Couple of problems for CS user with Cyanogen 6 - Hero CDMA General

Hopefully this is the right place to post this question. I have installed the latest stable Cyanogen rom, but I'm running into a couple of problems:
1. I cannot send text messages that are more than a few words in length. I suspect this to be because the ROM was written with Sprint's settings, and those settings simply won't work with Cellular South users. Am I right in that there is something that I must change to get my texts to work correctly with Cellular South?
2. Reboots - this one is rather annoying. There is really no rhyme or reason as to why it does this. I can reboot my phone, and it will just sit there, with only SipDroid running in the background (as far as apps that I have added that are running), and my phone will reboot itself every few hours. Now, one thing that did happen was the 2GB MicroSD card that came with the phone died, and I replaced it with a Class 6 8GB MicroSD card. I can't remember if I had the reboot problems prior to that. Any suggestions to help me try to isolate the cause of this?
Thanks everyone.

Bump. Sorry about bumping this thread. Just do not want to have to go back to my stock ROM.

You need the APN settings for cs I think.

Does it by chance reboot when your GPS comes on? Open Maps (or anything you know will cause the GPS to become active) and see what happens. If so try the GPS fix. Used to be able to type ##GPSCLRX#, in Sense but you can't in CM, but there is a fix.

@ranger - it reboots even when the GPS is off (I generally keep it off). Thanks for the suggestion though. Maybe I just need to wipe it and reflash? Couldn't hurt I suppose.
@mrinehart - thanks. I'll do some searching for the "APN Settings" for Cellular South.

What's your total setup with cm6? Like kernel, overclock app and what not? But I believe all cdma users have the 160 character limit with the stock messenging app but if you use handcent or chomp you can bypass this by checking the split thread option in settings. Hopefully after hearing your setup I can help you figure out what's causing the reboots

@ThaSik1 - I was using just the stock messaging app. I didn't realize there was a limitation in the stock messaging app. My setup was just CM6 stable with the gapps installed. The only other apps that I had running constantly were Sipdroid (used for my GV + Gizmo5), and for overclock, I had been using the Overclock Widget. I have restored my stock CS ROM for now - but will applying the CM 6.1 RC1 ROM today.
Let me ask this - my stock CS ROM is 2.1. Would it be worthwhile to copy my APN configuration file from my stock ROM over the CM 6.1 configuration file? Or, would that cause problems?

To my knowledge it shouldn do any harm because the apn file that comes with Cyanogen roms dont have our carrier listed in it anyways. And if it does cause problems, i'll just attach my apn file (which is a modified version of cyanogen's to include Cellular south). But I dont think apn's do much good unless you have picture messaging..dont quote me on that tho lol As for your reboots, i can't see why it would be rebooting like that..If you wiped data and dalvik/cache, then flashed the rom, followed by gapps you should be good. Only thing i can actually see giving you problems would be if you had it overclocked too high since all heroes can't handle the 768 frequency

Flash Deca’s capped kernel to stop the random reboots

I do have picture messaging on my plan - I take it I will need to go ahead and use my a CS APN file. If you don't mind, then yes - please do post the Cellular South APN file that you have. I really do appreciate your help your help. This forum rocks!
I have installed CM6 RC1, and everything seems to work great. I took your advice on not using the stock messaging app and am using Handcent instead. I set it to split the messages. That appears to have fixed the texting problem. Handcent reminds me of my old iPhone texting setup, which I really liked. I have also set the Overclock to max at 691 to make sure that I don't run it too high (or too hot for that matter).

hahahaha no problem honestly i'm just paying it forward my good friend cuz i was once in your shoes lol.. To use the apn file i'm attaching, use an app from the market called "apn backup & restore".. install the app, use a file manager to place the attached file in the folder labeled "ApnBackupRestore", then open the apn app, click delete apns, then click restore apns. You might also need to reboot for it to take affect too lol and sorry to step on your toes in case you already know all of this info But i really hope Cm6.1 works out well for you cuz my Csouth hero is loving it!! haha
P.S. the xml file inside the attached zip is what you wanna place inside the folder lol

Wow, thank you again for your help on this. And no, you certainly weren't stepping on my toes. Thanks for the steps to take - I wasn't sure how to do any of that to be honest and would have been searching this forum for a long while most likely.
So far, CM6.1 has been rocking! I'll let you know how the APN goes. Thanks again!

