Hopefully this is the right place to post this question. I have installed the latest stable Cyanogen rom, but I'm running into a couple of problems:
1. I cannot send text messages that are more than a few words in length. I suspect this to be because the ROM was written with Sprint's settings, and those settings simply won't work with Cellular South users. Am I right in that there is something that I must change to get my texts to work correctly with Cellular South?
2. Reboots - this one is rather annoying. There is really no rhyme or reason as to why it does this. I can reboot my phone, and it will just sit there, with only SipDroid running in the background (as far as apps that I have added that are running), and my phone will reboot itself every few hours. Now, one thing that did happen was the 2GB MicroSD card that came with the phone died, and I replaced it with a Class 6 8GB MicroSD card. I can't remember if I had the reboot problems prior to that. Any suggestions to help me try to isolate the cause of this?
Thanks everyone.
Bump. Sorry about bumping this thread. Just do not want to have to go back to my stock ROM.
You need the APN settings for cs I think.

Does it by chance reboot when your GPS comes on? Open Maps (or anything you know will cause the GPS to become active) and see what happens. If so try the GPS fix. Used to be able to type ##GPSCLRX#, in Sense but you can't in CM, but there is a fix.
@ranger - it reboots even when the GPS is off (I generally keep it off). Thanks for the suggestion though. Maybe I just need to wipe it and reflash? Couldn't hurt I suppose.
@mrinehart - thanks. I'll do some searching for the "APN Settings" for Cellular South.
What's your total setup with cm6? Like kernel, overclock app and what not? But I believe all cdma users have the 160 character limit with the stock messenging app but if you use handcent or chomp you can bypass this by checking the split thread option in settings. Hopefully after hearing your setup I can help you figure out what's causing the reboots

@ThaSik1 - I was using just the stock messaging app. I didn't realize there was a limitation in the stock messaging app. My setup was just CM6 stable with the gapps installed. The only other apps that I had running constantly were Sipdroid (used for my GV + Gizmo5), and for overclock, I had been using the Overclock Widget. I have restored my stock CS ROM for now - but will applying the CM 6.1 RC1 ROM today.
Let me ask this - my stock CS ROM is 2.1. Would it be worthwhile to copy my APN configuration file from my stock ROM over the CM 6.1 configuration file? Or, would that cause problems?
To my knowledge it shouldn do any harm because the apn file that comes with Cyanogen roms dont have our carrier listed in it anyways. And if it does cause problems, i'll just attach my apn file (which is a modified version of cyanogen's to include Cellular south). But I dont think apn's do much good unless you have picture messaging..dont quote me on that tho lol As for your reboots, i can't see why it would be rebooting like that..If you wiped data and dalvik/cache, then flashed the rom, followed by gapps you should be good. Only thing i can actually see giving you problems would be if you had it overclocked too high since all heroes can't handle the 768 frequency
Flash Deca’s capped kernel to stop the random reboots

I do have picture messaging on my plan - I take it I will need to go ahead and use my a CS APN file. If you don't mind, then yes - please do post the Cellular South APN file that you have. I really do appreciate your help your help. This forum rocks!
I have installed CM6 RC1, and everything seems to work great. I took your advice on not using the stock messaging app and am using Handcent instead. I set it to split the messages. That appears to have fixed the texting problem. Handcent reminds me of my old iPhone texting setup, which I really liked. I have also set the Overclock to max at 691 to make sure that I don't run it too high (or too hot for that matter).
hahahaha no problem honestly i'm just paying it forward my good friend cuz i was once in your shoes lol.. To use the apn file i'm attaching, use an app from the market called "apn backup & restore".. install the app, use a file manager to place the attached file in the folder labeled "ApnBackupRestore", then open the apn app, click delete apns, then click restore apns. You might also need to reboot for it to take affect too lol and sorry to step on your toes in case you already know all of this info But i really hope Cm6.1 works out well for you cuz my Csouth hero is loving it!! haha
P.S. the xml file inside the attached zip is what you wanna place inside the folder lol

Wow, thank you again for your help on this. And no, you certainly weren't stepping on my toes. Thanks for the steps to take - I wasn't sure how to do any of that to be honest and would have been searching this forum for a long while most likely.
So far, CM6.1 has been rocking! I'll let you know how the APN goes. Thanks again!
@ThaSik1 - so far, all of the texts seem to be working great. Thanks again for your help! It really is appreciated.

