[Q] Smartwatch + Navigation: Battery Life? - Other SmartWatches

Hi there,
i consider to buy a Smartwatch (perhaps LG G Watch R) for bike navigation.
I read something about 4-6 hours battery life for GPS navigation - thats damn short. Has anyone experience about battery life in navigation mode?
Could i switch off the Smartwatch-GPS and use the Phone sensor?
Thanks for any hints.

Not sure but sounds about right for the tiny batteries that are in smartwatches. Gps uses a ton of battery on phones it only has to talk to 3 satellites that are in space lol. Also I'd post this thread in the LG watch R section ( here's a quick link to there section for q&a http://forum.xda-developers.com/g-watch-r/help ) also I'd go for urbane newer of the 2 idk the differences. Haven't done to much extensive research but I know the urbane has stand alone wifi not sure what else good luck.

Interested in X Play but have concerns with notifications

Hello,
I now own an LG G2 and, although it has a 3000mAh battery which lasts a day most of the time, I would like to get a phone that has improved battery life, especially because I always have it paired with a Moto 360. Moto X Play caught my attention due to large battery and midrange chipset which should be energy efficient.
The problem is that I'm a heavy notifications user, and I learned that most Motorola Phones do not have a notification light (at least one accessible out of the box and not by rooting, etc. - I am not interested in rooting). Most Moto X owners will tell you that it has the even better "Moto Display".
I use the notification light to look across the room and tell exactly what type of notification it is and whether it needs to be attended or I should not bother. I have set different pulse patterns and different colors so I can easily see what kind of notification it is.
Can this be achieved using the Moto Display feature of the Moto X Play ? I mean, does it stay always-on so I can look at the phone and tell if I have a notification or not, even if I am a few meters away ? Or does the display turn off after a short while, so I don't know if I have any notifications or not ?
Thanks !
The display turns off after a few seconds. Otherwise your battery would be draining constantly as the display would always be using power.
That said, if you're using a Moto 360, wouldn't you get your notifications there?
Exactly. How is all that even relevant if you use Moto 360?
Moto Display lasts for exactly one full second. If you're not already looking at the phone when the notification comes in, you won't see it. And since it's black and white and all notifications use a similar round icon, you won't be able to tell which type of notification it was from a distance.
If you are used to using an array of LED notifications to tell what's going on from a distance, Motorola phones are not for you.

Well, I don't want to have a phone that depends on my watch to deliver notifications. I don't wear a watch all the time and the battery drains in 10 hours or so. It just doesn't feel right to need a watch for my phone

Then without rooting this phone isn't right for you. I'd say learn to adapt and if notifications are a big deal to you then have your 360 on all the time. Or, take the money you'd save by getting a Moto X Play and buy a new smartwatch that has better battery life.
How come your moto 360 only lasts 10 hours? Mine is paired with Nexus 5 atm, and I take it off the charger around 7am and around 8pm I still have around 30% of battery (ambient screen is on)
On topic: is waving above the phone working for showing the notifications?

This phone doesn't have IR sensors, so no. The X Style has them.

Horrible battey life with LG G Flex 2 and Gear Live

I got my gear live and the battery on my LG G Flex 2 has been horrible! Kernel (on the phone) has been using 50% of the battery since I got the watch. I've disabled Google Fit but don't know what else to do. Can someone offer suggestions?

Can a mod please change the title to say "battery" instead of "battey"? I didn't see that until after I posted it.

Anyone switched directly from the G3 to the V20?

I have the G3 and the battery life is not bad. I'm debating between the pixel and the V20. I'm curious how the G3 battery life compares directly with the V20. I know everyone is interested in sharing their battery story and if you have another phone you want to talk about I'll be happy to start another thread. It doesn't help cover my question if people are switching from the G4 or G5 or note or a vibrator or an iPhone... I have a G3 so that is the only frame of reference that will mean anything to me.
It's about the same. Traded in my G3 for the v20 and so far the only thing that's great is the audio on my headphones. Dropped calls and bad LTE connections along with some lag have made me consider taking it back.
OMG get the v20! Switched from the G3 and guessing double the battery life after a week of use. Much better LTE signal strength with fewer dead spots. Killer audio, camera, and love the always on screen.
Looked at a pixel but for the extra cost of about $250 on VZ plus getting the removable battery and SD card I was down for the v20.
This phone is killing the G3. Battery life is waaay better. And I had Greenify and Amplify on my G3. It was rooted and booted but this V20 is 2 steps up without root. Probably get a day and a half once root comes out. Jk. Lol.
THanks for the response - the reason I ask is - I've turned off a ton of apps I don't use and get very good battery life on my G3. I have BT on 24x7.
It has been 24 hours since my last charge - I have 62% battery life remaining. Talk time 1.5 hours - normally I use my phone about 4.5 hours a day - I use it as my office line for tech support.
Anyone here use their phone as a phone a lot?