@ThaSik1 - so far, all of the texts seem to be working great. Thanks again for your help! It really is appreciated.

Thanks. And go easy on us in the Egg Bowl this year. It's going to be an ugly blowout......... lol
Now, I just need to get rid of where it says Sprint. I think that's been covered in the forum somewhere, as I think I remember seeing that topic.

Ha hey you know us dogs go all or nothing man hahaha but I can help ya with that sprint text issue lol I have the Eri.XML file ya need in order to change that but I can't post it from my phone..give me a sec and I'll boot up the laptop to attach it

Edit: With this file (eri.xml), you need a file manager with root access (i know with estrong you can go to settings, scroll to the very bottom where root options is, then check the root explorer tab and mount file system. Once you back outta the settings copy the eri.xml file, look in the upper left corner and touch the slash button to end up on the root of your phone) Okay from there you wanna find the system/app folder and then paste the eri.xml file there. All ya need to do then is reboot and you should be good lol

Thanks for the help. I copied that eri.xml into the system/app folder and rebooted, but my lock screen is still showing Sprint. I noticed that there wasn't an eri.xml in the system/app folder to start with. Perhaps that has been changed to a different location in the CM6.1 build?

[Q] In call color question

I'm running TAZv9 mod and have a nice looking color mod that makes my phone look and run really nice. Just curious if there was anyway to change the color on the screen that comes up when you are in a call. It has a red background when the call ends and green while you are in the call. Is there anyway to change this to a blue or whatever when you are in the call...basically is this something that can be skinned with one of the programs that is out there(MetaMorph).
I'm 41 years old and my 20 yr. old son has gotten me into this whole rooting thing. I appreciate you all letting an old guy hang in your forum. I write test software for a living so I am interested in maybe getting to the point where I can start messing with my own software apps, etc.
I'm sorry if the question seems really dumb to all you bright young people, but I couldn't find anything about it on the search button.
Thanks for any info and help,

I can probably put together a quick metamorph for you. The file is in Phone.apk
So instead of the green gradient you want a blue gradient? And keep the red gradient when it ends?
Just place the attached file on your sdcard in "AndroidThemes" and use Metamorph.
Yep. That is exactly what I want. Thanks!

Just download the file and your computer. Hookup your phone and mount the sdcard. Then create a folder on it called "AndroidThemes". Next download "Metamorph" from the market. Run it and select the "blue-in-call" theme, and apply it.
Yes...I figured that out and it looks great. My questions were about what you used to modify the graphic (Photoshop)? Im hoping to start modifying some stuff and make my own graphics to use with Metamorph.
Thanks again for your help and for not flaming the old guy!

The link you posted really only addresses MMS send and receive issues relating to incorrect APN settings.
A fix for the compressed MMS issue is listed on Page 3 (Comment 25), but the instructions are only achievable if you have a Linux box. Plus you have to delete your old data.img and do a fresh install.
BetaBoy,
The poor quality MMS issue is discussed more in-depth on this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=774672
The problem is only affecting Desire builds and is not an issue on the standalone Froyo builds.
Now there are two ways to fix the compressed MMS issue.
Option 1:
1. Download ES File Explorer from the market, install
2. Go to ./system/etc/ directory and look for a file called "mm_property.conf", open the file to edit.
3. Change the wapprofile=" to "http://www.htcmms.com.tw/Android/common/NexusOne/ua-profile.xml"
4. Save the changes
If that is too complicated, then the following option is for you! I went with option 2 because I am not proficient with file explorers and I couldn't figure out how to correctly access the system directory...
(Please note, with this method you have to delete your old data.img and do a fresh install)
Option 2:
Go to this thread and download the corrected data.img.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=774672
(Also note, Chiasoft has only corrected FroyoStone Sense V2 and Mattc Froyo Sense 1.7)
If you send him a PM, maybe he can put together a data.img for your setup.
And Betaboy, what the hell are you running 2.1 for anyway?
No need for any of that
The problem was fixed i just went into Messages>settings>Custom User Agent>Nokia N95
Problems Slved!