Thanks. And go easy on us in the Egg Bowl this year. It's going to be an ugly blowout......... lol
Now, I just need to get rid of where it says Sprint. I think that's been covered in the forum somewhere, as I think I remember seeing that topic.
Ha hey you know us dogs go all or nothing man hahaha but I can help ya with that sprint text issue lol I have the Eri.XML file ya need in order to change that but I can't post it from my phone..give me a sec and I'll boot up the laptop to attach it
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Edit: With this file (eri.xml), you need a file manager with root access (i know with estrong you can go to settings, scroll to the very bottom where root options is, then check the root explorer tab and mount file system. Once you back outta the settings copy the eri.xml file, look in the upper left corner and touch the slash button to end up on the root of your phone) Okay from there you wanna find the system/app folder and then paste the eri.xml file there. All ya need to do then is reboot and you should be good lol

Thanks for the help. I copied that eri.xml into the system/app folder and rebooted, but my lock screen is still showing Sprint. I noticed that there wasn't an eri.xml in the system/app folder to start with. Perhaps that has been changed to a different location in the CM6.1 build?

Yesterday I got the mandatory Sprint Voice to text update. This really upset me as the main reason I rooted my phone was to get rid of the bloat ware. So now I have Sprint nagware to deal with. So today I installed and set up the Google Voice Mail program and it works really nice. So I decided to delete/uninstall the Sprint Voice Mail Program. I used Titanium back up and I deleted the program. Everything still works well so I figured it was gone and that was that. Later I looked in my app drawer and was surprised to see that the icon for the sprint voice mail was still there. So I tried to drag it into the garbage and it wouldn't go. So I go into root explorer and to to system>app and go down the list looking for a sprint widget that I needed to get rid of and didn't find one. I also made sure that the sprint voice mail program wasn't in there either. So I shut off the phone and started it again figuring that the program was still in memory. Well after the reboot the program is still on my phone and now it's acting like it's a brand new account and asking me if I want to set it up. So this comes to my question how do I get rid of the Sprint Voice Mail. I can't find it in my system folder so what's going on? Anyone else experience this???
Help is always appreciated............
Lisa
You can try to mount your system and remove it via Terminal Emulator. Its a pretty simple process with only a few commands if you want to have a go that route.

It's a system app, updatecore.apk or such
Not sure what updatecore.apk is but as you pointed out it's probably a big deal.
Driving home from work today I was thinking about all this and then it dawned on me that I didn't really delete the Sprint Voicemail app as I thought. Earlier I was using Titanium and I was about to delete the Sprint voice mail app when I realized that it was telling me it was going to delete "Data" only. So in reality I only deleted the Voicemail data and not the entire program. You are probably correct that this program is securely nestled within the core of the Android/HTC/Sprint package. Truly amazing as this may be one of those things that you cannot get rid of. Unless it resides in it's own .apk somewhere and I can target that one program I'm very hesitant at this point to go after it. The interesting thing about deleting the data is it seems to have reverted back to the older version. A box came up after I rebooted the phone asking me if I wanted to personalize my voice mail like I did the first time months ago. Plus being it's not technically "working" as it's not personalized the sprint genie can't target me for upgrade as it doesn't know I'm using it. What do you think of that idea?
So here is where I am. I have the Google voice mail working and it's a very cool little program. I have a "Google phone number" that is free and actually works but I don't have to do anything about it as my original phone number works the voice mail just fine. So in reality I may have beaten Sprint to at least a draw on this one................
So to recap, I would say, if you don't want the voice to text sprint app you could go into Applications and delete the "DATA" and then it doesn't know who you are. Just leave the sprint voice mail application in the "unsetup state" and the monster "Mandatory Update" can't find you. You have effectively turned off the sprint voice mail that way and then you can install a third party like Google voice mail or You mail or anything you want.
Give me you take on this idea. I think this is whats going on and this may be the only fix to opt out of the Sprint program.................
For future reference, all system (non-deletable) applications are located in /system/app. Use Root Explorer to go there and delete them. I think what he meant was to delete the Sprint Updater, which I think is Sprint_Updater.apk, also in that folder.

Ok.... I thought it was something VMCore.apk
I don't remember. I deleted it and put it back with the name "Sprint_VM.apk". Doesn't matter what it's named, but I think you're right about "VMCore.apk".
Okay Gentlemen, I have looked for all those files and the only one that is there is the Sprint_Updater.apk. Nothing there that has a VM or VVM or Sprint VVM or anything like that. I am running the .6 version of the Sprint stock 2.1. But I believe I have it disable for now. As I wrote previously by deleting the data file I have essentially not activated the program. If you do come up with the file to delete that would take the VVM with it I will certainly give it a try but there is nothing in the system>app folder that looks even close.
I so appreciate you taking you time to weigh in on this problem.
Thank you.........