Basically my phone on standby I have black and white on cause I used it last night and its better on the eyes I just haven't turned it off lol
I too switched from my very loyal/dependable G3 to the V20. I've had the V20 since Oct 29th and I can say without reservation that it blows my old G3 away. I was running Resurrection Remix ROM on my G3, and the V20 still smokes it....regardless of no root/locked bootloader. The only thing I miss is the CM13 theme engine/Layers...but I still think the V20's responsiveness and features make up for it.
I am on Verizon and I've noticed that the signal strength is much better on the V20 compared to what I had on the G3. So far, I am confident that I made the right choice. Also for me, battery life is much better on the V20 and that is with its little 2nd screen on the entire time.... I average a day and half to 2 with moderate to heavy usage. My old G3 would only last about a day.
I did seriously contemplate the Pixel XL, but when I finally had one in hand and compared it to the V20, it was a no brainer for me.....removable battery and expendable local storage sealed the deal.
Good luck with your decision(s)....
I only just changed to the V20 yesterday, so far so good. I will still keep my G3 , it still holds its weight when comparing to other handsets on the market. Though the 2Gb ram was starting to show it's not good enough anymore with android 6.
I just got my V20 today and i have to so far I am loving it over my G3, idk about battery life yet as I killed the battery during setup and restoring my apps.
Thanks for your replies. I look forward to your opinions on the battery.
Well I still have 2X LG G3 and 1X Samsung galaxy s4 . But because my LG V20 came defective from factory i had to return it, but for the short period i used it, i can say it is way better than the LG G3 on Every aspect without exception! (im still waiting for my new LG V20 to come (STUPID BACKORDERS!)) The LG G3 >rooted with AICP or Resurrection Remix would last about 18 hours with screen off, and 3-4:50 hours with screen on device in normal usage, not heavy such as Youtube video on 1440p. Yet with the LG V20 with screen off, i lost about 1 percent every 4 hours with screen off . and screen on i got 6+ hours of normal usage. (i have 35 user apps installed on my LG G3 and also had them on my LG V20, many of them were constantly synchronizing such as package tracker pro, zooper widget pro, among others)
My V20's battery life is just about exactly what I was getting with the G4 and the G3.

Bummer - but good to know. I'm hoping the Motorola ? or Lenovo P2 come to Verizon soon as I'll need to make a decision soon. I know it a fancy recording device is important to others but I use my phone to make phone calls 95% of my use time is phone calls. Maybe 5% of the time I'll check email or text and once in a while when travelling use GPS. So cameras and recording don't matter - call reception and battery life are king for me. They both have similar thickness to the V20 but include a 5100mah battery!

If battery life is king, then the Moto Z Play is the phone you want.

Thanks - same company but it has a 3510mah battery. I'm going to guess the new model with the 5100mah battery will last longer.

Maybe. Depends on other factors. Pretty much any review you read will say that the Moto Z Play can last days. I've seen reports of 7 to 10 hours of SOT. That's without the battery mod.

I don't know if the P2 when released will have a Verizon option so I'm still hoping to find something with good battery life worth upgrading to without wasting an upgrade. I'd also love the ZenFone 3 Max which only has a 4100mah battery.

Help with battery...

Hi i bought New S8 02.03.2018r.
So I have it 8 Days... and my battery Time is teribble look at SS sorry for my bad english... on 100% battery Samsung Tell me he can work for 10 hours rly? My old S7 had better results... I dont know what I should do
It happend to me as well when I bought it. Give it some time and it will optimize things.
Also, what's your usage like? LTE all the way, no wifi?
As a note, when I got mine it kept at ~3hours of SOT for awhile, now I get 5 minimum with my usage (I'm what you call a power user).

So how Long it take... because it's terrible I must take charger with me...
I didn't really pay attention. It took ~ a week after I finished with all the setup and updates and everything. I.e. once I was back to my normal self/usage.
Like everything in life it needs some time to settle.
I had this with every smartphone I had.
Cheers!
Like I said I have this 8 Days... and it's The same 3,45 h SOT and 9H on battery when I use it
I think it all varies, and there are a lot of factors to take into consideration.
For me it took that long to settle because I have a lot of apps that I need (around 30) mostly work related, that require some time to build caches and everything.
Anyway, here's my usage for ~5hours of SOT:
-WiFi most of the day
-brightness at 40%
-data on regardless of WiFi (in case I have to run outside or something)
-around 20apps with push notifications on
-bluetooth always on and connected to my gear s2
-location always on
-calls ~2hours a day
-texting a lot (WhatsApp and regular text)
I charge it in the mornings and it gets me all the way to next morning with ~ 15/20% left.
That said, battery consumption cannot be determined solely by screen on time, there are a lot of other things that might drain your battery, for example LTE(mobile data) always on.
I'm on mobile data at most a couple of hours a day(WiFi at work and at home) so that helps a lot with battery life.
I also don't keep more than 10 apps running, and I tend to close an app if I'm done with it for the day.
But it all depends on usage.
If I play games(which I rarely do) the screen on time would decrease considerably, as games use the gpu and processor a lot.
Also, I keep my screen's brightness at around 30/40% (mostly because I hate it when my eyes hurt from too much brightness ).
Get use to it - battery in S8 is crap. You can try to root it, debloat it, greenify it, forcedoze it. I did all of that, but, nevertheless my s8 has to be charged on everyday basis.

In every phone the battery is not good ( except sony in my experience).
I had some 4000 maH battery phones and frankly after 6 months i got to charge them every day. Especially after updates. That is unfortunate because we spent lot of money for them. Nevertheless i am happy for now with the performance and didn't debloat anything. If it gets worse i would change the battery and go on.

Yeah, sony have somewhat better battery life from my pov as well. Maybe it's because Samsung have better display and stronger guts inside, or it's "stamina mode" magic. It's a shame that Sony phones are so ugly nowadays.