You aren't running the sense Build; Vanilla Android has different fixes. If it's a CM port, then you can modify the UA within the MMS app.
On another thought: Sense is "prettier" looking on that nice 4.3" display on the HD2 than stock Android, no matter how you theme it, imo.

How Do I Get Rid Of Sprint Voice Mail - It Just Won't Go

Yesterday I got the mandatory Sprint Voice to text update. This really upset me as the main reason I rooted my phone was to get rid of the bloat ware. So now I have Sprint nagware to deal with. So today I installed and set up the Google Voice Mail program and it works really nice. So I decided to delete/uninstall the Sprint Voice Mail Program. I used Titanium back up and I deleted the program. Everything still works well so I figured it was gone and that was that. Later I looked in my app drawer and was surprised to see that the icon for the sprint voice mail was still there. So I tried to drag it into the garbage and it wouldn't go. So I go into root explorer and to to system>app and go down the list looking for a sprint widget that I needed to get rid of and didn't find one. I also made sure that the sprint voice mail program wasn't in there either. So I shut off the phone and started it again figuring that the program was still in memory. Well after the reboot the program is still on my phone and now it's acting like it's a brand new account and asking me if I want to set it up. So this comes to my question how do I get rid of the Sprint Voice Mail. I can't find it in my system folder so what's going on? Anyone else experience this???
Help is always appreciated............
Lisa
You can try to mount your system and remove it via Terminal Emulator. Its a pretty simple process with only a few commands if you want to have a go that route.

It's a system app, updatecore.apk or such
Not sure what updatecore.apk is but as you pointed out it's probably a big deal.
Driving home from work today I was thinking about all this and then it dawned on me that I didn't really delete the Sprint Voicemail app as I thought. Earlier I was using Titanium and I was about to delete the Sprint voice mail app when I realized that it was telling me it was going to delete "Data" only. So in reality I only deleted the Voicemail data and not the entire program. You are probably correct that this program is securely nestled within the core of the Android/HTC/Sprint package. Truly amazing as this may be one of those things that you cannot get rid of. Unless it resides in it's own .apk somewhere and I can target that one program I'm very hesitant at this point to go after it. The interesting thing about deleting the data is it seems to have reverted back to the older version. A box came up after I rebooted the phone asking me if I wanted to personalize my voice mail like I did the first time months ago. Plus being it's not technically "working" as it's not personalized the sprint genie can't target me for upgrade as it doesn't know I'm using it. What do you think of that idea?
So here is where I am. I have the Google voice mail working and it's a very cool little program. I have a "Google phone number" that is free and actually works but I don't have to do anything about it as my original phone number works the voice mail just fine. So in reality I may have beaten Sprint to at least a draw on this one................
So to recap, I would say, if you don't want the voice to text sprint app you could go into Applications and delete the "DATA" and then it doesn't know who you are. Just leave the sprint voice mail application in the "unsetup state" and the monster "Mandatory Update" can't find you. You have effectively turned off the sprint voice mail that way and then you can install a third party like Google voice mail or You mail or anything you want.
Give me you take on this idea. I think this is whats going on and this may be the only fix to opt out of the Sprint program.................
For future reference, all system (non-deletable) applications are located in /system/app. Use Root Explorer to go there and delete them. I think what he meant was to delete the Sprint Updater, which I think is Sprint_Updater.apk, also in that folder.

Ok.... I thought it was something VMCore.apk
I don't remember. I deleted it and put it back with the name "Sprint_VM.apk". Doesn't matter what it's named, but I think you're right about "VMCore.apk".
Okay Gentlemen, I have looked for all those files and the only one that is there is the Sprint_Updater.apk. Nothing there that has a VM or VVM or Sprint VVM or anything like that. I am running the .6 version of the Sprint stock 2.1. But I believe I have it disable for now. As I wrote previously by deleting the data file I have essentially not activated the program. If you do come up with the file to delete that would take the VVM with it I will certainly give it a try but there is nothing in the system>app folder that looks even close.
I so appreciate you taking you time to weigh in on this problem.

