Hello,
I now own an LG G2 and, although it has a 3000mAh battery which lasts a day most of the time, I would like to get a phone that has improved battery life, especially because I always have it paired with a Moto 360. Moto X Play caught my attention due to large battery and midrange chipset which should be energy efficient.
The problem is that I'm a heavy notifications user, and I learned that most Motorola Phones do not have a notification light (at least one accessible out of the box and not by rooting, etc. - I am not interested in rooting). Most Moto X owners will tell you that it has the even better "Moto Display".
I use the notification light to look across the room and tell exactly what type of notification it is and whether it needs to be attended or I should not bother. I have set different pulse patterns and different colors so I can easily see what kind of notification it is.
Can this be achieved using the Moto Display feature of the Moto X Play ? I mean, does it stay always-on so I can look at the phone and tell if I have a notification or not, even if I am a few meters away ? Or does the display turn off after a short while, so I don't know if I have any notifications or not ?
Thanks !
The display turns off after a few seconds. Otherwise your battery would be draining constantly as the display would always be using power.
That said, if you're using a Moto 360, wouldn't you get your notifications there?
Exactly. How is all that even relevant if you use Moto 360?
Moto Display lasts for exactly one full second. If you're not already looking at the phone when the notification comes in, you won't see it. And since it's black and white and all notifications use a similar round icon, you won't be able to tell which type of notification it was from a distance.
If you are used to using an array of LED notifications to tell what's going on from a distance, Motorola phones are not for you.

Well, I don't want to have a phone that depends on my watch to deliver notifications. I don't wear a watch all the time and the battery drains in 10 hours or so. It just doesn't feel right to need a watch for my phone

Then without rooting this phone isn't right for you. I'd say learn to adapt and if notifications are a big deal to you then have your 360 on all the time. Or, take the money you'd save by getting a Moto X Play and buy a new smartwatch that has better battery life.
How come your moto 360 only lasts 10 hours? Mine is paired with Nexus 5 atm, and I take it off the charger around 7am and around 8pm I still have around 30% of battery (ambient screen is on)
On topic: is waving above the phone working for showing the notifications?

This phone doesn't have IR sensors, so no. The X Style has them.

I only had mine a week or so before the upgrade, but I would say it's definitely taken a hit. Now, screen is not always the biggest power consumer like it used to be. Android OS and Android System are taking a much bigger portion of the power than they used to. I always reboot the phone if something other than screen is monopolizing the battery.
Also, I heard there's a Qualcomm-specific bug related to powering the cameras, and that it's been a particular issue with the latest Skype builds.
I worry that they'll fix these issues quickly in the Android project but it'll take months for me to see the fix from Verizon, by which point my battery will have been subjected a lot of unnecessary heat and wear.
Tonnes of android os talk in this thread. Or try Googling it.
Basically, the more services you have on and apps syncing, the higher it gets. For experimentation .....disable sync, location, Google now and Amy other service you can find, and usually android os goes way down. Decide what's important to you and enable things again....but do like one change a day. And when your android os skyrockets again....you'll know the last thing you enabled is the main culprit.
Anyway.....a pile of battery tips in here, and android os talk. Take some time and read through some. Maybe start at last page and go back as far as you can.

Yes that battery life thread is very good. No change noticed here after the upgrade from 4.4

Thanks, but I didn't really have to add anything except 4.4.2. The increased battery draw was pretty obvious after I applied the OTA. Since the upgrade, this phone doesn't have anywhere near the life that it once had. And even after the bugs that are draining it are addressed how long will it take to get the fix through Verizon?

Trust me, you can fix it now....if you try. Just gotta troubleshoot.
Many have no such bugs....or they've disabled whatever has wrecked their battery.
Just gotta put in some time and your issues can be fixed.

I seem to be one of the few that's matching my Moto x's battery life on my N5.
Not sure why some have such bad battery life on either phone sometimes, I can only assume its app related and very hard to pin down.

I have noticed no appreciable change in battery life on any of the builds that the phone has had since I got it in December. Some days it is excellent, the next day, the wind blows the other direction (literally and figuratively) and the battery life is terrible with no change in usage or where my phone spends most of its time.
I had the Android OS bug after the OTA. I reflashed the stock firmware in fastboot and now it's gone back down to a more manageable level.