For the life of me I couldn't find what the apk was named -_- Was about to flash 2.1 to find out ha ha
Though I think Regaw's toolbox may allow you to remove it.

See above, delete that to get rid of SVVM for good
Well Gentlemen, again I just went though that directory vary carefully again and there is nothing that even comes close to a VVM or "voice mail" reference at all. It's simply not there.
Have you guys deleted this off your phones before? I guess you all are running some other Rom then the stock one so you haven't faced this mandatory update thing. But the files you are suggesting to remove are not in that directory. As I mentioned the Updater is there in two versions Sprint Updater and just plane Updater.
I don't believe this issue is worth you flashing the stock rom just to check it but that is a real offer and I appreciate that. I admire you guys that flash these phones just for the heck of it. When I have flashed the phone it makes my heart stop.
But thank you for all your responses. I certainly appreciate it........

I don't use stock, and yes I have been able to eliminate VVM.... did you reboot after deleting? Are you looking under system/app?
Yes to both of your questions.
I was thinking the same thing that maybe the program was still resident in the memory so I pulled the battery and everything. It's Sprints FU to the rooting community I guess...............

Still, it should be removable Is it hiding in data/app or data/app-private for some reason?
Okay, you guys aren't going to believe this. But I rebooted the phone and I checked the data/app and the data/app-private. Found nothing in there. Then I went back to the app drawer and the offending program is GONE! I can't find any vestige of it anywhere. So I gather mission accomplished! I don't know what happened as earlier I did the reboot twice and pulled the battery each time and the third time was the charm for some reason. The only file I didn't remove was the Sprint_updater.apk. It's still there. But I have turned off the updates so I shouldn't be bothered by that either..............

No problem! Glad you got it... let me know if you need anything else before I go to my Epic in a week or two
I have the newest firmware update and I just started having issues with messaging. When I use the stock messaging app If I try to attach a photo I get a force close message. When I receive one It will not download. I have used the google messenger and I cannot receive or send it just says it cant send and cant download. Then in hangouts is I use sms I can send and receive in a group message which I have mms turned on for so group mms works fine if I send a photo is goes through but says "Cannot be store" but I also am unable to download incoming photos. I did a factory restore and that actually made my led star working it used to only work for calls. But im still having the same problem Ive been through the prl and profile update I'm at a loss here and dont know what to do. If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated,
Try wiping out your external sdcard. My wife had an issue where her images were being duplicated by the thousands and was killing space. The lack of space resulted in force closes and the entire phone becoming unstable. What made it even more strange was that these "duplicated" images were nowhere to be found on either her internal or external after viewing all the folders with ES File Explorer and most of the duplicates showed up in the gallery as blank images. Her external sdcard had stuff on it from her other phones and I believe it caused conflicts on the Sharp device. I pulled everything from her sdcard onto my laptop then placed her sdcard into my HTC One SV and used aparted (root required) to wipe and reformat the entire sdcard to fat32. She hasn't had an issue since. I told her to not put the stuff back onto her sdcard except for small stuff like pictures, and music. Anything else was to be left alone since we couldn't narrow down the exact culprit.
I'm having the same problem! No SD card for me.

I will try this tonight that sounds logical my phone is doing the same by duplicating pictures in my music app sometimes it shows doubles as well. Thank you I'll post later if it helps or not. What if I used the SD card slot on my pc and formatted it using command prompt do you think it would work the same?

I do not see why it wouldn't. Aparted is an app you can get from the playstore. Though, some people will be confused when they try to use it given it's gui layout. If you can do it via command-line then kudos for you. Aparted just makes it possible to do it on the phone with root and attempt to make it easier and more friendly. Which it is once you familiarize yourself with it lol. Good luck

well if it's a user app then start deleting them one at a time until the problem stops. If it's a system app then there isn't much you can do at this point since the device is still somewhat locked down.

same issue..recent
Used to work fine..now cant recieve mms...
I was having the same problem also in figured out how to fix it. Go to your dial pad and press ##72786# then press ok. The phone will restart and then take a few minutes to provision your data services. This will not reset any data on your phone but just re-provision the data services on the phone. Somehow the APN settings must have got messed up on our phones when one of the messaging app updates happened. Good luck!
the workaround is to change the lockscreen to 'none' then power the phone off and back on, then put your lock screen back on, weird workaround but it works
I have been having the same issue and tried both methods discussed to no avail. After resetting the provisioning, now I get an error when sending MMS that states "Device not programmed, please wait." I updated both PRL and profile without error and I am now able to place and receive calls and texts and have 3G and 4G data but still cannot send MMS. I really don't want to call customer service. I also cannot roll back messaging app to previous version. I guess another factory reset is in my future.