See above, delete that to get rid of SVVM for good
Well Gentlemen, again I just went though that directory vary carefully again and there is nothing that even comes close to a VVM or "voice mail" reference at all. It's simply not there.
Have you guys deleted this off your phones before? I guess you all are running some other Rom then the stock one so you haven't faced this mandatory update thing. But the files you are suggesting to remove are not in that directory. As I mentioned the Updater is there in two versions Sprint Updater and just plane Updater.
I don't believe this issue is worth you flashing the stock rom just to check it but that is a real offer and I appreciate that. I admire you guys that flash these phones just for the heck of it. When I have flashed the phone it makes my heart stop.
But thank you for all your responses. I certainly appreciate it........

Yes to both of your questions.
I was thinking the same thing that maybe the program was still resident in the memory so I pulled the battery and everything. It's Sprints FU to the rooting community I guess...............

Still, it should be removable Is it hiding in data/app or data/app-private for some reason?
Okay, you guys aren't going to believe this. But I rebooted the phone and I checked the data/app and the data/app-private. Found nothing in there. Then I went back to the app drawer and the offending program is GONE! I can't find any vestige of it anywhere. So I gather mission accomplished! I don't know what happened as earlier I did the reboot twice and pulled the battery each time and the third time was the charm for some reason. The only file I didn't remove was the Sprint_updater.apk. It's still there. But I have turned off the updates so I shouldn't be bothered by that either..............
Thank you all for your help. The android mystery continues..........
I really can't thank you guys enough as you have always come through..........

No problem! Glad you got it... let me know if you need anything else before I go to my Epic in a week or two

Galaxy Tab P-1010 WiFy only

If you are frustrated with Samsungs total lack of support for this new device let me share with you some solutions that will make you change your mind about how you feel about your new Galaxy Tab WiFy only.
First; Root it!!!
Download the z4Root App and do it with one click........painless and you are set free and on your way.
Second; Download One Click Lag Fix from the Market ,
this is a magical app for this Galaxy Tab , it unlocks its full potential. Thank you Ryan!!! Give him a raise please!
Just make sure BEFORE you run the app move ALL of your apps from the SD Card and place them back on your device, you can move them back to the SD Card after you run the app if you like. If you try and run this app with apps on the SD Card you will send your device into a boot loop so please make note of this.
Result; Snap and Speed Clocked 1900 on Quardrant, smooth scrolling and blazing speed browsing this has become a completely different device , I now love this Galaxy Tab and I am going to keep it!
Doesn't show in the market for me
one click lag fix app
if you search one click lag fix in the Market in comes up as RyanZA OCLF, this is the app you want for a very small price well worth it!
Could not find z4Root in the market but there should be a thread here in XDA or search it on your device and direct download the apk file
It's Wifi, not Wify.
you definitely do NOT need to pay for OCLF. it's widely available for free on the web.
also, i noticed no difference after OCLF (benchmarks don't mean **** for actual device usage), so I uninstalled it.
the app's needed

yeahhh i just got this device and the first night i noticed some lagg and even managed to lock it up twice
but about the above. if u need the apps u can find any paid app or missing apps from the market at 4shared.com. when u get find them you will have to wait 20 secs and then app should begain downloading (must allow 3rd party apps to be installed)
when looking for One Click Lag Fix search for OCLF
when looking for z4Root search for z4root
PS.... i would post links but cant till i hit the 8 message spam thing ill PM person who started the topic to see if he can include the files
AWSOME WORKS GUYS THANKS

I'm not sure if this really work or is a placebo effect only.
Anyways I try but my P-1010 lost the vibration effect , I uninstall the OCLF and this come back to normal.

oh RIGHT, that's also another reason I un-installed OCLF. losing haptic feedback was a dealbreaker for me.
Do I have to install EXT2 tool?
What is the function of EXT2?
I installed it but could not feel anything special.
WHY!

Tried several versions of z4Root and none seem to work for me - How does one tell if the root was done (took the temporary approach with z4Root v1.3)
I am specifically trying to find the Skype data file to delete so can re-install it
If the rooting is working then I simply can't find the file so missing something
data/data/com.skype.raider

u should be able to go to menu, settings, applications, manage applications then find skype and unistall
but to answear ur question directly when u install z4root and open the app it will say root,
if its already rooted u should see re-root or undo root..
Thanks
After rooting look for Skype to uninstall but not there. The issue is that if installed then uninstalled Skype seems to leave, based on other board comments, that residual Data file and thus can't be reinstalled. My understanding is that once rooted one can then locate that hidden file and delete it so can reinstall Skype but this doesn't seem to be the case, does it? I can't find that file.
When Temp rooted and restart z4Root it does offer an Re-root option so (now using V1.3) it has been rooted.
Perhaps there is a difference in rooting between Temp & Permanent but wouldn't think so
Appreciate your help

Any luck finding the solution???
Best regards
Jerome
You need to be rooted and use an explorer, run a search for Skype and delete everything it finds.