I actually had slightly better battery life on my Nexus5. I still haven't passed 7+ hours screen time on the MotoX. I did it multiple times with the Nexus5. Although I think the Nexus5 has some tech to save battery while reading or screen is still. It still wasn't enough to make me choose it over the awesomeness that is the MotoX. Although I do miss that raw power every so often.
I too have had the random drain issue. It's definitely app related and since I reset and have stopped installing outdated apps I've been fine.

You know, I thought it was just me, but the battery life definitely why down after 4.4.2! Yes they added a couple of features, but not that many for the drop in battery life experienced

My battery life is better on 4.4.2
The issues are with apps that have not been updated since kit kat. I've since removed such apps and have been enjoying much better battery life.

Installed ds battery saver. And let discharge overnight. Gsam reported a 2%/hr discharge. I had some apps not be shutoff
Install a xposed module appopsx or find a app on the play store if you don't have xposed. 4.4.2 requires root.
It's the built in permissions management. You can disable location for what app for example. It shows you what app is using that permission and how long ago it used it.

I unlocked and finally upgraded to 4.4.2 on Tuesday the 18th. I had a four day weekend and was on my phone A LOT (because I wasn't at work), so I wouldn't consider it normal usage to compare with. I'm waiting patiently for my averages to level off now that I'm back at work and on normal patterns again.
Before I wiped I took a screenshot of my averages according to GSAM, and it was showing 15h7m (7h42m active) average battery life, with 5h3m (7h12m max) screen on time.
I am currently a little below that, 12h20m (7h33m active) average battery life, with 5h28m (5h17m max) SoT. I was on my phone basically all day Friday-Sunday and had it on and off the charger. I haven't really had a full cycle of waking up, using the phone all day, and going to bed yet.
The apps I am running now are almost all identical. I actually removed 2-3 of them after finding that Gravity Box could emulate the features of standalone apps that I was using.
I am not using Greenify (I didn't see any substantial gain from it), but I do have the Snapdragon Battery Guru.
Overall, I don't think it's worse.
This was my drain while I slept last night. That's even better than I thought it was. 4.4.2 BTW. I'm pretty sure I don't have any apps installed that haven't been updated since Kit Kat came out.
Having updated applications makes a huge difference.

Some have got down to 0.5 per hour drain on standby, but I never could. Our x is about 1 also. Its strange, cause its set up about the same as my n5 and it can get to 0.4 usually, not in airplane mode either.

Still.....better battery at the end of the day than my n5....with my usage.

I have always wondered if touchless and active notifications were the ones to be blamed for the average 1%/h drain on standby but never did a test to try it out, until today
I charged my phone to 100%, turned off touchless controls and active notifications and let it rest through the night, when I woke up 5h and a half later (yes, I usually don't get much time of sleep), I was still on 100%, just I did when I had my N4
I guess these stuff take so much battery because they have to keep the phone "awake" all the time to recognize your voice and to know if your phone is upside down or in your pocket or whatever and as much as motorola made them separate CPUs to handle it with less battery consuptiom, they still take that 1%/h... Probably we would get a higher %/h if it wasn't for the 8 chip processor motorola came up with
Actually I even think that it has something/all to do with the high android OS usage that we get, and to be honest, I really don't mind getting 1%/h drain on standby overnight if I can wake up any time in the morning and ask to my phone to do almost anything I want or check my notifications without having to light up the whole screen, so I'm quite pleased with it

Now we just need to test it througout the day with touchless control and active notifications off
A lot of ROMs and apps now let you use the notification light as a battery light.... It'll show when it's charging, charged or getting low. I put my phone on a charger at 11pm and take it off at 7:30 or 8:00am, so that's about 9 hours every night. I also, usually, throw it on the charger at work for a few hours at the end of the day to give it a 100% charge for the trip home (or while in the car I charge it). That's not counting all the text and email notifications I get that make it blink all day.
I question the longevity, or durability of the light? Are these generally long lasting LED bulbs? Not sure it was meant to be used as a charging light?
I'd rather sacrifice a little now, as far as cool lighting effects and still have a notification light in 2 years (if I ever kept a phone that long, or when I give it to my son), rather than burn out the LED and have nothing in 2 years.
Am I over thinking this?
I'd imagine it'd be fine. Just look at pretty much any modern-day Samsung phone - they use the LED for charging indication by default. I also have my 6P set up like this since I liked that feature on my Note 4.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I've never seen one of these LEDs die.... Not saying it can't happen, but even on some nearly 4-year old Galaxy S III phones, the LEDs still work
Why would it die? I always set these on my older phones and they work like new, not even the brightness dims.
LEDs are built to last, AMOLED isn't

I'm coming from a verizon Droid Turbo, and this phone struggles comparatively. First off, it's nearly impossible to type when my left palm is on the side of the screen edge. It constantly hits the symbol or caps lock button, creating errors. That's just bad design.
But aside from that, I bought this phone because I wanted even better battery life. I think my first day gave me something like 3 hrs of sot, and android system was the number one battery drain.
I ran a test last night. Didn't touch my phone for six hours, and I noticed it was held awake for 45 mins. And it didn't fully doze. I'm attaching the screen shots. What would cause this?