When you get this error goto settings and click activate this device. This will did your problem..... Unfortunately the workaround I stayed earlier only seems to work until you restart. You then have to do the steps over again.
The only thing that fixes it, and temporarily I might add, is a reset via recovery. My fiancee and I both have had issues with this since we got the phone a little over a month ago. We also lose 4G LTE, continuously dropping to 3G, though we're in a massively covered tri-band 4G LTE area (or so says the networking team at Sprint, who, to get them on the phone, I had to throw out quite a few disparaging tweets and messages to on Twitter and the Sprint forums.) It's a bunch of crap, this phone. My advice: Reset the provisioning, then reset the entire device. It'll work, just try not to reboot the damn thing or you'll have to do it all over again.
I apologize for not posting the update on my findings. I discovered what my issue is, is that I had bluebox launching on startup which was causing the provisioning after reboot failing. So I uninstalled that app and rebooted, the provisioning completed without error and the issue was corrected. I did not have to perform a factory reset to correct it. Thank you all for your input and timely responses.

Hey, any of you root people, could you pull the voicemail apk off your phone so I can use it with my flashed universal phone? Have tried the s6 edge software but no go. Thank you
This is simple through titanium backup. No one?
The one on official firmware will not install correctly. But this is an older one that works. Download and install like normal.

Yes.
Thanks again seems to be working
Once you set up, it may take a while to actually activate. I just left the app, came back to it 5-10 min later, and it was running normally.
Ya took me almost an hr. Worked well though. Downloaded many that didn't work. Just needed 1 that did.
It doesn't appear to actually work. You all just think it is.
If you leave a vm it wont download it (or mine doesn't seem to).
If you go into settings and pref, it shows it's not verified still also. You just stopped seeing the prompt because once the screen times out it is no longer on top but if you fully kill the app and re-open it still says verifying.
These are my findings at least? If you go into settings and pref does it say you're verified?
Yeah I couldn't get it to work either
Didn't work for me either
Try this one it worked for me on my unbranded piece o sh!t locked bootloader s7 edge with the added ticking timebomb feature.
Link vvm
On a side note samsung got what they deserve for [email protected] us usa s7 owners. I hope they lose tons of money

Are you sure?
I've got the same issues all the others did. It can't activate. Just because it stops popping it up doesn't mean it's activated now either. That message suppresses after a while.
It seems to tie into something that it and Sprint Zone use from what I can tell and thus why won't work on these non-branded firmwares.
Leave yourself a VM and see if it shows up...
It usually wouldn't go past the account verification at all. I'm not 100 %sure yet. But it did go farther than before and I'm trying it out now to verify. Will get back
If you press home and go back into it the app will hide the message but it still wont work.
I actually found the outbound activation messages in it that are failing to send even.
So this is another bust.
I think our best luck is if someone can either reverse eng. this thing to modify it to not try to use whatever sprint bloat it's looking for or we find what it's looking for and find a way to put it on our phones.
Sadly it's not a new issue. All the Nexus people have had the issue from day 1. And it seems to be only sprint because they won't make a darn public compatible app.
I can't use GVoice as I already use it for a second number and I don't like any of the third party ones that make you use conditional call forwarding to them to do this...
Another question for you all. I've noticed if NO voicemail app is installed I do not get any notification I have voicemails. If I do install one (despite it not working) I get notified because it says pending voicemail download at least.
With no VM App installed are your phones telling you that you got VM?
Yeah same boat here man. Looks like we beating a dead horse
Yea, Sprint should upload visual voicemail to the Play Store like T-Mobile does. So stupid.

Can anyone post the Sprint VM app for Nougat?