I know replacing it removes the rcs and volte icons that show up after rooting. That's all I know tho lol. It has to do with data service I believe.

If I remember correctly that should have to do with video calling but not positive.

Do we know anymore info on this? After rooting the s7 (at&t) everything was fine, accept sending texts through messeges failed. Then this notification came up, I could not remove it from notifications. I did a restart and got stuck in boot loop and had to factory reset. Now, I haven't finished root yet, but still on same rom and this has popped up again.

i got the stupid devil faced notification too. its also from com.sec.vsimservice . I never had this before but it seems ever since i started using Digits from t-mobile.
I cannot remove it for the life of me and it doesnt matter what rom i am on. I tried clearing cache and data and also blocking notifications but i can still see it when i pull down the notifications. I get it right after i send a chat message using default samsung chat app. BTW im on the note 5 t-mobile.
EDIT: i found out that vsimservice stands for virtual sim service. Well it must be freaken t-mobile Digits beta program... =/ so annoying.
I started getting the devil notification after root on stock every time I get a voicemail. I can clear it like any other notification, it's just annoying.

Mike the file nerd
I'm far from an expert at this but I could tell you how to avoid the problem in the future. I assume that if you have access to directories that contain system preconfig apps you must be running root privilege. Follow down the path to you're particular carrier. In my case I'm technically running on unlocked carrier but for the most part my phone still believes it is AIO(Cricket) ie boot still runs cricket sales code still runs as AIO. ECT. so in my example the file path would be /system/omc/AIO/etc. Inside your carriers file you will find several manifest (.xml) and text (.txt) files somthing along the lines of default_application_order.xml and/or enforcedskippingpackages.txt In my case on my s8 I have both. I haven't personally tried this yet so don't blame me if you try it and turn you phone into an 800$ paperweight (disclaimer) not to mention tampering xml is slightly outside of ethical phone use! That being said I'm of the opinion at least in my own case; if I pay for a device and don't have a contract against it i.e. I outright own the device I may set it up as i please. (Disclaimer) So ethics behind us. If I were to be experiencing this problem I would start by adding the problem pkg (...vsim...apk) whatever yours is called to the enforcedskipping.txt first (as it's slightly less unethical to change a text than a manifest) second find the system app either by an app like sysapp remover or like a real man inside the file system under probably something along the lines of "priv-app" dir or by superuser enabled terminals either abd via your computer/mac/linux whatever you run or by one of the many available terminals in the store of your choice and uninstall your problem apps (i highly suggest making a complete nandroid backup or tar or whatever recovery you use first and also saving a copy of the apk just in case) reboot your phone to recovery clear your cache partition remount the system and reboot. If this hasn't cleared up your problem back to recovery for a factory wipe with said modified files in place and backup ready. Reinstall everything then restore your backup via cmw/twrp/safestrap/bootstrap/odin/lgbridge/etc.etcetc whatever your preferred recovery method is your problem should be fixed. If still not mod the xml instead of the txt and restart from step one. Once again I do not know what dependency/gradles/etc may or may not depend on this what functions you may kill sim cards locked/ruined etc and I'm no professional so if you brick☠??? your ??that's on you for listening to an amateur enthusiast. Now I'm sure one of our wonderful experts here will come along and correct everything I've just said but I'm ok with this I listen to these guys every day I wouldn't know a fraction of the things I do without this wonderful forum and these amazing devs. So I appreciate their criticism as tutoring.

With all that said and out of the way I would like to hear from anyone who has tried this personally or other method for removing this as I myself was led to this particular thread because I was investigating the possibility of what I could change within this particular system app myself. I brick my phone phone twice a day usually so before I crash my very well set up system I usually investigate first the reciprocation/ramifications of adjusting system orientated files/apps.
