text messaging issue after update to Nougat - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

I updated to Nougat on my verizon s7. I rooted me device as well. For some reason the default text messaging app is saving my messages to the sim card automatically. I looked everywhere and couldnt find a fix for this. Does anyone have any idea of how I can fix this. I really dont want to factory reset my phone. Even if i use a 3rd party app it still comes up. Any info would be helpful thank you in advance

Is your phone memory full? Reading about this problem seems to point to that. I know the SMS file itself with just simple sentences shouldn't take up much space but if your phone's memory is full then it may be trying to save it to the SIM card itself.
Edit:
Just found another possible solution, if the phone has been dropped or experienced some form of shock then it may have knocked the SIM card around. The solution is to power down the phone and remove the SIM. Give it a wipe down and reinsert.
Hopefully one of these solutions works.

cannot execute tmail.exe

Hey guys,
My Touch keeps giving me this error message. It pops up and won't go away for a long time. I know tmail.exe is the messaging app, but does anybody know what could be causing this? Anybody else had this issue?
same issue, any help is greatly appreciated. just flashed bd3.1 and added a tmobile 5.99 MMS CAB.

I see that error message from time to time, along with the more frequent "cannot execute clocknot.exe, calnot.exe and repllog.exe". It appears that these are old, old WM issues that nobody has a solution to... it is apparently part of the general flakeyness of WM -- stuff that is swept under the rug in WM-world...", accepted as a matter of course, along with WM's lags and resets...
For me, these errors happen the most when the device is waking up from standby, so I assume it is some kind of race condition in WM...

Same here. Tried 2 "solutions" I found that DID NOT WORK !
1) changing the time zone; start-settings-personal-phone-timezones=> uncheck
2) remove SPB Time
I repeat, neither works.
Do you have the "When available, use this store card to store attachments" checked under the storage tab? DON'T CHECK IT!
^^^
Ditto, don't store any emails on the memory chit. For some reason, the database that supports the filing of the emails get corrupted.

Yes. I did have it checked. Not anymore. Going to test it for a while now without it checked. Thanks Nuttsac & da.bell
Observation: While I thought the pop-ups were random, I discovered that they were in fact only happening while ActiveSync was running! And for some strange reason, when I start getting the errors, I'd check and find that AS was running even though I had not started it nor was I connected to my PC. Some program/task was starting it. Once I kill AS, the pop-ups stopped.

[Q] Any news on if the new SD card policy is being reversed?

Yesterday I got a call from my network offering an upgrade to the S5 (from my current s3/i9300) which I accepted only to find out afterwards about the new SD card policy in kitkat.
Is there any news somewhere about if this change is being reversed anytime soon? Otherwise I'm considering returning the phone before I even get it.
Yes I have tried Google but I don't know if there's somewhere it's being mentioned somewhere that I missed e.g. Facebook or Google+.
I know there are root based fixes but I wouldn't want to root it (not yet anyway).

No, there are a few work-arounds (like Samsung still supporting app2sd, root,...). But Google isn't changing its policy on SD cards.
You can still use the stock app My Files on the S5 to read/write to the SD card...but yes Google is closing loopholes with each update. Just ask the folks that use FolderSync, worked at first with KitKat, then 4.4.2 came along and made it to where the app couldn't sync with the SD card anymore.

I'm one of the folder sync crowd and I'm not happy that apps I've paid for have been crippled in this way Foldersync's not the only app either. I know I could root the phone and get round it that way but at the moment that's not something I'm prepared to do. This all smacks of Google forcing us to use cloud services namely theirs! as a result if I have to go the cloud root it'll be anything but Google Drive.

You nailed it...
i would also like it reversed
as far as i understand it was designed to clean up orphaned files on the SD card which is all very nice but...
what about all the orphaned files that cannot be touched now if you upgraded your existing phone from 4.3 and the apps no longer have permission???
very poorly thought out move for a zillion dollar company
After trying it out I've decided I'm going to return it, at least until this situation is fixed officially since within 5 minutes I was finding problems which never existed before.
If google are that concerned over SD card management they should at least give the option for the old system like supersu does for root..
It feels like Android is starting to turn into a half-a***ed ios.

FYI- If you root, you can fix the "sd card issue".
Didn't even know there was an sd card issue lol
Rooted before I used anything within 10 mins of receiving phone! Why wouldn't you want to root?

Mainly the warranty among a few other things.
If the thing supported the SD card as it was OOTB chances are I'd be fine on a stock, un-rooted ROM and there are few other reasons I'd root it otherwise (at least for now).
An app called File expert has sorted this issue out with out root. Available from play Store
any link to which file expert? there seems to be mutliple "file experts". I am another user that is not happy about the sd card situation, nice fat card, unable to move. As far as why not to root, I gotta give it back in a year.
Am I correct in my interpretation that to someone like myself, who only stores photos and music on external card, this has no effect?

