. She then took the phone in to some some sprint store and whoever worked on this thing told her he was going to wipe them directly from the SD card...
Ever since she is having problems where her phone won't even register when someone calls her... no ring, no screen pop-up, but she'll have a missed call notification when she misses the call...
The only other weird thing that I know of is I tried downloading a dj set for her on her phone over a wifi connection (around 55 MB) and it keeps saying download failed... I successfully did this for two other people on their phones as well as my own...
Any help would be appreciated, especially since she will love me to death if I can fix this for her... lol
I would sugest full wipe, that usually fixes lots of issues.
Do backup of her contacts and apps, turn off the phone and start up holding -vol and power bttn. than choose clear storage. That will bring the phone to the original stage like it come out from the box.
no need to backup contacts really they should be stored on her google account
I know she'll ask me this one... will she lose her pictures and stuff???

Pictures are stored on the SD card, so no.
If she has Angry Birds progress she wants to save, there are apps for that and they don't require root.
If she has a ton of apps, that could be slowing her phone down. Have her reinstall apps as she needs them instead of all at once.

Do we know anymore info on this? After rooting the s7 (at&t) everything was fine, accept sending texts through messeges failed. Then this notification came up, I could not remove it from notifications. I did a restart and got stuck in boot loop and had to factory reset. Now, I haven't finished root yet, but still on same rom and this has popped up again.

If I remember correctly that should have to do with video calling but not positive.

i got the stupid devil faced notification too. its also from com.sec.vsimservice . I never had this before but it seems ever since i started using Digits from t-mobile.
I cannot remove it for the life of me and it doesnt matter what rom i am on. I tried clearing cache and data and also blocking notifications but i can still see it when i pull down the notifications. I get it right after i send a chat message using default samsung chat app. BTW im on the note 5 t-mobile.
EDIT: i found out that vsimservice stands for virtual sim service. Well it must be freaken t-mobile Digits beta program... =/ so annoying.
I started getting the devil notification after root on stock every time I get a voicemail. I can clear it like any other notification, it's just annoying.

Mike the file nerd
I'm far from an expert at this but I could tell you how to avoid the problem in the future. I assume that if you have access to directories that contain system preconfig apps you must be running root privilege. Follow down the path to you're particular carrier. In my case I'm technically running on unlocked carrier but for the most part my phone still believes it is AIO(Cricket) ie boot still runs cricket sales code still runs as AIO. ECT. so in my example the file path would be /system/omc/AIO/etc. Inside your carriers file you will find several manifest (.xml) and text (.txt) files somthing along the lines of default_application_order.xml and/or enforcedskippingpackages.txt In my case on my s8 I have both. I haven't personally tried this yet so don't blame me if you try it and turn you phone into an 800$ paperweight (disclaimer) not to mention tampering xml is slightly outside of ethical phone use! That being said I'm of the opinion at least in my own case; if I pay for a device and don't have a contract against it i.e. I outright own the device I may set it up as i please. (Disclaimer) So ethics behind us. If I were to be experiencing this problem I would start by adding the problem pkg (...vsim...apk) whatever yours is called to the enforcedskipping.txt first (as it's slightly less unethical to change a text than a manifest) second find the system app either by an app like sysapp remover or like a real man inside the file system under probably something along the lines of "priv-app" dir or by superuser enabled terminals either abd via your computer/mac/linux whatever you run or by one of the many available terminals in the store of your choice and uninstall your problem apps (i highly suggest making a complete nandroid backup or tar or whatever recovery you use first and also saving a copy of the apk just in case) reboot your phone to recovery clear your cache partition remount the system and reboot. If this hasn't cleared up your problem back to recovery for a factory wipe with said modified files in place and backup ready. Reinstall everything then restore your backup via cmw/twrp/safestrap/bootstrap/odin/lgbridge/etc.etcetc whatever your preferred recovery method is your problem should be fixed. If still not mod the xml instead of the txt and restart from step one. Once again I do not know what dependency/gradles/etc may or may not depend on this what functions you may kill sim cards locked/ruined etc and I'm no professional so if you brickā ??? your ??that's on you for listening to an amateur enthusiast. Now I'm sure one of our wonderful experts here will come along and correct everything I've just said but I'm ok with this I listen to these guys every day I wouldn't know a fraction of the things I do without this wonderful forum and these amazing devs. So I appreciate their criticism as tutoring.

With all that said and out of the way I would like to hear from anyone who has tried this personally or other method for removing this as I myself was led to this particular thread because I was investigating the possibility of what I could change within this particular system app myself. I brick my phone phone twice a day usually so before I crash my very well set up system I usually investigate first the reciprocation/ramifications of adjusting system orientated files/apps.
I updated to Nougat on my verizon s7. I rooted me device as well. For some reason the default text messaging app is saving my messages to the sim card automatically. I looked everywhere and couldnt find a fix for this. Does anyone have any idea of how I can fix this. I really dont want to factory reset my phone. Even if i use a 3rd party app it still comes up. Any info would be helpful thank you in advance

Is your phone memory full? Reading about this problem seems to point to that. I know the SMS file itself with just simple sentences shouldn't take up much space but if your phone's memory is full then it may be trying to save it to the SIM card itself.
Edit:
Just found another possible solution, if the phone has been dropped or experienced some form of shock then it may have knocked the SIM card around. The solution is to power down the phone and remove the SIM. Give it a wipe down and reinsert.
Hopefully one of these solutions works.