Battery life on Turbo is better. Ease of functional typing easier on Droid. I'm sure the specs on this are better, but like most people, I do basic Web, email, apps. I don't play games. I did that fine on my Turbo, without the hassle of sensitivity screen edge that made it impossible to type an email or text out. And the battery drain on this is terrible. 3.5 SCREEN On for Verizon users?

Coming from the turbo I'm having a hard time adjusting to the curved screen and phantom touches too. I also miss the chop for flashlight feature. However, waterproof, better camera, SD slot, and Samsung pay win me over.
My search is over. I have been trying to find a phone that lasts when playing pokemon go without having to carry a giant battery back or recharge for an hour and a half. At first I thought it was the LG G5 - I could swap out batteries with ease but even so it was chewing through the batteries and it became a hassle. Tried the S7 edge - great battery life but to extend it required a bulky case. Moto Z - close. Oh so close. With two kate spade wireless battery packs I was good for a full day of poke hunting...but then, then I got the Moto Z play. OMG. It lasts a full day with no other boosts, no recharging, no external battery pack. Sure it is not the highest end specs but hell I never notice. With a full charge and my trusty Kate Spade battery pack?? I am good for two days of HEAVY use. (Pokemon Go uses gps, graphics, wifi if it can, location, everything on the phone..it can be very taxing.). In addition to all that, it lasts as a regular smart phone...all day, everyday. I love it. Takes nice photos, android pay works with the fingerprint scanner (cough axon 7...cough)..omg I LOVE THIS PHONE.

I'm currently looking to replace my Nexus 6P. It only lasts an hour of PoGo and only a few hours with the screen off and my PoGo plus connected. My options for upgrading are the S8, S8+, G6 and the Moto Z. I would go for a Z Play or Z2 Play if they were an option.
I looked at the S8 and G6, but I didn't really like either of them. I have yet to see a Moto Z in person. The Z Play doesn't seem to be available in Canada.
After the battery issues with my 6P (it dies quickly and shuts off at 30 to 40%) I'm weary of the Pixel. The Pixel 2 won't be out for months. I love stock Android though. I'm not a fan of what Samsung has done with the O/S.
So what's your question? Or you were just sharing your thoughts
Sent from my XT1635-02 using Tapatalk
Hmm, good point.
I guess, in light of the fact that I don't seem to have access to the Moto Z Play, how well does the Moto Z run Pokemon Go? I can get it for $20 as an upgrade and I don't mind spending another $80 or so on a battery mod.
The alternatives are the LG G6 or Samsung S8, but I wasn't impressed by either. I just took my Nexus 6P for a 30 min walk and it went from 100% to 60% while playing PoGo. It dies at 30% so it would have only lasted another 20 minutes or so. Having the ability to add a battery mod is "almost" like having a replaceable battery.
Somebody still playing Pokemon Go?!
Why you're not asking such question in Mot Z sub forum? If exists at all.
I had (still have but display got damn green lines) Moto X Force and Z Play has way better battery life. According reviews, Z is more powerful but not even close battery life as Play.
Alternatively, you can just cross the border and buy Play in US. It is available in Best Buy and Fry's (where I bought mine).