A few hours ago I received a notification on my Sprint LG V20 that an app was updated. Upon closer inspection I found that it was actually a new app installed through the LG Update service center or "LGinstallservice" i.e the one that updates LG's stock proprietary apps like Qmemo and their Clock app and so forth.
The app is called DrAPN_N and it installed itself as a system app. It is currently and has been running in the background process of my phone since that time.
A quick Google search only yielded a Reddit thread with a few more confused LG users with a couple different LG devices that had received the same app on their device (a few posts from today and some a few days back).
My guess (and big emphasis on the word guess) is that it's some sort of hotfix that updates the apn info that sprint has them lock down and isnt editable to a user without modifications, hence the name "Dr. APN". If that's the case I'd be curious what it changes and why. I also just remembered Sprint was doing some spectrum modifications on their old 2g network (or something like that) and realize now that it could have something to do with Sprints repurposing to increase coverage in rural areas. I forget what they are calling that rollout but that along with the name kinda equals my best guess on all of this as of now.
Screenshot below. Thanx for any input or info.
My stock unrooted TMobile variant just got that yesterday. I was wondering what it was.
I remember seeing DRapn. So i guess it's not just a Sprint thingy.
I got this app yesterday. I'm using a sprint v20, but not on sprint or in America. Previously I had been using Textra to use custom APN settings to get MMS working, and it had been fine. But upon installation of this app, those custom changes were no longer applied. Reapplying them has no effect, and now, though sms and call still functions, MMS does not. If this app represents an attempt to lock down custom APN usage, that would be distressing but would explain my failure to get MMS working now despite my efforts. I'm still looking for (an unrooted) solution to uninstall or work around this app. (I would root but am on the latest firmware and don't believe it's rootable right now, though I haven't checked in a while.)
This app just installed on my Sprint LG G5 about an hour ago and I called LG support about it. They didn't have an answer for me, but they said they would call me back when they had an answer. I'll post anything I find out here.
The app installed on my phone today. LG V20
If someone can post the apk, it could probably be disassembled to see what it does... Otherwise everyone's making guesses
DrAPN_N
It just intalled itsself on my rooted sprint v20, link to apk:

Uninstalling it and disabling the LG service that installed it now. :good:
I thought I would add that (as this app was making it impossible for my APN settings to be retained longer than a few minutes on my sprint lg V20 being used outside USA) I set about to disable it. The disable button was greyed out so I denied it permissions to change system settings and deleted its cache. To my suprise it still had the effect of undoing my APN settings. So I disabled it via ADB, and that did the trick. Been using the phone for 24 hours since and noticed no issues.
ADB?

Can you please explain how you did the process through ADB? I'm in need of doing this myself...thanks

according to LG , this app is supposed to determine and program APN automatically based on inserted SIM.
Would be nice if it had a GUI to disable itself. Do you have non-Sprint APN? What happens to your APN settings? do they reset back to sprint?
Does new APN gets unselected? deleted?

Thanks for that information.
I do have a non Sprint APN. I'm using a Sprint phone outside USA. I had had to set my phone to expect an AT&T connection, in a secret dialer menu, to get it fully working. (I described the process above.) I expect my weird set up did something Drapn was not expecting, causing it to mess up the issue it was meant to address.
Forgive this lengthy reply, but I'll leave it in case others have the same problem. Before this Drapn issue, just editing APN in regular stock android settings, while it allowed most data to work, and sms, would not allow MMS or certain kinds of messaging, like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. I have no idea why, though I did find other users online with the same problem using sprint phones outside America. Eventually I fixed the problem by marking the phone AT&T in the secret dialer menu, as described in my previous post in this thread. At that point the APN settings took hold. Until Drapn was installed, which perhaps got confused between the Sprint/AT&T/My Carrier settings. I could input APN settings into the stock android system settings, and sometimes it would work initially (other times, if I edited too many fields, the entry would vanish after I saved it) but always it would stop working after a few minutes or at least inside an hour. Had I factory reset the phone, and attempted my modifications from scratch with Drapn installed, perhaps it would have worked fine. Then again perhaps the necessary changes would have been impossible to implement.
I am not sure what APN settings Drapn was reverting me to. My custom entry would either remain but stop functioning, or else be deleted, and also stop functuoning. All I know is that nothing worked until I disabled Drapn with ADB, having deleted its cache and revoked its permissions.
Because I was using a phone modified within a secret dialer menu, I don't figure I can get 100% mad at LG for pushing an app that borked my phone. You play with fire you get burned, etc. Then again, pushing an app with no transparency as to what it does, and no freedom to disable it, is certainly not the best. I suppose now I have to worry if accepting the Oreo update will reintroduce this issue and leave my phone inoperable outside the USA.

check out the LG V30 threads. this is exactly what happened there. Unlocked by sprint phones became locked again after Oreo update. And if you are no longer on Sprint network you are stuck. So yes, you have all the reasons to worry.

Yikes. Thanks for that. Just read through a big thread, what a mess. Looking like I'll likely be trapped on Nougat. Much appreciated, at least I didn't find out the hard way.