From what I understand, yes and no.
The change is that most apps no longer have write access to anywhere on the SD card, the only exceptions I believe are system apps and MTP.
So if you only use the stock camera, file manager and MTP you should be fine AFAIK.
If however you use other apps e.g. isyncr, that will only be able to save files in it's own dedicated folder (e.g. exsdcard>Android>com.isyncr>music) and if you uninstall the app it will remove the data it's saved there so you need to backup anything first.
However, apps can READ anywhere so for example, you could have your music in a folder you can still use any compatible media player.
There however have been work arounds from what I've read, for example, using the Android media scanner it's been possible to delete compatible songs instead of directly deleting it.

this is also not a samsung issue...its an android KitKat issue....so no matter what phone u get..it wil happen
anyways..yes this is an issue if you are unrooted...but being rooted and running the app fixes the issue
Samsung could do something about it. It is their own Touchwiz ROM after all.
Of course unless Google throws a fit for going against design directions.

Please help

I have the newest firmware update and I just started having issues with messaging. When I use the stock messaging app If I try to attach a photo I get a force close message. When I receive one It will not download. I have used the google messenger and I cannot receive or send it just says it cant send and cant download. Then in hangouts is I use sms I can send and receive in a group message which I have mms turned on for so group mms works fine if I send a photo is goes through but says "Cannot be store" but I also am unable to download incoming photos. I did a factory restore and that actually made my led star working it used to only work for calls. But im still having the same problem Ive been through the prl and profile update I'm at a loss here and dont know what to do. If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated,
Try wiping out your external sdcard. My wife had an issue where her images were being duplicated by the thousands and was killing space. The lack of space resulted in force closes and the entire phone becoming unstable. What made it even more strange was that these "duplicated" images were nowhere to be found on either her internal or external after viewing all the folders with ES File Explorer and most of the duplicates showed up in the gallery as blank images. Her external sdcard had stuff on it from her other phones and I believe it caused conflicts on the Sharp device. I pulled everything from her sdcard onto my laptop then placed her sdcard into my HTC One SV and used aparted (root required) to wipe and reformat the entire sdcard to fat32. She hasn't had an issue since. I told her to not put the stuff back onto her sdcard except for small stuff like pictures, and music. Anything else was to be left alone since we couldn't narrow down the exact culprit.
I'm having the same problem! No SD card for me.

I will try this tonight that sounds logical my phone is doing the same by duplicating pictures in my music app sometimes it shows doubles as well. Thank you I'll post later if it helps or not. What if I used the SD card slot on my pc and formatted it using command prompt do you think it would work the same?

I do not see why it wouldn't. Aparted is an app you can get from the playstore. Though, some people will be confused when they try to use it given it's gui layout. If you can do it via command-line then kudos for you. Aparted just makes it possible to do it on the phone with root and attempt to make it easier and more friendly. Which it is once you familiarize yourself with it lol. Good luck

When I first had this problem I reset the device twice and used the original sim card that came with the phone. I know it has to be some app not playing nice but I can't find out which one.

well if it's a user app then start deleting them one at a time until the problem stops. If it's a system app then there isn't much you can do at this point since the device is still somewhat locked down.

same issue..recent
Used to work fine..now cant recieve mms...
I was having the same problem also in figured out how to fix it. Go to your dial pad and press ##72786# then press ok. The phone will restart and then take a few minutes to provision your data services. This will not reset any data on your phone but just re-provision the data services on the phone. Somehow the APN settings must have got messed up on our phones when one of the messaging app updates happened. Good luck!
the workaround is to change the lockscreen to 'none' then power the phone off and back on, then put your lock screen back on, weird workaround but it works
I have been having the same issue and tried both methods discussed to no avail. After resetting the provisioning, now I get an error when sending MMS that states "Device not programmed, please wait." I updated both PRL and profile without error and I am now able to place and receive calls and texts and have 3G and 4G data but still cannot send MMS. I really don't want to call customer service. I also cannot roll back messaging app to previous version. I guess another factory reset is in my future.

When you get this error goto settings and click activate this device. This will did your problem..... Unfortunately the workaround I stayed earlier only seems to work until you restart. You then have to do the steps over again.
The only thing that fixes it, and temporarily I might add, is a reset via recovery. My fiancee and I both have had issues with this since we got the phone a little over a month ago. We also lose 4G LTE, continuously dropping to 3G, though we're in a massively covered tri-band 4G LTE area (or so says the networking team at Sprint, who, to get them on the phone, I had to throw out quite a few disparaging tweets and messages to on Twitter and the Sprint forums.) It's a bunch of crap, this phone. My advice: Reset the provisioning, then reset the entire device. It'll work, just try not to reboot the damn thing or you'll have to do it all over again.
I apologize for not posting the update on my findings. I discovered what my issue is, is that I had bluebox launching on startup which was causing the provisioning after reboot failing. So I uninstalled that app and rebooted, the provisioning completed without error and the issue was corrected. I did not have to perform a factory reset to correct it. Thank you all for your input and timely responses.

open channel for BIP

I keep getting this annoying message from time to time on top of everything else.
Does anybody know what the hell it is?
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (SM-G935F) using stock v6.0.1 Marshmallow firmware
Barrier Independent Protocol, relative new high speed channel for moving data between a BIP server and a storage device (like the SD card in a phone).
That said I have no idea why you are getting the message or how to make it stop.
Sorry
Maybe a bug in these initial firmware version... hmmm... anybody else that can think about something else?