Sooo, I just got the Fossil Q Explorist HR. And so far, I LOVE it. It looks so good. It's better looking than my Gear S3, way lighter, and a lot thinner too.
BUT, so far, battery life isn't looking good. I got it today, so I definitely need a couple days to be sure, but I've had it off of the charger for less than 3 hours and it's at 64%. I did all of the setup while it was charging. All I've done off the charger is update some apps, change the complications, and setup Fit.
What I've done to hopefully help with battery life (again, while charging), is turn off everything except Bluetooth and location, I've disabled any apps I don't feel I need or hopefully won't cause problems disabling, I've turned off permissions for a couple as well. I have always-on on, auto brightness, Fit with heart rate on, and that's pretty much it. I really need to get a full day out of a smartwatch, INCLUDING using it for up to an hour workout with Fit. The Gear S3 would do that as well as last about 24+ hours.
Am I missing something? Should I NOT disable apps or turn off any permissions? Is there a better way to set this up to get some decent battery life out of it? I really really want to get rid of my Gear S3, and I'm hoping this one will help me do that. Let me know what you have done to improve your batter, and how many hours your watch lasts.
Please and thanks!
Man, Fit workout really takes some battery! I used strength training, which detects workouts, has a built-in timer, etc. It used 24% in one hour... I'm going to use the weight lifting one tomorrow to see if it's any better, it doesn't do any of that, just heart rate and calories burned. Before my workout, 4 hours in I was down to 76%. 6% per hour. Not horrible, but could be a LOT better.
Seriously, anyone have any tips to help with the battery life? Disabling any particular apps, permissions, anything? Should I NOT disable anything? I really want to keep this watch, but as it stands, without using it to workout, I *might* get through the day. I refuse to have to charge this thing at some point in the day just to make it until I take it off.
I use mine for notifications, music control, maps, alarms and today even translating. I went to work at 5:30AM and came back at 6-7PM and had 53% left. I also called an Uber and tried Shazam and some other stuff with it. I use fitness only for my daily walking.

What watch do you have? And how did you set it up? That would be great. Mine's on the charger now. It was at 13% just a few minutes ago. Came off the charger at about 7:15am.
I have the Q Explorist HR (Silver with leather). I have display always on, turned on. I was Wi-Fi usually turned off but I had it turned on for some time too (I wish they would add Wi-Fi into the quick settings). Brightness was set on automatic. Gestures was all turned off, touch to wake was on. Location (GPS) was on. NFC was turned off (I never use it).
Also very important is the watch face you use. The more colors you have, the more information witch updates often you have on it, the faster it drains battery. So I use the simple black watch face, with battery, weather, date and alarm widget.
The 2nd battery killer is the connection (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS). Try to stay with 1.
Gesture controls often activate when you even don't need it because you run or shake hands. So I turned them off. Only touch to wake I leave turned on. The watch wakes up on notifications anyway and time is shown as well. If I need weather, I touch the screen.
I have the "OK google" detection turned off. Never using it.
I hope this helps you squeeze some more juice out of the watch, I was very surprised yesterday how long the Battery survived. But as mentioned, I use it for basic stuff.
Take care and let me know if it helped.

Yeah, you can disable quite a few actually. And turn certain permissions off on some. The problem is, some apps talk to others, and you can actually cause more battery use if one is disabled, or something turned off. I'm so new to wear os, I have no idea if I'm causing that or not. I'm going to see what today brings, but otherwise I'm going to reset the watch tonight and leave apps alone.
Thanks again. I'll report back for sure.
I will look into that, thanks. I am using my watch today since 5AM and now it's 3PM here. I have 69% left.

I haven't tried. Is there any benefit to it?
So, I turned off wrist wake up, and that was the trick! I took my watch off at around 9pm last night (off the charger at 7am), and even after an hour workout and run, I still had close to 40% left. And I actually don't mind just seeing the always on face most of the time. It's a little less annoying the constant waking up and such. Thanks, that really helped. Def keeping the watch now

Seriously! I would have never guessed that it waking up when tilted used that much battery. It's seriously at least twice as much battery life now.
I know right, I am testing it atm which Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC and heart rate stuff on all time and even then the battery life is more then 1 Day.
This one function is a major energy killer. Hopefully the Wear OS 3 update fixes this.

I know right, I am testing it atm which Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC and heart rate stuff on all time and even then the battery life is more then 1 Day.
This one function is a major energy killer. Hopefully the Wear OS 3 update fixes this.

I've had GPS and heart tracker on this whole time. Those are essential to me. The only thing I dislike about not having the tilt to wake on is, the always-on does not really work with adaptive brightness it seems. If it's darker when the screen is fully on, it stays that way even with I go outside for example. It also takes a few touches sometimes to wake up. Are you having either of these problems?
Anyway, agreed on the new Wear OS. I really hope it fixes some battery issues.
Yes, I experience the same issues. The Auto Brightness works fine for me but the extra taps to wake up are true.
They said roll-out is until end of October so let's hope it's starting soon.