Thank you alot , i recently changed my Sim card and that actually worked
how do i get the bip channel off my phone cause my phone wont work
After setting up a brand new J7 and moving my apps over using Smart Switch app I had the same problem. The problem was the Smart Switch app didn't properly transfer over a couple of the apps. The background processes made their way over to the new phone but the app icons did not appear anywhere. The fix I did was to uninstall those "ghost" apps and then reinstall them. That resolved the problem. There were other quirky problems with other installed programs - all resolved by running updates on all Apps as well - all caused apparently because of differences between my old apps OS and my new phone's OS and the inability of Smart Switch to deal with those differences.

Do we know anymore info on this? After rooting the s7 (at&t) everything was fine, accept sending texts through messeges failed. Then this notification came up, I could not remove it from notifications. I did a restart and got stuck in boot loop and had to factory reset. Now, I haven't finished root yet, but still on same rom and this has popped up again.

i got the stupid devil faced notification too. its also from com.sec.vsimservice . I never had this before but it seems ever since i started using Digits from t-mobile.
I cannot remove it for the life of me and it doesnt matter what rom i am on. I tried clearing cache and data and also blocking notifications but i can still see it when i pull down the notifications. I get it right after i send a chat message using default samsung chat app. BTW im on the note 5 t-mobile.
EDIT: i found out that vsimservice stands for virtual sim service. Well it must be freaken t-mobile Digits beta program... =/ so annoying.
I started getting the devil notification after root on stock every time I get a voicemail. I can clear it like any other notification, it's just annoying.

Mike the file nerd
I'm far from an expert at this but I could tell you how to avoid the problem in the future. I assume that if you have access to directories that contain system preconfig apps you must be running root privilege. Follow down the path to you're particular carrier. In my case I'm technically running on unlocked carrier but for the most part my phone still believes it is AIO(Cricket) ie boot still runs cricket sales code still runs as AIO. ECT. so in my example the file path would be /system/omc/AIO/etc. Inside your carriers file you will find several manifest (.xml) and text (.txt) files somthing along the lines of default_application_order.xml and/or enforcedskippingpackages.txt In my case on my s8 I have both. I haven't personally tried this yet so don't blame me if you try it and turn you phone into an 800$ paperweight (disclaimer) not to mention tampering xml is slightly outside of ethical phone use! That being said I'm of the opinion at least in my own case; if I pay for a device and don't have a contract against it i.e. I outright own the device I may set it up as i please. (Disclaimer) So ethics behind us. If I were to be experiencing this problem I would start by adding the problem pkg (...vsim...apk) whatever yours is called to the enforcedskipping.txt first (as it's slightly less unethical to change a text than a manifest) second find the system app either by an app like sysapp remover or like a real man inside the file system under probably something along the lines of "priv-app" dir or by superuser enabled terminals either abd via your computer/mac/linux whatever you run or by one of the many available terminals in the store of your choice and uninstall your problem apps (i highly suggest making a complete nandroid backup or tar or whatever recovery you use first and also saving a copy of the apk just in case) reboot your phone to recovery clear your cache partition remount the system and reboot. If this hasn't cleared up your problem back to recovery for a factory wipe with said modified files in place and backup ready. Reinstall everything then restore your backup via cmw/twrp/safestrap/bootstrap/odin/lgbridge/etc.etcetc whatever your preferred recovery method is your problem should be fixed. If still not mod the xml instead of the txt and restart from step one. Once again I do not know what dependency/gradles/etc may or may not depend on this what functions you may kill sim cards locked/ruined etc and I'm no professional so if you brickā˜ ??? your ??that's on you for listening to an amateur enthusiast. Now I'm sure one of our wonderful experts here will come along and correct everything I've just said but I'm ok with this I listen to these guys every day I wouldn't know a fraction of the things I do without this wonderful forum and these amazing devs. So I appreciate their criticism as tutoring.

With all that said and out of the way I would like to hear from anyone who has tried this personally or other method for removing this as I myself was led to this particular thread because I was investigating the possibility of what I could change within this particular system app myself. I brick my phone phone twice a day usually so before I crash my very well set up system I usually investigate first the reciprocation/ramifications of adjusting system orientated files/apps.
